Progression to Possess Your Community with God's Glory (Insights in Law)

The preceding chapters in Numbers 17-19 show the first step toward community transformation begins with yourself. Pray for more passionate love for Christ personally and among other believers in your community. Follow God's leading so you embrace His calling for your life. Give generously to your local church and kingdom projects. Spend regular time in confessing sin. Encourage others to walk in holiness.  Then you are in position to rely completely on His power and surrender every provision for God's use.  God sends the power of the Holy Spirit for deliverance and healing when you look to Him in faith. Finally you can  pray in the power of the Holy Spirit. Numbers 20-21 explain this progression to possess your community with God's glory.

When Miriam died there and no water was found for the congregation, they quarreled against Moses and Aaron asking why they had been brought into the wilderness to die. God's glory appeared to Moses and Aaron when they came to the doorway of tent of meeting and fell on their faces. God told Moses to take the rod and speak to the rock before their eyes so it would yield water. Moses said, “Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?” He struck the rock twice with his rod and water came forth abundantly. Because Moses did not believe and treat God as holy in the sight of Israel, he could not bring them into the land. God proved Himself holy among them (Num. 20:1-13). Leaders must treat God as holy before others in obedience knowing the end does not justify the means.

The king of Edom refused to let Israel could pass through his land from Kadesh along the king’s highway. The Lord said that Aaron could not enter the land because he rebelled against His command. After his garments were put on his son Eleazar, Aaron died on the mountain top (Num. 20:14-29). Rely completely on the power of God instead of unbelief or trusting self to prevent spiritual and physical death.

The Canaanite king of Arad fought against Israel and took some of them captive. Israel vowed that if God delivered them into their hand, they would totally destroy their cities. The Lord listened and delivered up the Canaanites so they could destroy them (Num. 21:1-3). God demands total surrender of every provision for His use.

When they set out to go around Edom, the people became impatient because of the journey. People complained against Moses about no food or water and loathing "this miserable food.” The Lord sent fiery serpents and many people died from the bites. When the people admitted their sin, Moses interceded and made a bronze serpent set on a standard so everyone who was bitten could look at it and live (Num. 21:4-9). God delivers and heals when you look to Him in faith.

Assemble the people so God could give them water. Israel sang a song that exalted a well that the leaders dug and established with staffs (Num. 21:10-20). God sends the power of the Holy Spirit to provide for you.

Israel asked Sihon, king of the Amorites, if they could pass through his land and remain on the king’s highway without drinking water from their wells. When Sihon refused, Israel defeated and took possession of the land from the Arnon to the Jabbok. Israel took and lived in all the Amorite cities in Heshbon, which was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who formerly devoured Ar of Moab. Moses spied out Jazer and dispossessed the Amorites living there. The Lord said to Moses not to fear the king of Bashan. God would give him into his hand and possess their land (Num. 21:21-35). Use spiritual weapons of prayer to possess your community with God’s glory instead of relying on the world’s resources.

Ask God to lead you through the progression to possess your  community with God's glory:
1. Leaders must treat God as holy before others in obedience knowing the end does not justify the means
2. Rely completely on the power of God instead of unbelief or trusting self to prevent spiritual and physical death
3. God demands total surrender of every provision for His use

4. God delivers and heals when you look to Him in faith
5.  God sends the power of the Holy Spirit to provide for you
6. Use spiritual weapons of prayer to possess your community with God’s glory instead of relying on the world’s resources

Establish God's Reign On Earth Through Community Weaving (Insights in Prophets)

If God's creation is so magnificent, His word must be glorious also because when He spoke, everything was made (Ps. 19:1-6; Gen. 1:1-27). It's perfect and complete. God's word is the divine standard or owner's manual showing how to get the most out of life. No other book or resource can compare with the Bible in its reliability to share practical wisdom for daily living (Ps. 19:7). Nothing on earth is more desirable or reaps greater reward than obeying God's word (Ps. 19:10-11). It's better than gold and sweeter than honey. When Jonathan battled the Philistines, he learned that honey (or God's word) leads to successful establishment of God's reign on earth through community weaving.

Community Weaving mobilizes people to sign up on a good neighbors website. The technology allows people to self-organize into teams where everyone shares their time, skills, interests, talents, experiences and resources to meet people at their point of need, just as Jesus did in His ministry. In addition, local churches, schools, community organizations and businesses can list social, recreational, educational and spiritual activities in connecting people to good neighbors and their networks, which helps all social sectors work collaboratively to improve life in our cities.

King Saul's son, Jonathan, told the young man carrying his armor to cross over to the Philistine’s garrison. But Jonathan didn’t tell his father. Saul and 600 men stayed in the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree. Leaders consulted an ephod for direction from God, but the people didn’t know Jonathan had left. He went to the Philistines through two sharp crags on the north opposite Michmash and south opposite Geba (1 Sam. 14:1-5). One spiritual leader leads the way for implementing community weaving in a city as he or she leaves the walls of the church, overcomes obstacles and engages the various cultural sectors.

Jonathan, having faith in God's will regarding the Philistines, told his armor bearer to cross over to the garrison of uncircumcised since the Lord can work with just a few men.  The armor bearer reaffirmed his support and  submitted to Jonathan’s desires. After a positive sign of receptivity, they revealed themselves to the Philistines who said, “Behold, Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden themselves.” Jonathan was confident of the Lord’s victory. He killed 20 men by climbing up on his hands and feet with his armor bearer behind him. The garrison and raiders trembled and the earth quaked (1 Sam. 14:6-15). One leader with prayer covering him or her, establishes a beachhead in launching community weaving in his or her city.

Saul’s watchmen in Gibeah saw the multitude melt away in defeat. Everyone, including Saul, responded to Jonathan’s leadership by engaging in battle in the midst of great confusion. Deserters and those hidden in the hill country of Ephraim joined the Israelites in warfare. The Lord delivered Israel and the battle spread beyond Beth-aven (1 Sam. 14:16-23). Initial success encourages others to sign up as good neighbors in meeting real needs.

Saul unwisely made an oath so people couldn't taste food until he avenged himself from his enemies. People became weary because of fear and not eating honey. Jonathan wasn't informed about the oath so he ate honey. As a result, his eyes brightened. Jonathan told one person that the slaughter of the Philistines would be much greater if people ate honey (1 Sam. 14:24-30). Community weaving is hindered by legalism and fear, but the platform for establishing self-organized teams will be strengthened as people feed on God’s word.

People rushed greedily upon the spoil by killing sheep, oxen and calves. They told Saul that the people sinned against God by eating animals with the blood (Lev. 17:10-14). Saul encouraged them to eat meat without blood. Saul then built his first altar to the Lord (1 Sam. 14:31-35). Feeding on God’s word prevents people from sinning so they will persevere in community weaving.

When Saul urged the people to kill the Philistines by night, the priest said to draw near to God. God didn’t answer Saul when he asked whether to attack. Casting lots revealed that Jonathan violated Saul’s foolish oath, which caused people to sin. The people objected when Saul said Jonathan must die. They rescued him from Saul since they credited Jonathan's partnership with God for deliverance over the Philistines (1 Sam. 14:36-46). Community weaving efforts expand greatly when God's people draw near to Him.

When Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he inflicted punishment or fought against his enemies’ evil lifestyle (Heb. Rasha), including Moab, Ammon, Edom, kings of Zobah and the Philistines.

Rasha is defined as “negative behavior from evil thoughts, words, and deeds that are contrary to God’s character and hostile to the human family. Because of this inner disharmony and unrest, social relationships of all types will be ruptured. . . . People with this characteristic are guilty of violating the social rights of others through oppression, greed, exploitation, murder, dishonesty, in business and twisting justice. . . . Only through true repentance, confession and prayer can it be reversed.”

Saul acted valiantly, defeating the Amalekites, delivering  Israel from those who plundered them (1 Sam. 14:47-48).  The goal of community weaving is social justice, unconditional love and harmony in every aspect of life.

Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Mal-chi-shua and two daughters, Merab and Michal. His wife was Ahinoam and captain of his army was Abner.  War against the Philistines was severe during the time of Saul. He gathered any mighty man he saw to his staff (1 Sam. 14:49-52).  Weaving the fabric of community to save our children's future requires a partnership of mighty men and women.

Honey or God's word is like wisdom for the soul to maintain your future and hope (Prov. 24:13-14).

Successful Community Weaving Implementation Requires the Following People in a City:
 1.  Convener who meets with social sector leaders to gauge community readiness.
 2.  Endorser who leads a call to action to launch Community Weaving in the city.
 3. Coordinator who creates long-term sustainability of Community Weaving.
 4. Network of many Good Neighbors, Family Advocates and Community Weavers in each city.

Need, Calling and Power for Community Ministry (Insights in Psalms)

I just back from a vision tour of Christ For the City's (CFCI) ministries in Costa Rica, the reason for not writing a blog post this past week. One of CFCI's projects is "Transformations," a multi-faceted ministry located in the San Jose slum of Guararí where drugs, prostitution, and gangs are rampant. Transformations is dedicated to offering the people of Guararí, many of whom are illegal Nicaraguan immigrants, a chance to experience the transforming power of Christ. They feed children, offer tutoring and after-school programs, play sports with the youth, teach adult sewing & art classes and lead Bible studies. Hugo, the director of this ministry, was physically attacked and slandered recently by neighbors who sought control and wanted him to stop ministering in the neighborhood.

In the last two Psalms we examined, the Psalmist asked God to defeat critical speech against him by trusting in His triumph and praising Him for His strength and lovingkindness, exactly how Hugo responded (Ps. 58-59). He testified that the battle is the Lord's, the subject of Psalm 60.

Need for Community Ministry
In the midst of brokenness and tearing apart of families, physical, sexual and verbal attacks occur. As a result, God's people like Hugo experience great hardship. He experienced similar devastation in his own life where he couldn't speak for five years because of trauma, but the transforming power of Christ delivered him. "Transformations" ministry provides hope so people can be rescued from drugs, prostitution, gangs, sexual abuse and other sin (Ps. 60:1-5).

Calling for Community Ministry
God speaks out of His holiness to call individuals into ministry. Hugo's vision is to send teams out and equip people in other "needy" neighborhoods to do what he's been doing. The land is God's. He portions  and measures Shechem and valley of Succoth. Both Gilead and Manasseh are His. Every location and people group has a purpose. Ephraim is the helmet of His head, Judah His protection, Moab is His washbowl and Edom is where He throws His shoe (Ps. 60:6-8). Not only Hugo, but God has a function for you and provides opportunity to minister in your community, whether it's at work or in the neighborhood.

Power for Community Ministry
Hugo testified to me and others that God gave his team the victory over the latest persecution. They gave God the glory for transformation in the lives of children, youth and adults. The Psalmist said God would go forth with their armies and give help against the adversary. Deliverance by man is in vain, but through God he would do valiantly and defeat his enemies (Ps. 60:9-12).

Consider the following questions:
1. What is God saying to you concerning a ministry in the community?
2. How does God want you to minister based on your background, passion and gifts?
3. Where does God want you to focus your ministry?
4. Who can be partners in your ministry since teamwork and accountability will help make you successful?
