Disclose Sins and Struggles

“Christians think they are so holy. I can’t live up to their expectations,” Larry said.

“Tell me more,” Sam said.

“The few times I went to church, they asked me if I was a Christian.” Larry said. “Their tone of voice made me feel judged! I haven’t been to church for years.”

“You know, Larry,” Sam said, “I often get angry with my wife. She might not talk to me the rest of the day!”

“How do you handle it?” Larry said.

“Jesus makes a huge difference!” Sam said, “I confess my sin and pray for God’s power to respond with a kind word. Sometimes I let my emotions get the best of me. I’m not perfect. I struggle with sin every day.”

Gary Comer lists the Disclosure window as one of the 10 key mission skills in his book, Remission. A Christian shares present personal sins or struggles to convey grace and Christ’s power, which opens up the dialogue with a non-believer. Luke 11 shows how to resolve our sins and struggles so we can disclose them to others.

1. Pray for God’s kingdom
Jesus' disciples asked for instruction on prayer. Jesus answered (my paraphrase): Father, your name enables me to develop a relationship with you so I can ask that you reign on earth like in heaven, meet my daily needs, be an ambassador to help others experience release from the guilt and power of sin and prevent being led into temptation" (Luke 11:1-4).  Pray for God’s kingdom to come down on earth.

2. Pray persistently for Holy Spirit
Jesus told a parable about someone wanting to provide bread to feed an unexpected guest. When his friend refused an initial request at midnight, his persistence was rewarded. He who asks receives, he who seeks finds, and he who knocks on a door, opens it. If unrighteous fathers give to their children, imagine a heavenly father giving the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:5-13). Pray persistently for needs and the Holy Spirit.

3. Defeat strongholds
Some accused Christ of using Satan's power to cast out demons. Christ said a kingdom or house divided against itself falls. Christ said it's impossible to cast out demons if He's divided against Himself. However, if He casts out demons by God's power, then God’s kingdom came upon them. "He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me, scatters." (Luke 11:14-26). Defeat strongholds and idolatry by God's power.

4. Repent of sin
Jesus said those who observe God’s word are blessed. Christ said this generation didn’t repent of their sin like Nineveh after Jonah preached to them. The Queen of the South will also condemn this generation because she heard Solomon’s wisdom. Someone greater than Jonah and Solomon were in this generation's midst (Luke 11:27-32). Repent of sin and ask for wisdom to do God’s word.

5. Cleanse your heart
No one lights a lamp to put it under a bushel, but on a lampstand so people see the light. Your eye is lamp of your body. A healthy eye enables the body to be full of light instead of darkness. The Lord accused the Pharisees of cleaning the outside, but leaving their hearts full of robbery and wickedness (Luke 11:33-41). Cleanse your heart so others see Christlike purity, mercy and compassion.

6. Model authenticity
The Pharisees neglected justice and God’s love. They sought honor from men being unaware of their dead hearts instead of helping the weak experience justice and God's love.  They were accountable for killing and persecuting prophets and apostles since the beginning of time. When Christ left, the scribes and Pharisees plotted against Him. They questioned Him closely on many subjects to catch Him in something He might say (Luke 11:42-54).  Model authenticity by sharing Christ’s justice and love in your sins and struggles.

Action Step: Pray for Holy Spirit power to defeat strongholds, repent of sin, and cleanse your heart so you model authenticity by disclosing your sins and struggles with a non-believer.

Join Movement of Adventure with God

Joe tells his son, Cody, to get dressed so they aren’t late to the 10 a.m. Sunday morning service.“Dad, do we have to go? Church is boring!”

“Cody, church is good for you. We don’t want to forsake the assembling of ourselves together!”

“Dad, what does it mean to assemble ourselves together?” Cody said, “I’d rather be playing soccer with my friends on Sunday morning.” “My friends in the youth group don’t say anything in Sunday School. They aren’t any different than people who don’t go to church. In fact, they’re more loving and less judgmental than those who don’t go to church,” Cody said.

Doesn’t God have something more exciting and fulfilling for us? It's better than surfing the largest wave, making the million-dollar sale, experiencing the thrill of victory or getting an A on a final test. Luke 10 shows how we can join a movement of adventure with God.

1. Ask God for laborers
Jesus appointed 70 followers and sent them in groups of two to every place where He was going to visit. He said to ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. They were to be lambs in the midst of wolves (Luke 10:1-3). Ask God for laborers to be sent out into the harvest field.

2. Pursue interactive, trust-filled relationships
Carry no money or supplies, and do not greet anyone on the way. Whatever city you enter, stay and don't leave a house that contains a man of peace. The goal is discipleship until peace rests and remains there (Luke 10:4-8).
Pursue interactive, trust-filled relationships leading to gospel conversations and hospitality.

3. Trust God’s power to heal and share gospel
Heal those who are sick and say, "The kingdom of God has come near to you." If they don't listen, their judgment will be worse than Tyre and Sidon that leads to Hades. One who listens to you listens to Me, and one who rejects you rejects Me (Luke 10:9-16). Trust God’s power to heal and share gospel of kingdom so it connects with them.

4. Affirm your identity in Christ
The 72 told Jesus that demons were subject to them in His name. Jesus said He watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning and gave them authority so the enemy wouldn’t injure them.  Jesus said to rejoice their names were recorded in heaven, not spirits submitting to them. Jesus rejoiced that the Father revealed revelation to them rather than the educated and kings
(Luke 10:17-24). Affirm your identity in Christ instead of ministry results.

5. Show compassion ministering to practical needs
A lawyer asked what he should to do to inherit eternal life. Jesus told him to love God with all his heart, soul, strength, and mind and neighbor as himself. Jesus told a parable about the Good Samaritan who felt compassion toward someone robbed. Instead of passing by, he bandaged their wounds, poured oil, put him on his own beast, brought him to an inn, cared for him, and paid two denarii to the innkeeper while he went away (Luke 10:25-37).
Show compassion ministering to practical needs that come across your path.

6. Listen to God and pray persistently for God’s kingdom
Martha offered hospitality as she welcomed Jesus into her home. Her sister, Mary, listened to the Lord's word, while sitting at His feet. Martha was distracted with all her preparations. Jesus said she was worried and bothered about so many things, but Mary chose the good part. Pray persistently for God’s kingdom to come on earth and for the Holy Spirit
(Luke 10:38-11:13). Listen to God and pray persistently for God’s kingdom and Holy Spirit

Ask > Relationships > Heal > Gospel > Identity > Compassion > Listen & Pray

Will you join the movement of adventure with God? Notice the gospel is at the center of everything we do. Ask God for laborers. Pursue interactive, trust-filled relationships leading to gospel conversations. Trust God’s power to heal and share the gospel of the kingdom so it connects. Affirm your identity in Christ. Show compassion ministering to practical needs. Listen to God and pray persistently for God’s kingdom and Holy Spirit so you repeat the movement of adventure with Him.

Jesus is at work (notice last part of Luke 10:1—"place where He was about to go”). To see movement, train your friends and family who reach their friends and family, who reach their friends and family.

Cultivating Spiritual Influence

Gary Comer, author of Soul Whisperer: Why the Church Must Change the Way It Views Evangelism says spiritual influence doesn’t come by canned messaging of “telling the gospel.”  We need practical dialogue skills on how to form authentic relationships. The drawing principles of Christ involve “starting where people are,” “read what they need,” and “know where to take them.” Luke 7 illustrates some of these principles.

1.   Reach Out Authentically to Unbelievers
A centurion’s slave was sick and near death. The centurion told Jesus to say the word and his servant would be healed recognizing he was under authority like Him. Jesus said his faith was greater than anyone in Israel (Luke 7:1-10).  Reach out authentically and honorably to unbelievers that God brings across your path.

2.   Show Compassion and Pray for Healing
To the son of a widow, the Lord said, "Young man, I say to you, arise!" When the dead man sat up and spoke, fear gripped them and they began glorifying God (Luke 7:11-17). Show compassion and pray for healing to glorify God.

3.   Observe Varied Benefits of the Gospel
Jesus healed many people of diseases, afflictions, evil spirits and granting sight to the blind. He told John the Baptist's disciples to report what they saw:
1. Blind receive sight (spiritual)
2. Lame walk (physical)
3. Lepers cleansed (mental and psychological)
4. Deaf hear (social relationships)
5. Dead raised up (emotional)
6. Poor have gospel preached to them (evangelism)
7. Blessed is he who is not offended by Me (grace and peace) (Luke 7:18-23).
Observe varied benefits of the gospel.

4.   Dialogue Wisely to Form Friendships with Unbelievers
Jesus told the multitudes that John the Baptist was a messenger to prepare the way of Christ. The people and tax-gatherers acknowledged God's justice, but the Pharisees and lawyers (power elite) rejected God's purpose. John wasn’t indulging in bread or wine, so people said he had a demon. Jesus came eating and drinking, and people said he was a drunk and friend of tax-gatherers and sinners. (Luke 7:24-35).
Dialogue wisely to form friendships with unbelievers.

5.   Discern Gospel Key to Prepare Minds and Hearts
Simon, part of the power elite, requested Jesus to eat with him. An immoral woman came to the house weeping, kissed Jesus' feet, and anointed them with perfume. Simon judged the woman because of her sin. Then Jesus told him a story about a moneylender with two debtors: one owed 500 denarii (500 days of wages) and the other 50. He graciously forgave both since neither could repay. Jesus asked Simon who would love Him more? He said the one who forgave more.  Jesus told Simon that the one forgiven much loves much. Jesus told the woman that her sins were forgiven and her faith saved her (Luke 7:36-50).
Discern the gospel key in preparing minds and hearts to believe and follow Christ.

Action Steps:
  1. Realize that spiritual influence comes as you disclose personal sin and develop authentic relationships with unbelievers “starting where they are,” “read what they need,” and “know where to take them.”
  2. Through spiritual dialogue and listening, you discover the unique signature message (gospel key) of how the gospel becomes “good news” to unbelieving friends in their particular situation.
  3. After discovering their gospel key, describe the spiritual benefit by painting a picture of a preferred life knowing God. Jesus did this with judgmental Simon whose gospel key was forgiveness (Luke 7:36-50).
  4. Wait for the right moment to share this insight with your unbelieving friend. Pull them aside for a focused conversation that may begin a whole new dialogue.

Send Ambassadors Who Share God's Word (Insights in Prophets)

A key strategy in building the body of Christ is sending ambassador who share God's word internationally. Breaking the curse of sin through God's word enables people to walk in God's ways for spiritual influence. Trust God across national and denominational lines by networking ambassadors in prayerful unity. Then people can return to God by rebuilding the scattered church through His word and showing true justice and compassion to the needy.

Return to God to Rebuild Scattered Church

God spoke to Zechariah during the reign of Darius to not be like their forefathers who did not return to Him and away from their evil ways so He could return to them. The forefathers finally repented saying the Lord Almighty did what their ways and practices deserved. Three months later God spoke again to Zechariah in a vision where a man rode a red horse with red, brown and white horses behind him. The angel revealed that these were ones the Lord sent to go throughout the earth. The angel of the Lord asked how long He would withhold mercy from Jerusalem and Judah during 70 years of His anger. The angel said to proclaim that God was very jealous for Jerusalem and Zion, but angry with the nations that felt secure. He would return to Jerusalem with mercy, rebuild His house and stretch the measuring line so His towns would overflow with prosperity. He would again comfort and choose Jerusalem. The angel showed Zechariah four horns that scattered Judah, Israel and Jerusalem. The Lord showed him four craftsmen to terrify and throw down these horns (Zech 1:1-21). Return to merciful God who rebuilds the scattered body of Christ according to His word.

Trust God Across National and Denominational Lines
He saw a man with a line to measure the dimensions of Jerusalem. Another angel said that Jerusalem would be a city without walls because of the great number of men and livestock. God would be wall of fire around it and its glory within. He punished those who touched His people considered as the apple of His eye. God lived among them and many nations joined with Him to become His people. All mankind were still before the Lord (Zech. 2:1-13). Trust God to work across national and denominational lines for His glory.

Walk in God's Ways for Spiritual Influence
He saw Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord and Satan at his right side accusing him. The Lord rebuked Satan because He chose Jerusalem. He asked if this man was a burning stick snatched from the fire. The angel said to those standing by Joshua to take off his filthy clothes. God said He took away his sin and put rich garments on him including a clean turban. God said if Joshua walked in His ways, then he would govern His house and have a place among those standing there. He engraved an inscription on one stone with seven eyes. He removed the sin of this land in a single day. In that day, each of them would invite his neighbor to sit under His vine and fig tree (Zech. 3:1-10). Walk in God's ways confessing your sins for spiritual influence in His kingdom.

Send Ambassadors Who Share God's Word
Zechariah saw a gold lampstand with a bowl on top with seven lights on it and two olive trees on both sides of the bowl. God's word to Zerubbabel answered, "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit." He said that Zerubbabel laid the foundation and completed the temple. Instead of despising the day of small things, men rejoiced when they saw the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. These seven were the eyes of the Lord that ranged through the earth. The two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that poured golden oil represented the two who were anointed to serve the Lord (Zech. 4:1-14). Send Spirit-empowered ambassadors who share God's word to build up the body of Christ worldwide.

Break Curse of Sin Through God's Word
Zechariah saw a flying scroll representing the breaking of the curse over the whole land, which removed every thief and those who swore falsely. Sending it to every home destroyed the curse of Satan's power. He saw a measuring basket representing the iniquity of everyone. A woman inside represented wickedness. He pushed her back in the basket and the lead cover down over its mouth. Two women with wind in their wings like a stork lifted the basket before heaven and earth, took the basket to Babylon and build a house for it (Zech. 5:1-11). Break the curse of sin through the authority of God's word in every home and city.

Network Ambassadors in Prayerful Unity
Zechariah saw four chariots with four colors of horses representing the four spirits of heaven standing in the presence of the Lord before the whole world. The chariot  with black horses went toward the north country, white horses to the west and multi-colored to the south, but straining to go throughout the earth. God said to take silver and gold from the exiles who arrived from Babylon and take it to Josiah who made a crown that was set on the head of Joshua the high priest. His name was Branch who branched out from this place and build the temple of God. He was clothed with majesty to sit and rule as a priest on his throne with harmony between the two. The crown was given to Heldai, Tobijah, Jedaiah and Hen son of Zephaniah as a memorial in the temple. Those far away came and helped build the temple if they diligently obeyed the Lord (Zech. 6:1-15). Network ambassador in prayerful unity to build the body of Christ internationally.

Show True Justice and Compassion to Needy
Two years later God told Zechariah that the people of Bethel sent Sharezer, Regem-Melech and their men to entreat God by asking the priests and prophets whether they should mourn and fast in the fifth month like previously. Were they really fasting for God 70 years or just feasting for themselves when they ate or drank? God told Zechariah to administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another; not oppress the widow, fatherless, alien or poor; and not think evil of each other. They made their hearts as hard as flint and did not listen to God's word sent by the earlier prophets. He scattered them among all nations where they were strangers in the desolate land (Zech. 7:1-14). Show true justice, mercy and compassion to the needy.

To build the body of Christ internationally:
1. Send ambassadors who share God's word throughout the world
2. Break the curse of sin through God's word
3. Walk in God's ways for spiritual influence
4. Trust God across national and denominational lines
5. Network ambassadors in prayerful unity
6. Return to God by rebuilding the scattered church through His word
6. Show true justice and compassion to the needy

God's Mercy and Judgment Demonstrated (Insights in Prophets)

"What gives us conviction of sin is not the number of sins we have committed; it is the sight of the holiness of God." (Martyn Lloyd-Jones). In the midst of sin, we see God's mercy, which triumphs over judgment. God's holiness demands that He deal with sin. God's fulfills His promises and multiplies His people because of His love.

Elisha predicted that flour and two measures of barley would be sold for a shekel each in the gate of Samaria. An officer wondered if the Lord could open the windows of heaven, but Elisha said he would not eat of it. Four leprous men figured they would die of famine. They entered the camp of Arameans, but the Lord caused them to flee because of hearing a large army attacking them. The lepers entered their tents, ate food and hid silver, gold and clothes they found (2 Kings 7:1-8). God promises to provide for you miraculously in famine.

The lepers told the king and he figured the Arameans would attack and capture Israel once they left the city. The king took two chariots with horses to go after the army of the Arameans, but found they had thrown clothes and equipment in their haste so they plundered the camp. Flour and barley was sold for the price predicted according to the word of the Lord. The officer was trampled at the gate and died just as Elisha predicted (2 Kings 7:9-20). God fulfills His promises in famine.

Elisha told the woman whose son he restored to life to leave since the Lord called for famine. After seven years, she left the land of the Philistines and appealed for her house and field. When the king met the son restored to life by Elisha, he gave the property back to the woman. Ben-hadad king of Aram sent Hazael to ask Elisha if he would recover from his sickness. Elisha told Hazael that Ben-hadad would die and with weeping, predicted Hazael would kill men, women and children after he became king. Ben-hadad died and Hazael became king (2 Kings 8:7-15). God's sovereignty changes the hearts of authorities to respond and accomplish His purposes.

Jehoram, the  son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, became king and did evil like Ahab. The Lord did not destroy Judah because He promised to give descendants through David. Ahaziah, the son of Jehoram king of Judah, next reigned and he walked in evil like Ahab (2 Kings 8:16-29).  God's mercy and compassion triumph over sin so His people can be multiplied.

Elisha told one of the prophets to pour oil on Jehu son of Jehoshaphat to anoint as king over Israel. The prophet declared that Jehu would destroy the house of Ahab to avenge the blood of the Lord's servants shed by Jezebel. Dogs would devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel and no one would bury her (2 Kings 9:1-13). God chooses and equips people to fulfill His will.

Jehu questioned Joram, "How can there be peace as long as all the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel abound?" Jehu shot his arrow to kill Joram whose body was thrown on the field belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. Jehu wounded Ahaziah king of Judah who died later (2 Kings 9:14-29). God's holiness demands that idolatry and witchcraft be judged.

Eunuchs threw Jezebel down from the window and nothing was left to bury in fulfillment of the word of the Lord spoken through Elijah, "On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs will devour Jezebel's flesh. Jezebel's body will be like refuse on the ground in the plot at Jezreel, so that no one will be able to say, 'This is Jezebel'" (2 Kings 9:30-37). God fulfills His prophecies of judgment according to His word.

Where do you see God's mercy and compassion in your life? Praise Him for His mercy and compassion. Where is God judging you for your sin? Confess and forsake your sin.

God is Doing a New Thing with Those Outside the Church (Insights in NT)

Picture
Joining our local human services federation showed me that people of the world often show more compassion than church people. Public school teachers and staff rival and often exceed the passion of the church in seeing children and their parents prosper. The director of after-school programs in low-income (Title One) schools in my city asked me for help in getting churches involved in serving their families. The irony is that city and school officials often have a greater desire for churches to serve people in the community than the congregations themselves. However, believers are awakening to the call for  community service. The religious leaders in Jesus' day saw blindness in one man and questioned how he was healed. Similar, believers often don't consider their own blindness on how God is working outside the four walls of the church to bring healing and restoration. Let's see how religious leaders grapple with the healing of a blind man in John 9.

Jesus saw a man blind from birth as He passed by. The disciples asked Jesus if the reason he was born blind was because of the man's or his parents' sin. He answered that it was so God's works could be displayed in him since we must do His works everyday to show that Jesus is the light of the world. He applied clay to the blind man's eyes and told him to wash in the pool of Siloam. Controversy arose how his eyes were opened. The man said that Jesus made clay, anointed his eyes, told him to go to Siloam and wash, and then he received sight (John 9:1-12). Doing God's works everyday shows that Jesus is the light of the world.

The Pharisees asked the formerly blind man how he received sight. He said this man applied clay to his eyes, washed them and now he sees. A division came between those who didn't believe Jesus was from God because He healed on the Sabbath and those who believed because of His healing. Under further questioning, the formerly blind man said Jesus was a prophet. The parents of the formerly blind man wouldn't tell the Jews how he now sees because they feared being put out of the synagogue for confessing Jesus as the Messiah. They said to ask their son so he could speak for himself (John 9:13-23). Confessing Jesus as the Messiah leads some to believe in Him and others to reject you.

The Jews asked the former blind man a second time to glorify God and say Jesus was a sinner. He said, "Whether He is a sinner, I do not know, one thing I do know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see." The Jews asked him again how He opened his eyes. The formerly blind man said they weren't listening and then asked whether they wanted to be His disciples. The Jews reviled him because they knew God spoke to Moses as his disciples, but were unsure where Jesus came from. The formerly blind man challenged the Jews to look at the evidence concerning his healing. He said that "God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing, and does His will, He hears him. . . . If this man were not from God, He could do nothing." The Jews put him out saying if wasn't appropriate for a man born in sin to be teaching them (John 9:24-34). Sharing your personal testimony and God's word boldly often leads to religious people rejecting you.

When Jesus heard that the formerly blind man had been put out, He asked if he believed in the Son of Man. He answered, "Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?" Jesus said that he had seen Him and that person was talking to him now. The formerly blind said he believed and then worshiped Him. Jesus said it was for judgment He came into the world so the blind may see and those who see may become blind. When the Pharisees asked if they were blind, Jesus said they would have no sin by being blind, but saying, 'We see,' proves their sin remains (John 9:35-41). God uses spiritually blind and not religious people to show He is the light of the world.

We ask people to believe in Christ before they do the works of God, but the formerly blind man challenged the Pharisees to do His will first to hear Him. Could this be the way that God is working in our world today by speaking to those outside the church walls who are doing works of compassion? How could you join God in His work by working alongside a social service agency, volunteering at your child's school or team with others for a particular cause like homelessness, child abuse, etc.

How Offenders Reconcile Relationships (Insights in Law)

2/26/2011

Picture
The biggest obstacle for reconciliation of fractured relationships is selfishness. A husband and wife let bitterness build a wall between them so they won't talk or allow anger to drive them apart. Hardened hearts cause selfishness and becomes the wedge to break up relationships, including marriages, families and churches. A peacemaker takes advantage of timing, integrity, compassion and communication in reconciling  fractured relationship as you saw with Joseph and his brothers (Gen. 43).  For reconciliation to occur, examine how his brothers took responsibility and grieved over their sin in addition to a broken and contrite spirit with compassion for others. It's a model for you to follow in reconciling with broken relationships.

Offenders Take Responsibility for Sin
Joseph commanded his house steward to fill his brothers' sacks with food and put his cup in Benjamin’s sack. Joseph told his house steward to follow and say to the men after catching up with them, “Why have you repaid evil for good? Is not this the one from which the lord drinks, and which he indeed uses for divination? You have done wrong in doing this?” (Gen. 44:1-5). Obedience tests lead unreconciled offenders to take responsibility for their sin.

Offenders Grieve Over Sin
Joseph’s brothers denied stealing the money from his house. The brothers agreed that he who was found with the money should be killed and the rest become slaves. Joseph said that the person who had the money would be his slave and rest innocent. The cup was found in Benjamin’s sack, they tore their clothes in grief and returned to the city (Gen. 44:6-13). Obedience tests motivate unreconciled offenders to grieve over sin.

Offenders Have Broken and Contrite Spirit

Judah and his brothers fell to the ground before Joseph. He asked his brothers: “What is this deed that you have done? Do you not know that such a man as I can indeed practice divination?” Judah didn’t know what to say since he realized they couldn’t justify themselves because God knew their sin. Joseph said that Benjamin would be his slave and the other brothers were to “go up in peace to your father” (Gen. 44:14-17). Critical step in reconciliation of broken family relationships is offenders having a broken and contrite spirit.

Offenders Have Compassion for Others

Judah asked Joseph not to make Benjamin his slave. Grief over losing his beloved son would cause him to die. Judah argued that they fulfilled Joseph’s desire by bringing Benjamin back to him. If he didn't return to his father, Jacob would see it as evil and blame Judah. He begged Joseph to let him remain in Egypt instead of Benjamin and said, "For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me, lest I see the evil that would overtake my father?” (Gen. 44:18-34). Another critical step in reconciliation of broken family relationships is offenders having compassion for others instead of being selfish.

Answer the following questions regarding an unreconciled relationship that you face:
1. Have you taken responsibility for your sin?
2. Have you grieved over your sin?
3. Do you have a broken and contrite spirit?
4. Do you have compassion for others?

Right Way to Reconcile Fractured Relationships (Insights in Law)

2/12/2011

Picture
Nothing hurts more than fractured relationships with family members or close friends. A ministry partner went behind my back to undermine my ministry. I was devastated. God used similar principles in reconciling my relationship with this individual as He used in reconciling Joseph with his brothers who had sold him into slavery. God sovereignly arranged circumstances  as we enjoyed fellowship with one another in the relaxed atmosphere of watching a Nebraska football game. A perfect storm of timing, integrity, compassion and communication paved the way in reconciling that fractured relationship as with Joseph and his brothers.

Timing
With a severe famine in Canaan, Israel told his sons to go back to Egypt and buy food. Only by bringing back his brother, Judah said, would they see the man again. Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly by telling the man you still had another brother?” Judah assured his father that he would bear full responsibility in bringing back his brother (Gen. 43:1-10).  God uses trying circumstances to make offenders' hearts tender and responsive so they reconcile fractured relationships.

Integrity

Israel said his sons should bring the best products of the land as a present and return twice as much money found in the mouth of the sacks in case it was a mistake. He asked  God Almighty to grant them compassion so this man would release Simeon and let Benjamin come back to him. The brothers, including Benjamin, went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph (Gen. 43:11-15). Integrity tests determine if people will choose character and reconciliation over riches and selfishness.

Compassion
When Joseph saw Benjamin, he asked that an animal be prepared so they could eat lunch together in his house. The brothers were afraid the money returned in their sacks would provide Joseph opportunity to make them slaves. He reassured them, “Be at ease, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money.” Joseph brought Simeon out, gave them water, washed their feet and fed their donkeys. The brothers prepared the present for Joseph since they heard about eating lunch with him (Gen. 43:16-25).
The peacemaker who initiates reconciliation must have a compassionate, non-judgmental heart in putting the offending party at ease to improve chances for reconciliation.

Communication
After Joseph received the gift, he asked about their welfare and whether their old father was alive. They answered yes and bowed down in homage. When Joseph saw Benjamin, he was deeply stirred and wept. He served them separately since it was loathsome for Egyptians to eat with Hebrews. The brothers were seated according to their birthright and looked at one another in astonishment. Benjamin’s portion was five times more than the others as they feasted and drank freely with Joseph (Gen. 43:26-34). The peacemaker observes appropriate cultural norms while engaging in free and open communication.

This passage illustrates Gal. 6:1-5:
1. If you are involved in a broken relationship, look to yourself first.

2. Be gentle & humble while not thinking too highly of yourself.
3. Bear the other person's burden by initiating the process of reconciliation.
4 Use great sensitivity in communication by asking questions and listening to help the offending party feel more at ease as preparation for reconciliation.

God is My Shepherd (insights in Psalms)

All of us experience times when we feel lost, discouraged or hopeless. I remember a time when a promising ministry opportunity was shot down in flames. This ministry accepted me as a full-time vocational worker, but the leadership changed their minds after I attended a planning retreat for staff. It felt like a parachute had been pulled away from me and I was descending in rapid free fall. Where do we go when friends scoff, doubts reign, hope fails and finances crash? There is a person who offers provision, protection, purpose and presence in times like these.

The Lord is personal. He is MY shepherd (Ps. 23:1). God provides our financial, physical, emotional or social needs. If you need finances, call upon Him. If you need a job, ask Him to provide open doors for a job interview. If emptiness, emotional hurt, fear or anxiety overtake you, ask your shepherd for peace. If you need a friend, ask God to provide since He sticks closer than a brother (Prov. 18:24). God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ (Phil. 4:19).

God not only provides, He protects. Security becomes important after He meets our physical, emotional and social needs. Our shepherd makes us lie down in green pastures and leads us to waters of rest (Ps. 23:2). He protects us from a multitude of spiritual enemies seeking to harm us. False teaching like prosperity gospel, business leadership methodology and celebrity hero worship lead us away from the protective canopy of God's Word. The fast pace of the world causes stress and distractions so our work or ministry takes precedence over our relationship with Christ and caring for our families. Remaining in green pastures and quiet waters slows us down so we can feed on the pure and unadulterated word of God (1 Pet. 2:1-2). Unfortunately, many believers learn God's word second-hand from teachers and don't spend sufficient time in God's word themselves.

Those who study and meditate on God's word will be refreshed spiritually by the Lord (Ps. 23:3). As a result, God will guide them into His purpose for their lives. He provides discernment to follow the right path whether it's a marriage, job, church, friends, hobbies, food, entertainment, etc.

After God provides for all our needs, protects us from spiritual enemies and reveals His purpose, we must live it out. We lack confidence and power as we face evil, darkness and chaos. God's presence empowers us to walk through the valley of death (Ps. 23:4-5). His rod and staff provide authority and support enabling us to experience His tender compassion so we can apply His word in every situation. God's promises are like a feast to change our perspectives so we can rejoice in the midst of trouble. Nothing compares to God's love for us because He is always faithful and unchanging in the various seasons of life (Ps. 23:6).

What aspect of God's shepherd nature (provision, protection, purpose and presence) is most precious to you and why?

Compassion Makes Gospel Beautiful (insights in NT)

I grew up in a church that focused on compassion and justice with hurting people. After I became a believer in an evangelical, Bible church, proclaiming the gospel and discipling people toward spiritual maturity was our sole concern. Who's right? Both! In Matt. 11, Christ emphasized sharing the gospel. In this study from Matt. 12, Christ addresses compassion. We need a balanced Christianity to follow in the footsteps of Christ and  be attractive to the world.

Jesus and His disciples ate on the Sabbath. He used it as a teaching opportunity to show the priority of compassion over sacrificial good works (Matt. 12:1-7). When Christ says He "desires compassion,"the word, desire, literally means "pressing into action" or doing the will of God. Compassion literally means mercy or "special and immediate regard to the misery which is the consequence of sins." In Matt. 11, sharing the gospel through evangelism allows people to experience God's grace and forgiveness of sin. Afterward, God's compassion and mercy address the consequences of sin rather than passing judgment or condemnation on them.

Christ illustrated compassion and mercy by healing the man with a withered hand on the Sabbath (Matt. 12:8-13). The Pharisees responded to real human need with judgment and accusations (Matt. 12:10,14). Jesus came not only to see and save the lost but to proclaim and model compassion and justice by healing hurting humanity (Luke 19:10; Matt. 12:18-21). We see another illustration of Jesus demonstrating compassion when He casted out demons from a blind and dumb man. The Pharisees came to rescue, opposing Christ again.  Jesus called their bluff and said they were nuts to think Satan motivated Him to cast out demons (Matt. 12:22-29).

Jesus then addresses the root of compassion. Why are some people compassionate and others not? He explained blasphemy of the Holy Spirit as resistance against the convincing power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus implied the Pharisees lacked compassion because they rejected Him (Matt. 12:30-32). When we share the gospel and someone rejects it by not believing, they are blaspheming the Holy Spirit. At the point of faith, God justifies or declares them righteous like Abraham when he believed God (Gen. 15:6).

Christ moves from unbelievers to addressing believers. Our testimony to the world is in large part determined by the words we speak (Matt. 12:33-37). A different Greek word for "justify" is used in Matt. 12:37. Instead of declaring us righteous, our words justify or bring out the essence of our personhood by revealing our character. Our words can be idle and unprofitable or active and profitable to stir people to love and good works (Heb. 10:24-25). Ask yourself: Do I build others up or tear them down? Do I encourage or discourage others. Do I unify or divide people? Both unbelievers and believers can lack compassion.

Unfortunately, the church has been its own worst enemy in repelling people from the gospel by the caustic words we share with one another and the outside world. The world condemns us because of our lack of compassion expressed through divisive words (Matt. 12:37).

Even the church can get caught in the quest for signs or miracles by focusing on worldly marketing techniques instead of pursuing an authentic relationship with Christ (Matt. 12:38-45). Selling our soul out to celebrity and media-hype publicity to win a hearing degenerates our character so our last state becomes worst than the first (Matt. 12:45). In contrast, Christ is looking for those who do His will by relating intimately with Him as His brother or sister (Matt. 12:46-50).

Ask God to impart love and compassion in your life as a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Who can you come alongside and show love? What will compassion look like?

My goal is to ignite the hearts of people by explaining God's word in the Law, Prophets, Psalms and New Testament consecutively, much like the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:32,44). I have been a missionary in Lincoln, NE, for 13 years with Christ For the City Int. and Sync with God.

Sync with God is a highly versatile web app that hosts on-demand, virtual small groups. Sync is designed to connect young seekers in the faith and scripturally-trained mentors, even globally. It offers a safe, engaging interface for Millennials/Gen.
