How to Regain Purpose and Hope

Our mission agency, Christ For the City Int’l, spent a day serving during our bi-annual board meetings. During lunch, I sat down next to a man eating alone. I asked, “How’s your day going?”

After an awkward pause, he opened up. I sensed a melancholy spirit. He said his wife of 34 years died in his arms four years ago. She was the love of his life with a “beautiful spirit inside and out.”

This man turned to alcohol and his life spiraled out of control. He remarried, but temporarily lost touch with his second wife. I prayed out loud. Tears seeped out of his eyes. This man once had been a deacon in an evangelical church, but now seemed to have lost all hope.

How do we lose purpose and hope? How do we regain it?

We find a clue in Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness, mentioned three times (Matthew 4:1-11; Mark 1:12-13; Luke 4:1-12). He was led by the Spirit and tempted by the devil. The first was self-gratification (lust of the flesh). If you’re the Son of God, meet the physical need by turning stones into bread. Jesus, like us, need God’s word to withstand the temptation (Matthew 4:1-4).

The second temptation was self-promotion (lust of the eyes). The devil had Jesus stand on the highest point of the temple and throw Himself down. The devil twisted Scripture. Jesus said not to put God to the test (Matthew 4:5-7).

The third temptation was self-exaltation (boastful pride of life). The devil showed all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor so Jesus would worship him. Jesus said to worship and serve God only (Matthew 4:8-11).

Before the temptations, Jesus had a mountain top experience--heaven was opened, saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and heard an affirming voice of unconditional love from heaven (Matthew 3:16-17). When things go well and you feel blessed, beware the devil will blast you with chaos, confusion, and criticism.

After the temptations, Jesus preached, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” Jesus told Peter. Andrew, James, and John to follow Him to become fishers of men. (Matthew 4:17-22). The devil doesn’t want you to share the gospel or disciple others.

On the encouraging side, angels, ministering spirits to serve believers, helped Jesus and will attend to you (Mark 1:12-13; Hebrews 1:14).

If we resist temptation, share our faith and begin discipling others, evil forces will come against us. We must walk in Christ’s authority and drive out evil spirits (Mark 1:21-28).

Because we’re in a spiritual battle, we must fight with the spiritual weapons of prayer and God’s word.
  • It’s important we follow the example of Jesus and pray, preferably early in the morning (Mark 1:35).
The devil is crafty and leaves us until an opportune time. He knows our weaknesses. In Jesus’ case, everyone praised Him as the word got around (Luke 4:13-15). Seeking the praise of others may prevent us from sharing the gospel and discipling others.

Don’t love the world, which include the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and boastful pride of life. Those who do God’s will live forever (1 John 2:15-17).

The greatest purpose and hope we have in life are to follow Jesus in catching men for Him.

Wisdom Blesses and Foolishness Ruins (Insights in Psalms)

Picture
Noah Webster wrote, 'The virtues of men are of more consequence to society than their abilities, and for this reason, the heart should be cultivated with more assiduity than the head." Proverbs 10 shows how wisdom and character bless a person's life while foolishness ruins them.

Righteousness and Wisdom
Righteousness and wisdom bring joy to your father, deliver from death, make rich, gives the ability to plan ahead, a blessed memory, receive commands and walk with integrity and security. In contrast, a fool brings grief to his mother, does not profit, has unsatisfied cravings, offers negligence and poverty, is shameful and lazy, conceals violence, is a forgotten name, is thrown down, has perverted ways and causes trouble (Prov. 10:1-10). The righteous prospers in all areas of life because he or she walks in integrity.

Tongue
A righteous tongue is like a fountain of life that covers all transgression, provides discernment and wisdom and stores up knowledge. In contrast, a wicked tongue conceals violence, stirs up strife, lacks understanding and spreads ruin (Prov. 10:11-14).  A righteous tongue provides life through forgiveness, discernment and knowledge.

Finances
The rich trusts in his wealth and the poor are ruined through poverty. The wages of the righteous is life. The income of the wicked is punishment. The Lord 's blessing makes rich and adds no sorrow to it (Prov. 10:15-16,22). The righteous experience the Lord's blessings of life, riches and peace.

Wise Versus Fool

Characteristics of Wise:
1. Restrain their lips
2. Feed many like choice silver
3. Heeds instruction
4. Has understanding
5. Desires are granted
6. Eternal foundation
7. Fear of the Lord
8. Prolonged life
9. Hope
10. Gladness
11. Way of Lord is stronghold
12. Unshaken
13. Mouth flows with wisdom
14. Mouth brings acceptable things

The wise experience abundant life in ministering to others and trusting God.

Characteristics of Fool:
1. Sins with many words
2. Unworthy heart
3. Dies for lack of understanding

4. Goes astray by forsaking reproof
5. Conceals hatred with lying lips
6. Spreads slander
7. Doing wickedness
8. Fears come upon him
9. Lazy like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes
10. Shortened life

11. Expectation perishes
12. Way of Lord is ruin
13. Not dwell in land
14. Perverted tongue cut out (Prov. 10:17-32)
The fool experiences lack because their words hurt others and come to ruin.

Which characteristics of the wise do you want to experience?
Which characteristics of the fool do you want to avoid?
Ask God for wisdom and to protect you from foolishness.

Where Life is Found (Insights in Psalms)

3/6/2012

People search many places for life. It's found in one place only, in Christ. Watchman Nee's quote captures the truth well:  "Outside of Christ, I am only a sinner, but in Christ, I am saved. Outside of Christ, I am empty; in Christ, I am full. Outside of Christ, I am weak; in Christ, I am strong. Outside of Christ, I cannot; in Christ, I am more than able. Outside of Christ, I have been defeated; in Christ, I am already victorious. How meaningful are the words, "in Christ."

Relationship with God
You experience longer life, peace, favor and understanding when truth and kindness rule your heart so you keep His commandments. When you trust in the Lord and don't rely on your understanding, you experience the following benefits:

 a.  Make your paths straight
 b.  Healing and refreshment
 c.  Material plenty when you give
 d.  Loving discipline (Prov. 3:1-12). Trusting in God and keeping His commandments along with kindness lead to fullness in all areas of life.

Wisdom
Nothing compares to the profit of wisdom, not even silver, gold or precious jewels. Here are the benefits of wisdom:
a.  Long life
b.  Riches and honor
c.  Pleasant ways and peace
d.  Tree of life and happiness
e.  Life to your soul
f.   Favor and grace
g.  Walk securely and not stumble
h.  Not fear
i.   Good sleep
j.  Confidence in Lord
k. Not stumble (Prov. 3:13-26). Wisdom has maximum profit since it's the tree of life.

Wisdom is the bridge between a healthy relationship with God and profitable relationship with others.

Relationship with Others
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due or devise harm against your neighbor. Don't envy a man of violence because God is intimate and blesses the upright. He gives grace to the afflicted. The wise inherit honor, but fools display dishonor (Prov. 3:27-35). Wisdom does good to others and leads to intimacy, blessing, grace and honor.

For application, consider these instruction to sons to gain the benefits of wisdom:
1.  Do not forget my teaching but let your heart keep my commandments
2.  Do not reject discipline, instruction of the Lord or resent His reproof
3. Whom the Lord loves He reproves, even as a father whom he delights
4. Keep sound wisdom and discretion; do not let them out of your sight (Prov. 3:1,11,12,21)

God Opens Unexpected Doors of Blessings (Insights in Law)

3/10/2011

Picture
Change is often fearful and messy, but can be the time of your greatest blessings. Getting depledged from a fraternity in college allowed me to discover  Jesus Christ personally after meeting a new friend in a dorm. Taking a journalism class 16 years after I graduated from college was the first step in writing a Christian growth curriculum and even this blog. When Jacob left the familiarity of Canaan and faced a new life in Egypt, he was fearful. However, God opened an unexpected door of blessing for Jacob by reuniting with his son, Joseph, whom he thought was dead.

The Lord appeared to Israel in a vision after offering sacrifices to God in Beersheba. He was told to not fear but enter Egypt where God would make a great nation and accompany Jacob his whole life. The sons of Israel carried him, his children and wives in wagons Pharaoh provided. They took their livestock and property acquired in Canaan and came to Egypt (Gen. 46:1-7). Change provides unexpected doors of opportunity for God's provision and leadership into new pathways.

Scripture lists all 66 of Jacob's descendants who came to Egypt, not including the wives of his sons. In addition, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph and Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On (Gen. 46:8-27). God cares for your family in times of transition.

Joseph and Israel (Jacob) were overcome with joy after meeting each other. Joseph instructed his brothers to answer that they were keepers of livestock and not shepherds when Pharaoh asked about their occupation. Shepherds were an abomination to Egyptians (Gen. 46:28-34). Wisdom in dealing with the world secures favor, relationships and blessings.

Just like Joseph, Christians in positions of authority can open doors of blessings. These extend to service opportunities as you will see in the next chapter.

Consider the following four questions:
1. Describe how God used times of change and transition in your life?
2. Describe the blessings that you and your family received?
3. How did God care for you and your family?
4. What wisdom did God impart to you to secure favor, relationships and blessings?

Power of Fathers (Insights in Law)

11/15/2010

Picture
Being a father is my toughest and most important job. Most of our social problems can be traced to absent and unloving fathers. According to research, involved and loving fathers have children with higher academic and economic achievement, better psychological well-being, more overall life satisfaction, higher self-acceptance and social competence, more tolerant and understanding and less substance abuse and drinking. In Gen. 27, you see this research confirmed through the family of Isaac.

When Isaac was old and couldn't see, he told his older son, Esau, to hunt game and prepare a savory dish so he could bless him. Rebekah, Isaac's wife, overheard the conversation and asked the younger son, Jacob, to deceive his father by preparing food so Isaac would think it came from Esau (Gen. 27:1-10).
You learn deception and lying from the poor example of parents who show favoritism.

Jacob said to his mother that his father might figure out the deception leading to a curse and not a blessing. Rebekah responded, "Your curse be on me, only obey my voice and get them for me.” She took Esau's best garments to put on Jacob and gave him savory food and bread to present to Jacob (Gen. 27:12-17).

Isaac wondered how he got it so quickly. Isaac said, “Because the Lord your God caused it to happen to me.” When he smelled his garments, he blessed Jacob instead of Esau. Isaac said his smell was like the field the Lord had blessed. He blessed Jacob with a comprehensive blessing:

1. Give him God's dwelling place (dew of heaven)
2. Give him physical earth with land and people
3. Provide abundance of grain & new wine
4. Allow people to serve him
5. Enable nations to bow down to him
6. Become master over his brothers so they bow down to him
7. Curse (render powerless to resist) those who curse him and bless those who favor him (Gen. 27:27-29). Blessing our children assure their success, ability to get along with others and to develop an intimate relationship with God.

When Esau presented his savory food and Isaac learned it was him, he trembled violently. Esau cried out with a exceedingly great and bitter cry,
“Bless me, even me also, O my father! . . . Jacob took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing. Have you not reserved a blessing for me?” When children experience injustice, they respond with deep hurt, fear, and and anxiety.

Isaac said to Esau, “Behold, I made him your master and all his relatives I have given as servants and with grain and new wine I have sustained him. What can I do, my son?" (Gen. 27:30-38). Fathers experience a deep emotional reaction when they face the consequences of showing favoritism or taking advantage of their children.

Isaac said to Esau: “Away from the fertility of the earth shall be your dwelling, and away from the dew of heaven from above. And by your sword you shall live, and your brother you shall serve; but it shall come about when you become restless, that you shall break his yoke from your neck." (Gen. 27:39-40). Cursing your children accomplishes just the opposite of blessing where you assure their failure, inability to get along with others and distant relationship with God.

Esau bore a grudge and sought to kill Jacob because their father blessed him instead. To protect her son, Jacob, from Esau, Rebekah told him to flee to Haran where her brother, Laban, lived. She told Isaac that she was tired of living if Jacob married a  daughter of Heth (Gen. 27:41-46). Family relationships produce strong emotions of deep hurt and trauma that must be overcome through blessing, praise and favor shown toward your children.

Fathers must identify and be fully aware what their children are experiencing so they don’t feel slighted or taken advantage. Paul commanded fathers to not provoke their  children to anger, that they may not lose heart (Col. 3:21).

Ask God how you can bless your children practically through encouragement and availability.

Affirmation Provides Context for Kingdom Expansion (Insights in NT)

11/13/2010

Picture
When people aren't affirmed or cast aside by a father or the body of Christ, they are scarred and hindered from being His instruments in spreading the kingdom of God. Depression and feelings of inadequacy demoralize and make them impotent. In contrast, God the Father's affirmation of  Jesus Christ as His beloved Son in whom He was well-pleased empowered Him to spread the kingdom of God.

John the Baptist prepares the way of Jesus so people confess their sins and received forgiveness.  Jesus baptizes or identifies you in the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:1-8).

After Christ was baptized by John, He saw the heavens opened  and Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. A voice came out of heaven saying this was His beloved Son of whom He was well-pleased. Satan then tempted Christ in the wilderness (Mark 1:9-13). A son or daughter receiving a blessing and unconditional love from an earthly father allows their relationship with the heavenly Father to become more real to them. Your identity in Christ as God's beloved son provides the context to withstand the world's temptations and spread the kingdom of God in the world.

Confessing sins and putting complete trust in the gospel during each moment of the day allows you to overcome temptation in spreading the kingdom of God. How do you trust the gospel? By following Jesus, not the world system. What is the result?  You don't live for yourself, but become fishers of men (Mark 1:14-20):
What activities does a fisher of men do? See the following:
First Priority: Feed Upon God's Word
1. Listen and respond to Jesus' authoritative teaching through the Scriptures (Mark 1:21-22)

Second Priority: Meet Felt Needs
2. Command unclean spirits to come out of people in the name of Christ (Mark 1:23-28)
3. Heal sicknesses, diseases and demon-possessed in Christ's name (Mark 1:29-34).

Third Priority: Pray & Preach Christ
4. Continuous and constant prayer to determine what Christ wants you to do (Mark 1:35-38a)
5. Preach gospel of Christ (Mark 1:38b-39a)

Fourth Priority: Show Compassion to Disenfranchised
6. Cast out demons (Mark 1:39b)
7. Show love to "lepers" or marginalized (Mark 1:40-44)

As a result of Christ being affirmed on a human level, the kingdom of God spread to the leper who shared the good news of Jesus freely so that people came to Him from everywhere (Mark 1:45).

Have you received a blessing and unconditional love from your father?
If not, ask a trusted Christian leader who knows you to pray and pronounce words of blessing and love over you.

Troubles Ignite Prayer and Heavenly Help (insight in Psalms)

8/19/2010

Picture
If you are like me, I exhaust every ounce of strength before I call upon God for help. When I misplace my keys, I go around the house like a chicken with its head cut off before it dawns on me, "Have you prayed about it?" If I'm going through a frustrating circumstance, my default mode is complaining to God or someone instead of praising Him. We are to rejoice always, pray without ceasing and give thanks for all things (1 Thess. 5:16-18). When, where, what, how and why do we access this great resource in the person of our heavenly Father instead of relying on human strategies?

When and Where Do We Access God?
If we never had troubles, we wouldn't seek God. The Psalmist knew where to find help. He looked toward the sanctuary whenever trouble arose (Ps. 20:1-2). Today, we find access to God in our heart since we are temple of the Holy Spirit.

What Prerequisites Enable Us to Access God?
The meal and burnt offerings listed in Ps. 20:3 signify a total surrender and sacrifice of our lives to God where we desire divine, not human support. God will fulfill our purpose if we seek Him above anything else. Deliverance from trouble doesn't come externally, but from our innermost being where God dwells (Ps. 20:4).

How Do We Access God?
We find true joy, freedom and prosperity from God. He demonstrates love in action through answered prayer (Ps. 20:5-9). Our prayers and praise to God show that He is king instead of human resources designed to make our life more comfortable. I believe trouble facilitates a refocusing of our eyes on Christ and not creature comforts that so easily distract us.

Why Do We Access God?
Troubles allow us to find our joy and strength in our relationship with God (Ps. 21:1-3). Real life comes in answer to prayer. So much of our lives are wrapped around possessions, power or prestige (Ps. 21:4). We are deceived in thinking that exercise, cosmetics money, position and connections buy beauty, honor and glory. We obtain them as a gift in answer to prayer.

To be a committed prayer warrior, he or she must see God as the exalted and Supreme Being of the universe (Ps. 21:7). Those who walk with God trust Him to defeat any enemy or obstacle thwarting the fulfillment of His will (Ps. 21:8-13).

What trouble are you facing? What is hindering you from seeking God in prayer? Go to God right now as the exalted Supreme being of the universe.

Blessed to Be A Blessing (insights in the Law)

Picture
None of us choose our family. Our family of origin makes a huge difference concerning which opportunities we encounter in life. In my family, I learned the value of hard work and what it takes to succeed. It was a foregone conclusion I would go to college. This step opened up additional possibilities for me personally and vocationally. Through the life of Abram, we will see how God blesses us so we can be a blessing to others.

An earlier blog taught how the family line of Shem produced Enoch who was  taken up to heaven and Noah who saved the world during the universal flood. In contrast, the line of Ham produced Cush that lead to pride and the tower of Babel. Two families with two different destinies. One for good and the other for evil.

More is required from those who have been given much. Abram was also from the line of Shem like Enoch and Noah. God told Abram to leave his home and family to the land that He would show him (Gen. 12:1). He would make a great nation from Abraham's descendants. God would bless and make his name great so he would be a blessing to the whole world. In addition, God would impart a blessing to those who bless Abram and curse those who cursed him. We define blessings as welfare, benefit and peace and curses as despise, insignificant, lightly esteemed and contempt. Those who curse Abram would be bound, hemmed in with obstacles and rendered powerless to resist. Finally, every family of the earth would be blessed through Abram (Gen. 12:2-3).

The unconditional promise God gave Abram is like receiving millions of dollars and a multitude of secret service agents for protection. How did Abram respond to this unbelievable promise? Abram left his hometown of Ur, but partially obeyed by not leaving his father's house completely. He took his father, Terah, and his nephew, Lot. Terah died in Haran after leaving Ur (Gen. 11:31-32; 12:4-5).

God not only concerns Himself with the spiritual aspects of our lives, but our earthly lives as well (physical, social, mental and emotional aspects). Abram walked through the land and passed key landmarks that reminded him of the promise--real land, real dirt, hills, trees -- real places that anyone could see (Gen. 12:6-8). Abram set up his tent and built an altar between Bethel, meaning house of God, and Ai, meaning ruin. Why is this significant?

God wanted Abram to live in balance, close to God and close to people. Notice the phrase in Gen. 12:6 about the Canaanite being in the land. Abram could be a witness of God without isolating himself from the people he was supposed to reach. Abram didn’t keep God’s blessings for himself but shared them freely since his mission was to be a blessing to others.

God intended us to be models or representatives of Christ in our day-to-day lives. We are examples without even opening our mouths! In Abram's case, he was not a perfect example. Not only did he bring Lot with him, but he didn't trust God's provision since he moved to Egypt because of famine in Canaan (Gen. 12:9-10). He also lacked faith in God's protection because Abram lied to Pharaoh saying Sarai was is sister. He feared being killed if Pharaoh found out Sarai was really his wife (Gen. 12:11-20).

Jesus Christ offers Himself to every person. Have you received Him as your personal Savior through faith in His death on the cross for the forgiveness of sin? If so, are you trusting His provision and protection for each area of your life or are you anxious or fearful? Thank God right now that in Abraham you have been blessed spiritually,
physically, socially, mentally, vocationally and emotionally.
