Larry, a teenager, thought he knew more than his dad, Joe. He saw Larry enter the driveway and walk through the door. “I was hanging out with my friends,” Larry said. “What were you guys doing?” Joe asked. “Nothing! “We were bored,” Larry said, “so we cut down some small trees.”

“Don’t you think there are more profitable things to do?” Joe asked, “What would Jesus think about this?”

After further dialogue and questions to discern his son’s motivations and drives, Joe learned Larry feared he wouldn’t be accepted by his friends. He needed security.

Let’s listen in on their discussion. Joe said, “Not only does Christ unconditionally accept us but He wants to launch us into the most exciting life possible. Joining God in transforming lives. Let’s look together what Luke 8 says about practices that transform lives.

“Transforming ministry is not a solo activity”

1. Work as a team proclaiming kingdom
The 12 apostles were with Jesus as He proclaimed the kingdom of God in various cities. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, wife of Herod's steward, Susanna and many others healed by Jesus contributed their support out of their private means (Luke 8:1-3). Work as a team to proclaim the kingdom of God.

“Encourage people toward a hope-filled future”

2. Paint a compelling future to open minds
Jesus spoke a parable of the sower who sowed seeds—some fell beside the road where birds ate it. Some fell on rocky soil that withered away without moisture. Some fell among thorns that choked it out. Some fell into good soil and produced a crop 100 times as great. He who has ears to hear, let him hear (Luke 8:4-8). Paint a compelling future with stories to open minds.

“Ask questions to know how to impart God’s word at the point of need in a person’s life”

3. Impart biblical truth for spiritual maturity
The seeds are the word of God.  Seed beside the road heard and the devil removed the word from their heart so they couldn't believe and be saved. Seed on rocky soil received the word with joy without firm root, they fell away during temptation. Seed that fell among thorns was choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, without mature fruit. Seeds in good soil heard the word with a good heart and bore fruit with perseverance under trial (Luke 8:9-15). Impart biblical truth that bears fruit in spiritual maturity.

“Become a model so disciples know how to obey”

4. Model obedience so others see it
No one covers a lamp, but puts it on a lampstand so people can see the light. Whoever has more will be given, and whoever does not have even what he seems to have shall be taken from him. Jesus said His mothers and brothers hear the word of God and do it
(Luke 8:16-21). Model obedience so others see your life.

“Trials can derail our ministry if we don’t persevere by faith”

5. Persevere by faith in trials
Jesus and His disciples got into a boat during a great storm saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" Jesus rebuked the wind and the sea became calm. He said, "Where is your faith?" They were fearful and amazed. He commanded the winds and water to obey Him
(Luke 8:22-25). Persevere by faith in trials.

“The least likely” people are the most likely to multiply disciples”

6. Cast out demons to encourage multiplication
A Gerasene demonic cried out in a loud voice to not torment him while acknowledging Jesus as the Son of the Most High God. Jesus gave the demon permission to leave the man and enter the swine. When people found the man delivered and in his right mind, they became frightened and asked Jesus to leave. He told the man to describe the great things God did for him (Luke 8:26-39). Cast out demons to encourage disciples to multiply.

“Often people must become desperate before they’re ready to trust Christ”

7. Seek response of faith
A woman with a hemorrhage for 12 years couldn’t be healed by anyone. She touched the fringe of Jesus' cloak, and her hemorrhage stopped immediately. After telling people why she touched Him and how she been healed immediately, He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace" (Luke 8:40-48). Seek response of faith when people are ready.

“Help people trust Christ by praying for special healing or supernatural intervention at the point of need”

8. Expect God to act
Jairus, a synagogue official, entreated Jesus to come to his dying daughter. After she died, someone told him to not trouble the Teacher anymore. Jesus said to not be afraid, but believe so she would be made well. He told  them to stop weeping since she wasn’t dead. Jesus raised her from the dead after saying, "Child, arise!"(Luke 8:49-56). Expect God to act by speaking His word.

Which of the eight practices that transform lives will you do today? Who’s on your team to keep you accountable?

Find the Lost to Find Life

It’s easy to stop a good habit. Distractions, low motivation, laziness, disobedience are enemies. One habit I had was knocking on doors. I allowed other things to crowd it out.
A spiritual leader asked if I would take a Hispanic, church-planting pastor and knock on doors with him in an area where Spanish speaking people live. I agreed!

We knocked on our first door. A lady answered. She had this “deer in the headlights” look. I thought--why am I doing this? Catching my breadth, I said we were enjoying the beautiful day and asked if she had any personal or family items to pray about.

We prayed out loud that her stints would be effective, which she appreciated. Later, as trust increased, she said a friend often invited her to church.

“Let me show you something that changed my life,” I said. My friend noticed a Spanish guy standing in the driveway next door. He left me and went over to speak in Spanish with him. I shared the Three Circles—brokenness, God’s design and Gospel. Guess what? Both individuals trusted Christ as Savior.

Why did I stop prayer knocking and miss the blessing? You don’t have to prayer knock but God may want you to share the gospel with co-worker, neighbor, parent, grandparent, or friend.

Consider these insights from John 10:7-16:
  • Share the gospel of Christ since real sheep listen to Him. Benefit to sheep: protection from destroyed life (vs. 7-10a)
  • Follow example of Jesus as good shepherd to lay down your life for the sheep. Benefit to sheep: protection from false teaching (vs. 11-13)
  • Know the sheep through dialogue. Benefit to sheep: protection from inauthentic relationships (vs. 14-15)

In summary: Find the sheep outside the sheep pen (v. 16).

Those who follow the Good Shepherd in leaving the 99 and finding the lost one  will have an abundant and meaningful life (Luke 15:3-7; John 10:10b).

I often took John 10:10 out of context looking at personal blessing apart from finding the lost or losing my life to find it (John 12:23-26).

Equip Spiritually Healthy People to Disciple the Needy (Insights in Prophets)

In order to equip spiritually healthy people to disciple the needy, grow nations with inter-generational mentoring by encouraging families to mourn over sin that motivates prayer, transform young people into spiritual jewels who attract others through family and friend accountability for character development, and develop  model cities so other nations seek God as king over every area of life.

Develop Model Cities So Other Nations Seek God
God told Zechariah He was jealous and dwelt in Jerusalem, called the City of Truth and Holy Mountain. Both old and young people sat in the streets enjoying themselves. God would bring people from various nations to live, build the temple in Jerusalem and be a blessing as they experienced fruitfulness. Instead of fear, they loved truth and experienced peace with one another and in the courts. The inhabitants of many cities came to Jerusalem to seek God. Ten men from all languages and nations would say to one Jew, "Let us go with you, because we have heard that God is with you" (Zech. 8:1-23). Develop model cities so other nations seek God and His truth.

Transform Young People Into Spiritual Jewels Who Attract Others
The word of the Lord was against Hadrach and His eye was on all mankind. He would remove Tyre's possessions and destroy her power on the seas causing surrounding nations to fear. Foreigners occupied Ashdod and God destroyed the Philistines' pride. Those left became Judah's leaders and He defended His house against enemy oppression. Zechariah prophesied that Jesus would come on a donkey bringing righteousness and salvation. God destroyed Ephraim's chariots and Jerusalem's war-horses. He proclaimed peace, extended His rule and freed prisoners across the world.
God saved them as His flock to sparkle like jewels in a crown, being attractive and beautiful. Grain and new wine made young men and women thrive, respectively (Zech. 9:1-17). Transform young people into thriving spiritual jewels attracting others as you proclaim Christ.

Grow Nations with Inter-Generational Mentoring
Zechariah said to ask God for rain in springtime to grow plants. Idols spoke deceit and diviners told false dreams that gave vain comfort. People wandered like sheep and were oppressed without a shepherd. God's anger burned against the shepherds. He cared for Judah to make them like a proud horse in battle. Judah brought the cornerstone, tent peg, battle bow and every ruler to be like mighty men trampling the muddy streets in battle. God strengthened, saved and restored Judah with compassion. The Ephraimites became like mighty men with glad hearts influencing their children to rejoice in God. He strengthened them in the Lord to walk in His name (Zech. 10:1-12). Grow nations in Christ with inter-generational mentoring.

Equip Spiritually Healthy People to Disciple the Needy
Zechariah said to hear the shepherds wailing because the lack of spiritually mature people led to the destruction of rich pastures. He handed them over to his neighbor and king who pastured the flock marked for slaughter hoping to become rich. He shepherded the oppressed of the flock with two staffs called Favor and Union. In one month he got rid of three shepherds. He broke the staff called Favor revoking the covenant made with the nations. The afflicted of the flock paid him 30 pieces of silver and he threw it into the house of the Lord to the potter. He then broke his second staff called Union breaking the brotherhood between Judah and Israel. The took again the foolish shepherd's equipment who did not care for the lost, seek the young, heal the injured or feed the healthy but ate the choice sheep. He pronounced woe to render the worthless shepherd powerless because he deserted the flock (Zech. 11:1-17). Equip spiritually healthy people to disciple the needy with compassion and unity.

Encourage Families Mourning Over Sin to Motivate Prayer
God was going to make Jerusalem an immovable rock before all nations. He would make Judah's leaders like a firepot in a woodpile and flaming torch among sheaves to destroy all nations that attacked them. God poured out on the house of David and Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They would look, mourn and grieve bitterly over the one they pierced. Great weeping in Jerusalem occurred clan by clan with their wives (Zech. 12:1-14). Encourage families to mourn their sin so God can pour out grace and intercession.

Design Family and Friend Accountability for Character Development
On that day, a fountain was opened to the house of David and Jerusalem that cleansed them from sin and banished idols from the land. God removed the prophets and spirit of impurity from the land with accountability to parents. Every false prophet admitted he deceived others and received wounds from his friends. God purified the one-third left as a remnant through fire. He refined them like silver and tested them like gold. They called on His name and He answered them as His people (Zech. 13:1-9). Design family and friend accountability for character development.

Worship God as King Over Every Area of Life for Fruitfulness
Plunder was divided in the day of the Lord. Nations fought and captured Jerusalem with half going into exile and the rest remaining. The Lord fought against those nations and His feet stood on the Mount of Olives splitting it in two from east to west, forming a great valley. They would flee without daytime or nighttime. Living water would flow out from Jerusalem, half to the eastern sea and half to the western sea in summer and winter. The Lord would be king over the whole earth. Jerusalem would be inhabited, never again destroyed. The nations who fought against Jerusalem would have their flesh, eyes and tongue rot. They had great panic and attacked each other. The nations collected their wealth, worshiped the King yearly in Jerusalem and celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles to prevent the plague of no rain. Every person and article would be holy to the Lord (Zech. 14:1-21). Worship God as king over every area of life for fruitfulness.

In order to equip spiritually healthy people to disciple the needy, do the following:
1. Grow nations in Christ with inter-generational mentoring
2. Encourage families to mourn over sin that motivates prayer
3. Transform young people into spiritual jewels who attract others
4. Design family and friend accountability for character development
5. Develop  model cities so other nations seek God and His truth
6. Worship God as king over every area of life

Experiencing the Mighty Power of God in Your Life (Insights in NT)

"The deeper we are willing to enter into the death of self, the more shall we know of the mighty power of God, and the perfect blessedness of a perfect trust" (Andrew Murray).

Believe God's grace and preach Christ's resurrection being accountable to mature believers as you confront the false law gospel, let the law reveal sin, receive the Holy Spirit, experience godly character and do good to all men.

Believe in God's Grace and Preach Christ's Resurrection
God who raised Jesus from the dead for the forgiveness of sins to rescue people from the present evil age sent Paul to preach grace and peace according to God's will and glory. Paul was astonished the Galatians quickly deserted God and Christ's grace by turning to a different gospel. Those who preached a perverted gospel should be eternally condemned. Paul would not be Christ's servant if he tried to please and win people's approval. Christ revealed the gospel to Paul. It did not originate or was taught by men. Paul persecuted and tried zealously to destroy the church of God while advancing in Judaism. God set him apart from birth and revealed His Son through grace so He could preach Christ among the Gentiles. Instead of consulting the apostles in Jerusalem, he went immediately to Arabia and later returned to Damascus. After three years, he stayed fifteen days with Peter and saw James, the Lord's brother. The churches of Judea did not know Paul even though they heard he preached the faith he once tried to destroy (Gal. 1:1-24). Believe in God's grace and preach Christ's resurrection to forgive sins and rescue people from the world.

Be Accountable to Mature Believers
Fourteen years later, Paul took Barnabas and Titus to meet with the Jerusalem leaders in verifying that he preached a correct gospel. They ignored false brothers who wanted Titus to be circumcised as a Greek. In this way, the Galatians would understand the freedom and truth of the gospel. James, Peter and John added nothing to Paul's message to the Gentiles, but gave him and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized God's grace among them. They agreed that Paul and his team should preach to the Gentiles and they to the Jews without forgetting the poor (Gal. 2:1-10). Be accountable to mature believers as confirmation that your ministry is on the right track.

Confront the False Law Gospel
Peter separated himself from eating with Gentiles after the circumcision group arrived. Other Jews and Barnabas were led astray by this hypocrisy. When Paul saw they did not act according to the truth of the gospel, he confronted Peter in front of everyone. Why would a Jew who lived liked a Gentile force them to follow Jewish customs. A man was proved a sinner because he could not be justified by observing the law but only by faith in Christ. Paul died to the law so he might live for God. Being crucified with Christ, he no longer lived, but Christ lived in him. He lived his life by faith in Christ who loved and gave Himself for him. Paul did not set aside God's grace because Christ died for sinners who never could be righteous through the law (Gal. 2:11-21). Confront the law gospel in example and words as you live by faith through Christ's grace.

Let the Law Reveal Sin
Paul asked the Galatians who deceived them in thinking they could receive the Spirit by observing the law through human effort instead of believing in Christ. God gave the Spirit and worked miracles in response to believing in Christ, not following the law. For example, Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. Those who believe as Gentiles were children of Abraham.  They were justified by their faith like Abraham in blessing all nations through him. Because no one could keep the law perfectly, Christ redeemed people from the curse of the Law by taking it upon Himself when was crucified. The blessing given to Abraham came to the Gentiles by faith in Christ through the promise of the Spirit. The Law came 430 years after Abraham even though it could not impart life because of man's sin. Scripture declared that the world was held as a prisoner of sin by the law until faith was revealed.  The law led people to Christ so they could be justified by faith and not under the law's supervision. People became sons of God through faith in Christ. Every race, occupation or gender became one and belonged to Christ as Abraham's seed and heirs according to promise (Gal. 3:1-29). Let the Law reveal sin and have faith in Christ to be made righteous.

Receive the Holy Spirit to Walk in Freedom
Children and even slaves who owned the whole estate were still subject to guardians until the time set by their father. Believers were slaves to the basic principles of the world. However, God sent His Son, born of a woman under the law, to redeem those under law so they could receive their full rights of sons by the Holy Spirit in calling out "Abba, Father." The Galatians denied the joy of their inheritance as sons by becoming slaves in observing special days and months. Paul who felt the pains of childbirth until Christ was formed in them feared he wasted time in telling the truth. False teachers wanted to alienate the Galatians from him. Abraham had two sons, one born naturally (Ismael) by a slave woman, Hagar, and the other born as a result of promise (Isaac) by a free woman, Sarah. Hagar represented the Law and slavery. Sarah represented the covenant of promise and freedom. Ismael born in the ordinary way persecuted Isaac who was born by the power of the Holy Spirit. Scripture said to reject the slave woman's son since he would never share in the inheritance of the free woman's son. Therefore, be children of the free woman instead of the slave woman (Gal. 4:1-31). Receive the Holy Spirit to walk in freedom as God's son instead of slavery to the Law.

Experience Godly Character
Standing firm in Christ's freedom prevented slavery's yoke. Those who became circumcised must obey the whole Law. Trying to be justified by Law alienated them from Christ and His grace. Faith through the Holy Spirit produced righteousness. In Christ, neither the act of circumcision nor uncircumcision had value, but faith expressing itself through love. Those who preached circumcision caused confusion like yeast spreading itself through the whole batch of dough. Freedom gave no license for indulging the flesh, but serving one another in love. Loving your neighbor as yourself summarized the Law to prevent people from biting, devouring and destroying one another. Those who lived by the Spirit inherited the kingdom of God and prevented fleshly desires like sexual immorality, impurity, party spirit, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness and orgies. The fruit of the Spirit was love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control without Law. Those who belonged to Christ crucified the flesh with its passions while keeping in step with the Spirit without conceit or provoking and envying each other (Gal. 5:1-26). Experience godly character through the power of the Holy Spirit as you serve others in love.

Do Good and Bless All Men
Spiritual people watch themselves to stop temptation so  they can gently restore people caught in sin. Carry each other burdens to fulfill the law of Christ. Deception occurred when anyone thought he was something when he was nothing. Each should carry his own load and not compare himself to others. Those who received instruction in the word must share financially with the teacher. God cannot be mocked since men reap what they sow. He who sowed to please his flesh reaped destruction and the one who sowed to please the Spirit reaped eternal life. Doing good to everybody, especially believers, at every opportunity, reaped a harvest at the proper time. Those who boasted about their flesh by compelling  circumcision desired a good outward impression and avoid persecution for the cross of Christ.  In contrast, Paul boasted in the cross through which the world was crucified to him and he to the world. Works like circumcision or uncircumcision meant nothing compared to the new creation that produced peace and mercy (Gal. 6:1-18). Do good and bless all men spiritually, emotionally, financially and physically as you have opportunity.

Do you believe in God's grace?
Do you preach Christ's resurrection?
Are you accountable to mature believers?
Do you confront the false law gospel?
Do you let the law reveal sin in your life?
Do you receive the Holy Spirit moment by moment?
Do you experience godly character as you trust the Holy Spirit?
Do you bless all men making the most of the opportunity?

Risk Believing God (Insights in Law)

Maintaining the status quo and not believing God to defeat “giants” in the land lead to dying in the wilderness without experiencing His mission in the world. God chooses a particular mission for every believer in the world. He desires every person walk in that mission.  Fathers and leaders have responsibility to equip their physical and spiritual offspring so they can discover their mission in the world. Identifying the world’s lies and deceptions that compromise families is a vital first step. To experience God’s peace and well-being, spend sufficient time with God in vital spiritual disciplines. Numbers 25-30 provide a blueprint in believing God.

Motivation for Believing God
Israel indulged in sexual immorality with Moabite women and worshiped their gods including the Baal of Peor. The Lord told Moses to kill the leaders of the people in broad daylight to turn away God’s anger. Phinehas, son of Aaron, pierced an Israelite man and a Midianite woman through the body to stop the plague after 24,000 died while Moses and the congregation wept at the tent of meeting. The Lord told Moses that Phinehas' zealousness for God's honor turned away His wrath so He did not destroy Israel. He made God’s covenant of peace a lasting priesthood and atonement for the Israelites. The Lord said to kill the Midianites whose hostility and deception concerning Peor caused the plague (Num. 25:1-18). Zealousness for God’s glory motivates prayer to defeat the evil one’s lies and deceptions so you embrace the truth of God's word.

Environment for Believing God

God spoke to Moses and Eleazar to take a census of those 20 years and older in Israel by their fathers’ households who could go out to war. The earth swallowed up Dathan and Abiram and devoured 250 men by fire who followed Korah when they rebelled against Moses and Aaron as a warning.  The sons of families numbered according to the 12 tribes totaled 601,730. They divided the land as an inheritance in proportion to the number of names according to lot between the larger and smaller groups. Aaron’s sons died when they offered strange fire before the Lord. Only Joshua and Caleb survived in the wilderness (Num. 26:1-65). Obedient families create the environment for children to implement God's mission in the world.

Passion for Believing God
The daughters of Zelophehad stood before Moses, Eleazar and the leaders of Israel at the tent of meeting saying their father died for his own sin in the desert and was not among Korah’s followers who disobeyed the Lord. They asked why their father’s name was withdrawn because he had no son. After they asked for property among their father’s relatives, Moses brought the daughters’ case before God. The Lord told Moses that it was legal to give them property and turn their father’s inheritance over to them as his nearest relative (Num. 27:1-11). God exalts those who passionately seek Him in doing His mission.

Accountability for Believing God
The Lord said for Moses to go up the mountain and see the land He had given Israel since he would die like Aaron. The Lord reminded Moses that he rebelled against God by not treating Him  holy before Israel at the waters of Meribah in of Kadesh. Moses asked the Lord to appoint a man to lead Israel so they would not be like sheep without a shepherd. God instructed Moses to lay his hand on Joshua, commission and put some of his authority on him so the congregation would obey him. Joshua would stand before Eleazar who asked for the judgment of Urim before the Lord. At his command they would go out and come in (Num. 27:12-23). God appoints leaders who prayerfully lead the flock so every sheep has a shepherd.

Means for Believing God

The Lord through Moses commanded Israel to present two one-year-old male lambs without defect as a continual burnt offering daily in the morning and at twilight along with a grain offering mixed with oil. At the beginning of each month, present burnt and grain offering mixed with oil to the Lord. Present one male goat for a sin offering to make atonement. On the 14th day of the first mouth they observed the Lord’s Passover with unleavened bread eaten for seven days beginning the following day. On the first and seventh day, they did not work (Num. 28:1-31). God requires daily spiritual disciplines of surrender, confess sins, read His word  and prayer to live out His will.

Commitment for Believing God

In the seventh month of the first day, have a holy convocation to do no work. Offer burnt offerings as a pleasing  aroma to the Lord, grain offering mixed with oil and a sin offering to make atonement as an offering by fire to the Lord. On tenth day of the seventh month, have a holy convocation to humble yourselves and not do any work. Present a continual burnt, grain and sin offering. On the 15th day of the seventh month, have a holy convocation to do no work. Observe a feast to the Lord for seven days and present a continual burnt offering, grain offering mixed with oil and sin offering. On the eighth day, have a solemn assembly to do no work. Present these offerings to the Lord at the appointed times in the tabernacle where God reveals His will besides the vow, freewill, burnt, grain and peace offerings. Moses spoke to Israel what the Lord commanded (Num. 29:1-40). Spend sufficient time with the Lord daily so you discern His will and become a pleasing aroma to Him and others.

Integrity for Believing God
Moses told the heads of Israel's tribes to not break their word when they make a vow. A woman has a binding obligation when she makes a vow while living in her father's house. The Lord releases her from a vow when her father or husband nullifies the vow. If a husband nullifies them later after hearing about them, he is responsible for her guilt (Num. 30:1-16). Fulfill promises you make to God and others.

Ask for the power of the Holy Spirit as you risk believing God using the following blueprint:
1. Motivation: Zealousness for God’s glory motivates prayer to defeat the evil one’s lies and deceptions so you embrace the truth of God's word.
2. Environment: Obedient families create the environment for children to implement God's mission in the world.
3. Passion: God exalts those who passionately seek Him in doing His mission.
4. Accountability: God appoints leaders who prayerfully lead the flock so every sheep has a shepherd.
5. Means: God requires daily spiritual disciplines of surrender, confess sins, read His word  and prayer to live out His will.
6. Commitment: Spend sufficient time with the Lord daily so you discern His will and become a pleasing aroma to Him and others.
7. Integrity: Fulfill promises you make to God and others.

Necessity of Accountability (Insights in Prophets)

Picture
No task or enterprise will succeed unless you have accountability. People rebel and lose focus unless they are made accountable for their actions. I know from experience having a coach or partner helps you stay focused on your goals. God's "disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness" (Heb. 12:10).  When David was old, Abishag nursed and kept the king warm. Adonijah exalted himself saying he wanted to be king. He prepared chariots and horsemen with 50 men to run before him. His father never crossed him saying, "Why have you done so?" Only Joab and Abiathar followed him (1 Kings 1:1-10). People exalt themselves in evil actions or rebellion when they don't have accountability.

Nathan told Bathsheba to ask David whether Solomon was to be king after him and not Adonijah. She said that Adonijah had sacrificed animals and invited all the sons of the king, along with Abiathar and Joab, but not Solomon. Bathsheba and Nathan asked who would succeed David as king so she and Solomon would not be considered offenders (1 Kings 1:11-27). Accountability confronts evil by seeking truth.

David said Solomon would be king and ride on David's mule. He would be brought down to Gihon so Zadok the priest and Nathan could anoint Solomon as ruler over Israel and Judah (1 Kings 1:28-37). Accountability trusts faithful workers to follow through on their actions.

After he was anointed, the people rejoiced and the earth shook. Adonijah heard the uproar and the report that Solomon's name and throne would be greater than David's.  Solomon said Adonijah would be killed if wickedness was found in him (1 Kings 1:38-53). Accountability increases your kingdom impact so God is glorified.

David challenged Solomon to be strong and walk in God's commandments to succeed in all he would do. The Lord would have his sons sit on the throne if they walked before Him in truth with all their heart and soul. David said Joab should be killed because he shed the innocent blood of Abner and Amasa. David said that kindness be shown to Barzillai's sons by having them eat at Solomon's table. They assisted David when he fled from Absalom. Because Shimei cursed David, he told Solomon to show wisdom and even have him killed (1 Kings 2:1-9). Accountability challenges people to obey God's word and reap the consequences of their actions.

David died and Solomon sat on his father's throne with his kingdom firmly established. Solomon had Adonijah killed after he asked Bathsheba if Abishag could be his wife.  Solomon dismissed Abiathar as priest, which fulfilled God's word concerning the house of Eli (1 Kings 2:10-27). Accountability makes the tough choices in removing people from your team.

Joab was killed so David's house and throne could have peace from the Lord forever. He appointed Benaiah to replace Joab and Zadok to replace Abiathar (1 Kings 2:28-35). Accountability appoints proven people in key positions.

Solomon told Shimei to build a house in Jerusalem and threatened death if he left it. When Shimei left to get his servants, Solomon confronted him about his evil heart and what he did to David. By having Shimei killed, the Lord returned evil on his head. The kingdom was established in the hands of Solomon (1 Kings 2:36-46). Accountability establishes boundaries so people suffer consequences if they violate them.

Review the underlined principles about accountability above and ask God what actions you should take in your life, family, business or ministry.

Ways God Protects You (Insights in Prophets)

When danger chases after you, do you get angry, give up or fight it? When things don't go your way, do you run hoping the grass is greener on the other side? In  1 Sam. 23, we learn from David's experiences with Saul about specific strategies in protecting yourself from danger. Instead of defeat, become an overcomer. Although specific prayer provides a foundation, other people, your own thinking and God's sovereignty work together in helping you overcome danger and stress.

David learned Philistines were fighting Keilah and plundering threshing floors. David asked the Lord if he should go and attack the Philistines. The Lord said to attack the Philistines and deliver Keilah. David’s men said they were afraid in Judah. Then David inquired once more and the Lord answered, “Arise, go down to Keilah, for I will give the Philistines into your hand.” David and his men struck them with a great slaughter and delivered Keilah (1 Sam. 23:1-6). God gives specific strategies in answer to prayer in the midst of danger.

Abiathar the son of Ahimelech came down with the ephod in his hand. Saul summoned all the people to wage war against David in Keilah. He knew Saul was plotting evil against him and asked Abiathar the priest to the bring the ephod. David asked God if Saul would come to the city and whether Keilah would surrender him into his hand. After asking a second time, God said they would surrender him. David and his 600 men departed and he stayed in the wilderness in the strongholds as Saul sought him everyday but God did not deliver him into his hand. (1 Sam. 23:7-14). God provides wisdom in answer to specific prayer so you are protected from evil.

When David became aware that Saul was seeking his life, Jonathan encouraged him in God by saying not to be afraid as Saul wouldn't find him and he would eventually become king with Jonathan next to him. The two of them made a covenant before the Lord (1 Sam. 23:15-18). God uses accountability partners to encourage you during times of danger and stress.

The Ziphites suggested to Saul that David was hiding with them in strongholds at Horesh. Saul asked for verification of David's hiding place before he would go with them since he was aware of his cunning ways (1 Sam. 23:19-23). God uses sanctified and shrewd thinking for protection.

When Saul and his men went to find David, he stayed in the wilderness of Maon after being told of their search. Saul pursued him on one side of the mountain and David and his men stayed on the other side. A messenger came to Saul saying the Philistines made a raid on the land so he suspended his search of David. The place was called the Rock of Escape (1 Sam. 23:24-29). God sovereignly arranges circumstances for your protection.

Review the following strategies and ask how God wants you to apply them in your "dangerous" situation:
1. Ask God to show you how to respond in the situation.
2. Ask God for wisdom on how to be protected from evil.
3. Allow your accountability partner or friend to encourage you in times of danger.
4. Use sanctified and shrewd thinking to overcome danger.
5. Trust God's sovereignty to arrange circumstances for your protection.

Accountability Partner Keeps You in the Race (Insights in Prophets)

Accountability partners not only help you walk in truth and wisdom instead of deception and fear (1 Sam. 18), but help you be successful in fulfilling your mission so the enemy doesn't take you out. Remember that "your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (1 Pet. 5:8). The last thing he wants is for you to be successful in fulfilling your God-given mission. God provided Jonathan as an accountability partner so David could stay in the race to fulfill His destiny (1 Sam. 19-20).

Saul told Jonathan to put David to death. Jonathan greatly delighted in David, told him to hide in a secret place and learned everything Saul would say about him to tell David. Jonathan spoke well of David reminding his father that he hadn’t sinned and his deeds benefitted him when he killed Goliath to bring great deliverance. Jonathan reasoned that it didn’t make sense to shed innocent blood by killing David. Since Saul vowed not to put David to death, Jonathan brought him to Saul I Sam. 19:1-7). Every person needs an accountability partner to support them in times of trial.

David defeated Philistines with great slaughter. An evil spirit from the Lord came on Saul so he took spear to pin David to the wall while he played the harp. He escaped that night. Michal let David down through window and he escaped again. She placed household idol on David’s bed and said he was sick. Saul asked why she deceived him (1 Sam. 19:8-17).  In addition to your accountability partner, allow your extended network of friends to protect you from Satan’s schemes.

David came to Samuel and told all Saul had done to him. He and Samuel stayed in Naioth. When Saul’s messengers saw company of prophets prophesying with Samuel presiding over them, Spirit of God came upon the messengers and they prophesied three times. Saul laid down naked all that day and people said. “Is Saul also among the prophets?” (1 Sam. 19:18-24). Corporate prayer among the church releases God's power for protection from your enemies.

David asked Jonathan what he did or iniquity that caused Saul to seek his life. Jonathan reassured his support that Saul would not hide anything from him. David said there is “hardly a step between me and death.” Jonathan said he would do anything and tell him know if Saul answered harshly (1 Sam. 20:1-11). Accountability partner seeks your best interests and protects you from harm.

If Saul had good feeling or decided to harm David, Jonathan would share that with him. He made a covenant so David would show lovingkindness to his family when the Lord killed all David’s enemies. Because Jonathan loved David as he loved his life, he made David vow again (1 Sam. 20:12-17). Accountability partner with sacrificial love makes  a covenant for important commitments.

When David stayed away three days, Jonathan would shoot three arrows and say a certain phrase signifying whether there was safety or for Lord to send David away. The agreement Jonathan and David made showed the Lord was between them forever (1 Sam. 20:18-23). Accountability partners' mutual trust in God provides the foundation for their relationship throughout eternity.

When David received news through the arrows that Saul was angry, he fell on his face to the ground and bowed three times. They kissed each other and wept together, but David more (1 Sam. 20:24-42). Accountability partner defends, keeps commitments and advocates spiritually through prayer and relationally before your enemies.

Which of the underlined sentences are most important to you? If you don't have one, ask God to provide an accountability partner.

Accountability Versus Isolation (Insights in Prophets)

We are meant to live life together but most men don’t have transparent relationships with at least one other man. Pride and fear prevent us from going deep with one another. David and Jonathan are positive examples of two men who were accountable to each other and had fun together. This is a major reason why David lived a godly life. In contrast, Saul refused accountability with another man so he lived in isolation. Samuel tried, but pride derailed Saul and he paid the price as we observe in 1 Sam. 18.

Jonathan’s soul was knit to David’s. Because Jonathan loved him as himself, they made a covenant together. Jonathan gave his robe, armor, sword, bow and belt to David. He went wherever Saul sent him and acted wisely. He pleased everyone, including Saul’s servants (1 Sam. 18:1-5).  A strong emotional and accountable relationship with another person strengthens your walk in truth.

When David returned from killing Goliath, women said, “Saul has slain his thousands but David his ten thousands.” After Saul became very angry with evil in his eyes, he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, but to me they have ascribed thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom.” He looked at David with suspicion from that day on (1 Sam. 18:6-9). First, believing a lie causes anger and distrust of others.

On the next day, an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul and he raved in midst of his house. David played the harp and Saul hurled a spear at him and escaped from his presence twice. Saul was afraid of David, for Lord was with him but had departed from Saul. He appointed David as commander of a thousand and dreaded him when he prospered greatly and people loved him (1 Sam. 18:10-16).  Second, jealously of others’ prosperity causes an evil spirit to take control of your life.

Saul deceived David about his daughter becoming married to him. Saul wanted David to be killed by Philistines. Saul became even more afraid of David when he saw Lord was with him and Saul’s daughter loved him. Thus Saul was David’s enemy continually (1 Sam. 18:17-29).  Third, deception, ill-will and fear lead to enmity, disgrace and unreconciled relationships.

Commanders of Philistines went out to battle and David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul. So his name was highly esteemed (1 Sam. 18:30). In contrast, accountable relationships lead to wisdom, esteem and reconciled relationships.

Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety." Don't be a lone ranger.  Find a person of the same sex who accepts you the way you are, but love you too much to allow you to stay the way you are. That’s true friendship.

Find a person to apply these four practical steps to make you accountable:
 a. Vulnerability – the willingness to admit wrong
and to put yourself at risk.
 b. Teachability – a willingness to learn.
 c. Availability – a willingness to make your life
     accessible.
 d. Honesty – a commitment to truth and reality at
      all costs

Transforming Discipleship and Mentoring Ministry (Insights in NT)

Researcher George Barna writes that for years we have been exposing Christians to scattered, random bits of biblical knowledge in our church services and Christian education classes. They hear a principle here and read a truth there, then nod their heads in approval and feel momentarily satisfied after receiving this new insight into their faith. But within the space of just a few hours that principle or truth is lost in the busyness of their lives, because they had never been given a sufficient context and method that would enable them to analyze, categorize and utilize the principle or truth. This inability to systematically apply scriptural truth produces a spiritual superficiality or immaturity that's reflected in behavior. Luke 8 lists the ingredients for a transforming discipleship and mentoring ministry to counteract these dynamics.

The 12 apostles were with Jesus as He proclaimed and preached the kingdom of God in various cities. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, wife of Herod's steward, Susanna and many others healed of evil spirits and sicknesses contributed to their support (served) out of their private means (Lk. 8:1-3). People served with the gospel and healed contribute financially to your ministry.

Jesus spoke a parable of the sower who sowed seed with some falling beside road where birds ate it, other seed fell on rocky soil that withered away because it had no moisture, other seed fell among thorns that grew up and choked it out and other seed fell into good soil and grew up and produced a crop 100 times as great. He who has ears to hear, let him hear (Lk. 8:4-8). Grab people's attention to hear God's word by telling compelling stories or asking provocative questions.

When disciples questioned Jesus what the parable might be, He said it had been granted to them to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God but others couldn't understand the parables. The seed is the word of God.  Those beside the road heard and the devil removed the word from their heart so they couldn't believe and be saved. Those on rocky soil received the word with joy, but with no firm root and temporary belief, they fell away during temptation. The seed that fell among thorns was choked with worries, riches and pleasures of this life, which brought no fruit to maturity (intended perfection or goal). Those with seed in good soil heard the word with a honest and good heart (thoughts, reasonings, understanding, will, judgment, designs, affections, love, hatred, fear, joy, sorrow and anger since these things can actually affect a man's physical heart). They held word fast spiritually and bore fruit with endurance and hope by  not surrendering to circumstances or succumbing under trial (Lk. 8:9-15). Impart thorough grounding from Scripture so people can bear fruit toward spiritual maturity.

No one covers a lamp but puts it on a lampstand so people can see the light since everything will become evident. Whoever has, more will be given and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have shall be taken from him. Jesus said His mothers and brothers hear the word of God and do it (Lk. 8:16-21). Let your light shine as you practice the Word of God.

Jesus and His disciples got into a boat during a great storm saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" Jesus rebuked the wind and the sea became calm. He said, "Where is your faith?" since they were fearful and amazed He commanded the winds and water to obey Him (Lk. 8:22-25). Provide accountability by asking whether you have faith in the storms of life.

A Gerasene demonic cried out in a loud voice to not torment him while acknowledging Jesus as Son of the Most High God. After asking the demon for his name, Jesus gave them permission to enter the swine. When people found the man delivered and in his right mind, they became frightened and asked Jesus to leave. He told the man to describe the great things God did for him (Lk. 8:26-39). Don't let worries, riches and pleasures choke you, but share great things God is doing in your life.

A woman with a hemorrhage for 12 years could not be healed by anyone. She touched the fringe of Jesus' cloak and her hemorrhage stopped immediately. After telling the people the reason why she touched Him and how she had been immediately healed, He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace" (Lk. 8:40-48). Those with faith and a good heart reach out to Jesus in hopeless situations and experience healing.

Jairus, a synagogue official, entreated Jesus to come to his dying daughter. After she died, someone told him his daughter died and not to trouble the Teacher anymore. Jesus heard this and said, "Do not be afraid, only believe, and she shall be made well." When they weeped over the daughter, He said, "Stop weeping, for she has not died, but is asleep." Jesus raised her from the dead after saying, "Child, arise!" (Lk. 8:49-56). God imparts life to impossible and desperate situations.

Here are the key ingredients in establishing a transforming discipleship and mentoring ministry:
1. Trust God to provide financially through those you serve with the Gospel
2. Use compelling stories and provocative questions to grab peoples' attention so they listen to God's word
3. Ground people in the Bible so they grow toward spiritual maturity in the likeness of Christ
4. Teach God's word so people practice and do it
5. Provide accountability by having mentors ask whether you exercise faith in a tough circumstance
6. Have individuals share great things God is doing in their lives
7. Have individuals share the reasons why and how they came to Jesus for healing and freedom in hopeless situations
8. Have individuals share how Jesus imparted life in an impossible or desperate situation

Become part of a small group where you can practice the above eight dynamics. Find a person or mentor where you can encourage each other to practice these dynamics. If you are a church leader, devise a plan where these principles can be embedded in your small group discipleship and mentoring ministry.
