In our last three blogs from the Psalms, we learn about a God who delivers us in every circumstance as we pray and participate in His suffering (Ps. 22); a shepherd who offers provision, protection, purpose and presence as we dwell with Him (Ps. 23); an owner who takes responsibility for our lives as we seek this strong and mighty God who is the King of glory (Ps. 24).
With these kind of credentials, it’s no wonder the Psalmist desired to place his full trust upon God who delivered him from shame or public disgrace caused by his enemies (Ps. 25:1-3). Only an intimate, dependent relationship with God teaches us the pathway to life as He leads us into truth and freedom because of His compassion for us (Ps. 25:4-6).
How does one nurture an intimate relationship with God?
It begins with laying a foundation in His Word for those who are humble to receive it (Ps. 25:8-9). It’s important to learn God’s Word systematically, verse-by-verse, to get the whole counsel of God from Genesis to Revelation. Not only will your life be aimed in the right direction, but you will reap love, truth and fruitfulness personally and in your ministry (Ps. 25:10-13).
In Ephesus, Apostle Paul declared the whole will of God by admonishing or literally, “putting it into their mind” for a period of three years so people could grow in Christ. He did not withhold any of God’s Word (Acts 20:27,31-32).
What does an intimate relationship with God look like?
God is also a person. The word, secret or friendship, in Psalm 25:14, means to speak with God face-to-face as a friend, similar to what Moses experienced (Ex. 33:11). Our study of God’s word forms the basis for our friendship with Him.
How is a friendship with God developed?
By focusing on the Lord continually in every circumstance of life (Ps. 25:15). We speak to God when we feel lonely or forsaken (Ps. 25:16). We speak to God when we in trouble or distressed (Ps. 25:17-18). We speak and take refuge in God when we feel the force of the world, flesh and devil against us (Ps. 25:19-20). As we live out the truth we have studied from Genesis to Revelation in addition to prayer, God will set us free from any trouble (Ps. 25:21-22).
