I led a Bible study during the lunch hour with office and blue-collar workers at a manufacturing firm. We studied Old Testament covenants and how Christ fulfilled them in Matthew.  Management decided the office staff and production workers should have separate lunch breaks at different times.

I asked Joe, a friend from church, “How would you like to lead a Bible study for other welders and assembly workers on the production floor?”

“I’ve never done anything like that, Mark” Joe said.

“I would be glad to train you. You might be amazed how God could use you,” Mark said.

“Ok, let me give it a try!” Joe said.

God’s kingdom came to this company as production workers trusted Christ. During their 15-minute morning and afternoon breaks, God’s word was discussed. In the evenings, Joe repaired many workers’ motorcycles at his home. He shared the gospel with many coming to faith in Christ.

Christ compared the kingdom of God to a mustard seed (smallest of all seeds) and leaven (obscure material) that grows like a tree, and expands bread from the inside out, respectively.

1. Acknowledge God’s design
Neither the Galileans’ blood Pilate inter-mingled with the Roman sacrifices nor the 18 killed when the Siloam tower collapsed were greater sinners than those still alive. Unless you repent, you will also perish. For three years, a fig tree didn’t produce fruit. If a tree didn’t bear fruit in four years with fertilizer around it, he cut it down (Luke 13:1-9). Acknowledge God’s design of circumstances so people repent of sin and bear fruit.

2. Help others experience freedom in Christ
A woman bent double for 18 years with sickness stood erect when Jesus laid hands on her. A Sabbath healing upset a synagogue official. Jesus said he was hypocritical. Shouldn't a daughter of Abraham be released from Satan's bonds? All His opponents were humiliated and a multitude rejoiced over the glorious things done by Jesus (Luke 13:10-17). Help others experience freedom in Jesus by releasing people from Satan's bonds.

3. Facilitate the spread of God’s kingdom
Jesus compared the kingdom of God to a mustard seed that grew and became a tree. The kingdom of God is also like leaven that a woman hid in meal until it was leavened (Luke 13:18-21). Facilitate the spread of God’s kingdom from small beginnings to impact a person from the inside out.

4. Experience God’s kingdom
When someone asked if just a few are saved, Jesus said to enter by the narrow door since many seek to enter without success.  Those who know God's will eat and drink with Christ. Those left out will experience weeping and gnashing of teeth (Luke 13:22-30). Experience God's kingdom by trusting Christ and doing God’s will.

5. Patiently await Christ’s return
The Pharisees told Christ to leave since Herod wanted to kill Him. Jesus said His goal was to cast out demons and perform cures until His death and resurrection. Christ expressed sorrow over people rejecting and not seeing Him until His Second Coming (Luke 13:31-35). Patiently await Christ’s return when He sets up His kingdom.

The following principles show how God's kingdom grows:
1. Repent of your sin and personally receive His death and resurrection.
2. Bear fruit by accepting God’s rule in your life.
3. Be God’s agent releasing people from bondage to Satan so they experience freedom from the inside out.
4. Begin small with simple gospel conversations and see God's kingdom spread in your sphere of influence.

Biblical Convictions Derived from Discipleship

“I want freedom to do what I want! No one is going to tell me what to do,” Kerry said.

“What will your life be like if you follow that philosophy, Kerry?” Samuel said.

“If I make lots of money,” Kerry said, “I can help more people and not be under stress trying to make ends meet.”

“It makes sense for this life, but what about for eternity?” Samuel said, “Have you considered the eternal consequences of not centering your life around Christ?”

Most Christians live for this world, not for Christ. Because their lives aren't distinct from others, people avoid the church and Christianity. Luke 12 explains the Biblical convictions derived from discipleship.

1. Be authentic and transparent
Beware of hypocrisy because every secret will be revealed. Don't fear people, but fear the One with authority to cast you into hell. Because God loves you, confess Him before men so He can confess you before angels. Rejecting the Holy Spirit has an eternal impact determining heaven or hell. God will teach you what to say when sharing the gospel (Luke 12:1-12). Be authentic and transparent in leading people to Christ.

2. Lay up treasure in heaven
Be on guard against every form of greed because life doesn’t consist of possessions. Laying up goods on earth for comfort and pleasure is short-sighted because everyone gives an account to God. It's foolish to lay up treasure for yourself and not be rich toward God. (Luke 12:13-21). Lay up treasure in heaven by refusing materialism and greed.

3. Seek God’s kingdom first
Don't be anxious as God provides for birds who neither sow nor reap. Have faith in God and don't worry about food, clothing, and shelter because He knows you need these things. Seek first His kingdom and these things will be provided.  Don't be afraid because your Father has gladly given you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to those with real needs so you lay up treasure in heaven (Luke 12:22-34). Seek God's kingdom first by being generous and trusting Him to provide.

4. Live for Christ’s Second Coming
Be ready and alert for Christ's second coming to welcome Him with open arms. The head of the house will prepare and protect himself from thieves breaking into his house. The Son of Man is coming at an hour you don't expect (Luke 12:35-40). Live for Christ’s Second Coming by spiritual preparation.

5. Become a faithful steward
The faithful steward in charge of God's possessions won’t beat his slaves because of his master's delay. The unfaithful steward beats his slaves and the master assigns him a place with unbelievers. A slave who knew the master's will but disobeyed will receive many lashes. The one who didn’t know but committed deeds worthy of flogging will receive few lashes (Luke 12:41-48). Become a faithful steward of time, talent and treasure obeying Christ.

 6. Suffer persecution
Christ was distressed until His baptism since He brought division, not peace, to families. Three members will be against two, two against three, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, etc. (Luke 12:49-53). Suffer persecution in your family by identifying with Christ.

7. Consider eternal consequences
Hypocrites analyze the weather but not this present time. They don't judge what’s right. If you have a dispute, it's better to settle than risk having the authorities throw you into prison until the penalty is paid in full (Luke 12:54-59). Consider eternal consequences of your actions with proper judgment.

Action Steps: Ask God to develop the following four Biblical convictions derived from discipleship:
1. Consider the eternal consequences of heaven and hell. Does that motivate you share Christ?
2. Be spiritually prepared for Christ's Second Coming.
3. Maximize your time, talent and treasure for God's purposes.
4. Suffer persecution within your family by identifying with Christ.

Disclose Sins and Struggles

“Christians think they are so holy. I can’t live up to their expectations,” Larry said.

“Tell me more,” Sam said.

“The few times I went to church, they asked me if I was a Christian.” Larry said. “Their tone of voice made me feel judged! I haven’t been to church for years.”

“You know, Larry,” Sam said, “I often get angry with my wife. She might not talk to me the rest of the day!”

“How do you handle it?” Larry said.

“Jesus makes a huge difference!” Sam said, “I confess my sin and pray for God’s power to respond with a kind word. Sometimes I let my emotions get the best of me. I’m not perfect. I struggle with sin every day.”

Gary Comer lists the Disclosure window as one of the 10 key mission skills in his book, Remission. A Christian shares present personal sins or struggles to convey grace and Christ’s power, which opens up the dialogue with a non-believer. Luke 11 shows how to resolve our sins and struggles so we can disclose them to others.

1. Pray for God’s kingdom
Jesus' disciples asked for instruction on prayer. Jesus answered (my paraphrase): Father, your name enables me to develop a relationship with you so I can ask that you reign on earth like in heaven, meet my daily needs, be an ambassador to help others experience release from the guilt and power of sin and prevent being led into temptation" (Luke 11:1-4).  Pray for God’s kingdom to come down on earth.

2. Pray persistently for Holy Spirit
Jesus told a parable about someone wanting to provide bread to feed an unexpected guest. When his friend refused an initial request at midnight, his persistence was rewarded. He who asks receives, he who seeks finds, and he who knocks on a door, opens it. If unrighteous fathers give to their children, imagine a heavenly father giving the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:5-13). Pray persistently for needs and the Holy Spirit.

3. Defeat strongholds
Some accused Christ of using Satan's power to cast out demons. Christ said a kingdom or house divided against itself falls. Christ said it's impossible to cast out demons if He's divided against Himself. However, if He casts out demons by God's power, then God’s kingdom came upon them. "He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me, scatters." (Luke 11:14-26). Defeat strongholds and idolatry by God's power.

4. Repent of sin
Jesus said those who observe God’s word are blessed. Christ said this generation didn’t repent of their sin like Nineveh after Jonah preached to them. The Queen of the South will also condemn this generation because she heard Solomon’s wisdom. Someone greater than Jonah and Solomon were in this generation's midst (Luke 11:27-32). Repent of sin and ask for wisdom to do God’s word.

5. Cleanse your heart
No one lights a lamp to put it under a bushel, but on a lampstand so people see the light. Your eye is lamp of your body. A healthy eye enables the body to be full of light instead of darkness. The Lord accused the Pharisees of cleaning the outside, but leaving their hearts full of robbery and wickedness (Luke 11:33-41). Cleanse your heart so others see Christlike purity, mercy and compassion.

6. Model authenticity
The Pharisees neglected justice and God’s love. They sought honor from men being unaware of their dead hearts instead of helping the weak experience justice and God's love.  They were accountable for killing and persecuting prophets and apostles since the beginning of time. When Christ left, the scribes and Pharisees plotted against Him. They questioned Him closely on many subjects to catch Him in something He might say (Luke 11:42-54).  Model authenticity by sharing Christ’s justice and love in your sins and struggles.

Action Step: Pray for Holy Spirit power to defeat strongholds, repent of sin, and cleanse your heart so you model authenticity by disclosing your sins and struggles with a non-believer.

Ingredients for An Effective Evangelism and Discipleship Team (Insights in NT)

Working in the church used to mean performing one's gift in the world whether it was at home, at work or in the mission field. Now it means a religious act performed within a building called the church. In the book of Acts, everyone was a missionary involved in the work of the church. Today, we have delegated this job to full-time vocation workers called clergy. Eph. 4:11-13 says certain gifts like pastor-teacher equip people to be involved in the ministry. All of us need to be involved. Paul is a case example of someone who mobilized and equipped workers for the harvest field. Acts 19-20 explains the ingredients for an effective evangelism and discipleship team.

Paul learned that the disciples in Ephesus had been baptized into John's baptism of repentance before believing in Christ. When they heard about the Holy Spirit, they were baptized in the name of Jesus. About 12 men began speaking in tongues and prophesying after the Holy Spirit came upon them (Acts 19:1-7). Supply the missing pieces in peoples' understanding and application of God's word.

For three months in the synagogues, Paul reasoned and persuaded people boldly about the kingdom of God. When some spoke evil of the Way, he took the disciples to the school of Tyrannus and reasoned daily with them. For two years, all the Jews and Greeks who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord. God performed miracles through Paul with diseases and evil spirits leaving. Some Jewish exorcists tried to mimic Paul, but evil spirits overpowered them so they left naked and wounded. Many believed, confessed and disclosed their practices and burned their magic books in the sight of all. The word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed (Acts 19:8-20). Teach and show evidence of the kingdom of God so His word grows and prevails.

Paul passed through Macedonia and Achaia, purposed to go to Jerusalem and later saw Rome. Timothy and Erastus who ministered to him were sent into Macedonia while Paul stayed in Asia for a while (Acts 19:21-22). Follow God's leadership with your team ministering to one another.

Demetrius brought much business to the craftsmen who made the silver shrines of Artemis. He saw Paul as a threat to their prosperity because people were coming to Christ in Ephesus and Asia causing the temple of Artemis to be regarded as worthless. The town clerk cooled the riot after Paul's traveling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus, were dragged and a crowd shorted for two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" (Acts 19:23-41). Realize that society views the gospel as a threat when people apply God's word.

After the uproar, Paul exhorted the disciples in Ephesus and Macedonia before coming to Greece. When a plot was formed against him by the Jews, he determined to return through Macedonia with Sopater of Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, Gaius of Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. They had gone ahead and waited for Paul's team at Troas (Acts 20:1-6). Train a working team of ambassadors from various cities who can teach and spread God's word together.

On the first day of the week when they gathered together to break bread, he extended his message until midnight. A boy fell to his death after sleeping, but Paul raised him to life through God's power. He talked with them until daybreak. Paul decided to sail past Ephesus so he could be in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost (Acts 20:7-16). Maximize  your time to teach and disciple others.

From Miletus, Paul told the Ephesian elders that he served the Lord with humility, tears and trials through the plots of the Jews. He always declared what was was profitable, taught publicly and from house to house repentance toward God and faith in Christ. Paul sacrificed his life to finish his course and the ministry he received from Christ of testifying of God's grace, preaching the kingdom and not hesitating to  declare the whole will of God. He told the elders to be on guard for themselves and the flock since the Holy Spirit made them overseers to shepherd the church of God bought with His own blood. Because savage wolves from among them would distort the truth drawing disciples after them, be on guard like Paul who never stopped warning them night and day for three years. He committed them to God and the word of His grace to build and give them an inheritance among all who were sanctified. He coveted no one's money, worked hard to fund himself and his team and helped the weak as it's more blessed to give than receive. He prayed and they wept together grieving they would not see Paul again (Acts 20:17-38). Teach from the whole Bible to prevent distortion of truth and deception from false teachers.

Consider if your church or ministry teams are aligned with the following ingredients for effective evangelism and discipleship:
1. Our team supplies the missing pieces in peoples' understanding and application of God's word

2. Our team teaches and shows evidence of the kingdom of God so His word grows and prevails
3. Our team follows God's leadership with each member  ministering to one another
4. Our team realizes that society views the gospel as a threat when people apply God's word
5. Our team trains a working team of ambassadors from various cities who can teach and spread God's word together
6. Our team maximizes their time to teach and disciple others
7. Our team teaches from the whole Bible to prevent distortion of truth and deception from false teachers

Operating Out of a Kingdom Agenda (Insights in NT)

9/24/2011

Picture
It's much easier and seemingly more effective to adopt the world's way instead of the unpredictable and messy ways of the Spirit. Child raising becomes simplier and straight forward if we get our children to conform instead of the uncertain outcomes in relating to their spirits and uniqueness. Marking things off our to-do list takes less thought than asking God what He wants me to do first. When we operate out of habit and default mode, we seek our own own agenda rather than letting the Spirit of God increase so His agenda predominates.  Christ challenged a  religious ruler and His disciples to operate out of a kingdom agenda.

Understanding

A Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, came by night and said he knew Jesus (teacher) couldn't do these signs unless God was with him. Jesus replied that unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saw only physical birth. Jesus answered that one must be born of both water and the Spirit to enter into the kingdom of God since flesh produces flesh and Spirit produces spirit. The Spirit is unpredictable like the wind since you don't know its origin or direction. After asking Nicodemus as teacher of Israel why he didn't understand these things, Jesus gave the illustration of Moses lifting the serpent in the wilderness. Israel looked at it for healing like believing in the lifted up Son of Man for eternal life (John 3:1-15). Those who believe in the resurrected Son of Man understand that outcomes are unpredictable in the kingdom of God.

Desire
God loved the world by sending His Son. Whoever believes and is saved through Him has eternal life, not judgment. Men hated Christ and avoided having their evil deeds exposed to the light. Those who practice the truth come to Christ so their deeds are seen as birthed from God (John 3:16-21). Those who believe in the resurrected Son of Man desire that their works and words originate from God.

Attitude
Jesus spent time with His disciples and they told John that all were coming to Him for baptizing. John answered that he was sent as a forerunner as the friend of the bridegroom. Because his joy was made full because of the bridegroom's (Christ) voice, he must decrease so He could increase (John 3:22-30). Those who believe in the resurrected Son of Man allow His voice and will increase in them as their will and agenda decrease.

Actions
Earthly people speak earthly words and heavenly people true words that bear witness of Christ since He gives the Spirit without measure. God sent His beloved Son of Man to speak His words since He gave all things into His hand. He who believes in the Son has eternal life but he who does not obey the Son does not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him (John 3:31-36). Those who believe in the resurrected Son of Man speak and do God's will as prompted by the Holy Spirit.

Affirm the truth of the following statements:
1. Those who believe in the resurrected Son of Man understand that outcomes are unpredictable in the kingdom of God. (understanding)
2. Those who believe in the resurrected Son of Man desire that their works and word originate from God. (desire)
3. Those who believe in the resurrected Son of Man allow  His voice and will increase in them as their will and agenda decrease. (attitude)
4. Those who believe in the resurrected Son of Man speak and do God's will as prompted by the Holy Spirit? (actions)

Tipping Point of Kingdom Growth (Insights in NT)

6/14/2011

Picture
A tipping point is a culmination of a build-up of small changes that effects a big change. Malcolm Gladwell popularized the concept in his book, "The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference," showing examples of technologies, procedures, services or philosophies reaching critical mass and becoming mainstream. In New York City, for example, subways were cleaned of graffiti, which led to a sharp decrease in the crime rate after 1990. The kingdom of God has its own tipping point when Christ compared it to a mustard seed (smallest of all seeds) and leaven (obscure material) that grows like a tree, and leavens bread, respectively.

Neither the Galileans whose blood Pilate mingled with the Roman sacrifices nor the 18 killed when the Siloam tower collapsed on them were greater sinners than those still alive. Unless you repent, you will also perish. For three years, a fig tree did not produce fruit. If the tree did not bear fruit the fourth year after putting fertilizer around it, he would cut it down (Lk. 13:1-9). God designs circumstances so people repent of sin and bear fruit.

A woman stood erect after being bent double for 18 years with a sickness caused by a spirit when Jesus laid His hands on her. The Sabbath healing upset a synagogue official. Jesus said they were hypocritical because they untied their ox and watered them on the Sabbath. Shouldn't a daughter of Abraham be released from Satan's bonds? All His opponents were humiliated and the entire multitude rejoiced over the glorious things done by Him (Lk. 13:10-17). Jesus wants to release people from Satan's bonds so they can experience freedom.

Jesus compared the kingdom of God to a mustard seed that grew and became a tree. The kingdom of God is also like leaven that a woman hid in meal until it was leavened (Lk. 13:18-21). God's kingdom spreads throughout the world from small beginnings to impact a person from the inside out.

When someone asked if just a few are saved, Jesus said to enter by the narrow door since many seek to enter without success.  Those who know God's will, will eat and drink with Christ and those left out will experience weeping and gnashing of teeth (Lk. 13:22-30). God's kingdom is revealed to those who do God’s will.

The Pharisees told Christ to leave since Herod wanted to kill Him. He told them of His goal to cast out demons and perform cures until His death and resurrection. Christ expressed His sorrow over His people rejecting and not seeing Him again until His Second Coming (Lk. 13:31-35).Christ calls on everyone to receive His death and resurrection.

To show how God's kingdom grows corporately, use a chiastic structure beginning with the first paragraph: A, B, C, D, C', B' A'. We group together the content in A & A', B & B', etc.:

1. God desires people to repent of their sin and personally receive His death and resurrection
2. God desires people to bear fruit in their lives by accepting His rule
3. God works from the inside out by releasing people from bondage to Satan so they experience freedom.
4. God's kingdom spreads throughout the world from small beginnings.

Description of Kingdom of God Ministry (Insights in NT)

5/5/2011

Picture
God's way of ministry is completely opposed to the world's. The world says to trust your strategic plan. God says to listen and obey Him. The world says to have all your resources, including finances in place, before proceeding with ministry. God says to trust Him and move forward even when it's not all figured out or been provided.  The world says you need education and credentials. God says He will provide power and authority to proclaim and heal in the kingdom of God. The world says that my church can do ministry without assistance from other congregations or community leaders.  God says to collaborate with other members of the body of Christ and city leaders to get the job done. The world says to serve those with resources who can financially support your ministry. God says to give first priority to the least of these who can never pay you back. Of course, education, research, strategic plans, resources, etc., are tools that God can use, but never allow any of them to take priority over Him. Listen to Jesus describe kingdom of God ministry in Luke 9.

Jesus gave the twelve power and authority over demons and healing diseases. He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing. Take nothing on your journey, get available housing and leave if not received as a testimony against them. Jesus went among the villages preaching the gospel and healing everywhere (Lk. 9:1-6). Trust God to provide as you proclaim kingdom of God and perform healing.

Herod was perplexed about John possibly rising from the dead and Elijah appearing. Herod kept trying to see Jesus (Lk. 9:7-9). Worldly authorities are perplexed and curious about Jesus' mission of proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom.

The apostles talked about their activities with Jesus. He spoke to them about the kingdom of God and curing those in need of healing with the multitude present. Jesus told the twelve to feed the multitude with five loaves and two fish for 5,000 men. Jesus instructed them to recline in groups of 50 each. He blessed, broke and gave the disciples bread to set before the multitude. They had 12 baskets left over (Lk. 9:10-17). Be available, organize, give what you have and trust Jesus to provide additional resources.

While praying alone, Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do the multitudes say that I am?" After mentioning John the Baptist and others, He said, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said, "The Christ of God." He warned them to keep quiet since the Son of Man must suffer many things, be rejected by religious authorities, killed and raised up on the third day. Jesus said to deny yourself, take up your cross daily and follow Him if you wish to come after Him. He who saves his life loses it, but whoever loses his life for Christ will save it. It is of no profit if you gain the world and lose your soul. If we are ashamed of Christ and His words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of us when He comes again (Lk. 9:18-27). Commit yourself completely to following Christ and His will for your life.

He took Peter, John and James to pray with Him on the mountain. The three saw His glory with Moses and Elijah standing with Him. A voice said, "This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!" (Lk. 9:28-36). Listening to God is your most important priority.

A great multitude met Jesus and a man begged Him to look at his son whose spirit  had been seized by a demon and asked His disciples to cast it out, but they couldn't. Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy and they were amazed at the greatness of God. Jesus said the Son of Man would be betrayed into the hands of men (Lk. 9:37-45). Trust the greatness of God, even when you are betrayed by men.

After the disciples argued who would be the greatest among them, Jesus said they must receive Him like a child since the least among you is the greatest (Lk. 9:46-48). Give priority to serving the least and disenfranchised among you.

Don't hinder anyone casting out demons in Christ's name since he who is not against you is for you (Lk. 9:49-50). Collaborate with other members in the body of Christ since you serve on the same team.

When the Samaritans did not receive Him, Christ said that the "Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them" (Lk. 9:51-56). Your goal is to improve peoples' lives in all respects.

He told His followers that the Son of Man had nowhere to lay His head. Let the dead bury their own dead, even if it is your father, but go and proclaim fully and everywhere the kingdom of God. If you say good-bye to those at home and don't put your hand to the plow, then you aren't fit for the kingdom of God (Lk. 9:57-62). Separate from anything that hinders you from following God's will completely.

The following is a description of kingdom of God ministry. Use a chiastic structure beginning with the first paragraph: A, B, C, D, E, E', D', C', B' A'. We group together the content in A & A', B & B', etc.
1. Separate from anything that hinders you from proclaiming the kingdom of God and performing healing.
2. Work with city leaders in improving peoples' lives in all respects.
3. Collaborate with all members of the body of Christ to provide necessary resources in proclaiming and demonstrating the kingdom of God.
4. Your ministry priority is serving the least of these.
5. Your personal priority is listening to God and obeying Him even when it costs you.

Let God Grow His People and His Ministry (Insights in NT)

12/2/2010

Picture
I often think that God wants me to move quickly or make a big splash when it comes to ministry. It's just the opposite. In the kingdom of God, He is looking for receptive people who trust God to grow the ministry from small beginnings. Human strategies often get in the way of God working out His plan in His way and in His time. Mark 4 illustrates the various levels of receptivity to God's word and describes kingdom principles directly affecting God's reputation introduced in the prior chapter.

Description of Individuals in Kingdom
1. Blank Mind: Ignored Word
The seed of God's word falling beside the road has no traction because people ignore or don't pay attention because Satan takes it away  (Mark 4:4,15).

2. Unchanged Mind: Powerless Word
Seed falling on rocky ground has superficial connection since affliction, peer pressure or persecution render it powerless (Mark 4:5-6,16-17).

3. Double Mind: Choked Word
Seed falling among thorns represents the worries of the  world, deceitfulness of riches and desires for other things, which choke the word from bearing fruit (Mark 4:7,18-19).

4. Receptive Mind: Fruitful Word
Seed falling on good soil yields 30, 60 and 100-fold fruit (Mark 4:8,20). The blank mind, unchanged mind and double mind hide the light, but the receptive mind shines the light of Christ like a lampstand. Your level of receptivity to God's word is directly proportional to the amount of truth and responsibility He will reveal and entrust to you in the kingdom of God (Mark 4:8,20-25).

Description of Kingdom Principles
1. Organic Growth
Kingdom is like man who casts seed upon the soil, which grows in quantity and quality (maturity) while he sleeps (Mark 4:26-29).

2. Start Small
A mustard seed is smaller than all seeds but grows up larger than all plants (Mark 4:30-34).

3. Bold Faith
Jesus showed faith by sleeping in midst of storm  and then He rebuked the wind so the sea became calm (Mark 4:35-41).

Will you have faith in God to grow you, other individuals or your ministry by starting small in word or deed? For example, mentor or disciple one person and watch what God will do.

Stop Taking Shortcuts in Making Disciples (Insights in NT)

11/8/2010

Picture
Since becoming a believer, I have observed the difficulty in maintaining a balance between building up believers and reaching those outside the faith. Embracing the two Great Commandments of loving God with all our heart, mind and soul & loving our neighbor as ourselves empowers us to make disciples (Matt. 22:34-40; 28:18-20). Churches often try short-cuts by designing programs to get believers together instead of doing life together or scheduling short-term outreaches into the community apart from the hard work of developing authentic relationships motivated by the Holy Spirit through the New Covenant.

Walk in Path of New Covenant Ministry
The events of Christ’s death and resurrection make walking in the New Covenant possible. You have the opportunity to share in His sufferings and death prior to walking in Christ's glory and resurrection (Matt. 27:28-51; 28:6-7).

Reading about the crucifixion and resurrection is both troubling and awe-inspiring. However, the key question is,  “How will you respond to these truths rooted in actual events that occurred 2,000 years ago?”

Those who have placed their trust in Christ’s death, burial and resurrection are privileged to walk in the footsteps of the original disciples in making new disciples (Matt. 28:18-20).

Process of Making Disciples
The process of making disciples begins with teaching, baptism and instruction. People need to hear the Gospel, be baptized and become  identified and incorporated into the life of the church community and learn everything that Jesus commanded leading to active participation in the Kingdom of God. Matthew illustrates equipping prospective disciples.

Discipleship Training in Context of Matthew:

1. The Sermon on the Mount: Matt. 5-7
Attitudes in responding to God's rule in the Kingdom of God

2.
Sending of the twelve apostles: Matt. 10
How to have maximum impact in the Kingdom of God through our service and outreach in the world

3. Parables of the Kingdom: Matt. 13
Individual spiritual growth and corporate expansion of the Kingdom in the world

4.  Discipline with church body: Matt. 18
Protecting the integrity of the kingdom from impurity

5.  Olivet Discourse: Matt. 24-25
Attitude and action required to maximize our stewardship of time, talent and treasure in ministering to the least of these in our midst

Study and meditate on the above passages. How will maintain the balance between edification of believers and reaching out to not-yet believers in building the kingdom of God? What next steps is God calling you to make as an individual and as a church?

What Is Key to Living a Kingdom Lifestyle? (insights in NT)

Just as there are three important factors in real estate (location, location, location), there are three important factors in living a Kingdom lifestyle. I often think it's about my efforts.  As a result, I don't take time to pray. If we want to model the life of Christ in living a Kingdom lifestyle, what are the three most important factors? Pray, pray, pray!

The amount of time we spend with Jesus is directly proportional to our effectiveness in living a Kingdom lifestyle.

We experience a taste of Kingdom goodness as we spend time with Jesus regularly (Matt. 17:1-2).

Listening to Jesus' voice and fixing our eyes on nothing but Him allows us to experience the Father's pleasure in Christ, which transforms our self-esteem (Matt. 17:5-8).

As God leads and we discern people are ready, share your personal experiences of Christ with others (Matt, 17:9-13).

Our power to influence events is directly proportional to the time we spend with Christ (Matt. 17:1-2, 14-16, 19-21).

Listen and hear, trust and obey. Experience Jesus creatively meeting daily needs (Matt. 17:24-27).

Notice the intensity of E.M. Bounds, in a quote from  his book, Necessity of Prayer. "Prayer ascends by fire. Flame gives prayer access as well as wings, acceptance as well as energy. There is no incense without fire; no prayer without flame."

Ask God to give you a heart to spend additional time with Him. When will you schedule this time?

My goal is to ignite the hearts of people by explaining God's word in the Law, Prophets, Psalms and New Testament consecutively, much like the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:32,44). I have been a missionary in Lincoln, NE, for 13 years with Christ For the City Int. and Sync with God.

Sync with God is a highly versatile web app that hosts on-demand, virtual small groups. Sync is designed to connect young seekers in the faith and scripturally-trained mentors, even globally. It offers a safe, engaging interface for Millennials/Gen. Z and is readily adaptable to technical advances well into the future.
