Embrace Values Opposite of Modern Day Christianity

I attended a Christian conference all excited about applying what I learned. Things went well for several days until I fell into my old habits of trusting myself instead of God.

Do you get discouraged that many Christians are indistinguishable from unbelievers? Their compromising lifestyles conform to the world. Instead of being on fire for God, they are lukewarm. Passiveness instead of passion becomes their calling card. They refuse to believe if it's risky.

Therefore, they adopt the path of least resistance. They coexist with sin instead of confessing it. They depend upon themselves instead of the Holy Spirit. They practice mediocrity and not excellence; fear and not faith; and avoidance, not activism. Despite what is seen today, John the Baptist is one example to follow that will help yourself and others.

1. Understand people’s basic spiritual needs
In the 15th year of Tiberius Caesar when Pontius Pilate was governor, John preached a baptism of repentance and the forgiveness of sin. From Isaiah, he quoted, ". . . Make ready the way of the Lord, make His paths straight. . . . And all flesh shall see the salvation of God" (Luke 3:1-6). Preach Christ for forgiveness of sin so people admit sin to receive Him as Savior.

2. Build on conversion experience
John told the multitudes to "bring forth fruits in keeping with repentance" and not rely on their physical heritage in Abraham. True spiritual children would be born when bad fruit was cut down and burned. He told them to share basic necessities like food and clothing with others. In response to a tax-gatherer's question, John told him to collect the right amount and to a soldier, not to take money by force or accuse anyone falsely, but be content with his wages. (Luke 3:7-14). Repent of sin to be an example of God’s faith and power.

3. Rely on the Holy Spirit
People wondered whether John was Christ. John said he baptized with water, but a mightier One was coming who baptized with the Holy Spirit and fire. This Mightier One would burn the chaff with unquenchable fire. (Luke 3:15-17). Rely on the Holy Spirit for power to live a pure and holy life reflecting Jesus and His works.

4. Expect persecution
John confronted Herod for marrying his brother's wife, Herodias. His proclamations against Herod got him imprisoned
(Luke 3:18-20). Obey Christ without compromise to experience persecution by the world (this is a good thing because we experience the kingdom of heaven: Matthew 5:10).

5. Pray expectantly
After John was baptized and prayed for Jesus, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him. A voice from heaven said to Jesus, "Thou art My beloved Son, in Thee I am well-pleased" (Luke 3:21-22). Pray to feel God’s love and care profoundly.

6. Expect help from Jesus
Because Jesus as the God-man went through life like any other human being, He will come to your aid (Luke 3:23-38). Pray and ask God for help.

Action Steps:
    1. Ask the Holy Spirit to give me a fire for God.
    2. Pray for the filling of the Holy Spirit in my life.
    3. Confess all known sin and refuse any compromise.

How to Reign with Christ and Shepherd the Nations (Insights in NT)

6/11/2013

Picture
A person reigns with Christ and shepherds the nations by:
1. Walk in Christ's love doing first works
2. Endure suffering, poverty and persecution
3. Obey teaching from whole counsel of God
4. Be pure without compromise or idolatry
5. Walk in Christ's victory to overcome busyness and over-confidence
6. Embrace evangelistic opportunities relying on God
7. Listen to Jesus' voice for zealous service and fervent prayer

Walk in Christ's Love Doing First Works for Real Living
Christ knew the deeds, hard work and perseverance of the church in Ephesus. It could not tolerate wicked men and tested those who claimed to be apostles that were found false. They did not grow weary enduring hardships for His name. They must repent of forsaking their first love and do the things they did at first. Otherwise, Christ would remove the lampstand from its place if they did not repent. He was pleased they hated the practices of the Nicolaitans. By overcoming, He would give the right to eat from the tree of life in the paradise of God (Rev. 2:1-7). Walk in Christ's love doing works you did at first for real living.

Endure Suffering, Poverty and Persecution to Receive Crown of Life
Christ considered Smyrna rich in their afflictions and poverty. He knew the slander of a synagogue of Satan who said they were Jews, but were not. Christ told them not to fear suffering as the devil would put some in prison to be tested and persecuted for ten days. He would give them the crown of life if they were faithful, even to death. Those who overcame would not be hurt by the second death (Rev. 2:8-11). Endure suffering, poverty and persecution to receive the crown of life.

Obey Teaching From Whole Counsel of God to Receive Provision and Blessing
Christ knew Pergamum lived where Satan had his throne, yet remained true to His name without renouncing their faith. They were to repent because some held the teaching of the Nicolaitans and others held to Balaam's teaching who taught Balak to entice Israel to sin by eating foods sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality. He would fight against them with the sword of His mouth. Those who overcame would be given hidden manna and a white stone with a new name written on it known only to him who received it (Rev. 2:12-17). Obey teaching from whole counsel of God to receive provision and blessing.

Be Pure Without Compromise and Idolatry for Reigning and Shepherding to Receive Christ as Reward
Christ knew Thyatira's deeds, love, faith, service and perseverance. Their later works were greater than those done at first. However, they tolerated Jezebel who misled His servants into sexual immorality and eating foods sacrificed to idols. Because she was unwilling to repent of her immorality, Christ put her on a bed of suffering. Those who committed adultery with her would suffer intensely unless they repented of her ways. Others who did not hold onto her teaching or learned Satan's deep secrets would have no other burden. Those who overcame and did His will to the end would have authority over the nations by ruling with an iron scepter and given the morning star (Rev. 2:18-29). Be pure without compromise or idolatry for reigning with Him and shepherding the nations to receive Christ as your reward.

Walk in Christ's Victory to Overcome Busyness and Over-Confidence for His Acceptance
Christ knew Sardis' deeds and their reputation of being alive, but really dead. He commanded them to wake up and strengthen what remained and near death for their deeds were not found complete in God's sight. They were to obey and repent after remembering what they received and heard. If they did not wake up, He would come like a thief.  A few worthy people did not soil their clothes and walked with Him. Overcomers were dressed in white with their names never erased from the book of life. Christ would acknowledge His name before His Father and angels (Rev. 3:1-6). Walk in Christ's victory to overcome busyness and over-confidence for His acceptance.

Embrace Evangelistic Opportunities Relying On God to Gain Stability and Honor
What Jesus opened no one could shut and what He shut no one could open. He placed an open door before them that no one could shut. He knew they had little strength, but they kept His word and did not deny His name. He made those of Satan's synagogue who claimed to be Jews but lied to fall down at their feet and acknowledge God loved them. Because they kept His command to endure patiently, He kept them from the hour of trial to test those on the earth. Because He was coming soon, they were to hold on to what they had so no one would take their crown. He made overcomers a pillar in His temple and wrote on them God's name and the name of the city of His God, the new Jerusalem, which would come down out of heaven from Him. He would write on him His new name (Rev. 3:7-13).
Embrace evangelistic opportunities relying on God to gain stability and honor from Him.

Listen to Jesus' Voice for Zealous Service and Fervent Prayer to Sit on His Throne
Christ knew that since Laodicea's deeds were neither cold nor hot, but lukewarm, He would spit them out of His mouth. By acquiring wealth, they considered themselves rich without needs. Christ said they failed to realize their wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked state. He counseled them to buy from Him gold refined in fire to become rich, white clothes to wear so they could cover their shameful nakedness and eye salve so they could see. Because Christ rebuked and disciplined those He loved, they should be earnest and repent. If anyone heard His voice and opened the door, He would go in and eat with him and he with Him. Overcomes had the right to sit with Christ on His throne like He did with His Father on His throne (Rev. 3:14-22). Listen to Jesus' voice for zealous service and fervent prayer so you can sit on His throne.

Ask God to enable you to reign with Christ and shepherd the nations as you walk in Christ's love, endure suffering, be pure, walk in His victory, embrace evangelistic opportunities and listen to His voice for zealous service and fervent prayer.

Proclaiming God's Truth to Extend the Gospel (Insights in NT)

Picture
Proclaiming God's truth to extend the gospel is seen by testing the spirits to distinguish truth from falsehood, love God and others through the Holy Spirit, pray for sinning brothers to be kept safe from the evil one and idols, walk in Christ's teaching without welcoming false teachers, and support gospel workers with hospitality and finances.

Test Spirits to Distinguish Truth from Falsehood
They should test the spirits because of many false prophets in the world. God's Spirit overcame the spirit of the antichrist and acknowledged that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. Those from God listened to truth and the world to falsehood, which distinguished the the Spirit of truth from the spirit of falsehood (1 John 4:1-6). Test spirits to distinguish truth from falsehood whether they say Jesus Christ came in the flesh.

Love One Another Through the Holy Spirit
They could love one another because love came from God. Only those born of God and knew Him could love because He was love. He showed His love by sending His only Son into the world as an atoning sacrifice for their sin so they might live through Him. By loving God, they made His love complete and showed He lived in them. He gave His Spirit to show they lived in Him and He in them.  They saw and testified that the Father sent Jesus to be the world's Savior. By acknowledging Jesus as the Son of God, He lived in them and they in Him. They knew and relied on His love because God was love (1 John 4:7-16). Love one another through the Holy Spirit because God sent His Son as a sacrifice for sin.

Love God and Others Without Fear Because He First Loved You
By living in love, they became like God and confident in the day of judgment. Love contained no fear. Those with fear were not made perfect in love because love drove out the fear of punishment. They loved because God first loved them. Those who said they loved Him and hated their brothers lied.  People who did not love their brother whom they saw could not love God whom they did not see. He commanded those who loved Him to love their brothers (1 John 4:17-21). Love God and others without fear because He first loved you.

Obey His Commands Believing in Jesus as the Son of God
Those believing that Jesus was the Christ were born of God loving both the Father and His Son. Those who loved God and carried out His commands proved they loved His children. Loving God meant obeying His commands, which were not burdensome, since everyone born of Him overcame the world. Faith was the victory to overcome the world--believing in Jesus as the Son of God. Jesus came by water and blood with the Spirit of truth testifying in agreement. Believers in the Son of God had this testimony in their heart, but unbelievers made Him out as a liar. The testimony was that God gave them eternal life through His Son. He who had the Son had life and he who did not have the Son of God did not have life (1 John 5:1-12). Obey His commands believing in Jesus as the Son of God to overcome the world and gain eternal life.

The basis for obedience is Jesus coming in the flesh as a sacrifice for sin demonstrating God's love for you. You obey His commands by believing in Jesus as the Son of God to overcome the world and gain eternal life.

Pray Confidently for Sinning Brothers to Be Kept Safe from Evil One
John wrote these things to those who believed in the Son of God so they would know they had eternal life. They could be confident of answered prayer if they asked anything according to His will knowing that God heard them. Those who saw his brother commit sin not leading to death should pray knowing God would give him life. All wrong doing was sin and there was sin not leading to death. Those born of God did not continue in sin, but were kept safe so the evil one could not harm them. Children of God knew the world was under the control of the evil one. The Son of God came and gave them understanding to know the true God and eternal life so they could be kept from idols (1 John 5:13-21). Pray confidently for sinning brothers to be kept safe from the evil one and idols.

Walk in Christ's Teaching for Full Reward Without Welcoming False Teachers
John wrote to those with children who lived in truth and love through Jesus Christ. He had great joy to find some children walking in truth as the Father commanded. John reminded them that love was walking in obedience to His commands. Many deceivers and antichrists in the world did not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. John warned them to not lose what they worked for so they could be rewarded fully. Those not continuing in Christ's teaching did not have God, but those continuing in it had both the Father and Son. Anyone welcoming someone without this teaching shared in their wicked work. Instead of writing additional details, John hoped to talk in person so his joy would be complete (2 John). Walk in Christ' teaching for full reward without welcoming false teachers.

Support Gospel Workers with Hospitality and Finances
John prayed that his friend Gaius would enjoy good health and for his soul to prosper. He had no greater joy than his children walking in truth continually. Gaius showed love to strangers by sending them on their way worthy of God. They went out for His Name without help from unbelievers. By showing hospitality to strangers, they worked together for the truth, unlike Diotrephes who loved to be first. If John came, he would call attention to his malicious gossiping, refusing to welcome the brothers, stopping and putting those out of the church who did. People who did good were from God and those doing evil had not seen God. Demetrius was well spoken by everyone because he followed truth (3 John). Support gospel workers with hospitality and finances for physical and spiritual prosperity.

Answer the following questions about proclaiming God's truth to extend the gospel:
1. Are you testing the spirits to distinguish truth from falsehood?
2. Do you love God and others through the Holy Spirit?
3. Are you praying for sinning brothers to be kept safe from the evil one and idols
4. Are you walking in Christ's teaching and not welcoming false teachers?
5. Do you support gospel workers with hospitality and finances?

Proclaim God's Truth for Joyful Fellowship (Insights in NT)

Picture
The results of proclaiming God's truth for joyful fellowship include:
1. Walk like Jesus by loving God and others
2. Grow spiritually with forgiven sins, overcome evil one and know God so you don't love the world
3. Listen to the Holy Spirit's teaching ministry and prevent being led astray by lies
4. Fix your hope on Christ's coming to be purified from sin
5. Share material possessions with the needy to show love
6. Receive answered prayer by obeying His commands and pleasing Him through the Holy Spirit

Proclaim God's Truth for Joyful Fellowship

They proclaimed the Word of life that was from the beginning. They testified what was heard, seen and touched concerning eternal life. They wanted  others have the joy of fellowship with them and their Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. They declared that God was light without darkness. People lied by claiming to have fellowship with Him and not living by the truth. By walking in the light of God, they had fellowship with one another. The blood of Jesus, His Son, purified them from every sin. They deceived themselves and the truth was not in them by claiming to be without sin. If they confessed their sins, He was faithful and just to forgive their sins and purify them from all unrighteousness. They made Him a liar and His word had no place in their lives by claiming they had not sinned (1 John 1:1-10). Proclaim His truth for joyful fellowship with God and others.

Walk Like Jesus By Loving God and Others
John wrote these things so they would not sin. Jesus, the Righteous One and atoning sacrifice for their sins, was their advocate to the Father if they sinned. They knew Him and His love was made complete in them by obeying His commands. Those who walked as Jesus did knew they were in Him. If they claimed to be in the light and hated their brother, they were in darkness. Those who loved their brother lived in the light and nothing made them stumble. By hating their brother, they walked in darkness and were blind (1 John 2:1-11). Walk like Jesus by obeying His commands to love God and others.

Grow Spiritually with Forgiven Sins, Overcome Evil One and Know God
John wrote to his children because their sins were forgiven because of His name. He wrote to fathers because they knew Him who was from the beginning. He wrote to young men because they overcame the evil one. He wrote to his children because they knew the Father. He wrote to fathers because they knew Him who was from the beginning. He wrote to young men because they were strong, word of God lived in them and they overcame the evil one. Those who loved the world or anything in it did not have Father's love in them. The lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and boasting of what he had or did came not from the Father, but the world. The world and its desires passed away, but those who did God's will lived forever (1 John 2:12-17). Grow spiritually with forgiven sins, overcome evil one and know God so you don't love the world.

Listen to Holy Spirit's Teaching Ministry to Prevent Being Led Astray
Knowing that many antichrists went out from the church proved they were not true believers. The anointing from the Holy One enabled them to know the truth. The liar denied the Father, Son and that Jesus was the Christ. They remained in the Son and Father by making sure they remained in what they heard from the beginning. He promised eternal life. The anointing received from Him taught them all things to prevent being led astray (1 John 2:18-27). Listen to the Holy Spirit's teaching ministry to prevent being led astray by lies.

Fix Hope on Christ's Coming for Purification from Sin
Continuing in Christ allowed them to be confident without shame at His coming. The Father lavished His love to be called children of God. The world did not know them because it did not know Him. In the future when Christ appeared again, they would be like Him because they saw Him as He was. Even this hope purified everyone. Those who sinned broke the law. Christ who was without sin appeared to take away sin. People who saw, knew or lived in Him did not continue sinning being righteous like Him. Sinful folks were of the devil since they sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared to destroy the devil's work. Someone's new nature could not sin being born of God. Children of the devil sinned being unrighteousness and not loving their brothers (1 John 2:28-3:10). Fix your hope on Christ's coming to be purified from sin.

Share Material Possessions with Needy to Show Love
Cain belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother because his actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. The world hated true believers. Loving their brothers proved they passed from death to life. Those who hated their brothers were murderers without eternal life in Him. Laying down one's life for his brother followed Jesus' example who laid down his life for them. They showed love by sharing material possessions with their needy brother. Love meant actions and truth, not words or tongue (1 John 3:11-20). Share material possessions with the needy to show love.

Receive Answered Prayer Through Obedience
Those confident before God received anything they asked from Him because they obeyed His commands and did what pleased Him. They knew He lived in them by the Spirit He gave (1 John 3:21-24). Receive answered prayer by obeying His commands and pleasing Him through the Holy Spirit.

Answer the following questions that are results of proclaiming God's truth for joyful fellowship:
1. Are you walking like Jesus by loving God and others?
2. Are you growing spiritually by having your sins forgiven, evil one overcome and God known so you don't love the world?
3. Are you listening to the Holy Spirit's teaching ministry to prevent being led astray by lies?
4. Are you fixing your hope on Christ's coming to be purified from sin?
5. Are you sharing material possessions with the needy to show love?
6. Are you receiving answered prayer by obeying His commands and pleasing Him through the Holy Spirit?

Study God's Promises to Grow in Christ (Insights in NT)

5/26/2013

Picture
Study and remind yourself of God's promises in His word to avoid false teaching and being entangled in the world's corruption after escaping it. Repent and understand His word to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ.

Study God's Promises and Add Character to Your Faith
God's divine power gave everything needed for life and godliness through knowing Him. He called them to His glory and goodness through His precious promises to participate in the divine nature and escape the world's corruption caused by evil desires. They made every effort to add to their faith goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness and love. Having these qualities in increasing measure kept them effective and productive in their knowledge of Christ, proved their cleansing from past sins and made their calling and election sure without falling. They received a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 1:1-11). Study God's promises and add character to your faith for participating in the divine nature.

Allow a Mentor to Remind You of God's Love and His Word
Peter refreshed their memory to never forget these things after being firmly established in the truth. He was an eyewitness of Christ's majesty when he heard God say, "This is my Son, whom I love: with Him I am well pleased." They must pay attention to the prophets until the morning star arose in their hearts. No prophecy of Scripture came from the prophet's will or interpretation, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God (2 Pet. 1:12-21). Allow a mentor to remind you of God's love and His word.

Avoid False Teaching to Remind Yourself of God's Judgment
False prophets and teachers secretly introduced destructive heresies denying the Lord who brought swift destruction upon them. False teachers disregarded truth and exploited believers with made-up stories. God sent sinning angels to hell for judgment, brought the flood upon the ungodly and burned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to make them an example. He protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with his family; and rescued Lot, a righteous man, distressed by the lawless deeds he saw and heard. God knew how to rescue godly men from trials and punish the unrighteous in the day of judgment (2 Pet. 2:1-9).  Avoid false teaching to remind yourself of God's judgment of sin in Scripture.

Reject Entanglement in World's Corruption After Escaping It
Those with corrupt sinful natures who despised authority and slandered heavenly beings were paid back with harm. As experts in greed, they caroused in daylight filled with adultery, sinned continually and seduced the unstable. They followed the way of Balaam who loved the wages of wickedness being rebuked by a donkey that restrained the prophet's madness. These slaves of depravity mouthed empty and boastful words, appealed to the lust of sinful human nature and enticed those who just escaped from people living in error by promising freedom. They were worse off if they became entangled again and defeated after escaping the world's corruption by knowing Christ. It was better not to know the way of righteousness than to know and turn their backs on the sacred commandment like a dog returning to its vomit (2 Pet. 2:10-22). Reject entanglement in the world's corruption after escaping it by knowing Christ.

Repent Before Christ Comes Back Like a Thief
Peter stimulated them to wholesome thinking through the prophets and apostles. In the last days, scoffers followed their evil desires doubting Christ's second coming. They forgot that God's word created the heavens and earth and He destroyed the world with water. In the future, He would destroy the heavens and earth and judged ungodly men. The Lord was patient in keeping His promise not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone come to repentance. The day of the Lord would come like a thief when the heavens disappeared with a roar, elements destroyed by fire and the earth laid bare (2 Pet. 3:1-10). Repent before Christ comes back like a thief when the earth will be destroyed.

Understand Bible Accurately to Grow in Grace and Knowledge of Christ
They should live holy and godly lives since the world would be laid bare while looking forward to a new heaven and new earth, the home of righteousness. They should be spotless, blameless and at peace with God. The Lord's patience meant salvation as Paul wrote. His letters contained some things hard to understand that ignorant and unstable people distorted like other Scriptures to their own destruction. Therefore, being on guard and not carried away by the error of lawless men to fall from their secure position, they were to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ for His glory (2 Pet. 3:11-18).  Understand the Bible accurately so you can grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ.

Study God's promises daily to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ.

Being Equipped As A Shepherd (Insights in NT)

5/24/2013

Picture
Those who live by the Spirit in prayer, love, hospitality and spiritual gifts see God's glory as they participate in Christ's suffering. They are then equipped to shepherd His flock and receive the crown of life while experiencing exaltation, restoration and strengthening through humility and standing firm in the faith.

Live in the Spirit By Obeying Preached Gospel
People should arm themselves with Christ's attitude toward suffering because He was done with sin, not living for evil human desires, but the will of God. Worldly people abused those who did not live in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.  Everyone must give an account to God since He judged the living and the dead. For this reason, the gospel was preached so they might live according to Him in the spirit (1 Pet. 4:1-6). Live in the spirit by obeying the preached gospel.

Glorify Christ Through Prayer, Love, Hospitality and Spiritual Gifts
Because the end was near, they should be clear minded and self-controlled for the purpose of prayer. Loving deeply covered a multitude of sins, including offering hospitality without grumbling. By faithfully administering God's grace through their spiritual gift, they spoke His words and served with His strength for the praise, glory and power of Christ (1 Pet. 4:7-11). Glorify Christ through praying, loving others, offering hospitality and exercising your spiritual gift.

See God's Glory By Participating in Christ's Suffering Obeying the Gospel
Instead of being surprised about painful trials, they should rejoice about participating in Christ's sufferings when His glory was revealed. They were blessed when insulted because of Christ's name since the Spirit of glory and God rested on them. They should praise God instead of being ashamed about suffering as a Christian. If judgment began with the family of God, what was the outcome for those who did not obey His gospel? If it was hard for the righteous to be saved, what about the ungodly and the sinner? Those who suffered according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator in doing good (1 Pet. 4:12-19). See God's glory by participating in Christ's sufferings as you obey the gospel.

Receive Crown of Glory By Shepherding God's Flock
Peter witnessed Christ's sufferings and appealed to his fellow elders who also could share in His future glory. They should shepherd and serve God's flock willingly and eagerly as overseers. By not being greedy for money and lording over those entrusted to them, they were examples to the flock. When the Chief Shepherd appeared, they would receive the eternal crown of glory (1 Pet. 5:1-4). Receive the crown of glory by shepherding God's flock willingly and eagerly as a witness to Christ's sufferings.

Experience Exaltation and Restoration by Humility and Standing Firm
Young men should be submissive to their elders in humility. God opposed the proud, but gave grace to the humble. He lifted them up in due time when they humbled themselves under His mighty hand. They were to cast their anxiety upon Him because He cared for them. Their self-control and alertness allowed them to see the devil who prowled like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. They resisted him by standing firm in the faith knowing their brothers  experienced similar sufferings. Afterward, the God of all grace who called them to His eternal glory in Christ restored and brought strength, firmness and steadfastness. Silas helped Peter write brief and encouraging words to stand fast in God's true grace (1 Pet. 5:5-14). Experience exaltation, restoration and strengthening by humility and standing firm in suffering.

Ask God for the filling of the Holy Spirit so you can pray and love others while practicing hospitality and spiritual gifts in suffering and seeing His glory. Ask how and who He wants you to shepherd to be exalted, restored and strengthened.

How to Gain a Life-Giving Faith (Insights in NT)

5/10/2013

Picture
James explains how to gain a life-giving faith. Those who persevere joyfully in trials, study and apply God's word, love their rich and poor neighbors, express good works through their faith, praise God with their tongue and choose heavenly wisdom gain spiritual maturity, receive crown of life, express pure religion, show mercy and active faith, prevent corruption and bear righteousness.

Persevere Joyfully in Trials
When Christians considered trials as pure joy when their faith was tested, they developed perseverance, maturity and completeness without lacking anything. God gave generously without finding fault if they asked Him for wisdom in faith without doubts and double-mindedness. Those in humble circumstances were in a high position compared to the rich who faded away like a flower. Those who persevered under trial received the crown of life promised to those who loved God. Temptations were caused by evil desires. If birthed sin after conception leading to death when full-grown. Every good and perfect gift came from the Father of the heavenly lights who chose to birth people through the word of truth as firstfruits of all He created (James 1:1-18). Persevere joyfully in trials for spiritual maturity to gain the crown of life.

Study and Apply God's Word
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger in becoming righteous without moral filth. They humbly received the word implanted for salvation. Deception occurred when those listened to the word without obedience like looking in a mirror and forgetting what they looked like. Blessing came to those who looked intently and did according to the perfect law of liberty. Those who did not rein their tongue deceived themselves and had worthless religion. People with pure and faultless religion looked after orphans and widows in their distress and kept themselves unstained by the world (James 1:19-27). Study and apply God's word by speaking carefully, looking after orphans and widows and refusing worldliness.

Love Rich and Poor Neighbors
If believers showed favoritism or gave special attention to a rich person and discriminated against the poor, they became judges with evil motives. God chose the poor to be rich in faith and inherit the kingdom promised to those who love Him. The rich exploited, dragged people into court and slandered peoples' good name. People did good and kept the royal law by loving their neighbor as themselves. They sinned by showing favoritism. Whoever kept the whole law and stumbled in one point was guilty of breaking it. Judgment without mercy was shown to anyone who had not been merciful. Mercy triumphed over judgment (James 2:1-13). Love rich and poor neighbors by showing mercy and not judgment.

Express Good Works Through Your Active Faith
If someone told a brother or sister without clothes and daily food to be warm and well fed without helping their physical needs, his faith was worthless. Faith without works was dead and useless. Demons believed and shudder. Abraham was considered righteous when he offered his son Isaac on the altar. Faith and actions worked together to complete his faith by what he did. Abraham was called God's friend after he believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. People considered Rahab the prostitute righteous when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them in a different direction (James 2:14-26). Express good works through your active faith.

Praise God with Your Tongue
Those who presumed to be teachers were judged more strictly. By not stumbling in speech, they kept their body in check. Small parts like bits, rudders and tongues directed horses, ships and people, respectively. A small spark set a great forest on fire. Likewise, the tongue corrupted and set on fire the whole person being from hell, evil and full of deadly poison. The tongue praised God and cursed men who were made in His likeness. Fresh and salt water could not flow from the same spring. A salt spring could not produce fresh water (James 3:1-12). Praise God with your tongue to prevent corruption.

Choose Heavenly and Pure Wisdom
A wise and understanding person produced deeds done in humility. Bitter envy and selfish ambition that were earthly, unspiritual and devilish tempted a person to boast or deny it. It contained disorder and every evil practice. Wisdom from heaven was pure, peace loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sowed in peace raised a harvest of righteousness (James 3:13-18). Choose heavenly and pure wisdom as a peacemaker who bears a harvest of righteousness.

To gauge the condition of your faith, rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 (one being lowest and ten the highest) in the following areas:
1. Persevere joyfully in trials to gain spiritual maturity and crown of life
2. Study and apply God's word to express pure religion
3. Love your rich and poor neighbors to show mercy
4. Express good works through your active faith
5. Praise God with your tongue to prevent corruption
6. Choose heavenly wisdom to bear righteousness

How to Seek God and Exercise Faith for Eternal Reward (Insights in NT)

How does a person seek God and exercise faith for eternal reward? Hebrews 11-13 answer that question. Obey God in impossible situations requiring supernatural intervention. Bless others by choosing mistreatment and disgrace. Fight spiritual battles without knowing the results. Fix your eyes on Jesus submitting to His discipline. Worship God by living in peace and grace. Ask God to equip you in loving others.

Earnestly Seek God and Exercise Faith
Faith was assurance of what people hoped for and certainty of they did not see. By faith they understood that God created the universe at His command so what was seen was not made out of what was visible. Abel as a righteous man offered God a better sacrifice than Cain. God spoke well of his offering and by faith he still spoke even though dead. By faith Enoch pleased God who took him away so he did not experience death. Without faith it was impossible to please God, because anyone who came to Him but believe He existed and rewarded those who earnestly sought Him (Heb. 11:1-6). Earnestly seek God and exercise faith to please Him for eternal reward.

Obey God in Impossible Situations
By faith Noah built an ark to save his family, condemned the world and became an heir of righteousness. Abraham traveled to an unknown place and made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country as heirs of promise. He looked forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder was God. Though Abraham and Sarah were too old, they had a child and considered Him faithful who made the promise resulting in countless descendants like sand on the seashore. Not receiving things promised as aliens and strangers on earth, they longed for a heavenly country that God prepared for them. Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God tested him believing He would raise his son from the death (Heb. 11:7-19). Obey God in impossible situations requiring supernatural intervention to receive His promise.

Bless Others By Choosing Mistreatment and Disgrace
By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau regarding their future. Jacob blessed Joseph's sons when he was dying and worshiped God. Joseph gave instructions to transport his bones to Israel. Moses' parents hid him for three months after he was born not afraid of the king's edict. Moses chose to be mistreated with the people of God rather than enjoy sin's momentary pleasures. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ of greater value than the treasures of Egypt because he looked ahead to his reward. By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood so the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch Israel's firstborn. The people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians drowned when they tried (Heb. 11:20-29). Bless others by choosing mistreatment and disgrace to receive eternal reward.

Fight Spiritual Battles Without Knowing Results
Jericho's walls fell when the people marched around them for seven days. The prostitute Rahab welcomed the spies and was not killed with the disobedient. Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets conquered kingdoms, administered justice, gained what was promised, shut lions' mouths, escaped the edge of the sword and routed armies. Some were tortured and refused to be released so they might gain a better resurrection. They were stoned, sawed in two, put to death by the sword, persecuted and mistreated. The world was not worthy of them and none received what had been promised (Heb. 11:30-40). Fight spiritual battles without knowing the results.

Fix Your Eyes on Jesus Submitting to His Discipline
Since we have a great cloud of witnesses, throw off every hindrance and entanglement of sin to run the race with perseverance. By fixing their eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith who endured the cross with joy, scorned its shame and sat down at God's right hand, they would not grow weary and lose heart. In struggling against sin, they did not resist to the point of shedding blood, but took God's loving discipline seriously as a son. Without discipline, they would be illegitimate children. By submitting to discipline, they shared in His holiness and lived. Discipline seemed painful at first, but produced a harvest of righteousness and peace for those trained by it. By strengthening their feeble arms and weak knees and making level paths, they were healed (Heb. 12:1-13). Fix your eyes on Jesus submitting to His discipline so you can share His holiness.

Worship God by Living in Peace and Grace
They made every effort to live in peace because no one would see God without holiness. See that no one missed the grace of God, no bitter root grew up to defile many, no one was sexually immoral or godless like Esau who sold his inheritance for a single meal. They came to the city of the living God with thousands of angels, to the church of the firstborn whose names were written in heaven, to God and judge of all men, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant and to sprinkled blood better than Abel's. By receiving a kingdom that could not be shaken, they were thankful and worshiped God with reverence and awe since He was a consuming fire (Heb. 12:14-29). Worship God by living in peace and grace without bitterness, sexual immorality and temporal values.

Ask God to Equip You in Loving Others
By loving each other, they entertained strangers, remembered prisoners and those mistreated, and maintained purity in their marriage. God judged the adulterer and sexually immoral. He helped them be content, free from the love of money, and not fearing man. By considering the outcome of their leaders' way of life and God's word they spoke, they should imitate their faith. Jesus Christ was the same yesterday, today and forever. By strengthening their hearts with grace and not carried away by strange teachings, they should bear Christ's suffering and disgrace while looking for the eternal city. By continually offering sacrifices of praise to God, they should not forget doing good and sharing with others. Obeying and submitting to their leaders made their work a joy. Pray the God of peace through the blood of the eternal covenant who raised Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, from the dead, equip them with everything good to do His will in pleasing Him (Heb. 13:1-25). Ask God to equip you in loving others, being content, walking in grace, doing good and submitting to leaders.

To seek God and exercise faith for eternal reward, do the following:
1. Obey God in impossible situations requiring supernatural intervention
2. Bless others by choosing mistreatment and disgrace
3. Fight spiritual battles without knowing the results
4. Fix your eyes on Jesus submitting to His discipline
5. Worship God by living in peace and grace
6. Ask God to equip you in loving others, being content, walking in grace, doing good and submitting to leaders

Steps In Rescuing Prodigals (Insights in Prophets)

4/24/2013

God is active in rescuing prodigals  beginning with His sovereignty that spurs Him to action.  God's holiness protects prodigals from wrath, His love destroys those who harm them, His righteousness leads to godly lifestyle, His truth purifies their lips to call on Him and His power rescues them so they can walk with God.

The proper response of those who desire to rescue prodigals from sin is to reject complacency and idolatry, seek God in humility and righteousness, receive His inheritance, avoid a carefree lifestyle, wait on Him in truth without fear, and take delight in mighty God who empowers prodigals to walk with Him.

God's Sovereignty Spurs Him to Action
God said to Zephaniah during Josiah's reign that He would sweep everything from the earth. He would stretch His hand against those in Judah and Jerusalem who worshiped Baal and Molech without seeking God. He would punish those who filled the temple of their gods with violence and deceit along with the complacent who thought God was inactive. He plundered their wealth and demolished their houses. They would build houses and not live in them and plant vineyards and not drink the wine (Zeph. 1:1-13). Know God hates complacency, idolatry, violence and deceit.

God's Holiness Protects You From Wrath
The day of the Lord brought wrath, distress, anguish, trouble, ruin and gloom. People would walk like blind men because of sin. Their money could not save them. God's jealousy consumed and ended the whole world. The humble  who did what He commanded sought the Lord. They should seek righteousness and humility to gain shelter during the day of the Lord's anger (Zeph. 1:14-2:3). Seek God in humility and righteousness for protection from His wrath.

God's Love Destroys Those Who Harm You
God would destroy the Philistines so the remnant of Judah would dwell in the houses of Ashkelon. He cared and restored their fortunes. Moab and Ammon insulted and made threats against God's people who would inherit their land. After He destroyed all the gods of the land, every nation would worship Him (Zeph. 2:4-12). Receive His inheritance after He destroys every god that insults and threatens you.

God's Righteousness Leads to Godly Lifestyle
God would destroy Assyria and leave Nineveh desolate. This was a carefree city that lived in safety. Nineveh said that there was none besides her. Nineveh became a ruin with everyone scoffing at her (Zeph. 2:13-15). Avoid a carefree lifestyle that leads to ruin and scoffing.

God's Truth Purifies Your Lips
Zephaniah said Jerusalem was rebellious, accepted no correction and did not draw near to the Lord. Her officials were roaring lions, priests did violence to the law and  prophets were angry. God was righteous, dispensed justice and never failed. He demolished strongholds and destroyed cities. People acted corrupted and did not accept correction from God. They waited on Him for purified lips to call on His name. He removed those who rejoiced in pride only leaving the humble who trusted in God's name. Israel's remnant spoke no lies or deceit and no one made them afraid (Zeph. 3:1-13). Wait on God in truth without fear so purified lips can call on His name.

God's Power Rescues Prodigals
God turned back the enemy so Jerusalem did not fear. He was mighty to save and took great delight in them. He quieted them with His love and rejoiced over them with singing. God dealt with all who oppressed them, rescued the lame, gathered the scattered and gave them praise and honor in every land. He brought them home and  restored their fortunes before their eyes (Zeph. 3:14-20). Take delight in mighty God who rescues prodigals so they walk with Him.

Ask God to empower you in the following ways by rescuing prodigals from sin:
1. Reject complacency and idolatry
2. Seek God in humility and righteousness
3. Receive His inheritance
4. Avoid a carefree lifestyle
5. Wait on Him in truth without fear so you can call on Him
6. Delight in mighty God who rescues prodigals so they walk with Him

Make Christ Your Leader (Insights in Prophets)

4/9/2013

Picture
When Christ is your leader, you will unite as sons of the living God, speak tenderly to restore intimacy with God, love His people sacrificially so they seek redemption in Christ's blood, follow God's word to gain knowledge and understanding, admit guilt and seek Him for revival, expose your sin so you cry to Him for healing and seek God's approval for your actions to prevent futility.

Unite as Sons of the Living God
God told Hosea to take an adulterous wife because the land departed from the Lord. He married Gomer and she bore Jezreel (end kingdom of Israel), Lo-Ruhamah (not love Israel) and Lo-Ammi (not My people). Israel and Judah would be reunited as the sons of the living God with one leader (Hosea 1:1-11). Unite as sons of the living God.

Speak Tenderly to Restore Righteousness, Love and Intimacy with God
Rebuke Israel since she was not God's wife because of adultery and unfaithfulness. He made her like a desert, killed her with thirst and did not show His love to her children conceived in disgrace. God blocked her path with thornbushes and could not find her lovers that provided food, water and oil. She did not acknowledge that God gave her grain, new wine and oil along with gold and silver used for Baal. He exposed her lewdness before her lovers  and stopped all her appointed feasts. He ruined her vines and fig trees to pay for her lovers. God allured, led and spoke tenderly to her in the desert. He gave back her vineyards as a door of hope where she would call Him, 'my husband.' He removed the names of the Baals from her lips so they could lie down in safety with the animals. He betrothed them in righteousness, justice, love, compassion and faithfulness to acknowledge the Lord. God planted them in the land to say, 'You are my God.' (Hosea 2:1-23). Speak tenderly to restore righteousness, love and faithfulness for an intimate relationship with God in the body of Christ.

Love God's People Sacrificially So They Seek Redemption in Christ's Blood
The Lord told Hosea to love his adulterous wife like God loved the Israelites who turned to other gods. He bought her for 15 shekels of silver and ten bushels of barley to live purely with him to signify Israel without king, sacrifice, sacred stones, ephod or idol. Later the Israelites sought the Lord and David their king. They would come trembling to the Lord and His blessings in the last days (Hosea 3:1-5). Love God's people sacrificially so they seek redemption in Christ's blood.

Follow God's Word to Gain Knowledge, Understanding and Glory from Him
God said Israel had no faithfulness, no love and no acknowledgment of Him in the land. With cursing, lying, murder, stealing and adultery, the land mourned, people wasted away and were destroyed from lack of knowledge. By rejecting it, God rejected them as His priests. By ignoring God's law, He ignored their children. By sinning, priests exchanged their Glory for something disgraceful. Prostitution, idolatry, adultery, drinking and deserting God removed understanding, led them astray and caused ruin. Rulers loved shameful ways (Hosea 4:1-19). Follow God's word to gain knowledge, understanding and glory from Him.

Admit Guilt and Seek God for Revival
God disciplined the rebels from corrupt deeds that turned them away from Him. A spirit of  prostitution was in their heart by not acknowledging the Lord. Arrogance prevented them from finding God. Ephraim was oppressed, judged and pursued idols. She turned to Assyria for help but was unable to heal her sores. God was like a lion tearing Ephraim and Judah to pieces. In misery, they admitted their guilt and earnestly sought His face. By returning to God, He healed, bound up their wounds, revived them after two days and restored so they could live in His presence. God appeared like the spring rains that water the earth when they sought to know Him.  He desired mercy, not sacrifice and acknowledgment of God, instead of burnt offerings. They broke the covenant in unfaithfulness, murder and prostitution. A harvest was appointed when He restored the fortunes of His people (Hosea 5:1-6:11).
Admit guilt and earnestly seek God for revival, restoration, mercy and intimacy.

Expose Your Sin So You Cry Out to God for Healing
Before healing could take place, sins of deceit, lying, adultery, drinking, mocking anger and prayerlessness must be exposed and revealed. Ephraim mixing with the nations sapped his strength without realizing it. Israel's arrogance prevented him from returning to the Lord. Ephraim was easily deceived while turning to Egypt and Assyria before being destroyed. They spoke lies against God and did not cry out to Him from their hearts. He trained and strengthened them but they plotted evil against God. Their leaders fell by the sword because of insolent words (Hosea 7:1-16). Expose your sin so you cry out to God for healing, training and strengthening.

Seek God's Approval for Your Actions to Prevent Futility
Israel rejected what was good. They set up kings and chose princes without God's approval. They made idols for themselves from silver and gold to their own destruction. They sowed the wind and reaped the whirlwind. Ephraim's sin offerings became altars for sinning. They regarded the law as something alien. Because the Lord was not pleased with their sacrifices, He punished their sins. Israel forgot his Maker and God sent fire to consume their fortresses (Hosea 8:1-14). Seek God's approval for your actions to prevent futility.

When Christ is your leader, you will:
1. Unite as sons of the living God
2. Speak tenderly to restore intimacy with God

3. Love His people sacrificially to seek redemption
4. Follow God's word to gain knowledge and understanding
5. Admit guilt and seek Him for revival
6. Expose your sin so you cry to Him for healing
7. Seek God's approval for your actions
