Contend Earnestly for the Faith (Insights in NT)

6/7/2013

Picture
Those who contend earnestly for the faith do not turn God's grace into license of immorality, submit to God's authority, wary of people serving themselves and seeking personal advantage, remember that scoffers cause divisions, build their holy faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, and minister to doubters, deceived and corrupted for His glory.

Contend Earnestly for the Faith

Jude urged them to contend for the faith entrusted to believers because certain condemned and godless men secretly slipped in among them. They changed God's grace into a license for immorality and denied Jesus Christ as Sovereign and Lord. He reminded them that the Lord delivered His people out of Egypt and destroyed those who did not believe. He bound angels in eternal chains for judgment who abandoned their positions of authority. Sodom and Gomorrah served as an example of suffering eternal fire because of sexual immorality and perversion (Jude 1-7). Contend earnestly for the faith and do not turn God's grace into license for immorality.

Submit to God's Authority Rejecting Deadness, Profiteering and Covetousness
Dreamers polluted their bodies, rejected authority and slandered heavenly beings. The archangel Michael said, "The Lord rebuke you," when he disputed with the devil about Moses' body. Like unreasoning animals, these things destroyed men who spoke abusively against whatever they did not understand. They took the way of Cain, rushed for profit into Balaam's error and destroyed in Korah's rebellion (Jude 8-11). Submit to God's authority rejecting dead religion, profiteering and covetousness.

Wary of People Serving Themselves and Constantly Busy
As blemishes in their love feasts, they were shepherds who fed themselves, clouds without rain blown along by the wind, and twice-dead, uprooted autumn trees without fruit. They were wild waves of the sea foaming up their shame and  wandering stars for whom the blackest darkness had been reserved forever (Jude 12-13). Beware of people serving themselves who seek fads, constantly busy and spiritually dead on their way to hell.

Know God Judges Those Seeking Personal Advantage
Enoch prophesied that the Lord was coming with thousands of His holy ones to judge and convict all ungodly acts and harsh words ungodly sinners spoke against Him. There men were grumblers and faultfinders who followed their evil desires. They boasted about themselves and flattered others for their own advantage (Jude 14-16). Know God judges grumbling, faultfinding, boasting and flattery seeking personal advantage.

Remember Scoffers Cause Divisions
Remember that the apostles foretold scoffers who followed their own ungodly desires in the last days. They divided them by following their natural instincts without the Spirit (Jude 17-19). Remember scoffers who follow their instincts without the Holy Spirit cause divisions.

Build Your Holy Faith and Pray in Holy Spirit
They should build themselves in their most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. They kept themselves in God's love and waited for the mercy of their Lord Jesus Christ bringing eternal life (Jude 20-21). Build your holy faith, pray in the Holy Spirit and stay in God's love waiting for Christ's mercy to eternal life.

Minister to Doubters, Deceived and Corrupted
They showed mercy to the doubting, snatched and saved others from the fire, and showed mercy mixed with fear hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh. God kept them from falling and presented them before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy for His glory, majesty, power and authority through Jesus Christ their Lord (Jude 22-25). Minister appropriately to doubters, deceived and corrupted for God's glory.

Answer the following questions to determine if you are contending earnestly for the faith:

1. Are you studying God's word so you don't turn His grace into license for immorality?
2. Do you submit to God's authority rejecting dead religion, profiteering land covetousness?
3. Do you serve others and busy in God's kingdom program?
4. Do you avoid grumbling and faultfinding that seek personal advantage?
5. Do you pursue unity working the power of the Holy Spirit?
6. Are you building your holy faith by meditating in God's word, praying in the Holy Spirit and staying in God's love?
7. Are you ministering appropriately to doubters, deceived and corrupted people?

Understanding God's Power Impacts Everything (Insights in Psalms)

"When God comes down, He removes the immovable difficulties. When God comes down, the impossible becomes reality. God moves on behalf of the one who waits." Understanding God's power affects how you view and respond to need in peoples' lives. It affects your character and ability to see God answer prayer.

Eliphaz asked if a man could benefit God by being righteous. Job's sins were great as he was accused of withholding food from the hungry, sending widows away empty-handed and breaking the strength of the fatherless. This caused snares, sudden peril and water to cover Job. He fooled himself by thinking God could not see. Evil men asked God to leave them alone even though He filled their houses with good things (Job 22:1-18). Help the defenseless in their need will prove you know God.

Submit to God and be at peace with Him so prosperity can come. Lay up His words in your heart so the Almighty becomes your gold. In this way, you will be restored, find delight in God and He will hear your prayers. What you decide will be done so light can shine on your ways. God saved the downcast when men said, "Lift them up." You would be delivered by purity (Job 22:19-30). Submit to God by laying up His words in your heart to find favor and answered prayer.

Job's complained bitterly since he did not know where to find God. He stated his case to find how God would answer. Hopefully Job would be delivered from his judge. He caught no glimpse of God wherever he went. When He tested Job, he came forth as gold. He followed God's steps and did not depart from His commands. He treasured His words more than daily bread. God does what He pleases, which terrified Job (Job 23:1-17). Treasure God's word and follow in His steps for proven character.

God did not set times to judge men for evil deeds toward others. The poor gleaned in the vineyards of the wicked with nothing to cover themselves. The groans of the dying rose from the city and wounded souls cried for help. God charged no one with wrongdoing. People rebelled against the light through murder, stealing, adultery and robbery that cursed the land. God dragged the mighty so they had no assurance of life. Their exaltation was temporary and then cut off like heads of grain (Job 24:1-25). Refuse to rebel against God so you can hear the groans of the spiritual dying and the cry for help from wounded souls.

Bildad said dominion and awe belonged to God with no one righteous before Him. Job replied sarcastically how he helped the powerless and offered advice to one without wisdom. God suspended the earth over nothing and clouds do not burst under the weight of water. His power churned up the sea, His hand pierced the gliding serpent. No one  understood His power (Job 25:1-26:14).  Stand in awe of God's power who suspends the earth over nothing.

Job maintained his integrity with a clear conscience. God did not listen to the cry of the godless. Job taught people the power of God and His ways instead of meaningless talk. The wicked offspring never had enough to eat with the plague killing those coming later. He laid up riches for the righteous. Terrors overtook him like a flood (Job 27:1-23). Teach people the power of God while maintaining your integrity.

Ask yourself the following questions:
1. Do you help the defenseless in their need?
2. Do you lay up God's words in your heart to find favor and answered prayer?
3. Do you treasure God's word and follow in His steps for proven character?
4. Do you refuse to rebel against God so you hear the groans of the spiritual dying and the cry for help from wounded souls?
5. Do you stand in awe of God's power?
6. Do you teach people the power of God while maintaining your integrity?

Finding Deliverance in Extreme Pain (Insight in Psalms)

1/28/2012

People try various strategies in dealing with their extreme pain. These include over-eating, smoking, alcohol, drugs, sex, busyness, television, social media, and accomplishments. Israel experienced severe pain when Babylon conquered and removed them from Jerusalem, the place where God dwelt. God shared an alternative strategy in dealing with extreme pain.

We wept by the rivers of Babylon when we remembered Zion. Our captors and tormentors demanded we sing songs of Zion.
May my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth if I don't exalt Jerusalem about my chief joy. How blessed will be the one who repays Babylon for their destruction of Jerusalem (Ps. 137:1-9). Exalt God in your extreme pain.

I give thanks heartily for His love and truth since God has magnified His word together with His name. He answers prayer and makes me bold with strength in my soul (Ps. 138:1-3). Claim God's promises in prayer to have strength and boldness.

Every king gives thanks and sings of the Lord's ways when they hear His words. The Lord's glory is great and He regards the lowly. He revives and saves me from the wrath of my enemies. The Lord accomplishes what concerns me. Because His lovingkindness is eternal, He won't forsake me (Ps. 138:4-8). Humble yourself so God's purposes can be accomplished in your life and the world.

God knows everything about you, even before doing something. He is present everywhere in the universe. He leads and works on my behalf in both darkness and light  (Ps. 139:1-12). Submit to God's leadership because He knows you and is present everywhere.

God weaves me in my mother's womb. I give thanks because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I was made skillfully and secretly in the depths of the earth. God ordained the number of days I will live. How precious and vast are God'sare  (Ps. 139:13-18). Thank God for His design, sovereignty and thoughts in and for your life.

Ask Him to slay the wicked who speak against God. I hate and loathe those who hate Him (Ps. 139:19-22). Agree with God in hating sin and wickedness.

Ask Him to search and know your heart. God will examine your anxious thoughts and way of pain so He can lead you forever (Ps. 139:23-24). Let God search and know your heart so He can lead you always.

When you are experiencing pain, follow this checklist:
1. Exalt God in your extreme pain
2. Claim God's promises in prayer to have strength and boldness
3. Humble yourself so God's purposes can be accomplished your life and world

4. Submit to God's leadership because He knows you and is present everywhere
5. Thank God for His design, sovereignty and thoughts in and for your life
6. Agree with God in hating sin and wickedness
7. Let God search and know your heart so He can lead you always

Key to Well-Being (Insights in Psalms)

8/3/2011

Picture
You discovered the key to happiness as moment-by-moment trust, security, protection and satisfaction in God (Ps. 91). Martin Seligman, one of the founders of positive psychology, has written in his new book, Flourish, that the goal of well-being has five elements:
  • Positive emotion (of which happiness and life satisfaction are all aspects)
  • Engagement
  • Relationships
  • Meaning
  • Achievement
Seligman defines what it means to “flourish” by asking what it is that enables you to cultivate your talents, build deep, lasting relationships with others, feel pleasure, and contribute meaningfully to the world. However, God defines well-being and flourishing as praise of, submit to and trust in God's attributes (Ps. 92-94).

Praise God's Love, Faithfulness and Purpose
It's good to thank and sing praises with instruments to the Most High God because of His lovingkindness and faithfulness (Ps. 92:1-4). Sing praise to God's attributes of love and faithfulness.

His great works make me glad. His purposes are deep and misunderstood by stupid men. God ultimately destroys the wicked and scatters our enemies (Ps. 92:5-9). Be glad in God's works and deep purposes.

His fresh oil exalts me over my foes. I flourish like the palm tree in the courts of my God. Righteous men still thrive in old age. They declare that the Lord is upright as their rock (Ps. 92:10-15). You thrive and are exalted when God becomes your rock.

Submit to God's Reign, Strength and Holiness
The Lord reigns and is clothed with majesty and strength. The world and His throne are firmly established eternally (Ps. 93:1-2). The Lord reigns eternally with majesty and strength.

The floods exalt God so people understand He is mighty and holy (Ps. 93:3-5). Creation exalts the mighty and holy God.

Trust in God's Judgment, Advocacy and Peace
God judges the earth and pays back the proud who boast, speak arrogantly and afflict His people. They kill widows, immigrants and orphans thinking that God doesn't see (Ps. 94:1-7). God judges the proud who afflict marginalized people.

God hears, sees, chastens and rebukes wickedness. He teaches humankind knowledge since He knows their their thoughts (Ps. 94:8-11). God sees and rebukes wickedness.

Blessed are those He corrects and teaches out of His law. God grants them relief from adversity. He won't abandon or forsake His people. Who will be my advocate against evildoers? (Ps. 94:12-16). God advocates, corrects and teaches His people so they can experience relief from adversity.

Ultimately, only the Lord's lovingkindness will help and hold me up. When anxious thoughts multiply within me, His consolations delight my soul. The Lord is my stronghold against evil plots. He is the rock of refuge and destroys evil (Ps. 94:17-23). God's love provides psychological relief from anxiety.

To experience sense of flourishing and well-being, do the following:
1.  Praise God's love, faithfulness and purpose
2. Submit to God's reign, strength and holiness
3. Trust in God's judgment, advocacy and peace

Are You or Christ King? (Insights in Psalms)

12/30/2010

People either hate or love God. He opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. The proud or self-willed person hates God and responds to life situations with fear because of losing control. The humble or submissive person loves God and responds to life situations with praise because He is King. Those with personal agendas see God as ugly and a cosmic killjoy. Those who conform to God's agenda see God as beautiful  and their guide through life. Psalm 46-48 set up the contrast between those who hate and love God.

Praise God Because He is a Refuge
Because God provides abundant help in tight places with full authority (Ps. 45), you don't have to fear. This changeable world is full of problems, but through the Holy Spirit dwelling in your heart, you have a place of refuge and strength (Ps. 46:1-5).

Even as the world falls apart and war moves across the earth,  God remains your stronghold. God is so powerful that He conquers armies and makes war cease (Ps. 46:6-9).

In response to God's mighty works, relax and exalt in Him  knowing He has full control (Ps. 46:10-11).

Praise God Because He is King
Since God is King over the earth and subdues people under your feet, you can be full of joy instead of fear. Because God reigns over the nations and sits on His holy throne, sing praise and lift up your mighty King (Ps. 47:1-9).

Praise God Because He is Beautiful
The city of Zion where God dwells is beautiful in elevation. People respond differently when they see or hear the great King. Some are joyful if they see Him as a stronghold. Others panic or experience anguish when their pet projects or activities are destroyed by Him (Ps. 48:1-7).

God's attributes--eternal, lovingkindness, righteousness and holiness--are beautiful and must be communicated to the next generation so He can guide them through their lives (Ps. 48:8-14).

Are you fearful because you feel that you have lost control? If so, realize that Christ is King, not you! Submit yourself to Him and praise God for His beautiful attributes. Let Christ guide you through life instead of relying on your human understanding.
