How to Equip Shepherds to Disciple Nations (Insights in Prophets)

How does the church deal with spiritual, emotional, mental, social and physical devastation in every nation?
Jeremiah taught in Jer. 1-6 that you must drink from rivers of living water to empower prayer and fasting for shepherds after God's heart to disciple biblical illiterate people in every city and nation.

Jer. 7-13 explained how to equip shepherds after God's heart to disciple nations. Deal justly with poor, repent of sin, appreciate God's word and ways, call upon a wise and powerful God, trust Him for protection from persecution, care for nations in complex situations and be humble to praise and honor Him.

Deal Justly with the Poor and Embrace Truth
Jeremiah told Judah to reform their ways and actions to not trust in deceptive words. He asked them to deal justly with the alien, fatherless, widow; not shed innocent blood; not to follow other gods; not allow God's name become a den of robbers and not trust in the temple. By serving the Queen of Heaven, they harmed themselves to their own shame. By following the inclinations of their evil hearts, they went backward and refused correction. When truth perished and vanished from their lips, God rejected and abandoned this generation. Joy and gladness left and the land became desolate (Jer. 7:1-34). Deal justly with the poor and embrace truth to see progress in your city.

Repent of Sin and Know God's Word
Jerusalem relied on deceit, refused to repent of their wickedness and pursued their own course like a horse charging into battle. God's people did not know the requirements of the Lord. The scribes handled God's word falsely. All were greedy for gain. Prophets and priests practiced deceit and dressed peoples' wounds superficially. They called for peace and healing but only terror came. God mourned when enemies crushed His people. No healing was available for the wound of His people (Jer. 8:1-22). Repent of sin and know God's word as the first step to heal wounds.

Appreciate God's Ways
Instead of triumph in God's truth, His people sinned and trusted deception. No one was instructed by God to know what ruined the land. People forsook the Law and followed the stubbornness of their hearts to worship Baal. Let not the wise, strong and rich boast of their wisdom, strength and riches. Instead, let him boast that he understood and knew God since He delighted in kindness, justice and righteousness on earth (Jer. 9:1-26). Appreciate God's ways instead of trusting the deception of man's wisdom, strength and riches.

Call Upon a Wise and Powerful God
Do not learn or fear a nations' worthless ways, customs and idols. No nation or kingdom could endure the wrath of a wise, powerful, eternal God and King. False gods perished as they did not create the heavens and earth. God made the earth, founded the world by wisdom and stretched out the heavens by understanding. He sent lightning and brought wind from His storehouses. Peoples' idols were worthless and they had no knowledge. They felt hopeless to cure their wounds and sickness in their homes and families. Senseless shepherds who did not talk with God caused His flock to scatter. A man did not own his life and could not direct his steps. Jeremiah prayed for God's wrath to be poured on nations that did not call on Him since they destroyed His people (Jer. 10:1-25). Call upon a wise and powerful God to heal your wounds and discover His purpose.

Trust God for Protection from Persecution
God told Judah through Jeremiah to obey His covenant given to those He brought out of Egypt as His people. Throughout history, God warned them to obey Him. Instead, they followed their stubborn, evil hearts and experienced the curses of disobedience and disaster. When evil people plotted to destroy Jeremiah if he continued prophesying against them, he committed his cause to God. God promised to kill his enemies (Jer. 11:1-23). Trust God for protection from persecution while discipling nations in His word.

Care for Nations in Complex Situations
Jeremiah asked why the wicked bore fruit when God was far from their hearts. Even though their grass withered, people thought God would not see it. If someone stumbled in safe country, how could they manage in the thickets by the Jordan? Their brothers betrayed them pretending to speak well. God allowed them to be devoured by their enemies like a speckled bird of prey. Many shepherds ruined His vineyard and turned His pleasant field into a desolate wasteland. The whole land laid waste because no one cared. People wore themselves out and gained nothing. God showed compassion to His people and brought them back to their land. Any nation that learned about God was established among His people. He destroyed those who did not listen to Him (Jer. 12:1-17). Care for nations (niches) living in complex situations so they can fellowship with God's people.

Be Humble and Glorify God
God told Jeremiah to wear and hide a belt so it would be useless. It represented how He ruined Judah's pride in  serving other gods. God planned to bound the house of Israel and Judah as His people for renown, praise and honor. Instead of their wineskins being filled with wine, He filled kings, priests, prophets and everyone with drunkenness so they would not be reconciled with one another. Their pride and not giving glory to God brought darkness, captivity and exile. Trusting false gods scattered and prevented them from doing good (Jer. 13:1-27). Be humble and glorify God so you can praise and honor Him.

Consider the following checklist in equipping shepherds to disciple the nations:
1. Deal justly with the poor to see progress in your city
2. Repent of sin and know God's word as the first step to heal wounds
3. Appreciate God's ways instead of trusting the deception of man's wisdom, strength and riches
4. Call upon a wise and powerful God to heal your wounds and discover His purpose
5.  Trust God for protection from persecution while discipling nations in His word
6. Care for nations in complex situations so they can fellowship with God's people
7. Be humble and glorify God so you can praise and honor Him
Which one will you begin to apply now?

Complexity of Leadership (Insights in Prophets)

Leadership is not simply anymore because today's problems are complex and interconnected. No one person can know what to do. To understand issues, all parts of a system must participate and contribute. Leadership must expand from isolated, role-based actions of individuals to innovative, contextual interactions that occur across an entire social system. David faced a complex leadership problem when he tried to unite the 10 tribes of Israel with the two tribes of Judah. When Absalom, David's son and rebel ruler of Israel, was killed and the nation defeated, a system of complex relationships between Israel and Judah began. Observing components of Godly leadership in 2 Sam. 18-19 will help us navigate in the complex systems we face today.

David numbered the people, set commanders of thousands and hundreds with one third under Joab, Abishai and Ittai the Gittite, respectivel
y. With David staying back, he told the three commanders to deal gently with Absalom (2 Sam. 18:1-5). Godly leaders organize the right quantity and command structure for warriors in spiritual battle.

The servants of David defeated and killed 20,000 Israelites in Ephraim when the battle spread over the whole countryside. The forest devoured more people than the sword. Joab thrust three spears in Absalom's heart after finding him hanging in the air when his hair was caught in over-hanging branches. People cast Absalom in a deep pit and all Israel fled to their tents  (2 Sam. 18:6-18). Godly leaders deploy spiritual warriors on many battle fronts until they defeat the enemy.

Ahimaaz and  Cushite ran to tell the news to David. He wept when he learned of Absalom's death and said, "Would I had died instead of you, Absalom" (2 Sam. 18:19-33). Godly leaders allow passions and emotions to get out of balance occasionally.

Joab said David's excessive grief over Absalom's death showed ungratefulness by loving those who hated him and hating those who loved him even though his servants saved David and his family's lives. Joab exhorted David  go out and speak kindly to his servants, which he did. Israel quarreled about bringing David back as king. They reflected how he saved them from the Philistines, but fled from Absalom (2 Sam. 19:1-10). Godly leaders heed correction from others to enhance their effectiveness.

David asked his close brothers, Zadok and Abiathar the priests, why they were the last to bring him back as king. David turned the hearts of Judah as one man in supporting his return as king (2 Sam. 19:11-15). Godly leaders unify others to work toward a single goal.

Shimei who had cursed David earlier admitted his sin and wanted to be first of the house of Joseph to meet him. David did not allow Zeruiah to kill Shimei (2 Sam. 19:16-23). Godly leaders discern their followers' mixed motives for serving.

When David asked Mephibosheth why he didn't go with the king, he said his servant deceived and slandered David by not preparing a donkey for him to leave. Mephibosheth expressed his gratefulness about eating at David's table. He said Mephibosheth would divide the land with Ziba (2 Sam. 19:24-30). Godly leaders care and serve the less fortunate.

David blessed Barzillai, an old man who sustained the king while he stayed at Mahanaim. He requested that Chimham cross over with David who agreed to do good for him. All the people and David crossed over the Jordan (2 Sam. 19:31-39).
Godly leaders develop close friendships and are approachable.

After David, Judah and half of Israel crossed over the Jordan, Israel asked why Judah stole him away and treated them with contempt when David, his family and men were brought over the Jordan. Israel argued that with ten parts in the king (ten tribes) and being the first to suggest bringing back the king, they had more claim than Judah. Judah's words were harsher than Israel's (2 Sam. 19:40-43). Godly leaders face division and quarrels as they seek to fulfill their kingdom purpose.

Which of the following components of Godly leadership are most important for you to apply right now?
1. Organize the right quantity and command structure for warriors in spiritual battle
2. Deploy spiritual warriors on many battle fronts until they defeat the enemy

3. Allow passions and emotions to get out of balance occasionally
4. Heed correction from others to enhance their effectiveness
5. Unify others to work toward a single goal
6. Discern their followers' mixed motives for serving
7. Care and serve the less fortunate
8. Develop close friendships and are approachable
9. Face division and quarrels as they seek to fulfill their kingdom purpose

How to Live in a Complex World (Insights in Prophets)

I used to think everything was black or white. While growing older, I discovered much gray. Because reality contains complexity and nuances, issues of life don't fit common stereotypes. God told Micah to follow three things because they were good for him: do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God in a society where the rich were oppressing the poor, merchants cheated their customers and true prophets were told to keep quiet because of corrupt religious and judicial leaders (Micah 6:8). Judges 14 shows the interplay between God's sovereignty and man's responsibility. In this next chapter, Judges 15, we see how Samson's strong relationship with God provides the foundation for living in a sinful and complex world.

Samson visited his wife and her father did not let him enter, but offered her younger sister instead. Out of love for his wife, Samson said, “This time I will be blameless in regard to Philistines when I do them harm.” He caught 300 foxes and tied them tail to tail and set fields on fire. He slaughtered the Philistines after they burned his wife and her father. Men of Judah then bound and gave Samson into the hands of the Philistines (Judges 15:1-13). Let love of God and others motivate acts of righteousness when injustice occurs.

The Spirit of Lord came upon Samson mightly so ropes on his arms were as flax burned with fire and bonds melted from his hands. He killed 1000 men with a jawbone (Judges 15:14-15). God provides the power for spiritual victory when you maintain strong personal relationship with Him.

Samson said, “With jawbone of donkey, heaps upons heaps, with jawbone of a donkey I have killed a 1000 men.” When he finished speaking, he named that place, ‘high place of jawbone’ (Judges 15:16-17). Testifying of God's power or designating objects to signify spiritual victories helps  you our remembrance of them.

When Samson became very thirsty, he  reminded the Lord of His great deliverance and asked whether he would die of thirst and fall into the hands of the Philistines. God immediately answered his prayer by splitting the hollow place so water came out. When he drank, Samson's strength returned and he revived. He named the place, ‘Spring of him who called.’ Samson judged Israel 20 years in days of Philistines (Judges 15:18-20). Calling upon God when we experience physical or spiritual thirst leads to strength and revival.

Consider the following:
1. What injustice is God calling you to act upon (ex. economic poverty, domestic violence, human trafficking, homelessness, fatherlessness, child abuse, immigration reform, racism, unemployment, substance abuse, divorce, abortion, bullying, gang activity, teenage pregnancy, environment, basic hygiene, etc.)
2. Build yourself up on your most holy faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God and wait anxiously for the mercy of Christ to eternal life (Jude 20-21).
