Joe wonders if anyone cares. He picks up his phone and posts on social media. He and his girlfriend Julie, argue constantly. He notices her preoccupation with appearance. Julie feels insecure in her demanding job. Joe faces constant boredom with his.

Boomer Sam calls his wife to tell her about another late-night meeting with an employee. He feels guilty about a growing distance with his wife and children. Nearing retirement, he wonders about finding something more meaningful than his job.

June’s last child left home. She wants to make a difference. A friend told her that college age girls at church want to be mentored by someone older.

Jim, a faithful elder, sees most young people bypassing the church. Older people with experience seems bored and apathetic in their relationship with Christ.

Our culture is feeling the result of a mentorless, fatherless generation with a growing chasm between generations. Luke had a similar passion when writing His gospel. He wanted to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children so the rebellious accept the wisdom of the godly (Luke 1:17).

1.  Be available
Zechariah, Elizabeth and Mary gained a greater understanding and an unmatched experience after they were able to see God work first-hand in turning people from darkness to the "way of peace”. We should make ourselves available to others by being living testimonies of His faith (Luke 1:1-4)

2. Turn your heart back to God
Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth were old and barren, but walked blamelessly in all God's commandments. Zechariah burned incense in the temple of the Lord. The couple’s prayers were answered and Elizabeth gave birth to a son named John. His future as a forerunner would turn back many of Israel's sons to the Lord (Luke 1:5-17).

3. Believe that God is real
The angel Gabriel said Zechariah' inability to speak would be the sign that he didn't fully believe his words. His actions were significant, but the intentions and beliefs behind his prayer needed to be the same. Despite his shortcomings, Elizabeth still became pregnant since God looked with favor by taking away disgrace among men (Luke 1:18-25).

4. Submit to God's word in impossible situations.
Gabriel said virgin Mary would conceive a son named Jesus, be the Son of the Most High and given the throne of His father David to reign over Jacob's house in an eternal kingdom. Mary believed in the ability of God to do the impossible. She accepted her fate in His hands and said, "Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; be it done to me according to your word" (Luke 1:26-38).

5. Be humble and praise God for His working
Mary said, "My soul exalts the Lord . . . for He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; . . . for the Mighty One has done great things for me; . . . He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart. . . . And exalted those who were humble. . . . " (Luke 1:39-55).

6.  Be a living example of God's work
Elizabeth gave birth and the word got out that the Lord displayed His great mercy toward her. God opened her husband's mouth and he spoke praise of God. Those living around them were in awe at God’s blessings on them and their child. (Lk 1:56-66).

7. Verbally share God's word as a testimony of His work
Being filled with the Holy Spirit, Zechariah proclaimed that God had visited them, accomplished redemption for His people, and shone upon those who sit in darkness and shadow of death by guiding their feet into the way of peace. Zachariah was a testament to the workings of faith (Lk 1:67-80).

Action Steps:
1.   I will engage in God's rescue work by being available, by turning my heart to Him, by responding to signs choosing to believe that God is real.
2.   I will submit to His word in impossible situations, be humble and praise Him for His working, be a living example and verbally share His word as a testimony of His work.

Equip Spiritually Healthy People to Disciple the Needy (Insights in Prophets)

In order to equip spiritually healthy people to disciple the needy, grow nations with inter-generational mentoring by encouraging families to mourn over sin that motivates prayer, transform young people into spiritual jewels who attract others through family and friend accountability for character development, and develop  model cities so other nations seek God as king over every area of life.

Develop Model Cities So Other Nations Seek God
God told Zechariah He was jealous and dwelt in Jerusalem, called the City of Truth and Holy Mountain. Both old and young people sat in the streets enjoying themselves. God would bring people from various nations to live, build the temple in Jerusalem and be a blessing as they experienced fruitfulness. Instead of fear, they loved truth and experienced peace with one another and in the courts. The inhabitants of many cities came to Jerusalem to seek God. Ten men from all languages and nations would say to one Jew, "Let us go with you, because we have heard that God is with you" (Zech. 8:1-23). Develop model cities so other nations seek God and His truth.

Transform Young People Into Spiritual Jewels Who Attract Others
The word of the Lord was against Hadrach and His eye was on all mankind. He would remove Tyre's possessions and destroy her power on the seas causing surrounding nations to fear. Foreigners occupied Ashdod and God destroyed the Philistines' pride. Those left became Judah's leaders and He defended His house against enemy oppression. Zechariah prophesied that Jesus would come on a donkey bringing righteousness and salvation. God destroyed Ephraim's chariots and Jerusalem's war-horses. He proclaimed peace, extended His rule and freed prisoners across the world.
God saved them as His flock to sparkle like jewels in a crown, being attractive and beautiful. Grain and new wine made young men and women thrive, respectively (Zech. 9:1-17). Transform young people into thriving spiritual jewels attracting others as you proclaim Christ.

Grow Nations with Inter-Generational Mentoring
Zechariah said to ask God for rain in springtime to grow plants. Idols spoke deceit and diviners told false dreams that gave vain comfort. People wandered like sheep and were oppressed without a shepherd. God's anger burned against the shepherds. He cared for Judah to make them like a proud horse in battle. Judah brought the cornerstone, tent peg, battle bow and every ruler to be like mighty men trampling the muddy streets in battle. God strengthened, saved and restored Judah with compassion. The Ephraimites became like mighty men with glad hearts influencing their children to rejoice in God. He strengthened them in the Lord to walk in His name (Zech. 10:1-12). Grow nations in Christ with inter-generational mentoring.

Equip Spiritually Healthy People to Disciple the Needy
Zechariah said to hear the shepherds wailing because the lack of spiritually mature people led to the destruction of rich pastures. He handed them over to his neighbor and king who pastured the flock marked for slaughter hoping to become rich. He shepherded the oppressed of the flock with two staffs called Favor and Union. In one month he got rid of three shepherds. He broke the staff called Favor revoking the covenant made with the nations. The afflicted of the flock paid him 30 pieces of silver and he threw it into the house of the Lord to the potter. He then broke his second staff called Union breaking the brotherhood between Judah and Israel. The took again the foolish shepherd's equipment who did not care for the lost, seek the young, heal the injured or feed the healthy but ate the choice sheep. He pronounced woe to render the worthless shepherd powerless because he deserted the flock (Zech. 11:1-17). Equip spiritually healthy people to disciple the needy with compassion and unity.

Encourage Families Mourning Over Sin to Motivate Prayer
God was going to make Jerusalem an immovable rock before all nations. He would make Judah's leaders like a firepot in a woodpile and flaming torch among sheaves to destroy all nations that attacked them. God poured out on the house of David and Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They would look, mourn and grieve bitterly over the one they pierced. Great weeping in Jerusalem occurred clan by clan with their wives (Zech. 12:1-14). Encourage families to mourn their sin so God can pour out grace and intercession.

Design Family and Friend Accountability for Character Development
On that day, a fountain was opened to the house of David and Jerusalem that cleansed them from sin and banished idols from the land. God removed the prophets and spirit of impurity from the land with accountability to parents. Every false prophet admitted he deceived others and received wounds from his friends. God purified the one-third left as a remnant through fire. He refined them like silver and tested them like gold. They called on His name and He answered them as His people (Zech. 13:1-9). Design family and friend accountability for character development.

Worship God as King Over Every Area of Life for Fruitfulness
Plunder was divided in the day of the Lord. Nations fought and captured Jerusalem with half going into exile and the rest remaining. The Lord fought against those nations and His feet stood on the Mount of Olives splitting it in two from east to west, forming a great valley. They would flee without daytime or nighttime. Living water would flow out from Jerusalem, half to the eastern sea and half to the western sea in summer and winter. The Lord would be king over the whole earth. Jerusalem would be inhabited, never again destroyed. The nations who fought against Jerusalem would have their flesh, eyes and tongue rot. They had great panic and attacked each other. The nations collected their wealth, worshiped the King yearly in Jerusalem and celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles to prevent the plague of no rain. Every person and article would be holy to the Lord (Zech. 14:1-21). Worship God as king over every area of life for fruitfulness.

In order to equip spiritually healthy people to disciple the needy, do the following:
1. Grow nations in Christ with inter-generational mentoring
2. Encourage families to mourn over sin that motivates prayer
3. Transform young people into spiritual jewels who attract others
4. Design family and friend accountability for character development
5. Develop  model cities so other nations seek God and His truth
6. Worship God as king over every area of life

Follow God's Plan for Effective Disciplemaking (Insights in Prophets)

Churches and ministries often  emphasize one aspect of disciplemaking, but blessing is minimized because they don't follow God's blueprint completely. Some examples of imbalance in disciplemaking include:
1. Personal glory and pride instead of releasing control and humility
2. Pastor or teacher gift apart from the offices of apostle, prophet and evangelist
3. Teaching without mentoring
4. Mentoring without teaching
5. Hoarding resources on infrastructure in church programs apart from discipling people
6.  One-on-one disciplemaking apart from exercise of all the spiritual gifts in the body of Christ
7. Trusting self instead of God

Jehu wrote a letter for the rulers and guardians of Ahab's 70 sons to meet him in Jezreel where they were killed, which fulfilled God's word through Elijah. Jehu also killed the relatives of Ahaziah king of Ahaziah according to the word of the Lord. Jehu cunningly called for a solemn assembly and all the worshipers of Baal were killed. The guard and royal officers burned the sacred pillars of Baal and dismantled the house of Baal. Jehu eradicated Baal out of Israel, but was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord with all his heart.  He left the golden calves at Bethel and Dan that made Israel sin (2 Kings 10:1-36). Fight idolatry by rejecting personal glory, pride and partial obedience.

When Athaliah, mother of Ahaziah, saw her son dead, she destroyed the royal offspring, except Joash who was hid from her. Six years later Joash was crowned king, given God's word and officers killed Athaliah. Jehoiada the priest made a covenant between the Lord, king and people that they should be the Lord's people. The people tore down the house of Baal and  his altars. They broke his images in pieces thoroughly. They killed Mattan the priest of Baal and appointed offices over the house of the Lord (2 Kings 11:1-21). The offices of apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor and teacher equip people to embrace a biblical worldview in a covenant relationship with God as a guard against worldliness.

Joash (Jehoash) did right in God's eyes all his days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him. The high places were not taken away and the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places (2 Kings 12:1-3).
Teaching and mentoring equip people to follow God so they are not carried by every wind of doctrine through trickery and deceitful scheming.

Priests were supposed to use money donated to repair the breaches of the house of the Lord. When King Jehoash discovered the unrepaired breeches, the priests agreed not to take any more money (2 Kings 12:4-8). Hoarding resources on infrastructure stifles disciplemaking ministry.

Jehoiada the priest collected money to pay carpenters, builders, masons, stonecutters and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the breeches to the house of the Lord. They did not require an accounting but dealt faithfully in the work (2 Kings 12:9-16). The body of Christ works properly as each individual part speaks the truth in love.

Jehoash took his own and Jehoshaphat's sacred things he dedicated along with gold from the house of God and the king's house to be sent to Hazael king of Aram so he would leave Jerusalem. Jehoash's servants conspired and killed him (2 Kings 12:17-21). Trusting self instead of God leads to ruin.

Consider the following questions:
1. Are seeking numbers or recognition from a ministry or denomination instead of releasing control through humility so God gets the glory?
2. Do you have apostles, prophets and evangelists operating alongside pastors and teachers to establish a proper foundation for the faith?
3. Do you have teaching without mentoring, which lessens the application of God's word?
4. Do you have mentoring without teaching, which lessens the adoption of biblical worldview?
5. Do you hoard resources on infrastructure in church programs instead of discipling people, which leads to ineffectiveness as a witness to the world?
6. Do you have one-on-one discipleship apart from releasing all the spiritual gifts in the body of Christ, which leads to imbalance?
7. Are you trusting self instead of God, which leads to ruin?
