How to Possess and Regain Territory Lost to Evil One (Insight in Prophets)

Cindy Jacobs in her book, "Possessing the Gates of the Enemy," quoted Ed Silvoso's definition of a stronghold: "a mindset impregnated with hopelessness that causes the believer to accept as unchangeable something that he/she knows is contrary to the will of God."

Rights we have to give up in order to tear down strongholds:
  • The right to be offended.
  • The right to our time.
  • The right to do what we want with our possessions.
  • The right to self-pity.
  • The right to self-justification.
  • The right to be understood.
  • The right to criticize.

Isaiah 10-12 explains how to possess and regain territory lost to the evil one. We judge idolatry, injustice, pride, self-confidence and independent spirit. We return to God and rely on the Mighty One to remove burdens. We receive godly wisdom to decide correctly about the poor. We raise the Lord’s banner and fight spiritually to fill the earth with His knowledge to transform and possess every cultural sphere for His glory. We praise and trust God for salvation to share His deeds with the world.

Judge Idolatry and Injustice
Woe to those who make unjust laws and decisions to deprive the poor of their rights and rob the oppressed of justice. At judgment day, your riches are worthless and God's anger remains. God sent and commissioned Assyria to trample a godless nation like mud in the streets and destroy many nations whose idols and graven images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria. God judged both Jerusalem and Samaria (Is. 10:1-11). God judges idolatry and injustice against the poor.

Judge Pride, Self-Confidence and Independent Spirit
When God finished His work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, He punished the king of Assyria for the willful pride of his heart and haughty look in his eyes. Assyria trusted his strength, wisdom and understanding to defeat nations and gather their riches. A tool cannot exalt itself over the one who wields it. Therefore the Lord Almighty sent a wasting disease upon their sturdy warriors. The Holy One burned thorns in a single day and destroyed soul and body like a sick man wasting away (Is. 10:12-19). God judges pride, self-confidence and an independent spirit destroying a person's soul.

Return to God and Rely on Mighty One to Remove Burdens
The remnant of Israel would rely on the Holy One instead of Assyria. They returned to the Mighty God but He planned complete destruction according to righteousness for others. Do not fear the Assyrians since God would eventually destroy them like Egypt at the Red Sea. He would remove your burden and break their yoke (Is. 10:20-34). People return to God and rely on the Mighty One to have their burdens removed.

Receive Godly Wisdom to Decide Correctly About the Poor
A shoot will bear fruit from the stem of Jesse with the Spirit of the Lord resting on Him consisting of wisdom, understanding, counsel, power, knowledge and the fear of the Lord. He will delight in the fear of the Lord and not judge by what His eyes see nor make a decision by what His ears hear but judge and give decisions for the poor according to righteousness and justice. He will slay the wicked with the breadth of His lips. Righteousness will be the belt around his loins and faithfulness the belt around His waist (Is. 11:1-5). The Holy Spirit provides godly wisdom, understanding, counsel, power, knowledge and the fear of the Lord to make righteous and just decisions concerning the poor.

Raise Lord’s Banner to Fill Earth with His Knowledge in Transforming Every Sphere
The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down  with the kid and the calf and lion will be together with a little boy leading them. The cow will feed with the bear and their young will lie down together. The lion will eat straw like the ox. The infant will play near the hole of the cobra without being hurt. For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. In that day, the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will rally to Him and His place of rest will be glorious (Is. 11:6-10). God's people raise the Lord's banner to fill the earth with His knowledge in transforming every cultural sphere.

Fight Spiritually for His People to Possess Land in God’s Glory and Peace
In that day, the Lord will reach out His hand a second time to reclaim the remnant from various nations. He will raise a banner for the nations, gather the exiles of Israel and assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth. Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah nor Judah hostile toward Ephraim. Judah's enemies would be cut off and they will possess Edom and Moab with Ammon subject to them. The Lord will dry up the gulf of the Egyptian sea and break up the Euphrates River so men could cross over it with sandals. A highway for the remnant will be left from Assyria like Israel when they came up from Egypt (Is. 11:11-16). God fights for His people so they can possess the land for His glory resulting in true peace.

Praise and Trust Lord for Salvation to Share His Deeds with the World
On that day you will praise the Lord for His comfort and salvation. You will trust and not be afraid since the Lord is your strength and song. He has become your salvation to joyously draw water from the springs of salvation. You will thank the Lord, call on His name and make known His deeds among the peoples so they can remember His name is exalted. Praise the Lord in song for He has done excellent things. Let it be known to all the world. God's people shout for joy because the Holy One of Israel is great among you (Is. 12:1-6). God's people praise and trust the Lord for salvation in order to share His deeds with the world.

Sylvia Gunter in "Prayer Portions" says the first step in victory is to recognize the war that we are fighting. The next step is to know how to fight the enemy. Finally, the last step is to actually take a firm stand and intentionally go after the enemy. Lift High the Lord Your Banner helps aggressively fight the enemy and push him out of our territory. We stand on higher ground and have an advantage over him.

Choose a few of the enemy banners that you see in your life today. Use one of God's names to wage war against the enemy. Pray the prayer using the format below:

Lord, I renounce_____________________

You, Lord, are greater. I praise you that you are_________________

For example:
Lord, I renounce my bitterness, keeping accounts, hard-feelings, and ill will towards others.

You, Lord, are greater. I praise you that you are God of all grace (1 Pet. 5:10), Jehovah-Rapha (Healer) Exo 15:26 and Father of Mercies (2 Cor. 1:3-4). In Jesus' name. Amen!

Dealing with Compromise, Independence and Stress (Insights in Prophets)

Compromise, independence and stress are modern-day issues that David also faced while being chased by Saul. What can we do to overcome these beasts that produce lies, attacks, chaos and  lack of peace? We see the importance of relationships combin addition to obeying God's word as  solutions. Study 1 Sam. 21-22 to learn how obedience, prayer and confession of sin combined with community, friends and hospitality relieve stress, overcome independence and defeat compromise.

Compromise
David deceived Ahimelech, the priest, by saying the king commissioned him about an important matter requiring secrecy. When David asked for bread, his young men received consecrated bread (1 Sam. 21:1-6). Fear causes lies, deception and compromises your faith.

Independence
Doeg the Edomite, chief of Saul’s shepherds, was detained before the Lord. David asked Abimelech for a spear or sword since he brought neither. The priest offered Goliath’s sword, which David took (1 Sam. 21:7-9). Independence in not using God’s armor through prayer and His word allows the evil one to attack you and others.

Stress
David fled from Saul and went to Aschish king of Gath. When his servants said, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?”, David took these words to heart and greatly feared Achish. He disguised his sanity and acted insanely in their hands (1 Sam. 21:10-15). Stress produces chaos, lack of peace and non-transparency.

Obedience and Community Relieve Stress

David escaped to the cave of Adullam and his family went down to him. Everyone in distress, debt and discontented gathered to David and he became captain over 400 men. David asked the king of Moab if his family could stay with him until he knew what God would do for him.  The prophet of Gad said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold; depart, and go into land of Judah.” David departed and went into the forest of Hereth (1 Sam. 22:1-5). Obedience to God's direction and community relieve stress.

Prayer and Friends Overcome Independence
After David was discovered, Saul said to servants, “Hear now, O Benjamites. Will David give to all of you fields and vineyards? Will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds? Saul had self-pity that no one disclosed Jonathan’s plans in befriending David. Saul said everyone conspired against him by not disclosing to him that his son, Jonathan, had made a covenant with David so he could ambush Saul. Doeg said he saw David with Ahimelech who inquired of the Lord for him, gave him provisions and Goliath's
sword (1 Sam. 22:6-10). Friends protect you spiritually and physically with prayer and provisions to overcome independence.

Confession and Hospitality Defeat Compromise
Saul accused Ahimelech and David of conspiring together when he gave bread, a sword and inquired of God for him. When Saul’s guards didn’t kill Ahimelech and his father’s household, then Doeg the Edomite killed the priests, men, women, children, infants and animals. Abiathar, son of Ahimelech, told David that Saul killed the priests of the Lord. David confessed that he was responsible for these deaths and promised safety for Abiathar if he stayed with him
(1 Sam. 22:11-23). Confession of sin, hospitality as a demonstration of love and community defeat compromise.

Which of compromise, independence and stress cause you the most problems? Study the solution in the above paragraphs and ask God for the victory.

Danger of "Feel-Good" Religion (Insights in Prophets)

12/11/2010

People develop a “feel-good” religion when they do what is right in their own eyes without Biblical standards. In a 2009 year-end report, George Barna writes, "Bible reading has become the religious equivalent of sound-bite journalism. When people read from the Bible they typically open it, read a brief passage without much regard for the context, and consider the primary thought or feeling that the passage provided. If they are comfortable with it, they accept it; otherwise, they deem it interesting but irrelevant to their life, and move on. There is shockingly little growth evident in people's understanding of the fundamental themes of the scriptures and amazingly little interest in deepening their knowledge and application of biblical principles.

You see similar dynamics occurring the time of the Judges. Danites were seeking land as an inheritance. While five men spied out the land, they recognized Micah's priest and asked him to inquire of God to determine if their way would be prosperous. The priest said, “Go in peace; your way in which you are going has the Lord’s approval” (Judges 18:3-6). Common sense, expediency and pleasing men trumps hearing from God through His word and the Holy Spirit.

Five men came to Laish and saw people living in security and quiet. No ruler humiliated them and they were isolated from everyone. They reported back to their brothers that they should go up against this people with spacious land since "God has given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything on earth" (Judges 18:7-10). Success, prosperity and being the best you can be becomes the goal of "feel-good" religion.

From family of Danites, 600 men armed with weapons of war set out. The five men and 600 warriors took the graven image and household idols from Micah's house. The priest asked what they were doing. He gladly became a priest to 600 men instead of one man and took the ephod, household idols and graven image and went among the people (Judges 18:11-20). Ministry will idolize numbers and impact when Biblical standards aren't followed.

People around Micah’s house assembled and cried to sons of Dan. Micah said, “You have taken my gods which I made, priest and what do I have besides? How can you say, ‘What is the matter with you?’” When Micah saw they were too strong for him, he went back to his house (Judges 18:21-26).

"Feel-good" religions fails and won't deliver in times of trial.

After they took his idols and priest, he was angry. And there was no one to deliver Laish, a quiet living in security. The Danites struck them with the sword and burned their city with fire. There was no one to deliver them because it was far from Sidon and they had no dealings with anyone (Judges 18:27-29). Doing ministry independently from others feels good and is much easier, but without unity and teamwork in the body of Christ. defeat becomes inevitable.

Sons of Dan set up graven image and Manasseh and Gershom were priests to Danites until captivity. They set up Micah’s graven image he had made, all the time that the house of God was at Shiloh (Judges 18:30-31).  Without guidance from God's word, you degenerate into "self-styled" and "feel-good" religion.

Barna wrote that "by the time most Americans reach the age of 13 or 14, they think they pretty much know everything of value the Bible has to teach and they are no longer interested in learning more scriptural content. It requires increasingly concise, creative, reinforced, and personally relevant efforts to penetrate people's minds with new or more accurate insights into genuinely biblical principles."

Consider these Scriptures from Ps. 119 to learn how beneficial and practical God's word is to your daily life:
Ps.119:14,18,22,24,28,37,45,61,66,69,92,98,99,
105,111,117,127,130,133,143,157,161,165
