I remember when a trusted associate went behind my back and caused great emotional hurt and depression. Statistics show that 16 percent of the US population is clinically depressed and the leading cause of disability in the nation. By 2020, the World Health Organization suggests depression will be the second major cause of disability in the world. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) says depressed people are often overwhelmed by sadness or fear and at times feel incapable of experiencing emotion. Another major symptom is loss of interest or pleasure in an activity or pastime that previously was source of considerable engagement. Other feelings include guilt, helplessness, hopelessness, anxiety, fear and decreased self-esteem. Depressed people have trouble concentrating and find themselves struggling to think clearly.

God lifts up the depressed when they cry to  Him for help (Ps. 30:1-3). You can praise and thank God because His favor and kindness last for a lifetime. Weeping may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning (Ps. 30:4-5). For  emotional health, letting out our emotions instead of stuffing them is critical.

Life doesn’t always go well (Ps. 30:6-7a). Not only when you feel depressed, but you can call upon God in frightening and terrifying situations (Ps. 30:7b-10). Because He is gracious, He comes to our aid in every circumstance of life. He turns our mourning into dancing so we can praise and thank Him forever (Ps. 30:11-12). Because God accepts us, we can express both positive and negative emotions on the pathway to healing our soul.

Remember there’s  a season for everything. A time to weep, time to laugh, time to mourn and a time to dance (Eccl. 3:4).
Might this suggest that God uses depression as a vehicle for you to draw closer to Him?

Are you “down” because of depression or fear? Call upon God right now so He can lift you up!
