Faith That Makes a Difference (Insights in NT)

John Wesley wrote, "I want the whole Christ for my Saviour, the whole Bible for my book, the whole Church for my fellowship, and the whole world for my mission field." The last two chapters in Acts describes practical faith that makes a difference in individuals, the Church and the world.

Elements of Practical Faith
Paul set sail for Rome with other prisoners and was accompanied by Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica. Paul admonished them when the voyage became dangerous, but the majority decided to sail for Phoenix, a harbor of Crete, to spend the winter. When they had gone without food for many days, Paul said that an angel of God appeared to him to not be afraid since he would appear before Caesar. He told them to be courageous since his belief in God would protect them as he had been told. He also said they must run aground on a certain island" (Acts 27:1-26). The elements of practical faith is trusting God and taking precautions so you don't test Him.

Essence of Practical Faith
Paul said that unless they remained in the ship, they would not be saved. He encouraged them to take food since they had not eaten for 14 days while watching for land. Paul took bread, gave thanks to God in the presence of all, broke it and ate. They were encouraged and took food. All 276 people were brought safely to land (Acts 27:27-44). The essence of practical faith merges the spiritual and physical.

Proof of Practical Faith
The natives showed kindness to them on the island called Malta. Paul shook off a viper that fastened on his hand. When he did not die, the natives said he was a god. The father of Publius, the leading man of the island, was lying in bed with fever and dysentery. Paul prayed, laid his hands on him, and was cured (Acts 28:1-10). The proof of practical faith is physical healing.

Empowerment of Practical Faith
After three months, they sent sail, landed in Puteoli and stayed with some brethren for seven days. When others heard about them, they came from the Market of Appius and Three Inns to meet them. Paul thanked God and took courage (Acts 28:11-15). The empowerment of practical faith is encouraging other believers.

Entry of Practical Faith
When they entered Rome, Paul stayed by himself with a soldier who guarded him. Paul called together the leading men of the Jews saying he did nothing against his people, but was delivered a prisoner from Jerusalem to Rome. They had not received letters from Judea but desired to hear his views concerning this sect spoken against everywhere (Acts 28:16-22). The entry of practical faith looks for open doors so God's word can be shared with others.

Outcome of Practical Faith
Many people came to Paul's lodging from morning to night as he explained the kingdom of God and tried to persuade them concerning Jesus, from the Law and Prophets. When some believed and others did not, Paul spoke through Isaiah: They keep on hearing without understanding and seeing without perceiving. Their dull hearts scarcely hear and see so they can understand and return to God for healing. God sent salvation to the Gentiles so they could listen. When Paul spoke these words, the Jews departed and disputed greatly among themselves. He stayed two years in his rented quarters welcoming all who came to him, preaching the kingdom of God and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness and unhindered (Acts 28:23-31). The outcome of practical faith is preaching the kingdom of God and teaching Jesus openly and unhindered so people are persuaded.

Answer the following questions about practical faith:
1. Are you trusting God and taking precautions so you don't test Him?
2. Are you merging the spiritual and physical in your faith?
3. Are you demonstrating physical healing in your faith?
4. Are you strengthening faith by encouraging other believers?
5. Are you looking for open doors so God's word can be shared?
6. Are you preaching the kingdom of God and teaching Jesus openly and unhindered so individuals, the Church and the world are persuaded?

How to Share Your Personal Testimony (Insights in NT)

"We must win rulers; political, economic, scientific, artistic personalities. They are the engineers of souls. They mold the souls of men. Winning them, you win the people they lead and influence" (Richard Wurmbrand). Because Paul knew that kings influence culture, he shared his personal testimony so they could trust Christ as their Savior. Acts 26 gives a great example on how to share your personal testimony.

The Jews requested a favor against Paul to have him killed on the way to Jerusalem. Festus requested influential men to prosecute Paul if there was anything wrong about him. The Jews brought serious charges against Paul they could not prove. Paul said he committed no offense against the Law, temple or Caesar. He appealed to Caesar saying he would be willing to die if he committed anything worthy of death (Acts 25:1-12). Those opposed to the gospel may seek to harm you or bring charges they can't prove.

Festus told King Agrippa that the Jews had points of disagreement about their own religion and concerning Jesus who Paul said was alive. When King Agrippa said he would like to hear Paul, Festus brought him to the Emperor (Acts 25:13-27). Bold witnesses seek every opportunity to share the gospel, even to people of influence when it is uncomfortable.

Paul said he was glad to make his defense before King Agrippa since he was an expert about Jewish customs and questions. Paul said he lived as a Pharisee and stood trial "for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers." He asked why it seemed incredible if God raised the dead. Paul admitted doing many things hostile to the name of Jesus by locking Christians in prisons, casting his vote to put them to death and pursuing them in foreign cities (Acts 26:1-11). Bold witnesses share briefly about their lives before trusting Christ.

On his way to Damascus, Paul saw a bright light from heaven and heard a voice asking why he was persecuting Him. After asking, 'Who art Thou, Lord?' the Lord said, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting'. . . . to appoint him as a minister and witness of what he saw and appear to him being delivered from the Jews and Gentiles 'to whom I am sending you, to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the domain of Satan to God, in order that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me' (Acts 26:12-18). Bold witnesses share how they trusted Christ so people know what to believe.

Paul told King Agrippa he was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but kept declaring to those in Damascus, Jerusalem, Judea and the Gentiles that they should repent, turn to God and perform deeds appropriate to repentance. He spoke what the Prophets and Moses said would take place, that Christ would suffer and be the first to proclaim light to the Jews and Gentiles after His resurrection (Acts 26:19-23). Bold witnesses share how their life changed after trusting Christ.

Festus said loudly that Paul's learning was driving him mad. He asked King Agrippa if he believed the Prophets. He said in a short time that Paul would persuade him to become a Christian. Paul said he hoped all listening become like him except for the chains (Acts 26:24-29). Bold witnesses ask people to believe in Christ.

King Agrippa said Paul did nothing worthy of death or imprisonment. He said that might have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar (Acts 26:30-32). Bold witnesses are willing to suffer consequences so they can share their faith.

1. Write down and practice sharing your personal testimony including your life before Christ, how you came to know Christ and how your life changed afterward

2. Ask God to lead you to people where you can share your testimony of Christ
3. Ask for boldness and be available to share your testimony with people of influence

Living as Martyr for Christ (Insights in NT)

"Every one of them can be a witness for Christ, not only with his lips but by his whole life. Every Christian ought to be a living martyr, who lives for the sake of his Master" (Sadhu Sundar Singh). Paul is a great example of living as a martyr for Christ. Whatever happened, he maximized the opportunities to share the gospel with others.

Paul told the Council that he lived with a good conscience before God. When the high priest Ananias commanded Paul to be struck on the mouth, Paul said that act violated the Law. He cried out to the Council that he was a Pharisee on trial for the "hope and resurrection of the dead!" after realizing he was being tried by both Sadducees and Pharisees. Sadducees believed in no resurrection and the Pharisees determined there was nothing wrong with Paul as dissension increased (Acts 23:1-10). Be wise as serpent and innocent as a dove as you boldly proclaim the gospel.

On the night following, the Lord said to Paul that he should witness courageously at Rome as he did in Jerusalem (Acts 23:11). Follow God's leading where and when to share the gospel.

More than 40 Jews conspired to kill Paul. His nephew warned him of the plot and the commander wrote a letter to Felix the governor to have Paul moved to Caesarea so accusers could bring charges before him (Acts 23:12-35). People seek to harm those who boldly share the gospel.

After five days, the high priest Ananias, elders and an attorney named Tertullus brought charges against Paul. Tertullus said he was a real pest stirring dissension among Jews throughout the world who tried to desecrate the temple (Acts 24:1-9). People accuse those of stirring dissension who boldly share the gospel.

Paul said he did not cause a riot and his accusers could not prove their charges. He admitted that he served the God of his fathers according to the Way they called a sect, believing everything in the Law and Prophets concerning a resurrection of both the righteous and wicked. He maintained a blameless conscience before God and men being on trial for the resurrection of the dead (Acts 24:10-21). Believe God's word with a blameless conscience as you continue sharing God's word boldly.

Felix kept him in custody and allowed friends to minister to Paul. Felix's wife heard Paul speak about faith in Christ Jesus. Felix became frightened when Paul discussed righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come. Felix conversed with Paul frequently. After two years, Felix was succeeded by Festus and left Paul imprisoned to do the Jews a favor (Acts 24:22-27). God opens doors to share the gospel with people of influence.

Are you wise in your sharing of the gospel?
Do you follow God's lead in sharing the gospel?
Are you unconcerned about the consequences when you share the gospel?
Do you believe God's word with a clear conscience?
Do you see God open doors for the gospel?

Illustration of Radical Obedience to Christ (Insights in NT)

“Radical obedience to Christ is not easy... It's not comfort, not health, not wealth, and not prosperity in this world. Radical obedience to Christ risks losing all these things. But in the end, such risk finds its reward in Christ. And he is more than enough for us.” (David Platt). Paul illustrates radical obedience to Christ in Acts 21-22.

After landing by ship in Tyre, Paul stayed seven days with the disciples. He prayed with them, said goodbye and boarded the ship. In Caesarea, a prophet named Agabus predicted  that the Jews would bound Paul and deliver him to the Gentiles. Paul said he was ready to die in Jerusalem for the name of Christ. His friends said, "The will of the Lord be done!" (Acts 21:1-14). Deny yourself and take up your cross in spite of the consequences.

Paul related to James and the elders what God did among the Gentiles through his ministry. They said that the Jews coming to know Christ were told by Paul to forsake Moses and not circumcise their children. After Paul purified himself with four men as instructed by James and the elders, he went into the temple notifying them that his purification was complete until the sacrifice was offered (Acts 21:15-26). Become all things to all men so you can win them to Christ.

The Jews from Asia stirred up the multitude and beat Paul until the commander and soldiers came. He told the commander that he was a Jew of Tarsus and asked if he could speak to the people (Acts 21:27-40). Persevere under persecution for the sake of Christ.

Paul addressed the Jews in the Hebrew dialect and said he was brought up in Jerusalem educated under Gamaliel. put people to death and into prison. As he approached Damascus, a bright light flashed from heaven and a voice said to him, "Saul, Saul, why are persecuting Me?" He learned it was Jesus the Nazarene. Paul received his sight with Ananias present. He said Paul was appointed to know His will and be a witness to all men of what He saw and heard. After being baptized and having his sins washed away, Paul returned to Jerusalem. The Lord told him to leave since they would not accept his testimony as he approved of Stephen's stoning. The Lord said he would send him far away to the Gentiles (Acts 22:1-21). Share your testimony boldly to those who need to hear the gospel message.

People wanted to kill Paul and the commander brought him into the barracks. As they stretched him with thongs, Paul asked a centurion if it was lawful to scourge a Roman who was uncondemned.  The commander let him go after finding out he was a Roman. Wishing to know why had been accused by the Jews, he ordered the chief priest and Council to assemble before Paul (Acts 22:22-30). Stand up for your rights as a citizen to continue sharing the gospel.

Repent of your lukewarmness and ask God to give you radical obedience to Him in sharing the gospel with others.

Ingredients for An Effective Evangelism and Discipleship Team (Insights in NT)

Working in the church used to mean performing one's gift in the world whether it was at home, at work or in the mission field. Now it means a religious act performed within a building called the church. In the book of Acts, everyone was a missionary involved in the work of the church. Today, we have delegated this job to full-time vocation workers called clergy. Eph. 4:11-13 says certain gifts like pastor-teacher equip people to be involved in the ministry. All of us need to be involved. Paul is a case example of someone who mobilized and equipped workers for the harvest field. Acts 19-20 explains the ingredients for an effective evangelism and discipleship team.

Paul learned that the disciples in Ephesus had been baptized into John's baptism of repentance before believing in Christ. When they heard about the Holy Spirit, they were baptized in the name of Jesus. About 12 men began speaking in tongues and prophesying after the Holy Spirit came upon them (Acts 19:1-7). Supply the missing pieces in peoples' understanding and application of God's word.

For three months in the synagogues, Paul reasoned and persuaded people boldly about the kingdom of God. When some spoke evil of the Way, he took the disciples to the school of Tyrannus and reasoned daily with them. For two years, all the Jews and Greeks who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord. God performed miracles through Paul with diseases and evil spirits leaving. Some Jewish exorcists tried to mimic Paul, but evil spirits overpowered them so they left naked and wounded. Many believed, confessed and disclosed their practices and burned their magic books in the sight of all. The word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed (Acts 19:8-20). Teach and show evidence of the kingdom of God so His word grows and prevails.

Paul passed through Macedonia and Achaia, purposed to go to Jerusalem and later saw Rome. Timothy and Erastus who ministered to him were sent into Macedonia while Paul stayed in Asia for a while (Acts 19:21-22). Follow God's leadership with your team ministering to one another.

Demetrius brought much business to the craftsmen who made the silver shrines of Artemis. He saw Paul as a threat to their prosperity because people were coming to Christ in Ephesus and Asia causing the temple of Artemis to be regarded as worthless. The town clerk cooled the riot after Paul's traveling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus, were dragged and a crowd shorted for two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" (Acts 19:23-41). Realize that society views the gospel as a threat when people apply God's word.

After the uproar, Paul exhorted the disciples in Ephesus and Macedonia before coming to Greece. When a plot was formed against him by the Jews, he determined to return through Macedonia with Sopater of Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, Gaius of Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. They had gone ahead and waited for Paul's team at Troas (Acts 20:1-6). Train a working team of ambassadors from various cities who can teach and spread God's word together.

On the first day of the week when they gathered together to break bread, he extended his message until midnight. A boy fell to his death after sleeping, but Paul raised him to life through God's power. He talked with them until daybreak. Paul decided to sail past Ephesus so he could be in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost (Acts 20:7-16). Maximize  your time to teach and disciple others.

From Miletus, Paul told the Ephesian elders that he served the Lord with humility, tears and trials through the plots of the Jews. He always declared what was was profitable, taught publicly and from house to house repentance toward God and faith in Christ. Paul sacrificed his life to finish his course and the ministry he received from Christ of testifying of God's grace, preaching the kingdom and not hesitating to  declare the whole will of God. He told the elders to be on guard for themselves and the flock since the Holy Spirit made them overseers to shepherd the church of God bought with His own blood. Because savage wolves from among them would distort the truth drawing disciples after them, be on guard like Paul who never stopped warning them night and day for three years. He committed them to God and the word of His grace to build and give them an inheritance among all who were sanctified. He coveted no one's money, worked hard to fund himself and his team and helped the weak as it's more blessed to give than receive. He prayed and they wept together grieving they would not see Paul again (Acts 20:17-38). Teach from the whole Bible to prevent distortion of truth and deception from false teachers.

Consider if your church or ministry teams are aligned with the following ingredients for effective evangelism and discipleship:
1. Our team supplies the missing pieces in peoples' understanding and application of God's word

2. Our team teaches and shows evidence of the kingdom of God so His word grows and prevails
3. Our team follows God's leadership with each member  ministering to one another
4. Our team realizes that society views the gospel as a threat when people apply God's word
5. Our team trains a working team of ambassadors from various cities who can teach and spread God's word together
6. Our team maximizes their time to teach and disciple others
7. Our team teaches from the whole Bible to prevent distortion of truth and deception from false teachers

Importance of Teaching God's Word (Insights in NT)

5/23/2012

Picture
Dan Buttafuoco, president of the Historical Bible Society, specified five primary reasons to read the Bible:
1. The Bible has transformed the world
2. People are willing to die for this book
3. It's the most accurate book of antiquity
4. It contains a life-changing message of freedom
5. It connects you to history's most important figure
Acts 17-18 shows the importance of teaching God's word after one evangelizes (Acts 16).

In Thessalonica, Paul reasoned with Jews from the Scriptures for three Sabbaths. After he explained and gave evidence that Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, many God-fearing Jews and leading women were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas. Jealous Jews and wicked men from the marketplace formed a mob and set the city in an uproar (Acts 17:1-9). Explain and give evidence from the Bible so people can believe in Christ.

The brothers sent Paul and Silas to Berea where they went to a synagogue of the Jews. They were more noble-minded that those in Thessalonica as they received the word with great eagerness examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. Many believed including prominent Greek women and men. Jews from Thessalonica stirred the crowds when they found that Paul was proclaiming the word in Berea. Paul was sent to Athens so Silas and Timothy could join him later (Acts 17:10-15). Examine the Bible daily to determine whether the word is being taught correctly.

Paul’s spirit was provoked when he saw Athens filled with idols, but reasoned every day with Jews and God-fearing Gentiles in both the synagogue and the marketplace. Some philosophers brought Paul to the Areopagus after hearing him preach  a new thing about Jesus and the resurrection. Paul commended their religious nature and said God created and gave life to all things while referencing an inscription on an altar, 'TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ God determines peoples' appointed times and where they live so they could seek and find Him. God calls everyone to repent since we are His offspring and not a material object. He will judge the world in righteousness through Jesus who God raised from the dead (Acts 17:16-31). Seek common ground before relating the truth of Jesus and the resurrection.

Some who heard of the resurrection of the dead sneered and others said they would listen again. Some men believed including Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damarisa (Acts 17:32-34). Expect positive and negative responses to the teaching of the gospel.

In Corinth, Paul worked as a tent-maker with Aquila and Priscilla. Paul reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath trying to persuade Jews and Greeks. When Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself completely to the word testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ. When they resisted, he decided to go to the Gentiles. He entered the home of Titius Justus, a worshiper of God, and Cripus, the synagogue leader, who believed with his household along with many Corinthians that were baptized. The Lord told Paul in a vision not to fear but continue speaking since God would be with him. He taught the word of God for a year and six months (Acts 18:1-11). Give priority to speaking the word of God without fear to impact families.

The Jews rose up against Paul and brought him before Gallio, proconsul of Achaia, who refused to judge him because no crime was committed. The beat Sosthenes, the synagogue leader, but Gallio showed no concern. Paul left Priscilla and Aquila in Ephesus. He entered the synagogue, set sail from Ephesus, landed in Caesarea, greeted the church and went down to Antioch. Having spent some time there, he passed through the Galatian region and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples (Acts 18:12-23). Spend much time strengthening Christ's disciples in the word of God.

Apollos, an eloquent man mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, fervent in spirit, teaching accurately about Jesus, but only acquainted with John's baptism. Priscilla and Aquila explained to him God's way more accurately. In Achaia, Apollos helped greatly those who believed through grace by powerfully refuting the Jews in public demonstrating from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ (Acts 18:24-28). Help people learn God's word more accurately so they can lead others to Christ.

Which of the following applications in teaching God's word do you want to focus:
1.  Explain and give evidence from the Bible so people can believe in Christ

2.  Examine the Bible daily to determine whether the word is being taught correctly
3.  Seek common ground before relating the truth of Jesus and the resurrection
4.  Expect positive and negative responses to the teaching of the gospel
5.  Give priority to speaking the word of God without fear to impact families
6.  Spend much time strengthening Christ's disciples in the word of God
7.  Help people learn God's word more accurately so they can lead others to Christ

Example of How to Evangelize (Insights in NT)

"Whatever you do, wherever you live, if you belong to Jesus Christ, the call from heaven has come to you to the highest honour a human being can experience. The Son of God is spreading His love, His lifestyle, and His life-saving message across this planet and you know what? He has summoned you to join Him in His glorious Administration. Don't settle for anything less" (Ron Hutchcraft). A great example of how to evangelize and be an ambassador in Christ is found in Acts 16.

Paul took Timothy and circumcised him because of the Jews since everyone knew his father was a Greek. As they passed through the cities, they delivered the decrees from the apostles and elders in Jerusalem. So the churches were strengthened in faith and increasing in number daily (Acts 16:1-5). The grace gospel of Christ strengthens peoples' faith and causes new birth growth.

They were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia and the Spirit did not permit them to go into Bithynia. In Troas, a vision appeared to Paul of a man in Macedonia asking them to come and help. He immediately sought to go into Macedonia concluding God had called them to preach the gospel there (Acts 16:6-10). The Holy Spirit leads you to people to evangelize with the gospel of Christ.

The stayed for some time in Philippi, a leading city of Macedonia, a Roman colony. Outside the gate, they looked for place of prayer and spoke to the women assembled. Lydia, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, listened as the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul. After she and her household were baptized, they stayed in her house (Acts 16:11-15). Be available to people where you can share the gospel message.

A slave-girl with a spirit of divination brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. For many days, she cried out that Paul's company were bond-servants of the Most High God. Paul commanded the spirit in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her (Acts 16:16-18). Pray in the name of Jesus Christ that He defeats opposition to the preaching of the gospel message.

With her master's hope of profit gone, they dragged Paul and Silas into the marketplace before the authorities. They accused them of causing confusion in the city and proclaiming unlawful customs they could not accept as Romans. The authorities beat them with rods, threw them into prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns of praise to God with the prisoners listening. A great earthquake opened the prison house doors and unfastened everyone's chains. Paul told the jailer not to kill himself who trembled with fear asking, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" Telling he and his household to believe in the Lord Jesus to be saved, Paul spoke the word of the Lord to them. The jailer rejoiced greatly having believed in God with his whole household (Acts 16:19-34). Preach the gospel when God opens the door.

Paul demanded the chief magistrates to bring them out of prison since they as Roman citizens were beaten in public without trial. After the officials begged them to leave the city, they entered Lydia's house and encouraged the brethren (Acts 16:35-40). Follow-up those who believe in Christ by teaching and encouraging them in the faith.

Consider the following truths:
1. Only the grace gospel of Christ strengthens peoples' faith and causes new birth growth.
2.  The Holy Spirit leads you to people to evangelize with the gospel of Christ.
3.  Be available to people where you can share the gospel message.
4. Pray in the name of Jesus Christ that He defeats opposition to the preaching of the gospel message.
5. Preach the gospel when God opens the door.
6. Follow-up those who believe in Christ by teaching and encouraging them in the faith.

Sustaining the Work of Preaching the Gospel (Insights in NT)

The mechanics of preaching the gospel involves the following:
1. Begins with reliance upon God
2. Causes people to walk after living, Creator God
3.  Shows believers miracles of conversion to be encouraged to walk through tribulations
To sustain the work of preaching the gospel, good theology and equipping believers is necessary as follows:
1. Begin with the pure doctrine of grace without works
2. Energized by the free gift of God through the Holy Spirit for anyone who believes in Christ
3. Founded upon the foundation of Old Testament promises
4. Taught good theology of grace to other Christians
5. Expanded by encouraging and strengthening others to join you in the work
6. Followed God's direction for right ministry partner

Mechanics in Preaching the Gospel
Paul and Barnabas spoke in such a manner that many Jews and Greeks believed in a Iconium synagogue. The disbelieving Jews stirred up the minds of the Gentiles against the brothers. They spent a long time speaking boldly with reliance upon the Lord with signs and wonders bearing witness to the word. The city was divided and after being  mistreated, they fled to the surrounding region and continued preaching the gospel (Acts 14:1-7). Preaching the gospel faithfully with reliance upon God produces miracles and persecution.

A lame man began walking after Paul cried out when he saw his faith to be made well. Paul and Barnabas said they were just men who preached the gospel so people could turn from vain things to a living, creator God after the multitude called them by the name of their gods. They said God permitted nations to go their own ways but still gave witness by providing rains and fruitful seasons (Acts 14:8-18). Preaching the gospel causes people to walk after a living, Creator God instead of vain things.

The Jews from Antioch and Iconium stoned and dragged Paul out of the city. The next day, he and Barnabas preached the gospel in Derbe, made many disciples and returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch strengthening the souls of the disciples while encouraging them to continue in the faith through many tribulations to enter the kingdom of God. They appointed elders in every church having prayed with fasting and commending them to the Lord. They reported to the church in Antioch of how God opened a door of faith to the Gentiles and spent a long time with the disciples (Acts 14:19-28). Preaching the gospel shows disciples how God opens the door of faith to unbelievers so they can walk through tribulations.

Theology in Preaching the Gospel
Some men from Judea taught that you must be circumcised according to Moses to be saved. After Paul and Barnabas  debated them, the brethren decided they should go to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders concerning this issue. Both on their way to Jerusalem and after they got there, they described in detail the conversion of the Gentiles and all God did with them. Certain Pharisees said one must observe circumcision and the Law of Moses (Acts 15:1-5). Preaching the gospel requires the pure doctrine of grace without works.

After much debate among the apostles and elders, Peter said  God used his mouth so the Gentiles could hear the gospel, believe and receive the Holy Spirit. Since God made no distinction between Jew and Gentile cleansing their hearts by faith, why would you place a yoke upon them since everyone is saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus (Acts 15:6-11). Preaching the gospel demands no distinction since anyone who believes Christ receives the Holy Spirit.

After the multitude listened to Barnabas and Paul relate the signs and wonders God did through them among the Gentiles, James shared how the Prophets wrote that God will rebuild the tabernacle of David so the Gentiles may seek the Lord. James also said they should not trouble the Gentiles who turned to God but urged them to only "abstain from things contaminated by idols and from fornication and from what is strangled and from blood" (Acts 15:12-21). Preaching the gospel is built upon the foundation of the God's promises in the Old Testament.

Equipping in Preaching the Gospel
It seemed good to the apostles, elders and whole church to choose Silas and Judas to go along with Paul and  Barnabas to Antioch. They sent a letter to the brethren in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia from among the Gentiles saying that it "seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than the essentials James suggested" (Acts 15:22-29). Preaching the gospel involves teaching other Christians good theology about God's grace.

When the congregation at Antioch heard the letter, they rejoiced because of its encouragement. The prophets, Judas and Silas, encouraged and strengthened the brethren with the latter remaining there. Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch with many others teaching and preaching the word of the Lord (Acts 15:30-35). Preaching the gospel involves encouraging and strengthening others to join with you in the work.

Paul said to Barnabas that they should visit the brethren in every city where they proclaimed the word  to see how they are. Paul and Barnabas separated from one another because the latter wanted to take John Mark. Paul said no because Mark deserted them in Pamphylia. Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus, but Paul chose Silas and he traveled through Syria and Cilicia strengthening the churches (Acts 15:36-41). Preaching the gospel involves following God's direction for the right ministry partner.

Which of the following mechanics of preaching the gospel encourages or challenges you the most?

Blueprint for World-Changing Ministry (Insights in NT)

There are but two essential requirements: First: has anyone cheated death and proved it? Second: Is it available to me? Here is the complete record: Confucius' tomb - occupied. Buddha's tomb - occupied. Mohammad's tomb - occupied. Jesus' tomb - empty. Argue as you will. There is no point in following a loser (G. B. Hardy). Acts 13 provides the blueprint for a world-changing ministry.

The church at Antioch had prophets and teachers including Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene and Manaen who was brought up with Herod and Saul. While they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work He called them. They fasted, prayed, laid their hands and sent them away (Acts 13:1-3). The Holy Spirit leads a multi-racial elder team toward gospel mission through prayer and fasting.

They were sent by the Holy Spirit and proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of Cyprus with John as their helper. A false prophet opposed them seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith as he wanted to hear the word of God. Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, said the false prophet was full of deceit and fraud making crooked the straight ways of God. The false prophet became blind and the proconsul believed when he saw what happened being amazed at the teaching of the Lord (Acts 13:4-12). Declaring truth through prayer defeats evil spirits so people can believe the gospel.

Paul and his companions came to Perga in Pamphylia and John returned to Jerusalem. On the Sabbath in Pisidian Antioch, the synagogue officials invited Paul to speak. He explained how God led Israel out of Egypt, put them in the wilderness 40 years, destroyed seven nations in Canaan, distributed their land as an inheritance in 450 years and gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. After asking for a king, God gave them Saul for 40 years and raised up David, a man after His heart who would do His will. From his offspring according to promise, God brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, after John proclaimed a baptism of repentance. Those who did not recognize God or the prophets put Jesus to death, but God raised Him from the dead and He appeared to many witnesses. The apostles preached the good news of God's promise in raising up Jesus in contrast to David who died and underwent decay after he served the purpose of God in his generation. Through Jesus' forgiveness of sin is proclaimed so everyone who believes is justified, which is impossible through the Law of Moses (Acts 13:13-41). Proclaiming the historical message of the Bible enables people to understand the gospel.

People begged Paul and Barnabas to speak these things the next Sabbath. Since many of the Jews and God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, they urged them to continue in the grace of God (Acts 13:42-43). Presenting the Bible chronologically creates spiritual hunger so people embrace the grace of God.

At the next Sabbath, nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of God. The Jews were filled with jealousy and began contradicting what Paul said. Since they rejected the word, Paul turned to the Gentiles since the Lord placed him as a light to bring salvation to the end of the earth. They rejoiced, glorified the word of the Lord and those appointed to eternal life believed. The word spread through the whole region. The Jews aroused women of prominence and leading men of the city in persecuting Paul and Barnabas to drive them out of the area. They went to Iconium and the disciples were continually filled with joy and the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:44-52). The gospel spreads through Spirit-filled disciples in the midst of persecution.

Here are questions to ask yourself for involvement in a world-changing ministry:
1. Are you involved or submitted to an elder team seeking direction from the Holy Spirit?
2. Are you declaring the truth through prayer when God opens up opportunities to share the gospel?
3. Have you been equipped to the proclaim the historical message of the Bible so people can understand the gospel?
4. Are you presenting the Bible chronologically to create spiritual hunger so people embrace the grace of God?
5. Are you equipping and mentoring Spirit-filled disciples in the midst of persecution so the gospel can spread?

Break the Chains of the Evil One Through United Prayer (Insights in NT)

Ole Kristian O. Hallesby wrote, "Listen, my friend! Your helplessness is your best prayer. It calls from your heart to the heart of God with greater effect than all your uttered pleas. He hears it from the very moment that you are seized with helplessness, and He becomes actively engaged at once in hearing and answering the prayer of your helplessness." God's word multiplies in breaking the chains of the evil one through united prayer.

Cornelius, a centurion, prayed to God continually. An angel said his prayers ascended as a memorial before God and told him to send men to Joppa to get Peter (Acts 10:1-8). God answers prayer and speaks to an unbeliever who seeks God.

As they approached Joppa, Peter was praying on the housetop. While in a trance, he saw the sky open up and a object like a great sheet coming down containing animals. A voice said to kill and eat but Peter replied that had never eaten anything unholy and unclean. A second time, the voice said to no longer consider unholy what God has cleansed. After this occurred three times, the object went up into the sky (Acts 10:9-16). God speaks to expand your paradigm in ministry.

While perplexed about the vision, the Spirit said three men were looking for him. The men explained to Peter that Cornelius was directed by a holy angel to come and hear a message from him. He told Cornelius that even though it was unlawful to associate with a foreigner, God showed him to not call any man unholy or unclean. Cornelius explained with relatives and close friends present how God instructed him to send for Peter and then asked to hear all that God commanded him to say (Acts 10:17-33). God arranges circumstances so the right person shares the gospel with someone ready to hear.

Peter said he learned that God shows no partiality, but any man who fears God and does what is right is welcome to Him. He preached peace through Jesus who God anointed with the Holy Spirit, power, doing good and healing everyone oppressed by the devil. Peter said he witnessed Jesus being put to death on a cross, raised up on the third day and made visible to witnesses chosen by God. Jesus ordered them to preach to the people so anyone who believed in Him received forgiveness of sin (Acts 10:34-43). Those who witness Jesus healing the oppressed preach the gospel boldly so people receive forgiveness of sin.

The circumcised believers were amazed that the Holy Spirit fell on those listening to the message. They heard them speaking in tongues and exalting God. Peter ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. They asked him to stay for a few days (Acts 10:44-48). Those who believe the gospel get baptized.

Herod had James the brother of John put to death and arrested Peter. While he was in prison, the church prayed fervently for him. An angel appeared, light shone in the cell, his chains fell off and the gate opened into the city with Peter following. When he realized his rescue, Peter went to the house of Mary, the mother of Mark, where many were praying. He described how the Lord led him out of prison (Acts 12:1-17). Fervent united prayer breaks the chains of the evil one.

When Herod could not find Peter, he ordered the guards to be executed. He went to Caesarea angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon. Herod delivered an address and the people kept crying out, "The voice of a god and not of a man!" An angel struck him because he did not give God glory and was eaten by worms and died (Acts 12:18-23). Self-seeking and glorifying yourself and not giving God glory destroys and kills you.

The word of the Lord continued to grow and be multiplied. Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem where they fulfilled their mission taking along Mark (Acts 12:24-25). God's word grows and multiplies when people pray and preach the power of Jesus.

What would happen if you joined with others in praying that the chains of the evil one be broken?

My goal is to ignite the hearts of people by explaining God's word in the Law, Prophets, Psalms and New Testament consecutively, much like the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:32,44). I have been a missionary in Lincoln, NE, for 13 years with Christ For the City Int. and Sync with God.

Sync with God is a highly versatile web app that hosts on-demand, virtual small groups. Sync is designed to connect young seekers in the faith and scripturally-trained mentors, even globally. It offers a safe, engaging interface for Millennials/Gen. Z and is readily adaptable to technical advances well into the future.
