Discipling Culture of a Model Church (Insights in NT)

The church at Thessalonica was a model church for us to follow. They shared the gospel everywhere; discipled others; helped people stand firm in the faith; pursued holiness, love and economic independence; encouraged one another because of Christ's coming again; lived with faith, love and hope in Christ; and fostered holistic transformation. The benefits: served God in faith, love and hope; received glory and reward from God; discovered real life;  won respect of unbelievers; lived with God forever; knew Christ was coming back; and sanctified spirit, soul and body.
Let's examine the discipling culture of a model church that enabled it to share the gospel everywhere.

Share the Gospel Everywhere
Paul thanked God in his prayers for their work produced by faith, labor prompted by love and endurance inspired by hope in Christ. God loved and chose them because their gospel came with the Holy Spirit's power and deep conviction, not only with words. After imitating Paul and the Lord, they joyfully welcomed the message given by the Holy Spirit. They became a model to all believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord's message became known everywhere as they turned to Him from idols and served the living and true God. He raised Jesus from the dead who rescued them from the coming wrath (1 Thess. 1:1-10). Share the gospel everywhere so people turn from idols and serve the living God in faith, love and hope.

Disciple Others Like Mother and Father
In spite of strong opposition, Paul and his team shared the gospel without error or impure motives. Being entrusted with the gospel, they spoke as men approved by God. They never tried to please men, used flattery, covered up greed or looked for men's praise.  As apostles of Christ, they were like a gentle mother loving and caring for her children. They shared not only the gospel, but their own lives as they worked hard not to be a financial burden. As a father dealt with his children, they encouraged, comforted and urged them to live lives worthy of God. Their reception of God's word enabled them to endure suffering from their peers. Satan stopped Paul from seeing them. They were his hope, glory, joy and crown when Christ came back (1 Thess. 2:1-20). Disciple others like a nursing mother and exhorting father to receive your glory and reward from God.

Help People Stand Firm in Their Faith
While in Athens, Paul sent Timothy to strengthen and encourage them in their faith during trials and temptations. Even though they were destined for persecution, Paul showed concern about them walking away from their faith. He was encouraged when Timothy brought good news about their steadfast faith and love. Paul really lived when they stood firm in the Lord. He thanked God for his joy in God's presence because of them. Paul prayed earnestly to supply what was lacking in their faith. He asked the Lord to increase their love for others and strengthen their hearts to be blameless in God's presence (1 Thess. 3:1-13). Help people stand firm in their faith so you discover real life.

Pursue Holiness, Love and Economic Independence
It was God's will for them to be holy by avoiding sexual immorality, passionate lust or taking advantage of their brother. He punished men for such sins since He called them to holiness, not impurity. They rejected God and the Holy Spirit by ignoring this instruction. Paul urged them to love their brothers even more as God taught them. A quiet life should be their ambition as they minded their own business and worked with their hands to win the respect of outsiders without dependence on anybody (1 Thess. 4:1-12).
Pursue holiness. love and economic independence to win the respect of unbelievers.

Encourage One Another Because of Christ's Coming Again
They were not to grieve like those without hope since Christ died, rose again and brought with Him those who died. The Lord would come down from heaven with the trumpet call of God and the dead in Christ would rise first. Those still alive would be caught up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. They were to encourage each other knowing they would be with the Lord forever (1 Thess. 4:13-18). Encourage one another because of Christ coming again to live with Him forever.

Live with Faith, Love and Hope in Christ
The day of the Lord would come like a thief in the night while people were saying, "Peace and safety." Destruction would come suddenly like labors pains on a pregnant woman. This day should not surprise them since they were sons of the light being alert, self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate and the hope of salvation as a helmet. Since God did not appoint them to wrath, but receive salvation through Christ by living together with Him, they should encourage and build each other up (1 Thess. 4:13-5:11). Live with faith, love and hope in Christ knowing He is coming back anytime.

Foster Holistic Transformation
They should respect and regard highly those over them in the Lord who work hard and admonish them. They should warn the idle, encourage the timid, help the weak and be patient with everyone. They were to be kind to everyone, joyful always, pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances because this was God's will for them in Christ. They should not put out the Spirit's fire, not treat prophecies with contempt, test everything, hold on to the good and avoid every kind of evil. Paul prayed the God of peace would sanctify them entirely so their spirit, soul and body would be blameless at the coming of Christ. God would do it because He was faithful. Paul asked for prayer, greet everyone and read the letter to all the brothers (1 Thess. 5:12-28). Foster holistic transformation by respecting church leaders, ministering practically to the needy, expressing gratitude, leading by the Holy Spirit and praying for sanctification of peoples' spirit, soul and body.

Which of the following benefits motivate you to share the gospel and be discipled to multiply your impact in the world?
1. Serve God in faith, love and hope
2. Receive glory and reward from God
3. Discover real life
4. Win respect of unbelievers
5. Live with God forever
6. Know Christ is coming back
7. Sanctify spirit, soul and body

Ingredients for Powerful Discipleship Ministry (Insights in NT)

We should not ask, "What is wrong with the world?" for that diagnosis has already been given. Rather, we should ask, "What has happened to the salt and light?" (John R. W. Stott).

Paul asked that prayer for unity in Christ and hope in the Holy Spirit empowered the proclamation of the gospel so people were transformed in their character, knowledge and ministry. His plan considered spiritual, emotional and financial resources, ministry relationships and wise counsel required to disciple people so they believed and obeyed God's word in the context of community. These are the ingredients for a powerful discipleship ministry through the local church.

Pray for Endurance and Unity in Christ
Please your neighbor for his good by building him up. The insults you face have fallen on Christ. The Scriptures teach and provide endurance and encouragement so we have hope. Let’s pray that God who provides endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity as you follow Christ for His glory (Rom. 15:1-6). Pray that God provides endurance, encouragement and unity in Christ as revealed in the Bible.

Pray for Joy, Peace and Hope in Holy Spirit
Accept one another as Christ has accepted you. Christ became a servant of the Jews to confirm the promises made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob so the Gentiles would glorify God like David and Moses. Isaiah prophesied that Christ would rule over the nations so the Gentiles would hope in Him. Let’s pray the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him so you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 15:7-13). Pray that God fills you with joy and peace as you trust in Him so you overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Proclaim Gospel to Develop People Completely

You are full of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another. Paul was a minister of Christ Jesus in proclaiming the gospel of God so Gentiles could be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. He spoke of nothing except what Christ accomplished through him in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what he said and did through the power of the Holy Spirit in miracles. From Jerusalem to Illyricum, Paul fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ where He was not known to not build upon someone else’s  foundation (Rom. 15:14-21). Proclaim fully the gospel of Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit so people are transformed in their character, knowledge and ministry.

Plan Every Aspect of Your Ministry
Paul planned to spend time and have the Romans assist him on his way to Spain. His short-term goal was to take a contribution from Macedonia and Achaia to the poor saints in Jerusalem. He wanted the Gentiles to share materially with the Jews since they had shared in their spiritual blessings. Paul asked them to join in his struggle by praying that he be rescued from Judean unbelievers and the Jerusalem saints would find his service acceptable. He desired to come to Rome with joy and to be refreshed with them (Rom. 15:22-33). Plan for the spiritual, emotional and financial resources to carry out your ministry.

Develop Close Ministry Relationships
Paul commended Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea, to receive help since she ministered to many people. He asked them to greet Priscilla and Aquila, Paul's fellow workers in Christ, who risked their lives for him and the Gentile churches. Paul asked that they greet the church that met in their home, the first convert to Christ in Asia, relatives in prison with him who were outstanding among the apostles and others who worked hard in the Lord (Rom. 16:1-16). Develop close relationships with ministry team members.

Pursue Wisdom in Fulfilling Your Ministry
Watch and keep away from those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way contrary to the teaching you learned. They deceive the minds of naive people through smooth talk and flattery. Be wise about what is good and innocent about what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet since the grace of Jesus is with you (Rom. 16:17-20). Pursue wisdom, stay away from division and deception, and trust God to crush Satan under your feet.

Disciple People in God's Word Through Community
Paul mentioned that Timothy and his relatives, Lucius, Jason and Sosipater, sent their greetings. Tertius wrote the letter and greeted them in the Lord. Gaius and the whole church he enjoyed sent their greetings. Erasus, the city's public works director, and Paul's brother Quartus sent their greetings. He prayed that God would establish them in his proclamation of the gospel through the prophetic writings so all nations would believe and obey God to the glory of Christ (Rom. 16:21-27). Disciple people to believe and obey God's word in the context of community.

Here are seven ingredients for a powerful discipleship ministry through the local church from Rom. 15-16:

1. Pray that God provides endurance, encouragement and unity in Christ as revealed in the Bible
2. Pray that God fills you with joy and peace as you trust in Him so you overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit
3. Proclaim fully the gospel of Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit so people are transformed in their character, knowledge and ministry
4. Plan for the spiritual, emotional and financial resources to carry out your ministry
5. Develop close relationships with ministry team members

6. Pursue wisdom, stay away from division and deception, and trust God to crush Satan under your feet
7. Disciple people to believe and obey God's word in the context of community

Long-Term Benefits of Wisdom (Insights in Psalms)

Picture
Instead of craving riches and what other people possess, a wise person sees the value of hard work, which prevents poverty. Sexual lust and alcoholism may be pleasurable for the short-term, but it leads to disappointment and confusion. However, wisdom is sweet to the soul and gives security and hope for the future.  Wisdom and knowledge gained from many advisers allow your plans to succeed. Proverbs 23-24 shows the long-term benefits of wisdom.

Do not crave a ruler's or stingy man's deceptive food. You waste your compliments because their hearts are not with you. Do not overwork to gain temporary riches. Do not speak to a fool as he will scorn the wisdom of your words. Since God defends the fields of the fatherless, don't move the boundaries as He will take up their case against you (Prov. 23:1-11). Wisdom prevents the craving for riches and what other people possess.

Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to knowledge. Do not withhold discipline from a child as the rod will save his soul from death. A father's heart is glad when a son's heart is wise and his lips speak righteously. Do not envy sinners but always fear the Lord zealously because of future hope. Keep your heart on the right path. Don't join drunkards or gluttons who become poor (Prov. 23:12-21). Wisdom protects you from poverty caused by alcoholism and gluttony.

Get wisdom, discipline and understanding from your father and mother. The father of a wise son has great joy and delights in him. His righteousness protects him from prostitutes, wayward wife and alcoholism that multiplies unfaithfulness, confusion and dissatisfaction (Prov. 23:22-35). Parents' wisdom protects you from sexual lust and party spirit that lead to confusion and dissatisfaction.

Do not envy or desire the company of evil men since their hearts plot violence. By wisdom a house is built, through understanding it is established and through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures. A wise man has great power and a man of knowledge increases strength. Guidance and many advisers are required to wage a winning war. A fool has no wisdom to share with leaders. A schemer plots evil and men detest a mocker (Prov. 24:1-9).
Wisdom and knowledge from many advisers increase power and strength so you can adopt successful plans.

Those who falter in times of trouble have little strength. Rescue those being led away to death. God weighs hearts and repays according to what each has done. Those who find wisdom that is sweet to the soul have security and a future hope. A righteous man rises again even after falling seven times, but the wicked are brought down by calamity. If you gloat when your enemy falls, the Lord will turn his wrath away from him. Do not fret or be envious of the wicked who have no future hope (Prov. 24:10-20). Wisdom provides contentment and a future hope.

Fear the Lord and the king, but do not join the rebellious to be destroyed by calamity. People curse those who judge with partiality in telling the guilty that they are innocent. Rich blessing comes upon those who convict the guilty. An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips (Prov. 24:21-26). Wisdom enables blessing with discernment as you submit to the Lord and human authorities.

Finish your outdoor work and get your fields ready before building your house. Testify truthfully against your neighbor without deception or revenge. A lazy man lacks judgment because his field has thorns everywhere, his ground is covered with weeds and his stone wall is in ruins, resulting in poverty and scarcity (Prov. 24:27-34). Wisdom promotes hard work in your vocation to prevent poverty and scarcity.

Consider the long-term benefits of wisdom and choose the one that is most meaningful to apply:
1. Prevents the craving for riches and what other people possess
2. Protects you from poverty caused by alcoholism and gluttony
3. Protects you from sexual lust and party spirit that lead to confusion and dissatisfaction
4. Increase power and strength from many advisers leading to successful plans
5. Provides contentment and a future hope
6. Wisdom experiences blessing as it submits to the Lord and human authorities in discerning people truthfully
7. Wisdom promotes hard work in your vocation to prevent poverty and scarcity

Finding Hope in Hopeless Circumstances (Insights in Psalms)

5/17/2011

In those hopeless situations of life when everything seems to conspire against you, what are the answers? God seems no where! You feel completely along without a paddle. Do you give up? Do you work harder? Do you think positive thoughts figuring that it can't get any worse? Ps. 77 provides guidance and encouragement in dire situations.
When it seems hopeless and you are troubled, disturbed and without comfort, cry aloud to God because He will hear your prayers. Also, remember and meditate on God's past workings in your life (Ps. 77:1-6).

Your grief can be so great that you believe the Most High God has rejected you forever. His actions seem unfavorable and unloving because nothing is happening. God isn't fulfilling His promises. From all appearances, He is withholding His grace and compassion from you (Ps. 77:7-10).

How can you experience the power and intimacy of God in your life so He doesn't feel distant?

Consider these actions to help you grow close in your relationship with God:
1. Remember God's wondrous deeds and works
2. Consider God's holiness and greatness
3. Meditate on God's power in delivering you from sin (Ps. 77:11-15)
4. Observe God's power and handiwork in creation through thunderstorms and lightning  (Ps. 77:16-18)

Because of God's works, character, deliverance and creation, you can trust Him completely to lead your life. It could be a "Red Sea" or "wilderness" experience with enemies chasing you or time of uncertainty wondering if He will protect and provide for you (Ps. 77:19-20).

Are you going through a "Red Sea" or "wilderness" experience? Consider these questions:
1. How have you seen God work in the past?
2. Meditate on God's holiness and greatness
3. How has God delivered you from sin?
4. Observe God's handiwork in creation.
How have your answers given you greater hope in this "hopeless" circumstance?
