Unexpected Opportunity

I needed a haircut, but learned that my schedule barber recently graduated from the College of Hair Design in Lincoln, NE.   I walked to my chair and sat down. Sam (not his real name) said, “My hero died in a helicopter crash!”

“Did a friend of yours die?” I asked.

“No, it was Kobe Bryant. I’m a Los Angeles Laker fan.” Sam said. We talked sports for a bit and I mentioned that my favorite professional team is the Chicago Bears.

“Sam, there’s something more important than sports. Let me share something that happened to me while in college.

“During a meeting of Christians, I experienced God’s unconditional love through the students I observed.  I wanted what they had. The speaker mentioned that we must believe in Christ’s death, burial and resurrection for eternal life. That evening in my dorm room, I placed my faith in Christ’s work for the forgiveness of sin. My life completely changed. For example, I used to get very nervous taking Finals. I claimed God’s promise about casting all my care upon Him.” (1 Peter 5:7).

Sam said, “My girlfriend is trying to get me to trust Christ, but I’m resisting.”

“Why is that?” I asked.

“I had such a terrible family growing up. Besides, churches only care about your money.”

“I’m so sorry to hear about your family. Tell me about it.” Sam related how his siblings pursued evil activities, but his grandmother rescued him to live with her when he was in the 4th grade.

“Sam, God models the perfect family in three persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit who love each other,” I said. “They want you to join them at the table and enter into that love and intimate relationship.

Toward the end of my haircut, Sam asked, “Where should I start reading in the Bible?”

“The gospel of John,” I said. “Read one chapter a day and ask God to reveal Himself to you. It takes three weeks since there are 21 chapters in John. Do you have a Bible?”

“I do!” Sam said. As I was getting out of my barber chair, I said, “Don’t forget to read John!”

I often refer people to the gospel of John because it’s the only book in the Bible with an overt evangelistic purpose: “these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:30-31).

God arranged a divine appointment by lining up a new barber who needed to know Christ. It removed my disappointment of not seeing my original barber who wants to use his job as a way to share the gospel with clients.

Paul said his circumstances turned out for the greater progress of the gospel, even while chained in a Roman prison (Philippians 1:12). He closed his letter saying “the brethren who are with me greet you. All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar’s household (Philippians 4:21-22).

Pray that you share the gospel boldly when God opens the door in unexpected ways like Paul (Acts 16:19-34; Colossians 4:2-6).

What Investment Strategy are You Pursuing?

My evangelism team consisting of myself, a nine-year-old boy, a PhD student, and a former gang member who spent 15 years in prison. We approached a young lady trying to get her wiggly 2-year-old into the car. After small talk, bending down and introducing myself to Carter, I asked, “How can I pray for you?” She mentioned a friend. We prayed. I shared my testimony in 90 seconds. She listened. Noticing she was in a rush, I asked, “Do you have a Bible?” She said, “No!” “Would you like a Bible?” “Yes!” After mentioning someone from the church could deliver a Bible, she gave me her address and phone number. During this time, my other team members prayed for two people.

My team was part of an effort to help a church 50 miles away to move outside the four walls. Two months ago, we spent two Wed. nights training in basic gospel conversations, including role play. Three weeks ago, five teams took to the streets. Three weeks later on a Sat. morning, we trained them in the priority of prayer. Two people at a time paired up to role play the gospel before we hit the streets to pray and share the gospel.

In one hour of time, a person trusted Christ as Savior in a park. The pastor’s wife prayed with a formerly homeless, young mother whose 8-year-old child has cancer. She lives next to the pastor’s wife’s sister. This lady wants to visit the church. The various teams prayed with three people who had or knew people with cancer.

The pastor’s wife shared with me that formerly uninvolved church members joined us in praying and sharing the gospel in the streets these past two times.  In contrast, people spend much time and energy preparing and earning a living. The rich man went to the finest schools and found success. He had a fine house, servants and enjoyed life. He reached the pinnacle in making a living, but did he learn how to live? What’s your investment strategy for maximum reward?

1. Discern most strategic kingdom opportunities
Jesus told a parable about a rich man who asked his steward to give an account after squandering his master's possessions. The steward made each of his master's debtors pay off a fraction of the oil and wheat owed. The master praised the unrighteous steward because he acted shrewdly.  “The sons of this age are shrewder in relation to their own kind than the sons of light." (Luke 16:1-8). Discern most strategic kingdom opportunities.

2. Invest resources to make friends in heaven
Christ said to make friends using riches. When it fails, they will receive you into eternal dwellings. He who’s faithful in a little is faithful in much. He who’s unrighteous in a little thing is unrighteous in much. God won't entrust spiritual riches unless you've been faithful with money. No servant can serve two masters for either he will hate the one and love the other or hold to one and despise the other. No one can serve God and money
(Luke 16:9-13). Invest your time, talent and treasure to make friends in heaven.

3. Seek the application of God's word
The Pharisees who loved money scoffed at Jesus since they justified themselves before men. God knows your heart for what’s highly esteemed among men is detestable in His sight. The Law and Prophets were proclaimed until John. The preached word brings people into the kingdom of God. Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery. He who marries a divorcee commits adultery (Luke 16:14-18).
Seek the application of God's word more than recognition from men.

4. Help people avoid eternal punishment
A rich man lived in splendor every day. Lazarus, a poor man covered with sores, longed to be fed with crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. The poor man died and went to Abraham's bosom. The rich man died and went to Hades with agony in flames. He cried for mercy so Lazarus could dip the tip of this finger in water to cool off his tongue. Abraham said he received the good things of life and Lazarus the bad things. The latter is being comforted but not the rich man. A great chasm prevents anyone from crossing over. The rich man asked Father Abraham to warn his five brothers about torment in Hades. Abraham said if they don't listen to Moses and the Prophets, someone rising from the dead won’t persuade them either (Luke 16:19-31).
Help people avoid eternal punishment by sharing God’s word on how to reach heaven.

Action Step:
Invest my time, talents and treasure for eternal reward to help people enter heaven and grow spiritually.

How to Share Your Personal Testimony (Insights in NT)

"We must win rulers; political, economic, scientific, artistic personalities. They are the engineers of souls. They mold the souls of men. Winning them, you win the people they lead and influence" (Richard Wurmbrand). Because Paul knew that kings influence culture, he shared his personal testimony so they could trust Christ as their Savior. Acts 26 gives a great example on how to share your personal testimony.

The Jews requested a favor against Paul to have him killed on the way to Jerusalem. Festus requested influential men to prosecute Paul if there was anything wrong about him. The Jews brought serious charges against Paul they could not prove. Paul said he committed no offense against the Law, temple or Caesar. He appealed to Caesar saying he would be willing to die if he committed anything worthy of death (Acts 25:1-12). Those opposed to the gospel may seek to harm you or bring charges they can't prove.

Festus told King Agrippa that the Jews had points of disagreement about their own religion and concerning Jesus who Paul said was alive. When King Agrippa said he would like to hear Paul, Festus brought him to the Emperor (Acts 25:13-27). Bold witnesses seek every opportunity to share the gospel, even to people of influence when it is uncomfortable.

Paul said he was glad to make his defense before King Agrippa since he was an expert about Jewish customs and questions. Paul said he lived as a Pharisee and stood trial "for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers." He asked why it seemed incredible if God raised the dead. Paul admitted doing many things hostile to the name of Jesus by locking Christians in prisons, casting his vote to put them to death and pursuing them in foreign cities (Acts 26:1-11). Bold witnesses share briefly about their lives before trusting Christ.

On his way to Damascus, Paul saw a bright light from heaven and heard a voice asking why he was persecuting Him. After asking, 'Who art Thou, Lord?' the Lord said, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting'. . . . to appoint him as a minister and witness of what he saw and appear to him being delivered from the Jews and Gentiles 'to whom I am sending you, to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the domain of Satan to God, in order that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me' (Acts 26:12-18). Bold witnesses share how they trusted Christ so people know what to believe.

Paul told King Agrippa he was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but kept declaring to those in Damascus, Jerusalem, Judea and the Gentiles that they should repent, turn to God and perform deeds appropriate to repentance. He spoke what the Prophets and Moses said would take place, that Christ would suffer and be the first to proclaim light to the Jews and Gentiles after His resurrection (Acts 26:19-23). Bold witnesses share how their life changed after trusting Christ.

Festus said loudly that Paul's learning was driving him mad. He asked King Agrippa if he believed the Prophets. He said in a short time that Paul would persuade him to become a Christian. Paul said he hoped all listening become like him except for the chains (Acts 26:24-29). Bold witnesses ask people to believe in Christ.

King Agrippa said Paul did nothing worthy of death or imprisonment. He said that might have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar (Acts 26:30-32). Bold witnesses are willing to suffer consequences so they can share their faith.

1. Write down and practice sharing your personal testimony including your life before Christ, how you came to know Christ and how your life changed afterward

2. Ask God to lead you to people where you can share your testimony of Christ
3. Ask for boldness and be available to share your testimony with people of influence

Letting the Holy Spirit Lead in Evangelism (Insights in NT)

Jarram Barrs wrote concerning Philip in Acts 8, "Our hearts magnify the Lord’s saving work in drawing this man to himself. We do not read this story and think, ‘Wasn’t Philip a wonderful, clever, and bold evangelist!’ Rather, we praise God. This is as it ought to be whenever we hear of a believer leading someone to faith, for then, in just the same way as in this Bible story, God is bringing two people together. We need to learn to see God’s work rather than thinking how courageous, intelligent, clear-speaking, and good we are as evangelists. I am not saying the human role is unimportant, for Philip needed to be obedient to the Spirit’s call; he needed to talk to the Ethiopian and to make the Scriptures clear to him. Yet, because of the way the story is told, we know that God is the One who is most to be praised when we read of this man’s conversion. May this be our daily experience, O Lord! May we worship You!" As Michael Green said, "Every initiative in evangelism recorded in Acts is the initiative of the Spirit of God."

Saul agreed putting Stephen to death and dragged men and women to put them to prison. A great persecution scattered the church in Jerusalem throughout Judea and Samaria, exept the apostles (Acts 8:1-3). God uses persecution to spread His people into strategic locations for the gospel.

Those who were scattered preached the word, including Philip in the city of Samaria proclaiming Christ. The multitudes with one accord gave attention when they heard and saw the signs Philip performed. He cast out unclean spirits and healed the paralyzed and lame causing much rejoicing in the city (Acts. 8:4-8). God uses gospel preaching coupled with miraculous spiritual, emotional and physical healing to get peoples' attention.

Simon got the attention of people when he performed magic arts calling him the "Great Power of God." They and Simon believed the good news of the kingdom of God and Jesus Christ that Philip preached before being baptized. Simon was constantly amazed with the great miracles as he continued with Philip (Acts 8:9-13). God proves that His power is superior to Satan's.

The apostles sent Peter and John to pray for those who believed in Samaria so they could receive the Holy Spirit. Simon offered them money when he saw the Spirit bestowed through the laying of the apostles' hands. Peter said his silver would perish with him if he did not repent of his heart filled with bitterness and the bondage of iniquity. Simon asked Peter to pray so nothing bad would come upon him (Acts 8:14-24). God demands a pure heart without selfish motives as the gospel moves in peoples' lives.

An angel led Philip on a desert road between Jerusalem and Gaza to meet an Ethiopian eunuch who came to Jerusalem to worship. The Spirit told Philip to ask if the eunuch understood his reading from the prophet Isaiah. The eunuch said he needed a guide and invited Philip to sit in the chariot with him. The text said, "He was led as a sheep to slaughter; and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, . . . For His life is removed from the earth." The eunuch asked if it referred to the prophet or someone else. Beginning with this Scripture, Philip preached Jesus to him. After the eunuch said he believed that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, Philip baptized him. When they both came out of the water, the Spirit snatched Philip away to Azotus where he kept preaching the gospel to all the cities until he came to Caesarea (Acts 8:25-40). The Holy Spirit guides you in making the gospel clear to those prepared by God.

Have you experienced the Holy Spirit leading you to someone so you could preach the gospel to them? Each day, ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to people prepared by God and listen throughout the day for His instructions.

Spiritual Approach to Evangelism (Insights in NT)

12/16/2011

There are many mechanical or rote presentations of the gospel that a person can learn like the Four Spiritual Laws, Explosion Explosion and the Bridge. God's word won't return void when it is preached. But is there a higher spiritual level for greater effectiveness for evangelism and ministry to others? I believe so!

Martha served, Lazarus reclined with Jesus and Mary anointed the feet of Jesus, filling the house with the fragrance of costly perfume. Jesus told Judas that the poor would always be around unlike Him when questioned why the perfume wasn't sold to give to the poor (John 12:1-8). Worship and prayer to God has priority over service.

The multitude came to see Lazarus and Jesus whom He raised from the dead. The chief priests wanted to put Lazarus to death because many Jews believed in Him (John 12:9-11). Believe that God can perform miracles.

The multitude took palm branches and cried out, "Blessed in He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel," while Jesus rode on a donkey. The multitude were bearing Him witness because He raised Lazarus from the dead. The Pharisees said "the world has gone after Him" (John 12:12-19). Bear witness of Christ after seeing Him do miracles.

Jesus said the hour came for the Son of Man to be glorified. If a grain wheat dies without remaining alone, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it, but he who hates this life in this world will keep it to life eternal. Those who serve Christ will follow Him where He is and be honored by the Father (John 12:20-26). Bear fruit by losing your life for Christ's sake.

The multitude heard a voice out of heaven to show judgment was upon this world and its ruler would be cast out. Jesus draws all men to Himself when He is lifted up from the earth. Those who believe in the light as sons of light won't be overtaken by darkness. Jesus quoted Isaiah explaining why they could not believe: He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts lest they see, perceive, be converted and Jesus heal them. Many rulers believed but did not confess Him as they loved the approval of men rather than God (John 12:27-43). Confess Jesus openly before men shows you love God's approval.

Believing in Jesus is the same as believing in God. He who believes in Him will not remain in darkness. He came to save the world, not judge it. If you reject God's word, you will be judged in the last day. Jesus spoke what God told Him to say, which is eternal life (John 12:44-50). Speak life-giving words by saying only what God tells you.

To develop a spiritual approach to evangelism and personal ministry, do the following:
1. Develop a worship and prayer life
2. Believe that God performs miracles
3. Bear witness of Christ when you see miracles
4. Bear fruit by losing your life for Christ's sake
5. Confess Jesus openly before men shows you love God's approval
6. Speak life-giving words by saying only what God tells you

Compassion Makes Gospel Beautiful (insights in NT)

I grew up in a church that focused on compassion and justice with hurting people. After I became a believer in an evangelical, Bible church, proclaiming the gospel and discipling people toward spiritual maturity was our sole concern. Who's right? Both! In Matt. 11, Christ emphasized sharing the gospel. In this study from Matt. 12, Christ addresses compassion. We need a balanced Christianity to follow in the footsteps of Christ and  be attractive to the world.

Jesus and His disciples ate on the Sabbath. He used it as a teaching opportunity to show the priority of compassion over sacrificial good works (Matt. 12:1-7). When Christ says He "desires compassion,"the word, desire, literally means "pressing into action" or doing the will of God. Compassion literally means mercy or "special and immediate regard to the misery which is the consequence of sins." In Matt. 11, sharing the gospel through evangelism allows people to experience God's grace and forgiveness of sin. Afterward, God's compassion and mercy address the consequences of sin rather than passing judgment or condemnation on them.

Christ illustrated compassion and mercy by healing the man with a withered hand on the Sabbath (Matt. 12:8-13). The Pharisees responded to real human need with judgment and accusations (Matt. 12:10,14). Jesus came not only to see and save the lost but to proclaim and model compassion and justice by healing hurting humanity (Luke 19:10; Matt. 12:18-21). We see another illustration of Jesus demonstrating compassion when He casted out demons from a blind and dumb man. The Pharisees came to rescue, opposing Christ again.  Jesus called their bluff and said they were nuts to think Satan motivated Him to cast out demons (Matt. 12:22-29).

Jesus then addresses the root of compassion. Why are some people compassionate and others not? He explained blasphemy of the Holy Spirit as resistance against the convincing power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus implied the Pharisees lacked compassion because they rejected Him (Matt. 12:30-32). When we share the gospel and someone rejects it by not believing, they are blaspheming the Holy Spirit. At the point of faith, God justifies or declares them righteous like Abraham when he believed God (Gen. 15:6).

Christ moves from unbelievers to addressing believers. Our testimony to the world is in large part determined by the words we speak (Matt. 12:33-37). A different Greek word for "justify" is used in Matt. 12:37. Instead of declaring us righteous, our words justify or bring out the essence of our personhood by revealing our character. Our words can be idle and unprofitable or active and profitable to stir people to love and good works (Heb. 10:24-25). Ask yourself: Do I build others up or tear them down? Do I encourage or discourage others. Do I unify or divide people? Both unbelievers and believers can lack compassion.

Unfortunately, the church has been its own worst enemy in repelling people from the gospel by the caustic words we share with one another and the outside world. The world condemns us because of our lack of compassion expressed through divisive words (Matt. 12:37).

Even the church can get caught in the quest for signs or miracles by focusing on worldly marketing techniques instead of pursuing an authentic relationship with Christ (Matt. 12:38-45). Selling our soul out to celebrity and media-hype publicity to win a hearing degenerates our character so our last state becomes worst than the first (Matt. 12:45). In contrast, Christ is looking for those who do His will by relating intimately with Him as His brother or sister (Matt. 12:46-50).

Ask God to impart love and compassion in your life as a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Who can you come alongside and show love? What will compassion look like?

How To Refocus Your Priority On Evangelism (insights in NT)

8/14/2010

Picture
I became a Christian in 1970 at Iowa State University during the Jesus Movement through the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. Their emphasis was preaching the gospel of Christ. We saw many people come to faith in Christ because the gospel was preached. Over the years, I have observed many great programs, but the proclamation of the gospel is deemphasized. Social justice is becoming popular,  but evangelism is falling on hard times. Both are needed. Matt. 11 provides input to help all of us refocus and prioritize evangelism as the first step in seeing lives transformed.

After Jesus instructed the disciples on gospel of kingdom ministry in Matt. 10, He continued teaching and preaching in their cities (Matt. 11:1). His purpose was to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10).

The last item listed in Matt. 11:5, "the poor having the gospel preached to them," is the only one requiring human initiative. The blind will not receive sight, lame walk, lepers cleansed, deaf hear and dead raised up unless the gospel of Christ is proclaimed and believed (Is. 35:5-6).

It's true that few believers are preaching the gospel. Studies less than 10% are actively sharing their faith. It's also true that many people refuse to believe the gospel. What roadblocks must be cleared out so we prioritize the preaching of the gospel and for people to believe the message so the blind, lame, lepers, deaf and dead are transformed (Matt. 11:5).

Matthew addresses those who proclaim the gospel first. Like John the Baptist, we must adjust how we view Christ and His work. While in prison, John asked the disciples to send him word whether he should be looking for someone else who would baptize with fire (Matt. 3:11-12; 11:2-3). John expected Christ to judge sinners, but learned His purpose on earth was to show mercy (blind receiving sight, lame walking, etc.). God's love and grace trumped law and wrath.

Rather than criticizing John the Baptist's mistaken notions, Christ praises him for his sacrifice in living out his mission in the wilderness instead of a plush palace (Matt. 11:7-11). How does that relate to us? John was the greatest and last Old Testament prophet. You and I, even the least of us, is greater than John, in Christ's eyes (Matt. 11:11). Seeing how valuable we are in Christ's eyes as a new creation makes all the difference in how we prioritize our job as His ambassador in sharing the gospel with others (2 Cor. 5:17-21). Ambassador is defined as a diplomatic official of the highest rank appointed and accredited as representative in residence by one government or sovereign to another, usually for a specific length of time.

Matthew next addresses those who hear the good news of Christ. The children in Jesus' parable react with frustration because no one will join them in their music because of stubbornness (Matt. 11:16-17). Many people aren't teachable and open. They won't listen to the message of Christ. The Pharisees criticized John because of his extremes in living outside the mainstream. They said Jesus had a demon for the opposite behavior, mixing with sinners (Matt. 11:18-19). Neither could win! Indifference and pride dulled the Pharisees hearing so they wouldn't believe either John's or Christ's message.

Christ applied it more broadly to include hearers of the message in any city where his miracles were done (Matt. 11:20-24). Will recipients of the gospel humble themselves and repent? As people understand God's law for judgment of sin, they will begin to understand their need for the gospel (Rom. 3:19-20).

How will someone come to this realization? God will hide the gospel from the worldly wise but reveal Himself to those with childlike faith. He removes the veil from blind eyes so they see the light of the glory of Christ (2 Cor. 4:3-4). The key is to not adulterate the word of God for personal gain, but to commend, literally meaning to "stand together with someone," ourselves to every man's conscience, literally meaning "know together with someone" (2 Cor. 4:2). In other words, we develop friendships of equality and mutual give-and-take. As our relationship progresses, we develop trust and learn what makes them tick. Our speech can be targeted to meet them at their point of need with the gospel, trusting God to open their hearts to believe it (Matt. 11:26-27).

We invite both the communicators and those who hear the message to remove the heavy yoke--self-pride, self-righteousness, self-sacrifice, self-promotion, self-assertion, and selfishness--replace it with the easy, light, life-giving and freedom-producing yoke of Christ (Matt. 11:28-30).

What is the heavy yoke you are carrying. Come to Christ right now and exchange your heavy yoke with His life-giving yoke. Ask God to lead you to relationships where you can be His ambassador of reconciliation.
