James explains how to gain a life-giving faith. Those who persevere joyfully in trials, study and apply God's word, love their rich and poor neighbors, express good works through their faith, praise God with their tongue and choose heavenly wisdom gain spiritual maturity, receive crown of life, express pure religion, show mercy and active faith, prevent corruption and bear righteousness.

Persevere Joyfully in Trials
When Christians considered trials as pure joy when their faith was tested, they developed perseverance, maturity and completeness without lacking anything. God gave generously without finding fault if they asked Him for wisdom in faith without doubts and double-mindedness. Those in humble circumstances were in a high position compared to the rich who faded away like a flower. Those who persevered under trial received the crown of life promised to those who loved God. Temptations were caused by evil desires. If birthed sin after conception leading to death when full-grown. Every good and perfect gift came from the Father of the heavenly lights who chose to birth people through the word of truth as firstfruits of all He created (James 1:1-18). Persevere joyfully in trials for spiritual maturity to gain the crown of life.

Study and Apply God's Word
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger in becoming righteous without moral filth. They humbly received the word implanted for salvation. Deception occurred when those listened to the word without obedience like looking in a mirror and forgetting what they looked like. Blessing came to those who looked intently and did according to the perfect law of liberty. Those who did not rein their tongue deceived themselves and had worthless religion. People with pure and faultless religion looked after orphans and widows in their distress and kept themselves unstained by the world (James 1:19-27). Study and apply God's word by speaking carefully, looking after orphans and widows and refusing worldliness.

Love Rich and Poor Neighbors
If believers showed favoritism or gave special attention to a rich person and discriminated against the poor, they became judges with evil motives. God chose the poor to be rich in faith and inherit the kingdom promised to those who love Him. The rich exploited, dragged people into court and slandered peoples' good name. People did good and kept the royal law by loving their neighbor as themselves. They sinned by showing favoritism. Whoever kept the whole law and stumbled in one point was guilty of breaking it. Judgment without mercy was shown to anyone who had not been merciful. Mercy triumphed over judgment (James 2:1-13). Love rich and poor neighbors by showing mercy and not judgment.

Express Good Works Through Your Active Faith
If someone told a brother or sister without clothes and daily food to be warm and well fed without helping their physical needs, his faith was worthless. Faith without works was dead and useless. Demons believed and shudder. Abraham was considered righteous when he offered his son Isaac on the altar. Faith and actions worked together to complete his faith by what he did. Abraham was called God's friend after he believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. People considered Rahab the prostitute righteous when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them in a different direction (James 2:14-26). Express good works through your active faith.

Praise God with Your Tongue
Those who presumed to be teachers were judged more strictly. By not stumbling in speech, they kept their body in check. Small parts like bits, rudders and tongues directed horses, ships and people, respectively. A small spark set a great forest on fire. Likewise, the tongue corrupted and set on fire the whole person being from hell, evil and full of deadly poison. The tongue praised God and cursed men who were made in His likeness. Fresh and salt water could not flow from the same spring. A salt spring could not produce fresh water (James 3:1-12). Praise God with your tongue to prevent corruption.

Choose Heavenly and Pure Wisdom
A wise and understanding person produced deeds done in humility. Bitter envy and selfish ambition that were earthly, unspiritual and devilish tempted a person to boast or deny it. It contained disorder and every evil practice. Wisdom from heaven was pure, peace loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sowed in peace raised a harvest of righteousness (James 3:13-18). Choose heavenly and pure wisdom as a peacemaker who bears a harvest of righteousness.

To gauge the condition of your faith, rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 (one being lowest and ten the highest) in the following areas:
1. Persevere joyfully in trials to gain spiritual maturity and crown of life
2. Study and apply God's word to express pure religion
3. Love your rich and poor neighbors to show mercy
4. Express good works through your active faith
5. Praise God with your tongue to prevent corruption
6. Choose heavenly wisdom to bear righteousness

Equip Older Men and Women To Disciple Young People (Insights in NT)

Elders should lay a foundation of sound doctrine and focus on teaching older men and women so they can disciple young people in godly living to attract others to Christ.

Appoint Godly Elders To Oversee God's Work
Paul was an apostle of Jesus Christ for the knowledge of truth that led to godliness. It rested on the hope of eternal life that God promised. He  brought His word to light through the preaching entrusted to him by God's  command. Paul left Titus in Crete to straighten out unfinished business and appoint elders in every town.  An elder must be blameless, husband of one wife. His children must believe without being wild and disobedient. An elder who oversees God's work must not be overbearing, quick-tempered, given to much wine, violent, and pursuing dishonest gain. Instead he must be hospitable, love what was good, self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined (Tit. 1:1-8). Appoint godly elders to oversee God's work who model purity in their personal and family lives.

Lay Proper Foundation by Encouraging Sound Doctrine and Refuting False Teaching
An elder must hold firmly to the trustworthy message, encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. He must silence rebellious people who deceived and ruined households for dishonest gain. One of their own prophets said Cretans were "always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons." Elders must rebuke them sharply so they would be sound in the faith. They must avoid Jewish myths or commands among those who reject the truth. To the pure all things were pure but to the corrupted and unbelievers, nothing was pure. Claiming to know God, their actions showed they denied Him being unfit for anything good (Tit. 1:9-16). Lay proper foundation by encouraging sound doctrine and refuting false teaching to prevent ruined lives.

Teach Sound Doctrine to Older Men and Women
Teach sound doctrine to older men so they would be temperate, respectful, self-controlled, sound in faith and loving with endurance. Teach older women to be reverent and not slanderous or addicted to much wine so they could teach what was good. They should train the younger women to love their husbands and children, be self-controlled, pure, busy at home, kind and subject to their husbands so no one would malign the word of God. Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled as an example by doing what was good. Timothy's teaching should show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech so opponents could not condemn them (Tit. 2:1-8). Teach sound doctrine to older men and women so they can disciple younger people in godly living.

Disciple People in God's Grace to Attract Others to Christ
Teach employees to be subject their bosses so they could be fully trusted by not talking back or stealing to make the teaching about God our Savior attractive. His grace that brought salvation appeared to all men. It taught them to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, but to live self-controlled and godly lives in this present age. They waited for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of Jesus Christ who redeemed them from all wickedness and purified for Himself a people eager to do what was good. They were to teach, encourage and rebuke these things with all authority without being despised (Tit. 2:9-15). Disciple people in God's grace to live godly in all spheres to attract others to Christ.

Allow Grace Motivate You to Obey Authority and Do Good Works
Remind people to be subject and obedient to all authorities. They were to slander no one, but be peaceable, considerate and show humility toward all men. They had been foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by passions and pleasures with envy and hate. But when the kindness and love of Jesus appeared, He saved them not because of their righteous deeds, but because of His mercy through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit poured out generously through Christ. Being justified by His grace, they became heirs with the hope of eternal life so they could be careful to devote themselves to good works (Tit. 3:1-8). Allow God's grace motivate you to humbly obey every authority and do good works.

Live Productive Lives by Avoiding Useless Quarrels and Confronting Divisiveness
Avoid foolish and useless controversies, arguments and quarrels about the law. Warn a divisive person up to two times and then have nothing to do with him since he was warped, sinful and self-condemned. Paul asked Timothy to come see him and help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos with everything they need. Everyone must learn to devote themselves to doing what was good to provide for daily necessities and not live unproductive lives (Tit. 3:9-15). Live productive lives by avoiding useless quarrels and confronting divisiveness.

Let me ask these questions:
1. Are godly elders in your city overseeing God's work?
2. Are they laying a proper foundation by encouraging sound doctrine and refuting false teaching?
3. Are elders teaching sound doctrine to older men and women?
4. Are older people discipling younger people?

5. Are others being attracted to Christ?
6. Are discipled believers obeying every authority and doing good works?
7. Are church members living productively and avoiding useless quarrels and divisions?

How to Free People From Satan's Snares (Insights in NT)

In order to free those ensnared by Satan through selfishness, pleasure and religion,  handle God's word accurately,  be empowered by the Holy Spirit and strong teamwork, preach the word in evangelism without shame, and equip faithful men in God's word to do good works.

Be Empowered By the Holy Spirit
Paul, an apostle of Christ, wrote to Timothy, his dear son, thanking God for constantly remembering him in prayer, longing to see him and being filled with joy. Paul reminded Timothy to fan into flame his faith passed down from his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice as God's gift. He did not give anyone a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, love and self-discipline (2 Tim. 1:1-7). Be empowered by the Holy Spirit in power, love and self-discipline.

Be Unashamed as You Proclaim the Gospel
Be unashamed about the Lord and His messengers. Join in suffering for the gospel who saved and called everyone to a holy life by God's own purpose and grace through Jesus Christ. He destroyed death and brought life and immortality through the gospel. God appointed Paul a herald, apostle and teacher to suffer unashamedly. He knew God and convinced that He was able to guard what he entrusted to Him for that day. Paul commanded Timothy to guard the deposit of sound teaching he heard with faith and love in Christ including the help of the Holy Spirit. Everyone in the province of Asia deserted Paul, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. He asked the Lord to show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, He refreshed, helped and unashamed of Paul's chains (2 Tim. 1:8-18). Be unashamed as you proclaim the gospel and serve His messengers.

Entrust God's Word to Faithful Men
Paul commanded Timothy to be strong in grace and entrust God's deposit to faithful men who could teach others. By enduring hardship as a good soldier of Christ and not involving himself in civilian affairs, he would please His commanding officer. By competing as an athlete and  following the rules, he would receive the victor's crown. As a hardworking farmer, he would be the first to share in the crops. By reflecting on these things, the Lord provided insight (2 Tim. 2:1-7). Entrust God's word to faithful men who teach others as you endure hardship, follow rules and work hard.

Handle God's Word Accurately
Remember Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David, so people suffer and endure everything for the gospel enabling others to obtain salvation for eternal glory. Die to live and endure to reign. By disowning Him, you disown yourself. God remained faithful in the midst of faithlessness since He cannot disown Himself. Remind people of these things and warn against quarreling about words to prevent ruin. Present self as an approved workman without shame correctly handing the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter that spread like gangrene leading to further ungodliness, wandering and destroying faith.  Everyone who confessed the Lord's name must turn away from wickedness (2 Tim. 2:8-19). Handle God's word accurately to reign with Christ and people obtain salvation.

Teach Gently and Lead Those Ensnared By Satan
A large house contained articles for honorable and dishonorable purposes. Be cleansed from dishonorable ones to become a holy instrument useful to the Master and prepared for any good work. Flee youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Refuse foolish and stupid arguments that produced quarrels but be kind and able to teach gently so God granted repentance leading to the knowledge of truth. They came to their senses and escaped from the devil's trap who took them captive to do his will (2 Tim. 2:20-26). Teach gently and lead those ensnared by Satan toward repentance and the knowledge of the truth.

Avoid Selfish, Pleasure-Seeking and Religious Men
In the last days, have nothing to do with men who love  themselves, love money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of good, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God and had a form of godliness but denied its power. They wormed their ways into homes and gained control over weak-willed women loaded down with sins and evil desires. Having depraved minds, they always learn but never able to acknowledge the truth (2 Tim. 3:1-9). Avoid selfish, pleasure-seeking and religious men who do not acknowledge the truth.

Use Your Life and God's Word to Equip in Good Works
Timothy knew about Paul's teaching, way of life, purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecution and sufferings.  God rescued him from persecutions in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra. Everyone who wanted to live godly was persecuted. Continue learning and being convinced knowing those from whom you learned it. From infancy Timothy knew the holy Scriptures making him wise for salvation through faith in Christ. All Scriptures were inspired by God and profitable for teaching, reproof, correction and training in righteousness so the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:10-17). Use your life and God's word to equip people in every good work.

Preach the Word Longing for Christ's Second Coming
In the presence of God, preach the Word in every season. Correct, rebuke and encourage with patience and careful instruction. A time would come when men did not endure sound doctrine but gathered many teachers to say what their itching ears wanted to hear. They rejected truth and followed myths. Paul commanded Timothy to endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist and discharge all duties of his ministry. Paul's sacrificial service proved he fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith. In the future the righteous Judge awarded him and others the crown of righteousness if they longed for His coming (2 Tim. 4:1-8). Preach the word and do evangelism as you long for Christ's Second Coming.

Develop Strong Teamwork to Fully Proclaim the Gospel
Paul asked Timothy to come quickly because Demas loved this world and deserted him along with two others except Luke. He asked Timothy to bring his cloak, scrolls and Mark as he was helpful in ministry. Paul warned Timothy to be guard since Alexander the metalworker strongly opposed his message. At Paul's first defense, everyone deserted him. God strengthened Paul to fully proclaim His message so all Gentiles might hear it. The Lord would rescue him from evil attack to be brought safely to His heavenly kingdom. Paul asked Timothy to greet Priscilla, Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus. Erastus stayed in Corinth and left Trophimus sick in Miletus. He asked Timothy to come before winter. Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers greeted him (2 Tim. 4:9-22). Develop strong teamwork to fully proclaim the gospel in the midst of desertion and opposition.

In order to free people from the devil's snares, do the following:
1. Handle God's word accurately
2. Be empowered by the Holy Spirit and strong teamwork
3. Preach the word in evangelism without shame
4. Equip faithful men in God's word to do good works

What Would Happen If We Turn On Our Dream Machine? (insights from N.T.)

8/5/2010

Picture

When I was 10 years old, I dreamt of being an archeologist. However, I gave up that dream because of the discouraging voices of adults and friends. I know of others who gave up their dreams of being doctors or even president of the US because adults around them said, "Let's be realistic. You could never do that! No one in our family has even gone to college!" Perhaps you gave up on a dream as well due to the criticism your dream received.

Studies show the age of 7 is peak year for dreaming. But as we grow older, we stop dreaming. I surmise it is because of the criticism our dreams receive in the name of "reality." But what if people were put in an environment where they were not only allowed to dream, but encouraged to?

Unfortunately, I think even in the church, we stop dreaming. We continue the same programs for 10 years or more without evaluating whether we see peoples' lives transformed. For many years, I thought my only responsibility was to share the gospel instead of ministering to the total person (spiritual, emotional, mental and physical needs)

People with great dreams and faith brought a paralytic to Jesus (Matt.9:2,6). We learned in an earlier blog post that faith is demonstrated in the following ways:
1. Show humility and confidence in Christ's power to heal (Matt. 8:2-3)

2. Offer specific requests (Matt. 8:6)
3. Submit to Christ's authority (Matt. 8:8-9)
4. Show faith in Christ's power to heal (Matt. 8:10)

Today’s paralytics are powerless, weak and without strength. They have lost the ability to dream since life has beat them down being economically disadvantaged or lacking ability to make a living. They need basic skills and practical vocational training. If people see Christ healing people in concrete, physical ways, they are more apt to believe He can heal spiritually, emotionally and mentally.

Do you realize that God has delegated this same power that heals “paralytics” to us? A little phrase at the end of Matt. 9:8 says "God, who had given such authority to men." How should we use this power? It’s tempting for me to build a nest egg or pursue success in this world rather than getting my hands dirty with the “paralytics” who need basic life skills. Jesus spent time with tax gatherers and sinners. That's why He came to earth. It’s easier to continue our programs and follow their rules rather than spend time with the needy (Matt. 9:9-13). He calls us to sacrifice our comfort zone and our most precious commodity, time. Read what New Testament scholar N. T. Wright says:

"One of the things I have most enjoyed about being a bishop is watching ordinary Christians (not that there are any "ordinary" Christians, but you know what I mean) going straight from worshipping Jesus in church to making a radical difference in the material lives of people down the street by running playgroups for children of single working moms; by organizing credit unions to help people at the bottom of the financial ladder find their way to responsible solvency; by campaigning for better housing, against dangerous road, for drug rehab centers, for wise laws relating to alcohol, for decent library and sporting facilities, for a thousand other things in which God's sovereign rule extends to hard, concrete reality. Once again, all this is not an extra to the mission of the church. It is central."[i]

Items listed in the preceding paragraph are the new wineskins required to preserve the new wine through miracles of healing. Matthew illustrates the dimensions of transformation in the following ways (Matt. 9:16-33):
1. A synagogue official took the initiative in coming to Jesus believing that He could raise his daughter from the dead symbolizing the power of the gospel to forgive those dead in sin (Matt. 9:18,23-26) (spiritual healing)

2. A woman bleeding for 12 years believed that touching Christ's garment would make her well (Matt. 9:20-22). We stop the bleeding by discipling people so they touch Christ through an intimate relationship with Him (mental healing).

3. Two blind men followed Jesus asking for mercy (Matt. 9:27-31). For people to experience God's love and mercy, healing prayer and God's words must address sins of the past, destructive beliefs, emotional & spiritual pain and curses & oppression (emotional healing)

4. Jesus cast out a demon from a dumb man allowing him to speak (Matt. 9:32-33). Once physical, spiritual, mental and emotional healing occur, we can cast out remaining demons and fill people with the Holy Spirit through meditation on God's word so they can minister and speak to others for their total healing (Spirit-filled healing ministry).

Our desire to seek holistic, supernatural healing among today's tax gatherers and sinners will be opposed by the religious establishment (Matt. 9:34).

How will we recruit those with radical faith to minister in our cities? We must pray because the laborers are few and the needs are great  (Matt. 9:35-38).

Begin to pray for additional workers to be called into our cities. Don't be surprised if God calls you to be a part of the solution as seen in Matt. 10:1.

How to Supercharge Your Good Works

7/2/2010

Picture
How do you respond to tough times like a divorce, job loss, soured relationship or addiction we can't overcome? In our heart, we want to be available to help others, but these trials keep us self-focused so it becomes difficult to serve our fellow man.  Are our good works sufficient without the power of God?

God uses human hands as instruments to demonstrate His power and to serve others. Rahab, a prostitute with her own issues of addiction, protected two spies as they viewed Jericho (Josh. 2:2-5).

They reported back to Joshua that God's miraculous power was already operating: “The Lord gave land into Israel’s hands as the hearts of the inhabitants melted away” (Josh. 2:24). God instructed the nation of Israel that relying on His power would result in Him doing a miraculous work (
Josh. 3:3-6). The Canaanites would be defeated and the Jordan River would part in two (Josh. 3:10-17). God will do the same in your life with the issue you are facing today.

We can try many good works to help our fellow man, but setting ourselves apart to God by following His leading will position us for maximum impact. It worked for Rahab and the nation of Israel when they relied on God's power. Relying on God moment by moment enables us to defeat evil spiritual forces through the miracles He provides.

What difference will it make if you recognize God is alive today? What obstacle are you facing where you need God's supernatural work? Do you believe God will supercharge your good works?
