Fight Spiritual Battles for Long-Term Impact (Insights in Prophets)

The short-term view afflicts business as well as the church. Businesses often focus on short-term profits at the expense of long-term health and sustainability. Church leaders begin programs hoping they will increase numbers and excitement quickly, many times at the expense of long-term spiritual growth of people, which takes years to see fruit. At the end of 1 Sam., the people of Jabesh Gilead buried Saul and his sons under a tamarisk tree at Jabesh. Tamarisk trees are slow-growing and require much care, representing a long-term, other-centered perspective.

David learned the who, what, when, where and how in fighting spiritual battles resulting in good fruit that remains from obeying God. In contrast, forsaking God leads to bad fruit, as shown in Saul's life.

The Philistines proceeded by 100s & 1000s while David and his men marched in the rear with Achish. He found no fault with David who had been with him for more than a year. The Philistine commanders were angry and afraid that if David was in battle with them, he might become an adversary. They remembered what the people sang, "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands" (1 Sam. 29:1-5). God leads you to fight the right spiritual battles in the world.

Achish told David to return in peace so he may not displease them. David arose early, he and his men, to return to the land of Philistines. The Philistines went up to Jezreel (1 Sam. 29:6-11). God protects from you from fighting other believers in the body of Christ.

Amalekites raided and burned Negev and Ziklag with fire and took the women and children captive. David and the people with him wept until there was no strength in them. All the people were bitter in soul and talked of stoning David, but he found strength in the Lord his God (1 Sam. 30:1-6). Find emotional strength in God in the midst of the spiritual battle.

David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I pursue this band? Shall I overtake them?” He said, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them, and you shall surely rescue all.” David and the 600 men came to Besor Ravine with 200 too exhausted to cross the ravine. David and 400 men continued the pursuit (1 Sam. 30:7-10). Ask direction from God whether to wait or take action in the spiritual battle.

They found an Egyptian, a servant of Amalekite, who was part of the raid on Ziglag. David asked if he would bring them to the raiding party (1 Sam. 30:11-15). God provides right connections and information in fighting spiritual battles.

While the band ate and drank, David slaughtered them from twilight until evening of the next day. Not a man escaped  except 400 young men. David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken and rescued his two wives (1 Sam. 30:16-20). God allows you to be victorious in the spiritual battle.

David came to the 200 men who were too exhausted to fight. Evil men among David's followers didn't want to share the plunder. David said the Lord gave the plunder, protected them and defeated the forces against them. He said all would share equally (1 Sam. 30:21-25). God wants the whole body of Christ share equally in victory and celebration.

David sent some of the plunder as a gift to the elders of Judah who were his friends (Bethel, Ramoth, Aroer, Siphmoth, Eshtemoa, Racal, Jerahmeelites, Kenites, Hormah, Bor-ashan, Athach and Hebron) and to all places where David himself and all his men had roamed (1 Sam. 30:26-31). Victory in your spiritual battles benefits the whole city.

The Philistines fought against Israel and they fell slain, including Jonathan.  Saul took his own sword and fell on it. His three sons, his armor bearer and all his men died together that same today. Men of Israel abandoned the cities and fled. Then the Philistines came and lived in them (1 Sam. 31:1-7).  Disobedience and forsaking God lead to death and abandonment to sin.

The Philistines cut off Saul's head, stripped off his armor and sent messengers throughout their land to proclaim new in the temple of their idols and among their people. They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths and fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan. The people of Jabesh Gilead took down the bodies of Saul and his sons and went to Jabesh where they burned them, buried their bones and fasted seven days (1 Sam. 31:8-13). Outcome of forsaking God leads to worldliness and idolatry, but obedience to God leads to other-centeredness and concern for the welfare of the next generation.

Study the applications on how to fight spiritual battles in the underlined sentences as illustrated in David's life. Which one(s) most speak to you? Ask God to apply them in your life.

Outcomes and Spiritual Weapons (Insights in Prophets)

Picture
How do we know that the enemy of our souls is winning the battle against us? If so, what can we do to fight our spiritual enemies: world, flesh and devil. The conflicts you have in your family is a spiritual battle. The conflict you have with others is a spiritual battle. David found himself in a battle against Saul, which was ultimately a spiritual battle.Let's examine the weapons to fight the spiritual battle and the outcomes when these weapons aren't used because of disobedience.

Defensive Weapons for Protection from Spiritual Enemies
David said to himself that Saul would despair of searching for him if he escaped in the land of the Philistines. David and 600 men lived with Achish, king of Gath. When Saul learned that David fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him (1 Sam. 27:1-4). Removing yourself from evil and activate teamwork to protect you from spiritual enemies.

Achish gave Ziklag to David so he could live in the country. As a servant, he asked not to live in the royal city with Ackish. David lived 16 months in Ziklag, the country of the Philistines  (1 Sam. 27:5-7). Humility protects you from spiritual enemies.

Offensive Weapons to Defeat Spiritual Enemies
David and his men killed everyone among the Geshurites, Girzites and Amalekites, the original inhabitants, and took away their cattle.  After returning to Achish, David said he raided Negev of Judah, Jerahmeelites and Kenites. He killed everyone saying, “Lest they should tell about us, saying, ‘So has David done and so has been his practice all the time he has lived in country of Philistines.’” So Achish believed David, saying that he made himself odious among Israel to become Achish's servant forever (1 Sam. 27:8-12). Diligent spiritual warfare in prayer and serving others defeat spiritual enemies.

Outcomes When Spiritual Weapons Aren't Activated Because of Disobedience
Philistines gathered to fight against Israel. Achish expected David and his men to fight with him and for David to become Achish's bodyguard for life. Samuel was dead and Saul removed the mediums and spiritists. Saul was afraid and his heart trembled greatly when he saw the Philistines. When Saul inquired of the Lord, He did not answer him, either by dreams, Urim or by prophets. Saul asked for a medium at En-dor (1 Sam. 28:1-7). God ceases to answer prayer when you disobey Him.

The woman medium asked Saul why he was laying a snare to bring about her death. He asked her to bring up Samuel. She asked why Saul deceived her by not revealing his identity. When Saul saw Samuel, he bowed to the ground and did homage (1 Sam. 28:8-14). Worship man instead of God when you disobey Him.

Saul told Samuel he was greatly distressed that Philistines were waging war and that God departed from him and wouldn't answer him. As a result, Saul called Samuel to make known what he should do. Samuel said that the Lord has become His adversary after departing from him land torn the torn kingdom out of his hand and given it to David. Saul did not obey the Lord by executing His fierce wrath on Amalek. Samuel said He and his sons would die and the Lord would give over the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines (1 Sam. 28:15-19).
Lose ministry effectiveness when you disobey God.

Saul became very afraidand lost all strength  because of Samuel's words. The woman provided a fattened calf and unleavened bread to nourish Saul and his servants. Become emotionally afraid and without strength when you disobey God.

Do a personal assessment:

1. Are your prayers unanswered?

2. Do you ask people people for advice instead of God?
3.  Is your ministry ineffective or stagnate?
4. Are you afraid and without strength?

If you answered yes on any other of the above items, consider doing one or more of the following things:
1. Remove yourself from evil
2. Engage team members in your ministry
3. Humble yourself before God
4. Pray diligently about everything
5. Serve others instead of yourself

Gaining True Accomplishment and Victory (Insights in Prophets)

Getting things done in God's kingdom is more than crossing items off your to-do list. Evil spirits fight against your best efforts. Prayer, God's word and integrity are your three primary weapons in the spiritual battle. Your eyes must be open to danger so you can take proper action. You find your purpose and gain true accomplishment and victory by pursuing God's presence.

Saul and 3,000 men of Israel went to the wilderness of Ziph to search for David. When he saw Saul coming after him, David sent spies knowing Saul was coming. He came to a place where Saul camped (1 Sam. 26:1-5). Keep your eyes open to spiritual danger.

David asked Ahimelech and Abishai to go with him to Saul at night where they found him sleeping with a spear stuck in the ground. David said to Abishai that killing Saul would cause guilt and ultimately his own death. The Lord forbade him to kill the Lord's anointed but told Abishai to take the spear and jug of water beside Saul's head. No one knew they left because the Lord made Saul and his men sleep soundly  (1 Sam. 26:6-12). Trust God to fight and defeat your spiritual enemies in His time and way.

David said Abner and his men would die since they failed to protect Saul. David showed him Saul's spear and jug of water that was at his head (1 Sam. 26:13-16). Guard yourself from evil attacks by putting on armor of God.

David asked Saul why he was being pursued since he hadn't done any evil against him. If the Lord stirred Saul against him, David should make an offering. However, Saul's fleshly motivation in hunting David like a flea would be cursed since it could prevent him from receiving the Lord's inheritance. David would serve other gods apart from the presence of the Lord (1 Sam. 26:17-20). Find your purpose by pursuing God's presence.

Because Saul realized his sin and that David saw his life as precious, he would not harm David. By not killing Saul, David said the Lord would repay each man for his righteousness and faithfulness.  David said, "May my life be highly valued in the sight of the Lord and may He deliver me from all distress.” Saul told David that he was blessed, would accomplish much and surely prevail (1 Sam. 26:21-25). Obey God to accomplish much in His kingdom.

Meditate and do the following applications:
1. Keep your eyes open for spiritual danger
2. Trust God to fight your spiritual enemies in His time and way
3. Guard yourself from evil attacks by putting on armor of God
4. Find your purpose by pursuing God's presence
5. Obey God to accomplish much in His kingdom

Becoming a Peacemaker (Insights in Prophets)

6/18/2011

Picture
When Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God" (Matt. 5:9), He blessed the work of peacemakers to help others live in just and right relationships with others and God. Jesus calling peacemakers "children of God" confirms their deepest and original identity. The hard work of making peace pleases Him and allows you to follow in Jesus’ steps. Abigail’s peacemaking work between David and her husband, Nabal, becomes an example for all of us to follow.

Samuel died and all Israel gathered together to mourn for him. David arose and went down to the wilderness of Paran (1 Sam. 25:1). Peaceful leaders leave a positive legacy.

David told ten young men to bless and ask favor from Nabal since they hadn’t insulted or stolen from his shepherds. Nabal was rich with 3,000 sheep and 1,000 goats. His wife, Abigail, was intelligent and beautiful, while Nabal was harsh and evil in his dealings (1 Sam. 25:2-8). Harsh leaders leave a negative legacy.

Nabal refused to give David's men food and scorned them asking, “Who is David? Shall I give meat to men whose origin I don’t know.” David told his men to take their swords with them leading 400 men while 200 men stayed with the baggage (1 Sam. 25:9-13). Returning evil for good builds animosity.

One of the young men told Abigail that since David’s men protected Nabal’s shepherds, she should consider responding to the evil plotted against Nabal and his household. Nabal's associate said he was a worthless man where no one could speak to him (1 Sam. 25:14-17). Those who associate with harsh leaders see them as worthless.

Abigail brought supplies for David and his men, but didn’t tell Nabal. David said that in vain he guarded Nabal’s possessions as he returned evil for good (1 Sam. 25:18-22). A peacemaker takes initiative and uses discernment in reconciling relationships.

Abigail told David to not pay attention to the “worthless” Nabal. She brought gift of provisions and asked David to “forgive the transgression of your maidservant; for the Lord will certainly make for my lord an enduring house, because my lord is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil shall not be found in you all your days.” Abigail said God would protect David’s life, appoint him as ruler over Israel and save him from taking revenge on Nabal (1 Sam. 25:23-31). A peacemaker prevents sin so people can fulfill their mission in life.

David blessed Abigail for showing discernment in preventing bloodshed. He received her provision and granted her request (1 Sam. 25:32-35). Authorities will exalt the discernment of peacemakers.

Nabal held a feast and became very drunk. When Abigail waited until morning to tell Nabal, his heart died, he became as stone and died ten days later (1 Sam. 25:36-38). God intervenes to confirm the discernment of peacemakers.

When David heard Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed be the Lord, who has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and has kept back His servant from evil. The Lord has also returned the evildoing of Nabal on his own head.” When David’s servants came to Abigail to take her as his wife, she washed the feet of “my lord’s servants” (1 Sam. 25:39-44). God avenges evildoing and exalts patience and humility leading to a positive outcome.

Ask God to make you into a peacemaker. Is there a situation where He wants you to be a peacemaker? If so, take the initiative and ask God on how He wants you to be a peacemaker.

From Insubordination to Submission (Insights in Prophets)

It's easy to take revenge when people seek to harm you. It's a test whether you will trust God or seize control. Because God rules over authorities, respond respectfully and righteously. He rewards integrity, not when you take matters in your own hands. Instead of insubordination, David practiced submission in 1 Sam. 24.

Saul sought David in the wilderness of Engedi. David saw Saul and cut off the edge of his robe secretly. David’s conscience bothered him. David said to his men, “Far be it from me because of the Lord that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is the Lord’s anointed.” He did not allow his men to rise up against Saul (1 Sam. 24:1-7).  Respect and honor authorities over you instead of harming them.

After David bowed before Saul, he explained the falseness of accusations that he sought to harm Saul. David told Saul he hadn't sin because there was no evil or rebellion in his hands. He told Saul that the Lord would judge and decide between them, plead his cause and be delivered from his hand (1 Sam. 24:8-15). God judges and  takes revenge on your enemies instead of you.

Saul admitted his wickedness and David's righteous response. Saul asked the Lord to reward David with good  as he would establish the kingdom of Israel as king. David swore that he would not cut off Saul’s descendants after he became king (1 Sam. 24:16-22). God rewards those who have integrity of heart and wait on God's timing.

From 1 Sam. 24: 11, notice that David applied 1 Sam. 15:22-23 since he had no evil or rebellion. He cleansed his heart from "insubordination (which) is as iniquity and idolatry."

Ask God to cleanse your heart from insubordination and rebellion in response to your parents, spouse, boss and political leaders. Begin to pray for them.

Ways God Protects You (Insights in Prophets)

5/23/2011

When danger chases after you, do you get angry, give up or fight it? When things don't go your way, do you run hoping the grass is greener on the other side? In  1 Sam. 23, we learn from David's experiences with Saul about specific strategies in protecting yourself from danger. Instead of defeat, become an overcomer. Although specific prayer provides a foundation, other people, your own thinking and God's sovereignty work together in helping you overcome danger and stress.

David learned Philistines were fighting Keilah and plundering threshing floors. David asked the Lord if he should go and attack the Philistines. The Lord said to attack the Philistines and deliver Keilah. David’s men said they were afraid in Judah. Then David inquired once more and the Lord answered, “Arise, go down to Keilah, for I will give the Philistines into your hand.” David and his men struck them with a great slaughter and delivered Keilah (1 Sam. 23:1-6). God gives specific strategies in answer to prayer in the midst of danger.

Abiathar the son of Ahimelech came down with the ephod in his hand. Saul summoned all the people to wage war against David in Keilah. He knew Saul was plotting evil against him and asked Abiathar the priest to the bring the ephod. David asked God if Saul would come to the city and whether Keilah would surrender him into his hand. After asking a second time, God said they would surrender him. David and his 600 men departed and he stayed in the wilderness in the strongholds as Saul sought him everyday but God did not deliver him into his hand. (1 Sam. 23:7-14). God provides wisdom in answer to specific prayer so you are protected from evil.

When David became aware that Saul was seeking his life, Jonathan encouraged him in God by saying not to be afraid as Saul wouldn't find him and he would eventually become king with Jonathan next to him. The two of them made a covenant before the Lord (1 Sam. 23:15-18). God uses accountability partners to encourage you during times of danger and stress.

The Ziphites suggested to Saul that David was hiding with them in strongholds at Horesh. Saul asked for verification of David's hiding place before he would go with them since he was aware of his cunning ways (1 Sam. 23:19-23). God uses sanctified and shrewd thinking for protection.

When Saul and his men went to find David, he stayed in the wilderness of Maon after being told of their search. Saul pursued him on one side of the mountain and David and his men stayed on the other side. A messenger came to Saul saying the Philistines made a raid on the land so he suspended his search of David. The place was called the Rock of Escape (1 Sam. 23:24-29). God sovereignly arranges circumstances for your protection.

Review the following strategies and ask how God wants you to apply them in your "dangerous" situation:
1. Ask God to show you how to respond in the situation.
2. Ask God for wisdom on how to be protected from evil.
3. Allow your accountability partner or friend to encourage you in times of danger.
4. Use sanctified and shrewd thinking to overcome danger.
5. Trust God's sovereignty to arrange circumstances for your protection.

Dealing with Compromise, Independence and Stress (Insights in Prophets)

5/16/2011

Picture
Compromise, independence and stress are modern-day issues that David also faced while being chased by Saul. What can we do to overcome these beasts that produce lies, attacks, chaos and  lack of peace? We see the importance of relationships combin addition to obeying God's word as  solutions. Study 1 Sam. 21-22 to learn how obedience, prayer and confession of sin combined with community, friends and hospitality relieve stress, overcome independence and defeat compromise.

Compromise
David deceived Ahimelech, the priest, by saying the king commissioned him about an important matter requiring secrecy. When David asked for bread, his young men received consecrated bread (1 Sam. 21:1-6). Fear causes lies, deception and compromises your faith.

Independence
Doeg the Edomite, chief of Saul’s shepherds, was detained before the Lord. David asked Abimelech for a spear or sword since he brought neither. The priest offered Goliath’s sword, which David took (1 Sam. 21:7-9). Independence in not using God’s armor through prayer and His word allows the evil one to attack you and others.

Stress
David fled from Saul and went to Aschish king of Gath. When his servants said, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?”, David took these words to heart and greatly feared Achish. He disguised his sanity and acted insanely in their hands (1 Sam. 21:10-15). Stress produces chaos, lack of peace and non-transparency.

Obedience and Community Relieve Stress

David escaped to the cave of Adullam and his family went down to him. Everyone in distress, debt and discontented gathered to David and he became captain over 400 men. David asked the king of Moab if his family could stay with him until he knew what God would do for him.  The prophet of Gad said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold; depart, and go into land of Judah.” David departed and went into the forest of Hereth (1 Sam. 22:1-5). Obedience to God's direction and community relieve stress.

Prayer and Friends Overcome Independence
After David was discovered, Saul said to servants, “Hear now, O Benjamites. Will David give to all of you fields and vineyards? Will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds? Saul had self-pity that no one disclosed Jonathan’s plans in befriending David. Saul said everyone conspired against him by not disclosing to him that his son, Jonathan, had made a covenant with David so he could ambush Saul. Doeg said he saw David with Ahimelech who inquired of the Lord for him, gave him provisions and Goliath's
sword (1 Sam. 22:6-10). Friends protect you spiritually and physically with prayer and provisions to overcome independence.

Confession and Hospitality Defeat Compromise
Saul accused Ahimelech and David of conspiring together when he gave bread, a sword and inquired of God for him. When Saul’s guards didn’t kill Ahimelech and his father’s household, then Doeg the Edomite killed the priests, men, women, children, infants and animals. Abiathar, son of Ahimelech, told David that Saul killed the priests of the Lord. David confessed that he was responsible for these deaths and promised safety for Abiathar if he stayed with him
(1 Sam. 22:11-23). Confession of sin, hospitality as a demonstration of love and community defeat compromise.

Which of compromise, independence and stress cause you the most problems? Study the solution in the above paragraphs and ask God for the victory.

Accountability Partner Keeps You in the Race (Insights in Prophets)

5/8/2011

Picture
Accountability partners not only help you walk in truth and wisdom instead of deception and fear (1 Sam. 18), but help you be successful in fulfilling your mission so the enemy doesn't take you out. Remember that "your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (1 Pet. 5:8). The last thing he wants is for you to be successful in fulfilling your God-given mission. God provided Jonathan as an accountability partner so David could stay in the race to fulfill His destiny (1 Sam. 19-20).

Saul told Jonathan to put David to death. Jonathan greatly delighted in David, told him to hide in a secret place and learned everything Saul would say about him to tell David. Jonathan spoke well of David reminding his father that he hadn’t sinned and his deeds benefitted him when he killed Goliath to bring great deliverance. Jonathan reasoned that it didn’t make sense to shed innocent blood by killing David. Since Saul vowed not to put David to death, Jonathan brought him to Saul I Sam. 19:1-7). Every person needs an accountability partner to support them in times of trial.

David defeated Philistines with great slaughter. An evil spirit from the Lord came on Saul so he took spear to pin David to the wall while he played the harp. He escaped that night. Michal let David down through window and he escaped again. She placed household idol on David’s bed and said he was sick. Saul asked why she deceived him (1 Sam. 19:8-17).  In addition to your accountability partner, allow your extended network of friends to protect you from Satan’s schemes.

David came to Samuel and told all Saul had done to him. He and Samuel stayed in Naioth. When Saul’s messengers saw company of prophets prophesying with Samuel presiding over them, Spirit of God came upon the messengers and they prophesied three times. Saul laid down naked all that day and people said. “Is Saul also among the prophets?” (1 Sam. 19:18-24). Corporate prayer among the church releases God's power for protection from your enemies.

David asked Jonathan what he did or iniquity that caused Saul to seek his life. Jonathan reassured his support that Saul would not hide anything from him. David said there is “hardly a step between me and death.” Jonathan said he would do anything and tell him know if Saul answered harshly (1 Sam. 20:1-11). Accountability partner seeks your best interests and protects you from harm.

If Saul had good feeling or decided to harm David, Jonathan would share that with him. He made a covenant so David would show lovingkindness to his family when the Lord killed all David’s enemies. Because Jonathan loved David as he loved his life, he made David vow again (1 Sam. 20:12-17). Accountability partner with sacrificial love makes  a covenant for important commitments.

When David stayed away three days, Jonathan would shoot three arrows and say a certain phrase signifying whether there was safety or for Lord to send David away. The agreement Jonathan and David made showed the Lord was between them forever (1 Sam. 20:18-23). Accountability partners' mutual trust in God provides the foundation for their relationship throughout eternity.

When David received news through the arrows that Saul was angry, he fell on his face to the ground and bowed three times. They kissed each other and wept together, but David more (1 Sam. 20:24-42). Accountability partner defends, keeps commitments and advocates spiritually through prayer and relationally before your enemies.

Which of the underlined sentences are most important to you? If you don't have one, ask God to provide an accountability partner.

Accountability Versus Isolation (Insights in Prophets)

5/2/2011

Picture
We are meant to live life together but most men don’t have transparent relationships with at least one other man. Pride and fear prevent us from going deep with one another. David and Jonathan are positive examples of two men who were accountable to each other and had fun together. This is a major reason why David lived a godly life. In contrast, Saul refused accountability with another man so he lived in isolation. Samuel tried, but pride derailed Saul and he paid the price as we observe in 1 Sam. 18.

Jonathan’s soul was knit to David’s. Because Jonathan loved him as himself, they made a covenant together. Jonathan gave his robe, armor, sword, bow and belt to David. He went wherever Saul sent him and acted wisely. He pleased everyone, including Saul’s servants (1 Sam. 18:1-5).  A strong emotional and accountable relationship with another person strengthens your walk in truth.

When David returned from killing Goliath, women said, “Saul has slain his thousands but David his ten thousands.” After Saul became very angry with evil in his eyes, he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, but to me they have ascribed thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom.” He looked at David with suspicion from that day on (1 Sam. 18:6-9). First, believing a lie causes anger and distrust of others.

On the next day, an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul and he raved in midst of his house. David played the harp and Saul hurled a spear at him and escaped from his presence twice. Saul was afraid of David, for Lord was with him but had departed from Saul. He appointed David as commander of a thousand and dreaded him when he prospered greatly and people loved him (1 Sam. 18:10-16).  Second, jealously of others’ prosperity causes an evil spirit to take control of your life.

Saul deceived David about his daughter becoming married to him. Saul wanted David to be killed by Philistines. Saul became even more afraid of David when he saw Lord was with him and Saul’s daughter loved him. Thus Saul was David’s enemy continually (1 Sam. 18:17-29).  Third, deception, ill-will and fear lead to enmity, disgrace and unreconciled relationships.

Commanders of Philistines went out to battle and David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul. So his name was highly esteemed (1 Sam. 18:30). In contrast, accountable relationships lead to wisdom, esteem and reconciled relationships.

Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety." Don't be a lone ranger.  Find a person of the same sex who accepts you the way you are, but love you too much to allow you to stay the way you are. That’s true friendship.

Find a person to apply these four practical steps to make you accountable:
 a. Vulnerability – the willingness to admit wrong
and to put yourself at risk.
 b. Teachability – a willingness to learn.
 c. Availability – a willingness to make your life
     accessible.
 d. Honesty – a commitment to truth and reality at
      all costs

Put on God's Armor to Be Skilled in Your Work (Insight in Prophets)

4/23/2011

Picture
The book of Ephesians gives a roadmap on how to fight the spiritual battle with the armor of God:
 1.  Father (Spiritual
      Blessings): Eph.  1:3-19
 2.  Jesus (Jesus’ Authority
at Right  Hand of God): Eph. 1:18-22
 3.  Church (Seated with Jesus): Eph. 2:6-10
 4.  Principalities and Powers (Grace Witness of Defeat):
       Eph. 3:10
 5.  Church Versus  Principalities and Powers (Stand Firm
Against Satan’s Schemes): Eph. 6:10-20 (Specific
       Schemes: Eph. 4:26-32)

We see these spiritual principles of warfare illustrated in  David's physical battle against the Philistine champion, Goliath, which enabled him to stand before King Saul (1 Sam. 17). Prov. 22:28-29 says a man skilled in his work will stand before kings if he doesn't move the ancient boundaries (putting on armor of God begins with the truth of God's word).

The Philistines stood on one side of the mountain and Israel on the other side, with the valley between them. A champion from the Philistine army named Goliath came out  and shouted to Israel, “Why do you come out to draw up in battle array? . . . Choose a man for yourselves . . . If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will become your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall become our servants and serve us.” Saul and all Israel feared greatly (1 Sam. 17:1-11). The evil one challenges you to make a choice: serve satan (world, flesh or devil) or God?

David was Jesse's youngest son, while his three oldest brothers followed Saul into battle. David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s flock at Bethlehem. Goliath came every morning and evening for 40 days to take his stand. Jesse had David take food and look into the welfare of his brothers who fought against the Philistines (1 Sam. 17:12-19). Choosing who to serve is a daily and unceasing process as you go through your normal routine.

David ran to the battle line to greet his brothers. When Goliath defied Israel yet again, great fear caused them to flee from him. For whoever killed Goliath, the king would provide great riches, give his daughter to him and make his father’s house free from taxes in Israel. David said, “For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should taunt the armies of the living God?” David's brothers burned in anger against him for coming down to see the battle (1 Sam. 17:20-30). You either embrace God's reward by serving Him or stop persecution from friends and family by serving the world, flesh and devil.

When David told Saul he would fight Goliath, Saul said he was but a youth while Goliath a warrior from his youth. David said Goliath would be like killing the lion and bear “since he has taunted the armies of the living God.” Because the Lord delivered him from wild animals, He would deliver him from Goliath. Instead of using Saul’s untested armor, David took a stick, five smooth stones and sling to approach Goliath (1 Sam. 17:31-40). To serve God, you must be grounded in God's truth and understand His power by putting on His armor.

By his gods, Goliath cursed David’s armor of sticks. Goliath said that he would give David’s flesh to the birds of the sky and beasts of the field. David said, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted.” David was confident the Lord would deliver Goliath and Philistine army to the birds and beasts so the earth and assemble would know there's a God in Israel and the Lord does not deliver by sword and spear “for the battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our hands.” David struck Goliath on his forehead and he fell on his face to the ground (1 Sam. 17:41-49). Both the world and the church must see that God is alive and He fights the battle, not you.

David prevailed over Goliath with a sling and stone, but there was no sword in David’s hand. He took Goliath’s sword, killed and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw their champion dead, they fled. Israel pursued the Philistines and plundered their camps. David brought Goliath’s head to Jerusalem, but put his weapons in his tent (1 Sam. 17:50-54). You must rely completely on God's weapons of prayer and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, for the outcome.

Saul asked David, “Whose son are you, young man?” David said, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite” (1 Sam. 17:55-58). A person skilled in his work and ministry by relying on God's power stands before kings.

Are you emphasizing in your life the most important spiritual boundary or landmark, which is truth or Scripture, the first one mentioned in putting on the armor of God (Eph. 6:14, Prov. 22:28)? If you are, then you can be skilled in your work and stand before kings like David (Prov. 22:29).

My goal is to ignite the hearts of people by explaining God's word in the Law, Prophets, Psalms and New Testament consecutively, much like the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:32,44). I have been a missionary in Lincoln, NE, for 13 years with Christ For the City Int. and Sync with God.

Sync with God is a highly versatile web app that hosts on-demand, virtual small groups. Sync is designed to connect young seekers in the faith and scripturally-trained mentors, even globally. It offers a safe, engaging interface for Millennials/Gen. Z and is readily adaptable to technical advances well into the future.
