How to Regain Purpose and Hope

Our mission agency, Christ For the City Int’l, spent a day serving during our bi-annual board meetings. During lunch, I sat down next to a man eating alone. I asked, “How’s your day going?”

After an awkward pause, he opened up. I sensed a melancholy spirit. He said his wife of 34 years died in his arms four years ago. She was the love of his life with a “beautiful spirit inside and out.”

This man turned to alcohol and his life spiraled out of control. He remarried, but temporarily lost touch with his second wife. I prayed out loud. Tears seeped out of his eyes. This man once had been a deacon in an evangelical church, but now seemed to have lost all hope.

How do we lose purpose and hope? How do we regain it?

We find a clue in Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness, mentioned three times (Matthew 4:1-11; Mark 1:12-13; Luke 4:1-12). He was led by the Spirit and tempted by the devil. The first was self-gratification (lust of the flesh). If you’re the Son of God, meet the physical need by turning stones into bread. Jesus, like us, need God’s word to withstand the temptation (Matthew 4:1-4).

The second temptation was self-promotion (lust of the eyes). The devil had Jesus stand on the highest point of the temple and throw Himself down. The devil twisted Scripture. Jesus said not to put God to the test (Matthew 4:5-7).

The third temptation was self-exaltation (boastful pride of life). The devil showed all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor so Jesus would worship him. Jesus said to worship and serve God only (Matthew 4:8-11).

Before the temptations, Jesus had a mountain top experience--heaven was opened, saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and heard an affirming voice of unconditional love from heaven (Matthew 3:16-17). When things go well and you feel blessed, beware the devil will blast you with chaos, confusion, and criticism.

After the temptations, Jesus preached, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” Jesus told Peter. Andrew, James, and John to follow Him to become fishers of men. (Matthew 4:17-22). The devil doesn’t want you to share the gospel or disciple others.

On the encouraging side, angels, ministering spirits to serve believers, helped Jesus and will attend to you (Mark 1:12-13; Hebrews 1:14).

If we resist temptation, share our faith and begin discipling others, evil forces will come against us. We must walk in Christ’s authority and drive out evil spirits (Mark 1:21-28).

Because we’re in a spiritual battle, we must fight with the spiritual weapons of prayer and God’s word.
  • It’s important we follow the example of Jesus and pray, preferably early in the morning (Mark 1:35).
The devil is crafty and leaves us until an opportune time. He knows our weaknesses. In Jesus’ case, everyone praised Him as the word got around (Luke 4:13-15). Seeking the praise of others may prevent us from sharing the gospel and discipling others.

Don’t love the world, which include the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and boastful pride of life. Those who do God’s will live forever (1 John 2:15-17).

The greatest purpose and hope we have in life are to follow Jesus in catching men for Him.

How to Pray To See Your Wounds Healed (Insights in Prophets)

Picture
In the preceding book of Micah, you learned how to gain spiritual maturity in order to pray confidently so sin is defeated. Nahum explains how to pray in order to see your wounds healed. By praying God's attributes of goodness, sovereignty, power and truth, your wounds will be healed, especially the lust for control and materialism.

Trust God's Goodness Who Cares
Nahum said the Lord was a jealous God who poured out His wrath like fire against His enemies. He was slow to anger, great in power and did not leave the guilty unpunished. God dried up the sea, withered Bashan and Carmel and trembled the earth. No one withstood His indignation. The Lord was good and a refuge in times of trouble. He cared for those who trusted in Him. He made an end of Nineveh with an overwhelming flood and pursued His foes into darkness (Nahum 1:1-8). Trust God's goodness as a refuge who cares for you in times of trouble.

Trust God's Sovereignty to Bring Good News
God ended plots against Him. Nineveh would be cut down and not afflict Judah any more. God broke their yoke and tore shackles away. He commanded that Nineveh would have no descendants. God destroyed the carved images and cast idols in the temple of their gods. On the mountains was the feet who brought good news and proclaimed peace. Judah celebrated their festivals knowing the wicked would not invade them (Nahum 1:9-15). Trust God's sovereignty to bring the right people to proclaim good news and peace to break the yoke of sin.

Trust God's Power to Restore Health
The Lord would restore Israel's splendor even though the destroyers ruined their vines. Nineveh's troops stumbled and the palace collapsed. It was decreed that the city be exiled like a pool with water draining away. Her wealth was plundered and their hearts melted. God burnt their chariots in smoke and the sword devoured their young lions. The voices of their messengers were no longer heard (Nahum 2:1-13). Trust God's power to restore health and defeat spiritual enemies.

Trust God's Truth to Defeat Lust for Control
Nahum pronounced woe on the city of blood full of lies, plunder and victims because she had lust of a harlot and sorceries. Nineveh enslaved nations by prostitution and witchcraft. God was against her and showed nations her nakedness and shame. All who saw Nineveh said she was ruined and wondered if anyone could comfort her. She was no better than Thebes with Cush, Egypt, Put and Libya as allies and her strength. Thebes was also taken captive, exiled, infants killed and great men chained (Nahum 3:1-11). Trust God's truth to defeat lust for control.

Strengthen Your Spiritual Defenses to Defeat Materialism
Nineveh's fortresses were like fig trees when the first ripe fruit was shaken into the mouth of the eater. The gates of their land were wide open to their enemies with women as troops. They should have strengthened their defenses by repairing the brickwork since fire devoured them. They increased the number of merchants more than the stars who were like locusts that stripped the land. Their guards and officials were like swarms of locusts that flew away when the sun appeared (Nahum 3:12-17). Strengthen your spiritual defenses through prayer to defeat materialism.

Pray God's Attributes to Heal Your Wounds
Their shepherds slumbered, nobles lied down to rest and the people scattered on the mountains. Nothing could heal their wound since their injury was fatal. Everyone who heard news about them celebrated because they felt their endless cruelty (Nahum 3:18-19). Pray God's goodness, sovereignty, power and truth to heal your wounds.

The following explains how to pray in order to see your wounds healed:
1. Trust God's goodness who cares in times of trouble
2. Trust God's sovereignty to bring the right people who proclaim truth and peace
3. Trust God's power to restore health and defeat spiritual enemies
4. Trust God's truth to defeat lust for control
5. Strengthen your spiritual defenses through prayer to defeat materialism
6. Pray God's goodness, sovereignty, power and truth to heal your wounds

How to Confront Sin (Insight in Prophets)

Picture
“Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one--the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts,...Your affectionate uncle, Screwtape" (C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters).

To have boldness to confront sin, hear God's word and see His glory. Listen to the Holy Spirit and speak God's word. Warn people of their sin using object lessons. Open your mouth when God speaks and be silent when He desires. Obey God so you don't waste away in anxiety, despair and slavery. Prophesy God's word against lust of idols.

Hear God's Word and See His Glory
Ezekiel saw visions of God when the heavens opened and His word came to him in Babylon. He saw an immense cloud with flashing lightning surrounded by brilliant light. In the fire looked like four living creatures with four faces and four wings each. Their wings touched one another. Each one had a face of a man and an eagle, on the right side a face of a lion with an ox on the left. The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals of fire moving back and forth. Ezekiel saw a wheel sparkling like chrysolite on the ground beside each creature and intersecting one another. They went in all four directions and the four rims were full of eyes all around. Wherever the spirit would go, the living creatures and wheels went. When the creatures moved, Ezekiel heard the sound of their wings like the roar of rushing waters or voice of the Almighty. Above the expanse over the heads of the creatures looked like a throne of sapphire. High above on the throne was a figure like a man. From his waist up looked like glowing metal full of fire with brilliant light surrounding him, which was the glory of the Lord (Ezek. 1:1-28). Hear God's word and see His glory when the Holy Spirit reveals it.

Listen to the Spirit and Speak God's Word
The Spirit told Ezekiel that He was being sent to the rebellious and stubborn people of Israel. They would know a prophet was among them. He should not fear or be terrified even though he lived among thorns and scorpions. Ezekiel must speak His words whether they listened or not. He must listen to the Spirit, not rebel like rebellious Israel, open his mouth and eat what was given him. He saw a scroll with written words of lament, mourning and woe written on both sides. The Spirit told Ezekiel to eat the scroll, speak to Israel, open his mouth and fill his stomach with it. He ate the scroll and it tasted as sweet as honey in his mouth. They would not listen to Ezekiel because they were not willing to listen to God. Israel was hardened, but did not have an obscure or difficult language. He would make him harder than flint. After the Spirit took him away with bitterness and anger to the exiles living at Tel Aviv, he sat overwhelmed for seven days (Ezek. 2:1-3:15). Listen to the Spirit and speak God's words whether people listen or not.

Warn People of Their Sin
When seven days were complete, God made Ezekiel a watchman to hear His word and warn Israel for Him. When God told a wicked man he would die and Ezekiel did not warn him from his evil ways to save his life, he died for his sin. God held Ezekiel accountable for his blood. If Ezekiel warned the evil man and he did not turn from his wickedness, he died for sin and Ezekiel saved himself. When a righteous man did evil and God put a stumbling block before him, he would die. Since Ezekiel did not warn him, he died for his sin and the righteous things were not remembered. Ezekiel was held accountable for his blood. If Ezekiel warned a righteous man not to sin and took the warning, he lived and Ezekiel saved himself (Ezek. 3:16-21).  Warn people of their sin so they are rescued and you are not  accountable for their blood.

Open Your Mouth When God Speaks
The Lord told Ezekiel to go out to the plain where He would speak to him. There stood God's glory similar to what he saw earlier. The Spirit told him to shut himself inside his house where he was bound with ropes to prevent him from going out. He made his tongue stick to the roof of his mouth to keep him silent unable to rebuke the rebellious house. When God spoke to him, He opened his mouth saying that whoever listened, let him listen and whoever refused, let him refuse (Ezek. 3:22-27). Open your mouth when God speaks and be silent when He desires.

Obey God to Not Waste Away
God told Ezekiel to draw the city of Jerusalem on a clay tablet, erect siege works against it and battering rams around it. As a sign to Israel, he took an iron pan as a wall between him and the city in order to besiege it. God instructed him to lie 390 days on his left side, eat bread and 20 shekels of food using human excrement as fuel. It represented placing 390 years of Israel's sin upon himself and eating defiled food among the nations God would drive them. Then he was to lie down 40 days on his right side to bear 40 years of Judah's sin. God said Jerusalem would eat rationed food in anxiety and drink rationed water in despair because of scarcity. They would waste away because of their sin (Ezek. 4:1-17). Obey God to not waste away in anxiety, despair and slavery.

Use Object Lessons to Warn People
God told Ezekiel to shave his head and burn some of it representing fire and sword spreading to whole house of Israel. He said Jerusalem rebelled against God's laws more than the nations around her. Because of their idols, fathers ate their children and children their fathers. God withdrew His favor because they defiled His sanctuary with vile images and practices. A third of the people died of the plague or famine, another third by the sword outside their walls and a third scattered to the winds being pursued with drawn sword. Jerusalem became a ruin and reproach among the nations with famine, wild beasts, plague, bloodshed and sword against them (Ezek. 5:1-17). Use object lessons to warn people of the deadly consequences of sin or idols leading to famine or plagues.

Prophesy God's Word Against Lust of Idols
Ezekiel heard God's word to prophesy against Israel that a sword destroyed high places, demolished altars, smashed incense altars and killed people in front of their idols. They knew He was Lord. Those who escaped the sword remembered God's grief over their adulterous hearts lusting after idols. They loathed themselves for their evil and knew He was Lord. He made the land a desolate waste from the desert to Diblah (Ezek. 6:1-14). Prophesy God's word against the lust of idols because people hate themselves even though they know He is Lord.

Listen for God's word and see His glory so you are empowered to confront sin.

Fear of God Outshines Everything (Insights in Psalms)

11/1/2012

Picture
"I have an unquenchable desire to slow down and find my life going deeper in my walk with Christ. I want to meet him in the depths of my soul, away from the stress and press of everything on top. A relationship with Christ is the key to fulfilling our deepest longings. All of life is about filling the void that sin and separation from him have created within. Filling the emptiness with piles of things, earthly friendships, satisfying experiences, and sensual encounters ultimately proves to achieve less than what we had hoped for. Christ is the only one who fits" (Joseph M. Stowell).

Job found that God outshines anything else. In Job 28-31, he wrote that the fear of the Lord outshines earthly riches, pleasant circumstances, opinions of other people, lusting after women, injustice against the poor, ungenerosity and merciless.

Earthly Riches
Job said that man searched the deep for metal ore far away from people. He tunneled through the rock to sell all its treasures and bring hidden things to light. Man did not comprehend the worth of wisdom and understanding. It was not found in the deep and cannot be bought with gold or precious stones. The price of wisdom was beyond rubies. Only God knew where it dwelt because He saw everything under the heavens, established the force of the wind and measured out the waters. He appraised, confirmed and tested wisdom. The fear of the Lord is wisdom and to shun evil is understanding (Job 28:1-28). The fear of the Lord outshines earthly riches.

Pleasant Circumstances
Job longed for the days when the blessings of intimate fellowship blessed him and his children. His path was drenched with cream and the rock poured streams of olive oil. Leaders and young men respected his counsel and spoke well of him because he rescued the poor and was a father to the needy. Job thought he would die in his own house and glory would remain fresh on him (Job 29:1-25). The fear of Lord outshines pleasant circumstances.

Opinions of Other People
Men younger than Job mocked him even though he disdained their fathers who little strength and influence. Their sons spat in Job's face, laid snares for his feet and destroyed him. Job's dignity was driven away as by the wind and his safety vanished like a cloud. God reduced him to dust and did not answer his prayers. Job wept for those in trouble and grieved for the poor. When Job hoped for good, evil came. The suffering, churning inside and loneliness never stopped (Job 30:1-31).  The fear of the Lord outshines opinions of other people.

Lusting After Women
Job made a covenant with his eyes not to look lustfully at a girl since God saw his ways. God weighed him with honest scales to determine if he walked in falsehood and deceit. If his eyes led his heart or his hands were defiled, then others could eat what he sown. If his heart was enticed by a woman, then his wife could sleep with other men. Sin must be judged by fire that burned to Destruction to uproot his harvest (Job 31:1-12). The fear of the Lord outshines lusting
after women.

Injustice Against the Poor
God made Job accountable for injustice toward his menservants and maidservants if they had a grievance against him. If he denied the desires of the poor, kept bread or clothing to himself and failed to use his influence in court for the benefit of the fatherless, then he deserved having his arm broken off at the joint. The fear of the Lord prevented Job from acting unjustly (Job 31:13-23). The fear of the Lord outshines injustice against the poor.

Ungenerosity and Merciless
If Job put his security in gold, rejoiced over great wealth and worshiped the sun or moon, then God would judge his sin as being unfaithful to Him. If he rejoiced over his enemy's misfortune, not offered hospitality to strangers and concealed guilt in his heart because of fearing the crowd, then God would judge his sin. Job wished an accuser would put his indictment in writing before God to make him accountable. If he withheld payment to tenants in the fields, then briers and weeds instead of wheat and barley should grow (Job 31:24-40). The fear of the Lord outshines ungenerosity and merciless.

How can you apply Augustine's statement, "To fall in love with God is the greatest of all romances; To seek Him, the greatest adventure; To find him, the greatest human achievement" regarding how the fear of God outshines things listed in this passage?

Focus By Grace on Your Identity in Christ (Insights in NT)

8/14/2012

Picture
"Suppose someone should offer me a plateful of crumbs after I had eaten a T-bone steak. I would say, "No, thank you. I am already satisfied." Christian, that is the secret - you can be so filled with the things of Christ, so enamoured with the things of God that you do not have time for the sinful pleasures of the world " (Billy Graham).

Focusing by grace on your identity in Christ through His death, burial and resurrection is the key to living the Christian life.

Should you keep on sinning so grace increases? Absolutely not! How can you live in sin by already dying to it? Those who were baptized (identified) into Christ were also identified into His death. You were buried with Him through baptism into death so when Christ was raised from the dead, you also may live a new life. You were united with Him in both His death and resurrection. Your old self was crucified with Him so your body of sin might be rendered powerless. As a result, you should no longer be a slave to sin. Because a dead person is freed from sin, believe that you live with Him. Christ's resurrection proves that death is no longer master over Him. In the same way, consider yourself dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus (Rom. 6:1-11). Consider yourself dead to sin but alive to God by identifying with Christ's death and resurrection.

Therefore do not let sin reign in your body so you obey its lusts. Do not offer the various parts of your body as instruments of unrighteousness, but offer the parts of your body to God as alive from the dead and as instruments of righteousness. Sin will not master you because you are under grace, not law (Rom. 6:12-14). Deny lusts and offer up the members of your body as alive to be instruments of righteousness under grace.

Do not excuse sinning because you are under grace instead of law. You are slaves to the one you obey--either slaves of sin leading to death or slaves of obedience leading to righteousness. You became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching you were committed. Being freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness by presenting the parts of your body to righteousness resulting in holiness. You reaped no benefit being a slave to sin and death. Being freed from sin and enslaved to God, you reap holiness and eternal life. The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus (Rom. 6:15-23). Become a slave of obedience to God leading to righteousness, holiness and eternal life.

The law has authority over a man while he is alive. A woman is not an adulteress if she marries another man after her first husband dies. You died to the Law through the body of Christ so you could belong to Him who was raised from the dead to bear fruit to God. Sinful passions aroused by the Law bore fruit for death. Being released from the Law and the written code, you serve in the newness of the Spirit (Rom. 7:1-6). Die to the Law through Christ's body in order to serve in the Spirit.

The Law is not sin! You could not know sin except through the Law. If the Law had not said, "You shall not covet," you would not know about coveting. Sin became alive by taking opportunity through the commandment to produce coveting of every kind resulting in death. For apart from the law, sin is dead. The Law and commandment is holy, righteous and good, but sin taking opportunity through the Law deceived you (Rom. 7:7-13). Understand sin through the Law and how it comes alive to deceive you into death.

The Law is spiritual but I am of flesh sold as a slave to sin. I don't understand what I do. I do not do want I want. I do the evil I hate. I agree the Law is good but nothing good lives in me or my flesh. I cannot carry out my desire to do good. I do the evil I do not want to do because of sin living in me. My inner being delights in God's law, but the law of sin wages war against my mind and the members of my body. What a wretched man I am! Who will set me free from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. My mind serves the law of God, but my flesh the law of sin (Rom. 7:14-25).  Set your flesh and mind free from being a slave of sin through Jesus Christ.

Review these truths concerning your identity in Christ:
1. Consider yourself dead to sin but alive to God by identifying with Christ's death and resurrection.
2. Deny lusts and offer up the members of your body as alive to be instruments of righteousness under grace.
3. Become a slave of obedience to God leading to righteousness, holiness and eternal life.
4. Die to the Law through Christ's body in order to serve in the Spirit.
5.
Understand sin through the Law and how it comes alive to deceive you into death.
6.
Set your flesh and mind free from being a slave of sin through Jesus Christ.

Long-Term Benefits of Wisdom (Insights in Psalms)

7/29/2012

Picture
Instead of craving riches and what other people possess, a wise person sees the value of hard work, which prevents poverty. Sexual lust and alcoholism may be pleasurable for the short-term, but it leads to disappointment and confusion. However, wisdom is sweet to the soul and gives security and hope for the future.  Wisdom and knowledge gained from many advisers allow your plans to succeed. Proverbs 23-24 shows the long-term benefits of wisdom.

Do not crave a ruler's or stingy man's deceptive food. You waste your compliments because their hearts are not with you. Do not overwork to gain temporary riches. Do not speak to a fool as he will scorn the wisdom of your words. Since God defends the fields of the fatherless, don't move the boundaries as He will take up their case against you (Prov. 23:1-11). Wisdom prevents the craving for riches and what other people possess.

Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to knowledge. Do not withhold discipline from a child as the rod will save his soul from death. A father's heart is glad when a son's heart is wise and his lips speak righteously. Do not envy sinners but always fear the Lord zealously because of future hope. Keep your heart on the right path. Don't join drunkards or gluttons who become poor (Prov. 23:12-21). Wisdom protects you from poverty caused by alcoholism and gluttony.

Get wisdom, discipline and understanding from your father and mother. The father of a wise son has great joy and delights in him. His righteousness protects him from prostitutes, wayward wife and alcoholism that multiplies unfaithfulness, confusion and dissatisfaction (Prov. 23:22-35). Parents' wisdom protects you from sexual lust and party spirit that lead to confusion and dissatisfaction.

Do not envy or desire the company of evil men since their hearts plot violence. By wisdom a house is built, through understanding it is established and through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures. A wise man has great power and a man of knowledge increases strength. Guidance and many advisers are required to wage a winning war. A fool has no wisdom to share with leaders. A schemer plots evil and men detest a mocker (Prov. 24:1-9).
Wisdom and knowledge from many advisers increase power and strength so you can adopt successful plans.

Those who falter in times of trouble have little strength. Rescue those being led away to death. God weighs hearts and repays according to what each has done. Those who find wisdom that is sweet to the soul have security and a future hope. A righteous man rises again even after falling seven times, but the wicked are brought down by calamity. If you gloat when your enemy falls, the Lord will turn his wrath away from him. Do not fret or be envious of the wicked who have no future hope (Prov. 24:10-20). Wisdom provides contentment and a future hope.

Fear the Lord and the king, but do not join the rebellious to be destroyed by calamity. People curse those who judge with partiality in telling the guilty that they are innocent. Rich blessing comes upon those who convict the guilty. An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips (Prov. 24:21-26). Wisdom enables blessing with discernment as you submit to the Lord and human authorities.

Finish your outdoor work and get your fields ready before building your house. Testify truthfully against your neighbor without deception or revenge. A lazy man lacks judgment because his field has thorns everywhere, his ground is covered with weeds and his stone wall is in ruins, resulting in poverty and scarcity (Prov. 24:27-34). Wisdom promotes hard work in your vocation to prevent poverty and scarcity.

Consider the long-term benefits of wisdom and choose the one that is most meaningful to apply:
1. Prevents the craving for riches and what other people possess
2. Protects you from poverty caused by alcoholism and gluttony
3. Protects you from sexual lust and party spirit that lead to confusion and dissatisfaction
4. Increase power and strength from many advisers leading to successful plans
5. Provides contentment and a future hope
6. Wisdom experiences blessing as it submits to the Lord and human authorities in discerning people truthfully
7. Wisdom promotes hard work in your vocation to prevent poverty and scarcity

Pay the Price When Your Heart Turns Away from God (Insights in Prophets)

3/5/2012

Picture
We lose out in achieving our full kingdom potential by allowing fleshly lust and worldly prestige turn our hearts away from God. Even more tragic, we lose sweet fellowship with God.  Solomon started out well, but he paid the price when his heart away from the Lord. You can be wise and give good advice like Solomon, but not follow it yourself.

King Solomon loved 700 foreign wives and 300 concubines forbidden by Israel to associate with. They turned Solomon's heart away after their gods so he was not wholly devoted to the Lord his God.  He went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidoninans, Milcom of the Ammonites and built a high place for Chemosh the idol of Moah and for Molech of Ammon (1 Kings 11:1-8). Fleshly lust and worldly prestige turn your heart away from God.

The Lord was angry because after appearing to him twice, Solomon turned his heart away from God. He commanded him to not go after after gods to disobey God. He told Solomon that he would tear his kingdom and give it to his servant during the reign of his son for the sake David and Jerusalem (1 Kings 11:9-13). Spiritual experiences don't prevent your heart turning away from God.

The Lord raised up Hadad the Edomite as an adversary to Solomon. He escaped to Egypt when Joab, David's army commander, killed every male in Edom. God also raised up Rezon and gathered men to himself after David killed others in Zodak. He abhorred Israel and reigned over Aram (1 Kings 11:14-25). Outside enemies come against you when your heart turns away from God to make life more complicated.

Jeroboam, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, rebelled against Solomon because he built the Millo and closed up the breach in Jerusalem. Jeroboam was an industrious, valiant warrior over the the forced labor of the house of Joseph. The prophet Ahijah met him and tore his cloak in 12 pieces. He gave Jeroboam ten pieces predicting he would rule ten tribes and Solomon's son would rule one tribe because of his father's disobedience. Ahijah told Jeroboam that God would build an enduring house like David's if he observed His commandments. When Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, he fled to Egypt until Solomon died and Rehoboam became king (1 Kings 11:26-43). Inside enemies come when your heart turns away from God so you can't embrace God's promises.

What if Solomon followed his advice in Prov. 3:1-10? Will you follow it?

Lust Leads to Family Problems (Insights in Prophets)

11/3/2011

Picture
Lust or strong sexual desire for someone transfers down from one generation to another. David's lust of  Bathsheba (2 Sam. 12) set up his son to also make a wrong decision, which resulted in the following chain act sinfully, refuse wise counsel, harm innocent people, cause offense, trigger revenge and reap family problems.

Wrong Decision

David's two sons, Absalom and Amnon, had a beautiful sister, Tamar, that the latter loved. Amnon pretended to be ill and asked David for Tamar to come and make cakes so he could eat from her hand (2 Sam. 13:1-6). Lust sets people up to make wrong decisions.

Sinful Act
Amnon refused to eat and had everyone leave except Tamar. He took hold of her and asked that she have sex with him. Tamar begged Amnon to not violate her since she could not remove the reproach and he would a fool in Israel. He didn't listen and committed incest (2 Sam. 13:7-14). Lust causes sinful acts and the inability to hear wise counsel.

Harm Innocent People
Amnon's hate for Tamar was greater than his love for her. He told her to go away but she said the wrong in sending her away was greater than his incest. When she was thrown out, Tamar put ashes on her head, tore her long-sleeved garment and cried aloud as she went (2 Sam. 13:15-19). Lust causes hate that harms innocent people.

Cause Offense
Absalom told her to not be concerned as she remained desolate in his house. David was very angry and Absalom hated Amnon (2 Sam. 13:20-22). Violation of someone causes others to take up the offense.

Trigger Revenge
After two years, Absalom invited all of David's sons. David allowed Amnon to attend but refused to go even though Absalom urged him. He commanded his servants to kill Amnon when he was drunk, causing David's sons to flee. David received a false report that Absalom killed all his sons. While he was mourning, Jonadab told him that Amnon alone was dead since Absalom's intent was revenge after he violated Tamar (2 Sam. 13:23-33). Taking up someone's offense causes revenge, additional sin and false reports.

Reap Family Problems
When Absalom fled, David's sons and servants came, mourned and wept bitterly together. David mourned three years everyday for Absalom while he was in Geshur. He longed to go out to Absalom for he was comforted concerning Amnon (2 Sam. 13:34-39). By sowing lust and hate, you reap grief and family problems.

Before you allow the temptation of lust move to sin, consider the severe family problems that you would reap. Allow another person's beauty remind you of God's so you love instead of lust.

How to Deal with Sin (Insights in Prophets)

A person can't make progress in living the Christian life unless he or she confesses their sin. Pride causes a person to despise God's word. Severe consequences like family chaos and even death, will result from unconfessed sin. In addition, it gives occasion for the world to reject God. David shows both the negative and positive  example on how to deal with sin.

Conviction
Nathan came to David and told a story about a rich man with many flocks and herds while a poor man had only a little ewe lamb. A traveler came to the rich man who wouldn't provide a meal from his flock. Instead, he took the poor man's lamb. David said this rich man deserved to die and must make restitution for the lamb fourfold because he had no compassion (2 Sam. 12:1-6). Stories touch peoples' hearts to convict them of sin.

Confession
Nathan said David was the rich man in the story who God anointed king over Israel, delivered and gave him Saul's house and wives along with the house of Israel and Judah. Nathan asked why he despised the Lord's word by doing evil in killing Uriah with the sword and taking his wife. Because of David's sin, the sword would never depart from his house and God would expose the evil in his household before Israel when his companion had sex with his wives. David confessed his secret sin to the Lord and Nathan said He took it away so he wouldn't die. The sin resulting in a child being born and dying gave opportunity for the Lord's enemies to reject God (2 Sam. 12:7-15a). Confess sin to remove it even though there are consequences.

Beloved
David inquired of God and fasted all night for his sick child. On the seventh day, the child died and David worshiped God. He comforted his wife Bathsheba and they gave birth to Solomon who Nathan named, beloved of the Lord (2 Sam. 12:15b-25). God loves you and works out His gracious purpose in spite of sin.

Battle
Joab fought against Rabbah in Ammon and captured the royal city. Instead of receiving glory over the victory, Joab asked David and his army to capture it. He brought out its spoil in great amounts and sawed everyone among the cities of Ammon (2 Sam. 12:26-31). Fight the spiritual battle in confessing sin until God is victorious over the world, flesh and devil.

Consider the following questions:
1. Are you or a person in relationship with you dealing with sin?
2. If you are the one in sin, ask God to show you why. If a friend is in sin, ask God to reveal a story and/or key questions to touch their heart. so he or she is convicted of their sin.
3. Pray for conviction of sin in your heart along with your friend's heart (Gal. 6:1).
4. Instead of hiding and rationalizing away sin, confess it to others of the same gender and pray for one another so you and they may be healed (1 John 1:9; James 5:16).

My goal is to ignite the hearts of people by explaining God's word in the Law, Prophets, Psalms and New Testament consecutively, much like the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:32,44). I have been a missionary in Lincoln, NE, for 13 years with Christ For the City Int. and Sync with God.

Sync with God is a highly versatile web app that hosts on-demand, virtual small groups. Sync is designed to connect young seekers in the faith and scripturally-trained mentors, even globally. It offers a safe, engaging interface for Millennials/Gen. Z and is readily adaptable to technical advances well into the future.
