How to Overcome Satan's Lies (Insights in Prophets)

Charles Spurgeon wrote, “The precious blood of Jesus is not meant for us merely to admire and exhibit.  We must not be content to talk about it, and extol it, and do nothing with it; but we are to use it in the great crusade against unholiness and unrighteousness, till it is said of us, ‘They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb.’  This precious blood is to be used for overcoming, and consequently for holy warfare.  We dishonor it if we do not use it to that end . . . The dog of hell knows the dread name which makes him lie down: we must confront him with the authority, and specially with the atonement of the Lamb of God.” You will learn from the negative examples of Jeroboam and Rehoboam how to overcome Satan's lies.

A man of God warned Jeroboam that Josiah born to the house of David would sacrifice the priests of the high places with human bones being burned on him. The altar would be split apart and ashes poured out. When Jeroboam tried to  seize the man of God, he could not draw his hand back to himself. The king asked for prayer, which restored his hand. The man of God refused a reward because the word of the Lord commanded him to not eat bread nor drink water and to go back a different way from Bethel (1 Kings 13:1-10). Repent of sin if you want to prosper and live rightly.

An old prophet living in Bethel heard from his sons what the man of God spoke to the king. He found the man of God sitting under an oak and told him to come home and eat bread with him. The man of God said no. The old prophet said an angel spoke by the word of the Lord to bring him to his house so he could eat bread and drink water. But he lied to him and the man of God followed him to his house. The old prophet said to the man of God that his body would not come to the grave of his fathers because he disobeyed the Lord 's command by returning and eating bread and drinking water. A lion killed the man of God and his body was thrown on the road with the donkey and lion standing beside the body (1 Kings 13:11-25). Obey God's word and reject lies so you don't experience calamity.

When the old prophet learned that the man of God was killed by a lion, he buried the body in his own grave. He mourned over him saying, "Alas, my brother!" The old prophet told his sons that he wanted to be buried in the same grave as the man of God. He cried by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and all the houses of the high places in the cities of Samaria. Jeroboam did not return from his evil way, but ordained priests of the high places from all the people. This event became sin to the house of Jeroboam to destroy it from the face of the earth (1 Kings 13:26-34). Cry out God's word against evil so people will repent.

When Jeroboam's son became sick, he disguised his wife to ask Ahijah the prophet what would happen to their son. Ahijah said that God exalted Jeroboam to be leader over Israel, but his evil exceeded all before him when he made other gods and molten images instead of keeping His commandments like David.  Therefore, God brought calamity on the house of Jeroboam so dogs or birds would eat every male person. Their son would die, but only he would go to the grave and be mourned. The Lord would raise up for Himself a king over Israel to cut off the house of Jeroboam and scatter Israel beyond the Euphrates River because they made their Asherim, which  provoked the Lord to anger. He would give up Israel because Jeroboam made them sin (1 Kings 14:1-20). Trust God's judgment against sin that leaders provoke.

Judah did evil and provoked the Lord to jealousy more than all their fathers had done. They built for themselves high places, sacred pillars, Asherim on every high hill or luxuriant tree and male cult prostitutes in the land. They followed the abominations of the nations that the Lord dispossessed before the sons of Israel (1 Kings 14:21-24). Set yourself apart by not following the world system around you.

In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Egypt took all the treasures of the house of the Lord and the king's house, including the gold shields Solomon made. Rehoboam made bronze shields and committed them to the care of the commanders of the guard. Whenever he entered the house of the Lord, the guards carried them and brought them back into the guards' room. There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually (1 Kings 14:25-31). Put on the armor of God and shield of faith to fight Satan's lies.

How to overcome Satan's lies: repent of sin, obey and cry out God's word, trust His judgment, set yourself apart and put on the armor of God.

Create Proper Atmosphere for Spiritual Harvest (Insights in Psalms)

Churches long to see a spiritual harvest of souls. Christ commanded His disciples to pray to the Lord of the Harvest to send out laborers because the fields are white until harvest (Matt. 9:37-38; Jn. 4:35). After Christ led the woman at the well into a relationship with Himself, He told His disciples that "one sows, and another reaps. I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored" (Jn. 4:37-38). The Psalmist explained how to create proper atmosphere for  spiritual harvest.

Crying to the Lord

I cried to the Lord in my trouble and He answered me. Deliver my soul from lying lips and deceitful tongue that are like sharp arrows. I dwelt too long with those who hate peace. I am for peace and they are for war (Ps. 120:1-7). Crying out to the Lord delivers you from lies and deceit.

Looking to the Lord
Looking for help from the Lord who made heaven and earth prevents you from slipping. The Lord is keeper and shade on your right hand. He will protect you from all evil, keep your soul and guard your actions forever (Ps. 121:1-8). Looking to the Lord for help protects you from evil.

Praying With Unity
Let the tribes of Israel go to the house of the Lord in Jerusalem so they can give thanks. In this place are the thrones for judgment. Pray that peace, prosperity and good may reign, not only in your palaces, but within you (Ps. 122:1-9). United prayer creates peace and prosperity.

Waiting Upon Him
As a servant looks to his master or maid to her mistress, I look to the Lord in heaven until He shows grace. Because our soul is greatly filled with contempt from the proud and scoffing of those at ease, I need God's grace, mercy and favor (Ps. 123:1-4). Waiting upon God allows Him to show grace in midst of contempt and scoffing.

Being On God's Side
Men's anger would have swallowed us alive if the Lord had not been on our side to prevent raging waters from passing over our soul. Help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth to break the snare of the trapper so our soul could escape (Ps. 124:1-8). Being on God's side delivers you from those who rise up against you.

Trusting in God
Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion. He surrounds His people so wickedness would not rest upon the righteous to do wrong. Ask the Lord to do good to those with upright hearts. The Lord led those with crooked ways to join doers of iniquity (Ps. 125:1-5). Trusting in God protects His people from wickedness.

Sowing His Word with Tears
When the Lord brought back the captive ones of Zion, they dreamed, laughed and shouted with joy. They told the nations that the Lord has done great things for them. Those sowing in tears carrying his bag of seeds reap with joyful shouting bringing sheaves with him (Ps. 126:1-6). Sowing His word with tears reaps souls who know God.

Do the following to create a proper atmosphere for spiritual harvest:
1. Crying out to the Lord delivers you from lies and deceit
2. Looking to the Lord for help protects you from evil
3. United prayer creates peace and prosperity
4. Waiting upon God allows Him to show grace in midst of contempt and scoffing
5. Being on God's side delivers you from those who rise up against you
6. Trusting in God protects His people from wickedness
7. Sowing His word with tears reap souls who know God

Responding to Dangerous Offenses (Insights in Prophets)

Picture
Those who nurse an unforgiving spirit risk their credibility and integrity. David refused to forgive and even see his son, Absalom, after he killed his half-brother, Amnon. You will see a case example of an offended and disrespected Absalom lie, seek revenge and rebel against David's authority as king.  Those who don't forgive experience heartache like David and must respond boldly to overcome the consequences caused by offenses like with Absalom. Let's observe the consequences and dangers caused by offenses and how to respond in a God-honoring way.

Consequences
Absalom ruled positively on all judgments saying that David wasn't listening to David's subjects. Absalom said that someone should appoint him judge so he could bring justice. Absalom stole away the hearts of Israel (2 Sam. 15:1-6). The offended party seeks respect and position at the expense of the one who wouldn't forgive him or her.

He asked permission from David to pay a vow in Hebron. Instead, Absalom sent spies throughout Israel to proclaim him king in Hebron. The conspiracy became strong when he sent for Ahithophel, David's counselor, while many people followed Absalom (2 Sam. 15:7-12). The offended party uses lies, plots and conspiracy to overthrow the one who wouldn't forgive him or her.

Response
When a messenger informed David of the conspiracy, he left Jerusalem except for 10 concubines to keep house. All his servants passed on beside him, including 600 men from Gath (2 Sam. 15:13-18). Forceful action and support of faithful friends protect you from conspiracy.

Ittai the Gittite wanted to stay with David regardless of the consequences. Israel wept with loud voices as all the people passed over toward the wilderness (2 Sam. 15:19-23). Mourning and weeping provide emotional support during a conspiracy.

Zadok and the Levites carried the ark of the covenant of God. David told Zadok to return the ark to Jerusalem figuring that if he found the Lord's favor, he would be back, but could trust Him to do good. He told Zadok to return while David would wait by the wilderness for his word of guidance (2 Sam. 15:24-29). Listen to God's word for direction in the midst of a conspiracy.

David and all the people wept and covered their heads as they ascended the Mount of Olives. David prayed that the Lord would make Ahithophel's counsel foolishness. As David came to the summit where God was worshiped, Hushai met him. David told Hushai that by returning to Jerusalem, he could thwart Ahithophel's counsel by pretending to be Absalom's servant. He would report everything to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. Their two sons would be messengers for David (2 Sam. 15:30-37).  Pray for God's intervention to thwart a conspiracy.

Is someone offended because you have an unforgiving spirit toward them? Forgive them. Is someone rebelling against your authority because you have disrespected them? Listen to God and the counsel of trusted friends to know what to do and pray together for an outcome that glorifies Him.

God Works Through Unlikely People (Insights in NT)

8/17/2011

Picture
Many times, it's the most unlikely people who believe in Christ and become His most ardent followers.  A person I worked with used to make fun of Christians. Through personal witness of fellow employees, this individual became an enthusiastic disciple of Christ. God transformed Paul from a murderer of Christians to an apostle who was the leading church planter and writer of many books in the New Testament. God loves to surprise by working through unlikely people as you will observe in Luke 23.

Likely People Disbelieve in Christ's Lordship
Bringing Jesus before Pilate, the religious leaders accused Christ of misleading Israel by forbidding them to pay taxes to Caesar and claiming to be Messiah, a King. Pilate found no guilt after asking Him if He was "King of the Jews." Pilate sent Jesus to Herod (Lk. 23:1-7). Religious leaders make up lies while refusing to believe that Jesus is Lord.

Herod was glad to see Jesus and hoped for a sign to be performed by Him. Jesus was silent at His questioning. Herod and his soldiers treated Him with contempt, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Jesus back to Pilate. Herod and Pilate became friends with one another for the first time (Lk. 23:8-12). Political leaders search for signs and miracles instead of making Him Lord.

Pilate told the religious leaders that he found Christ not guilty with nothing deserving of death. They cried out together to crucify Him and release the terrorist and murderer, Barabbas, even though Pilate said three times he wanted to release Jesus. He delivered Jesus to them because of their insistence (Lk. 23:13-25). Religious and political leaders seek political expediency and status quo instead of making Jesus Lord.

Simon bore Jesus' cross with a great multitude following Him with women mourning and  lamenting Him. Jesus told them to stop weeping for Him, but weep for themselves and their children. In the future, the barren would ask mountains to fall on them (Lk. 23:26-31). People seek experiences instead of repenting of their sins.

Religious leaders crucified Jesus and two criminals, one on each side of Him. Jesus told His Father to forgive them since they didn't know what they were doing. Soldiers cast lots and divided His garments among themselves. The rulers and soldiers mocked and exhorted Jesus to save Himself (Lk. 23:32-38). People seek financial gain and to save themselves instead of believing in Christ's death.

Unlikely People Believe in Christ's Lordship
One criminal mocked Jesus and the other feared Him saying He hadn't done anything wrong. Jesus said that he would be with Him in Paradise after saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom" (Lk. 23:39-43). Even criminals can believe in Christ's death.

After the veil of the temple was torn in two, Jesus cried out, "Father, into Thy hands I commit My spirit." The centurion praised God and said Jesus was innocent. The multitudes beat their breasts. All His acquaintances and women accompanying Him stood at a distance (Lk. 23:44-49). Those in the world often believe in Christ before His people.

Joseph, a member of the Council, who was waiting for the kingdom of God went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Joseph wrapped Him in a linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb. The women followed after, returned and prepared spices and perfumes (Lk. 23:50-56). Cultural insiders can believe in Christ's death.

People disbelieve Christ's Lordship by:
1. Making up lies
2. Searching for signs and miracles
3. Seeking political expediency and status quo
4. Seeking experiences, financial gain and saving themselves through their own efforts
Criminals, people of the world and cultural insiders often respond before His people.
