Seek Genuine Relationships with the Poor (Insights in Psalms)

"Not until we have become humble and teachable, standing in awe of God's holiness and sovereignty... acknowledging our own littleness, distrusting our own thoughts, and willing to have our minds turned upside down, can divine wisdom become ours" (J. I. Packer).
The wise nourish others with their speech and seek genuine relationships with the poor. To do this, we need God's perspective.

The words of a person with sound wisdom and understanding speech bring nourishment like deep waters and a bubbling brook. Dishonor and reproach lead a person to separate himself, reveal his own mind, being partial to the wicked and rejecting righteous judgments. In contrast to nourishing words, his words bring strife, blows, ruin and ensnare others through gossip (Prov. 18:1-8). The wise nourish others through their words, but the wicked ruins others through gossip and revealing their own mind.

The lazy or prideful person reaps destruction, thinking that his wealth is security. The righteous or humble person reaps honor and runs to safety in God. He listens before he answers and acquires knowledge by considering both sides of an argument.  He opens doors to great men through gifts. Knowing that death and life are in the power of the tongue, he speaks carefully without offense (Prov. 18:9-21). The wise speak carefully and find their security in God instead of wealth.

The righteous or humble person finds favor from the Lord through his wife. He prays fervently because His closest friend is the Lord (Prov. 18:22-24). The humble develops strong relationships with God and his or her spouse.

A person with integrity refuses perverse speech. Their insight and wisdom prevent sin. A fool rages against the Lord and his wealth only brings superficial friendships. Lies lead to certain punishment. A generous man has many friends, but people avoid and hate the poor (Prov. 19:1-7). A generous man with integrity seeks genuine relationships with the poor.

A wise person loves his soul and finds good. False witnesses and liars receive punishment and perish as a result. Luxury and ruling over princes are not fitting for fools. Discretion makes people slow to anger as they  overlook a transgression (Prov. 19:8-11). A wise person loves his soul by finding good, being slow to anger and overlooking a transgression.

The king's wrath is like the roaring of a lion but favor like dew on the grass. A foolish son is destruction to his father, but house and wealth are inheritance from fathers. Contentions of a wife are a constant dripping, but a prudent wife is from the Lord (Prov. 19:12-14). Blessings from God include a prudent wife, inheritance from fathers and favor of a king.

Idleness creates deep sleep, hunger and even death because of carelessness. He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul. By being gracious to the poor, you lend to the Lord who repays any good deed. Discipline your son and don't desire his death. You have to rescue an angry man repeatedly. Wisdom comes as you listen to counsel and accept discipline. Man plans his way, but God's counsel stands. Kindness is desirable and the fear of the Lord leads to life so you are untouched by evil (Prov. 19:15-23). Listen to counsel, keep the commandment and be kind so you can live without evil.

The sluggard buries his hand in the dish without bringing it back to his mouth. Strike a scoffer and the naive become shrewd. Reprove someone with understanding and he will discern knowledge. You stray from knowledge by not listening to discipline. Rods are prepared for scoffers and blows for backs of fools (Prov. 19:24-29). Reprove those with understanding so they can discern knowledge, but strike scoffers.

Have you rejected the world's perspectives on wealth?
Are you seeking to nourish others through your words?
Are you seeking genuine relationships with the poor to increase their opportunities for advancement?
Do you listen to counsel to gain more understanding?
Do you reprove others so they can gain discernment?

Righteous Speech Produces Blessings (Insights in Psalms)

Seven Modern Sins:
1.  Politics without principles
2.  Pleasures without conscience
3.  Wealth without work
4.  Knowledge without character
5.  Industry without morality
6.  Science without humanity
7.  Worship without sacrifice (Canon Frederic Donaldson). Proverbs 17 explains how righteous speech produces blessings in all areas of life.

Righteousness Produces Holistic Riches
Righteous character and wisdom trumps riches and strife because they produce quietness, vocational responsibilities and financial provision  (Prov. 17:1-3). Righteous character produces personal, vocational and financial blessings.

Wickedness Produces Perverse Speech
Wicked character and speech has the following characteristics:
1.  Listens to wicked lips and falsehood
2.  Mocks the poor
3.  Rejoices at calamity
4.  Lying speech
5.  Takes bribes
6.  Repeats a matter to hurt friendships
7.  Returns evil for good
8.  Justifies the wicked and condemns the righteous
9.  No sense
10. Co-signs loans
11.  Loves transgression and strife
12. Perverts language and crooked mind
13. Perverts way of justice (Prov. 17:4-5,7-9,13,15-16,18-20,23). The wicked lies, loves transgression and perverts language.

Righteousness Produces Family Riches
Grandchildren are the crown of old men. The glory of sons is their fathers. In contrast, the father of a fool has grief and no joy. The mother of a fool has bitterness (Prov. 17:21,25). Fathers are the glory of sons while grandchildren are the crown of old men.

Righteousness Produces Measured Speech

Righteous character and speech have the following characteristics:
1.  Covers a transgression seeks love
2.  Rebukes understanding man
3.  Abandons a quarrel before it breaks out
4.  Friend loves at all time
5.  Brother is born for adversity
6.  Joyful heart is good medicine
7.  Wisdom
8.  Understanding
9.  Restrains words have knowledge
10. Cool spirit has understanding
11. Closes lips is prudent (Prov. 17:9-10,14,17,22,24,27-28). The righteous covers a transgression, abandons a quarrel and restrains words.

Examine your character:
1. Do you watch what you say?
2. Do you cover a transgression, abandon a quarrel and restrain your words?
3. Do you prioritize your job as a father or grandfather, mother or grandmother?
4. Do you see God's blessings in your personal, vocation and financial life?

The heart of an individual controls the character of their speech. A wise person will have speech that edifies others. A foolish person will have speech that tears down others. The control of the tongue is greatest mark of spiritual maturity.

2.   Spouts folly
3.   Perverse tongue crushes the spirit

5.   Hot-tempered man stirs up strife
6.   Mouth of wicked pours out evil things
(Prov. 15:1-2,4,7,18,23,26b,28)
Wise speech makes knowledge acceptable, heals, pure, thoughtful and timely while foolish speech is harsh, spouts folly, crushes the spirit, stirs up strife and pours out evil things.

God sees evil and good, including the hearts of men (Prov. 15:3,11).

5.   Joyful heart makes a cheerful face
6.   Seeks knowledge
7.   Cheerful heart has continual feast
8.   Better is little with fear of the Lord
9.   Better is love with dish of vegetables
10. Path of upright is highway

19. Good news puts fat on the bones
20. Ear listening to life-giving reproof dwells among wise
21. Listens to reproof acquires understanding
22.  Fear of Lord is instruction for wisdom

The humble who listen to reproof acquire honor and understanding. God loves and hears the righteous who pray and pursue righteousness.

Heart of a foolish person:
1.   Rejects father's discipline
2.   Trouble in income of wicked
3.   Evil plans are abomination to the Lord
4.   Stern discipline for those forsaking the way
5.   Hates reproof will die
6.   Scoffer does not love one who reproves him and won't go to the wise
7.   Sad heart makes a broken spirit
8.   Feeds on folly
9.   Everyday of the afflicted are bad
10. Turmoil with great treasure
11. Hatred with fattened ox
12. Way of sluggard is hedge of thorns
13. Despises his mother
14. Folly delights a man who lacks judgment
15. Plans fail for lack of counsel
16. Tear down house of proud

17. Profits illicitly troubles his own house
18. Lord is far from wicked
19. Neglects discipline despises himself (Prov. 15:5-33)
Those who neglect discipline and hate reproof despise themselves and die. The Lord is far from the wicked and tears down the house of the proud.

Does your speech make knowledge acceptable?
Does your speech heal?
Is your speech pure?
Is your speech thoughtful?
Is your speech timely?
Do listen to reproof?
Are you righteous so God can hear your prayers?
Do you pursue righteousness?
Do you have many counselors?
Are you humble?
Do you fear the Lord?

Defeating Critical Speech Coming Against You (Insights in Psalms)

2/8/2011

Picture
Words can hurt. Unkind remarks cut like a sword. It's easy to lose confidence when people make you look bad. Guilt causes you to question whether your actions made people respond in hurtful ways towards you. God doesn't leave you defenseless, but always available to help.

Description of Enemies

Leaders or judges on earth with unrighteous hearts perform acts of oppression, cruelty and violence. They speak lies from birth like venom from a serpent. Some people look for the worst in others. Because they don't feel good about themselves, they put others down. I once had a boss who criticized everything. Nothing I did was right (Ps. 58:1–5).

Call for Help
Ask God to destroy the fangs of critical speech since it  devours like young lions. Praying causes it to flow away like water while cutting off the arrows before they're shot at you. The constant negative speech will melt and be swept away with a whirlwind (Ps. 58:6–9).

Fruit of Righteous
When God punishes and take vengeance upon the wicked, the righteous rejoice. People observe that God rewards the righteous and judges the earth (Ps. 58:10–11).

Prayer for God's Deliverance
Ask God for deliverance from enemies who do iniquity, shed blood and set ambushes against you. A safe and high place away from harm is especially needed in those times. When my boss was criticizing me, it was easy to feel guilt. The battle seemed very fierce. God laughs at them. They don't feel anyone's listening (Ps. 59:1–8).

Demonstration of God's Reign
Watch for God's lovingkindness because He is your stronghold. You can be confident because of His triumph. Exposing curses and lies because of pride helps God's people understand His power. Destroying destructive schemes and critical speech show everyone in a tangible way that God rules and reigns over the world (Ps. 59:9–15).

Response of God's People
God's people joyfully sing and praise Him for His strength and lovingkindness because He is a stronghold and refuge in tough times (Ps. 59:16–17).

Ask God to defeat critical speech coming against you. Trust in God's triumph and praise Him for His strength and lovingkindness.

Responding to Hurtful Words (Insights in Psalms)

1/28/2011

Picture
Evil speech destroys like a fire (James 3:5-6). It causes you to be distracted, disturbed and distraught. I lost confidence when a boss constantly criticized my work. When trusted friends stabbed me behind my back, I felt my whole world crashing in on me. In these hurtful times, you need an anchor. Psalm 55 details these varied feelings when facing harm from enemies and how to respond.

Overview
Prayer is always the first lifeline when you feel restless and overwhelmed. When facing trouble, pressure and grudges, complaining becomes the natural response  (Ps. 55:1-3).

Feelings Within
Your heart is in anguish. Terror of death falls upon you. Fear and trembling saps your strength. You don't know where to turn. You think only of escaping these circumstances. Wouldn't it be great to fly away like a bird to safety in the wilderness (Ps. 55:4-8).

Trouble Identified
The World War II saying that "loose lips sink ships" describe one's enemies. One's tongue destroys, oppresses and deceives others. It causes strife and violence in cities. At the very center of iniquity and mischief is evil speech from unexpected sources, your trusted friends, which cause even greater hurt (Ps. 55:9-15).

Appropriate Response
When you face evil, call and complain to the Lord because He hears. God delivers and allows you to know peace in the midst of the battle. God destroys and overturns flattering lips that sound good and comforting, but inwardly deceitful.  Trust God by casting your burden upon the Lord since He will sustain you. Take heart and pray because He never allows the righteous to be shaken even though people stab you in the back (Ps. 55:16-23).

Write down your burdens (people saying unkind things or lies about you, injustice you are facing, etc.). Place the paper in a backpack and put it on. Take it off symbolizing that you are casting your burden upon the Lord.
