God is My Shepherd (insights in Psalms)

All of us experience times when we feel lost, discouraged or hopeless. I remember a time when a promising ministry opportunity was shot down in flames. This ministry accepted me as a full-time vocational worker, but the leadership changed their minds after I attended a planning retreat for staff. It felt like a parachute had been pulled away from me and I was descending in rapid free fall. Where do we go when friends scoff, doubts reign, hope fails and finances crash? There is a person who offers provision, protection, purpose and presence in times like these.

The Lord is personal. He is MY shepherd (Ps. 23:1). God provides our financial, physical, emotional or social needs. If you need finances, call upon Him. If you need a job, ask Him to provide open doors for a job interview. If emptiness, emotional hurt, fear or anxiety overtake you, ask your shepherd for peace. If you need a friend, ask God to provide since He sticks closer than a brother (Prov. 18:24). God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ (Phil. 4:19).

God not only provides, He protects. Security becomes important after He meets our physical, emotional and social needs. Our shepherd makes us lie down in green pastures and leads us to waters of rest (Ps. 23:2). He protects us from a multitude of spiritual enemies seeking to harm us. False teaching like prosperity gospel, business leadership methodology and celebrity hero worship lead us away from the protective canopy of God's Word. The fast pace of the world causes stress and distractions so our work or ministry takes precedence over our relationship with Christ and caring for our families. Remaining in green pastures and quiet waters slows us down so we can feed on the pure and unadulterated word of God (1 Pet. 2:1-2). Unfortunately, many believers learn God's word second-hand from teachers and don't spend sufficient time in God's word themselves.

Those who study and meditate on God's word will be refreshed spiritually by the Lord (Ps. 23:3). As a result, God will guide them into His purpose for their lives. He provides discernment to follow the right path whether it's a marriage, job, church, friends, hobbies, food, entertainment, etc.

After God provides for all our needs, protects us from spiritual enemies and reveals His purpose, we must live it out. We lack confidence and power as we face evil, darkness and chaos. God's presence empowers us to walk through the valley of death (Ps. 23:4-5). His rod and staff provide authority and support enabling us to experience His tender compassion so we can apply His word in every situation. God's promises are like a feast to change our perspectives so we can rejoice in the midst of trouble. Nothing compares to God's love for us because He is always faithful and unchanging in the various seasons of life (Ps. 23:6).

What aspect of God's shepherd nature (provision, protection, purpose and presence) is most precious to you and why?

God Reveals Our Part in His Kingdom Purposes (insights in Prophets)

A spiritual battle is raging all around us. My wife, Karen, and I do marriage intimacy work with couples. Many today are struggling. As a young person in my early 20s, my parents divorced after 27 years of marriage. Parents, siblings and friends experienced heartache, emotional trauma and identity crises that has affected them for their whole lives. At the same time, families and churches become God's building blocks to fulfill His kingdom purposes.

Sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, received by lot their inheritance from the Jordan at Jericho to Bethel in the place God designated (Josh. 16:1,4). Each person has a niche and sphere of influence determined by the sovereignty of God so He can rule in our cities. All of us working together fulfill His kingdom purposes.

Just as the Jebusites remained in Judah, the Canaanites living in Ephraim weren't driven out. In fact, they became forced laborers to the present day (Josh. 16:10). Incomplete obedience and disobedience in not carrying out all our kingdom responsibilities allow the world's philosophy to squeeze us into its mold. Instead of God's kingdom being the number one priority in our lives, we allow career, physical exercise, hobbies, entertainment and even our families take precedence. As a result, we experience stress and fatiguing labor, not the exhilaration of God's rest. His yoke is easy, pleasant and profitable (Matt. 11:28-30).

Manasseh, father of Gilead, was allotted Gilead and Bashan, because he was a man of war. Manasseh's sons received lots according to the male descendants (Josh. 17:1-2). Ten portions fell to Manasseh, besides land of Gilead and Bashan beyond Jordan, because of his request for the daughters to receive an inheritance. Manasseh could not take possession of these cities because the Canaanites continued living there. Even when Israel became strong and put Canaanites to forced labor, some remained (Josh. 17:5-6,12-13). Because most Christians don't understand they are in a spiritual battle against the kingdom of darkness, they pursue other activities besides God's kingdom purposes. The evil one targets families. If satan can't get us fighting one another, he will distract us with unprofitable activities without eternal significance. The bad outcomes include divorce, church splits and materialism.

Manasseh complained they only received one lot, but Joshua said they could take more territory by driving out the Canaanites despite their iron chariots (Josh. 17:14-18). God provides strength to defeat worldliness in our lives. Faithfulness to God determines the responsibilities entrusted to us because those faithful in a little will be faithful in much.

Once the whole congregation assembled at Shiloh and  set up the tent of meeting where God dwelt, the land was subdued before them. Joshua questioned how long it would take the other seven tribe to possess their land (Josh. 18:1-3). Christianity is not a spectator sport. Too many people sit in the pews, not engaged in God's kingdom purposes. God wants every congregation take some responsibility to reach certain people groups, cultural spheres and geographical locations. Like the church in Antioch, He will reveal our portion of the mission field through prayer as we listen to Him (Acts. 13:1-5).

Joshua commanded three men from each tribe to return a description after walking through the land. The remaining land would be divided into seven portions with lots cast. Benjamin received 14 cities, Simeon receiving a portion from Judah, Zebulun received 12 cities, Issaachar 16 cities, Asher 22 cities, Naphtali 19 cities and Dan fought and captured Leshum with the edge of the sword so they could possess and dwell there (Josh. 18:4-19:51). Not only through prayer, but God uses research of the mission field to reveal which portion He allots  to our congregation. Balancing needs with available gifting, financial and personnel resources  determines the mission niche for our congregation.

What sin or activity is hindering or distracting you from God's kingdom purposes? Through research and listening prayer, what is God saying to you?

God Graces Every Situation (insights in Law)

I experienced several lay-offs and a firing in my corporate career as an industrial engineer and purchasing agent. Each time, God provided a better position even though my job performance had flaws. God graciously met our needs through the various transitions even when we messed up. How do you sort out failed human responsibility or disobedience to God and His gracious dealings with us?

Because God is a loving and holy Supreme being, He makes good come out of every situation. We see these two sides

expressed in the life of Abram (Gen. 14). Even though God shows grace, we still experience consequences for disobedience.  Abraham disobeyed God by not separating from Lot in response to His command to leave his relatives and go to the land He would show him (Gen. 12:1).

Five kings controlling the area of Sodom where Lot lived were defeated by four kings. After they took Lot, a fugitive told Abram his nephew was taken captive where he would probably be killed. Abram led 318 of his trained men to rescue Lot and recover all his goods (Gen. 14:8-16). It was admirable that Abram rescued Lot. At the same time, Abram's disobedience concerning Lot caused him to risk his life, incur expenses and exert effort on his nephew's behalf. He experienced consequences because he didn't separate from his nephew, Lot, until later (Gen. 13:14).

Even in the midst of disobedience and a bad situation, God still shows grace. Out of nowhere, Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High, came to meet Abram with bread and wine after he rescued Lot.  He blessed Abram with God showing grace by delivering enemies into his hand (Gen. 14:18-20).  In the midst of the mess due to Abram's disobedience regarding Lot, God shared His promise to assure Abram that He is sovereign and victorious in every situation. God makes good come out of bad situations.

Abram showed proper response to God's grace by not taking advantage of it. He refused the tithe offered to him by Melchizedek. Abram showed contentment to have basic food expenses met without desiring riches (Gen. 14:21-24). The way we treat God's commands will be rendered in equal measure to us. Even though God shows grace in the midst of disobedience, we do reap consequences because of our sin.

How has God showed grace to you? How have you experienced the consequences of sin?

Our Most Prized Possession (insights in NT)

Each person has certain possessions or assets where they place great value. Our families form a special place in each of our hearts. A rare family heirloom will be greatly prized, especially if it has been passed down many generations. Can you imagine losing your house or job! Our culture places special worth on celebrities, movies, sports, entertainment and media. What do you most value?

Christ presented His prized commodity, the message of salvation demonstrated through compassion in Matt. 11-12,  to all people. Jesus taught in parables for the purpose of instructing those who desired to learn and concealed His message from those who wanted to argue and not understand (Matt. 13:10-14). Storytelling was a great way in overcoming defenses, especially the truth of the gospel of the kingdom that required spiritual discernment.

We see two main themes presented in these seven parables:
1.  Kingdom of God begins small and grows steadily despite opposition (wheat and weeds in Matt. 13:24-30, 36-43; mustard seed in 13:31-32; leaven in 13:33 and dragnet in 13:46-50)
2. Kingdom of God entered at great cost since it has unlimited value (hidden treasure in Matt. 13:44; pearl in 13:45).

We two kinds of sowing:
1. Personal growth and fellowship as God’s word is sown in individuals (Matt. 13:18-23)
2. Ministry and mission of individuals as they share and live out gospel of kingdom in the world in midst of conflict (Matt. 13:36-43)[i]

As God sends His disciples into the harvest field, they will find some people who are overcome by satan as he immediately snatches the Word from them.  Other people will be like a field of plantings whose roots wither due to the rocky soil where the Word can’t penetrate when trouble or persecution comes.  Some people’s hearts and minds are like thorns where worries of the world or the love of riches choke out the Word.  A small percentage bear fruit 100, 60 and 30 times what was sown.

The storytelling method of teaching using parables helps teachers communicate more unique insights in a vivid and enticing way compared to merely listing principles.[ii]
Describe the soil of your heart.  Is it rocky, thorny or fruit bearing? How is your spiritual receptivity? Are you letting troubles, cares of this world or deceitful of riches block the word from your heart? Turn to God right now and be healed spiritually (Matt. 13:15).

What To Do When Life Seems Out of Control (insight in Psalms)

8/24/2010

Sometimes God seems like He has abandoned us. After getting fired from my job because I refused to compromise my convictions, it took seven months to find another one. I wondered why God acted so slow. My prayers didn't seem to go anywhere. Did God realize I was obedient by confronting my boss over an area of integrity? You might be facing an uncomfortable situation. People persecute  or misunderstand you. God doesn't seem to be responding to your prayers. You are on the verge of losing hope. Life seems out of control because things aren't coming together. What are we to do when life doesn't make sense?

The Psalmist was crying out day and night with deep anguish, but God still didn't deliver him. He experienced anxiety and lack of peace until He praised God (Ps. 22:1-4). God inhabits our praises, which show our trust in Him. Crying out to God results in deliverance. It prevents disillusionment when things don't turn out as expected. Our fervent prayers allow us to deal with dishonor or disgrace from people (Ps. 22:5-6).

We have the privilege to share in Christ's sufferings here on earth (Col. 1:24). This Psalm explains the sufferings Christ experienced when He was crucified on the cross. People sneered and mocked Him (Ps. 22:7-8).  Enemies like strong bulls took advantage of Christ (Ps. 22:12-13). All His emotions were on edge. His strength was gone. He was close to death. People pierced His hands and feet in His weakened condition.  People stared at His naked body. They sold His garments  (Ps. 22:14-18).

Here in the US, we may experience these things emotionally, but in other countries Christians often share in Christ's afflictions physically.

The rest of the Psalm provides great hope when we go through afflictions. Here are the Psalmist practical suggestions:
1. Ask God immediately for assistance when you face impossible situations (Ps. 22:19-21).
2. Praise God in front of other believers and share about your deliverances with them (Ps. 22:22-24).
3. Share how God delivered you with other believers (Ps. 22:25)
4. Humbly renew your relationship with God as you seek Him daily (Ps. 22:26-27).

Here is good news! God uses our afflictions to turn people to Christ, especially our children and future generations (Ps. 22:28-31).  God used Apostle Paul's imprisonment for the greater progress of the gospel (Phil. 1:12-18).

In the trial you are facing, ask God for deliverance, praise Him in front of your family while testifying of His deliverance, and humbly renew your personal relationship with God by seeking Him each day.

Why It's Worthwhile to Follow Lord Fully (insights in Prophets)

When I was growing up, I thought religious people were straight-laced, sober and sad. The worst thing one could be was a fundamental Christian. They didn't have fun. Their lives were completely irrelevant. Going to church was the most boring thing one could do. In our culture, I believe many people hold similar beliefs. One boss made fun of me because he knew I was a Christian. He enjoyed drinking during the lunch hour and walked very tipsy afterward. What does following the Lord look like? Is it worthwhile? Would you like proof?

In today's lesson, Caleb provides a great example to show what following the Lord looks like and why it's worthwhile.

Israel inherited territory in Canaan , which Eleazar the priest, Joshua and heads of households of tribes apportioned to the various tribes (Josh. 14:1).  Caleb explained how he was 40 when Moses sent him out from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land. He followed the Lord fully by not being afraid of the giants in the land like the other spies who allowed fear to demoralize the people (Josh. 14:7-8). Here are the markers for people who follow the Lord fully:
1. Answer God's call even when the job is tough or won't help one's resume.
2. Tell the truth without fear and exercise faith by standing alone in midst of peer pressure.

Why following the Lord is worthwhile: Stable character in midst of stress

Caleb was as strong 45 years later as he was when Moses sent him to spy out the land. He boldly asked for the hill county that God had spoken to him earlier. Joshua gave Hebron to Caleb as an inheritance because he followed the Lord fully (Josh. 14:11-14). Here are additional markers for people who follow the Lord fully:
3. Resist the world, flesh and devil with consistency over the long haul in the spiritual battle.

4. Pursue God’s promise boldly with perseverance in obtaining the goal God’s communicates to us.
Why following the Lord is worthwhile: Overcome obstacles to accomplish God's will

Because of God's command, Joshua gave Caleb a portion of Judah. Caleb dispossessed the three sons of Anak and inhabitants of Debir, formerly Kiriath-sepher. He offered his daughter, Ashsah, to any man would capture the latter. Othniel defeated Kiriath-sepher and received Caleb's daughter as his wife. (Josh. 15:13-17).  She persuaded Othniel to ask Caleb for a field and he gave her upper and lower springs (Josh. 15:18-19).
Here are additional markers for people who follow the Lord fully:
5. Encourage their children to find spouses actively engaged in the spiritual battle to bring God's kingdom on earth.
6. Provide spiritual nourishment to their children and spouses.
Why following the Lord is worthwhile: Bless your future generations spiritually

Judah received an inheritance according to their families, which included cities (Josh. 15:20-62).  Sons of Judah could not drive out Jebusites who became inhabitants of Jerusalem. As a result, the Jebusites live in Jerusalem with Judah until this day. In summary, if every believer lived like Caleb, God's kingdom would be ruling in every city and cultural sphere of influence because sin would not be dwelling in our bodies (Josh. 15:63).
Here are additional markers for people who follow the Lord fully:

7. Pursue God's glory in your sphere of influence.
8. Deal harshly with sin to remain pure.
Why following the Lord is worthwhile: Become difference makers by spreading God's glory

Study in detail the life of Caleb from this passage by meditating on it. Ask God to help you apply at least one of the eight markers listed in this blog.

What "Lots" Must You Surrender? (insights in Law)

Life is funny. Sometimes we desire something so much that we go crazy searching or pursuing it. In high school, I wanted to become a golf professional. I spent hours practicing and hitting shag balls. I joined the golf team, but my game got worse. I remember playing with my dad and throwing my clubs because of poor shots. I had to surrender my unrealistic ambition of being a golf pro before I could enjoy the game. I still like to hit good shots, but it's not the end of the world if I shank a drive. What is holding you back from experiencing the abundant life God has for you?

Abram, Sarai and Lot left Egypt with all their possessions (Gen. 13:1-2). Abram originally moved to Egypt because of famine in Canaan because he didn't trust God (Gen. 12:10).  He repented by returning to the altar between Bethel representing God and Ai, the world (Gen. 12:8; 13:3-4). Like Abram or the church in Ephesus, we easily leave our first love in our relationship with God and desires we do deeds we did at first (Rev. 2:4-5).    Abram's first deeds was calling upon the Lord between Bethel and Ai in intercession for the people of the world. We are called to mediate between heavenly and earthly realms to build God’s kingdom on earth through prayer.

When it became apparent the land resources were not adequate to support both Abram’s and Lot's family and livestock, strife and quarreling ensued (Gen. 13:5-7). Abram acted as the peacemaker and let Lot chose the land he desired. Lot chose Sodom and Abram settled in Canaan (Gen. 13:8-12). The text makes a point in Gen. 13:13 that Sodom was exceedingly wicked.

After Lot separated from Abram, the Lord spoke to Abram. He asked him to lift up or desire the land God promised to him in Gen. 12:1-3. He reaffirmed His covenant of land and descendants forever (
Gen. 13:14-17).
Notice that God responded more personally and specifically with Abram after he obeyed God by separating from Lot. Remember the original command was to leave his family.

Abram also received blessings from God. The word, make, in the phrase, " I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth" meant God established a new relationship with Abram and his descendants. He transformed and assigned special responsibilities to them. God blesses us so we can be a blessing to others in making disciples to further His kingdom on earth.

Most likely, Abram was still hurting after his bad experience with Lot. Abram needed some encouragement that only a real relationship with God could provide. Like Abram, we may have to walk through, climb up, step over, face off, shut up, or do what we never thought we could do in order to overcome all the obstacles that life or Satan throws at us. Doing this requires that we hear God when He speaks to us.

What "Lots" must you surrender so the Lord God can become more personal and specific with you?

Compassion Makes Gospel Beautiful (insights in NT)

8/20/2010

Picture
I grew up in a church that focused on compassion and justice with hurting people. After I became a believer in an evangelical, Bible church, proclaiming the gospel and discipling people toward spiritual maturity was our sole concern. Who's right? Both! In Matt. 11, Christ emphasized sharing the gospel. In this study from Matt. 12, Christ addresses compassion. We need a balanced Christianity to follow in the footsteps of Christ and  be attractive to the world.

Jesus and His disciples ate on the Sabbath. He used it as a teaching opportunity to show the priority of compassion over sacrificial good works (Matt. 12:1-7). When Christ says He "desires compassion,"the word, desire, literally means "pressing into action" or doing the will of God. Compassion literally means mercy or "special and immediate regard to the misery which is the consequence of sins." In Matt. 11, sharing the gospel through evangelism allows people to experience God's grace and forgiveness of sin. Afterward, God's compassion and mercy address the consequences of sin rather than passing judgment or condemnation on them.

Christ illustrated compassion and mercy by healing the man with a withered hand on the Sabbath (Matt. 12:8-13). The Pharisees responded to real human need with judgment and accusations (Matt. 12:10,14). Jesus came not only to see and save the lost but to proclaim and model compassion and justice by healing hurting humanity (Luke 19:10; Matt. 12:18-21). We see another illustration of Jesus demonstrating compassion when He casted out demons from a blind and dumb man. The Pharisees came to rescue, opposing Christ again.  Jesus called their bluff and said they were nuts to think Satan motivated Him to cast out demons (Matt. 12:22-29).

Jesus then addresses the root of compassion. Why are some people compassionate and others not? He explained blasphemy of the Holy Spirit as resistance against the convincing power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus implied the Pharisees lacked compassion because they rejected Him (Matt. 12:30-32). When we share the gospel and someone rejects it by not believing, they are blaspheming the Holy Spirit. At the point of faith, God justifies or declares them righteous like Abraham when he believed God (Gen. 15:6).

Christ moves from unbelievers to addressing believers. Our testimony to the world is in large part determined by the words we speak (Matt. 12:33-37). A different Greek word for "justify" is used in Matt. 12:37. Instead of declaring us righteous, our words justify or bring out the essence of our personhood by revealing our character. Our words can be idle and unprofitable or active and profitable to stir people to love and good works (Heb. 10:24-25). Ask yourself: Do I build others up or tear them down? Do I encourage or discourage others. Do I unify or divide people? Both unbelievers and believers can lack compassion.

Unfortunately, the church has been its own worst enemy in repelling people from the gospel by the caustic words we share with one another and the outside world. The world condemns us because of our lack of compassion expressed through divisive words (Matt. 12:37).

Even the church can get caught in the quest for signs or miracles by focusing on worldly marketing techniques instead of pursuing an authentic relationship with Christ (Matt. 12:38-45). Selling our soul out to celebrity and media-hype publicity to win a hearing degenerates our character so our last state becomes worst than the first (Matt. 12:45). In contrast, Christ is looking for those who do His will by relating intimately with Him as His brother or sister (Matt. 12:46-50).

Ask God to impart love and compassion in your life as a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Who can you come alongside and show love? What will compassion look like?

Troubles Ignite Prayer and Heavenly Help (insight in Psalms)

8/19/2010

Picture
If you are like me, I exhaust every ounce of strength before I call upon God for help. When I misplace my keys, I go around the house like a chicken with its head cut off before it dawns on me, "Have you prayed about it?" If I'm going through a frustrating circumstance, my default mode is complaining to God or someone instead of praising Him. We are to rejoice always, pray without ceasing and give thanks for all things (1 Thess. 5:16-18). When, where, what, how and why do we access this great resource in the person of our heavenly Father instead of relying on human strategies?

When and Where Do We Access God?
If we never had troubles, we wouldn't seek God. The Psalmist knew where to find help. He looked toward the sanctuary whenever trouble arose (Ps. 20:1-2). Today, we find access to God in our heart since we are temple of the Holy Spirit.

What Prerequisites Enable Us to Access God?
The meal and burnt offerings listed in Ps. 20:3 signify a total surrender and sacrifice of our lives to God where we desire divine, not human support. God will fulfill our purpose if we seek Him above anything else. Deliverance from trouble doesn't come externally, but from our innermost being where God dwells (Ps. 20:4).

How Do We Access God?
We find true joy, freedom and prosperity from God. He demonstrates love in action through answered prayer (Ps. 20:5-9). Our prayers and praise to God show that He is king instead of human resources designed to make our life more comfortable. I believe trouble facilitates a refocusing of our eyes on Christ and not creature comforts that so easily distract us.

Why Do We Access God?
Troubles allow us to find our joy and strength in our relationship with God (Ps. 21:1-3). Real life comes in answer to prayer. So much of our lives are wrapped around possessions, power or prestige (Ps. 21:4). We are deceived in thinking that exercise, cosmetics money, position and connections buy beauty, honor and glory. We obtain them as a gift in answer to prayer.

To be a committed prayer warrior, he or she must see God as the exalted and Supreme Being of the universe (Ps. 21:7). Those who walk with God trust Him to defeat any enemy or obstacle thwarting the fulfillment of His will (Ps. 21:8-13).

What trouble are you facing? What is hindering you from seeking God in prayer? Go to God right now as the exalted Supreme being of the universe.

Setting Goals Enables Us to Fulfill God's Will

8/18/2010

Many people go through life without setting any goals. The most successful people set goals. For many years I drifted through life and followed what other people said I should do. I got a degree in Industrial Engineering, but did not have a passion for the field. After some job losses, God woke me up and finally pursued my passion. I had to set a goal. How about you? Is there an area of your life where you are not making progress like family, marriage, social, spiritual, financial, education or vocational?

In this section of Joshua, we will see the importance of setting goals. Israel defeated 31 kings and possessed a large amount of land with specific boundaries (Josh. 12:1,24). God's mission for our lives includes victory and success if we set goals.  Each tribe of Israel received a portion of the land according to their division (Josh. 12:7-8).  God wants to occupy each area of our lives, but we often let laziness, apathy and fear reign instead of setting goals.
We only have so much time to accomplish the will of God (John 9:4).

When Joshua was getting old, the Lord said much of the land remained to be possessed (Josh. 13:1-6). God would drive out the inhabitants from before Israel (Josh. 13:6). Even though the conquest of Canaan was still incomplete, Joshua knew an immediate distribution of the land would give Israel a taste of success and encourage them to pursue greater victories (Josh. 13:7-12).

Specific and measurable goals provide milestones to know if we are meeting them. Josh. 13:13 includes a progress report where Israel did not meet their goal of possessing the Geshurites and Maacathites. Writing down our accomplishments spur further action. Josh. 13:22 provides an example listing the killing of Balaam with a spear.

Each of us are called to different functions. Levi was the only tribe not receiving land since the Lord was their inheritance (Josh. 13:14,33). God calls out certain people to spend time with Him as their vocation to equip and empower the body of Christ. Most people, including the other tribes in Israel, had an inheritance of land given to them (Josh. 13:15-32). For us, it may be a business, job or responsibility God has assigned to us. He has a master plan for every person and congregation to bring God's kingdom on earth. Our goal is to discern God's will to "work the works of Him who sent Me, as long as it is day." Setting goals allows us to fulfill the work He calls us to accomplish.

A practical goal setting pathway is the acronym, SMART:
S: specific

M: measurable
A: achievable
R: realistic
T: timely

Set a "SMART" goal for an area of your life like family, marriage, social, spiritual, financial, education or vocational.
