Quoting C.S. Lewis: “If we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desire not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, we are like ignorant children who want to continue making mud pies in a slum because we cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a vacation at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” People are content being dry and thirsty whereas God desires you see His power and glory, the subject of Ps. 63-64.
Because God provides ultimate reward, you should seek Him early (Ps. 62:12-63:1). The contrast between one’s dry and thirsty soul and seeing God’s power and glory should lead to great anticipation and desire to spend time with Him. Knowing that God’s lovingkindness is better than life leads to praise of His beautiful name (Ps. 63:1-5).
People are either addicted to this world or God. It may be alcohol, drugs, pornography, etc. or socially acceptable things like success, money and prestige. Being addicted to God means you constantly meditate on Him and remember His help throughout the day and night. Nothing else matters but Him (Ps. 63:6-8).
God humbles and defeats your enemies by stopping lies against you. He exalts and delivers His worshipers so they glory in Him (Ps. 63:9-11).
However, the battle isn’t over. Any ground gained in your relationship with God will be contested. Fear, dread and terror will come in like a flood. People plot behind your back to hurt you. They slander, lie, and devise elaborate plots secretly to make you look bad. Since humans have evil hearts, don’t be surprised about injustice (Ps. 64:1-6).
Take heart! God shoots your enemies with an arrow as you put on His armor through prayer and wield the sword of the Spirit (God’s word) (Eph. 6:10-18). Gladness and glory come from God. Take refuge in Him (Ps. 64:7-10).
