Develop Closer Relationships Between Fathers and Children (Insights in Prophets)

To release God's healing for closer heart relationships between fathers and children, surrender your heart to teach whole Bible so you create desire for instruction, unified marriage, purified people, hate oppression, give financially to God's kingdom and expect God to write a scroll of remembrance.

Surrender Your Heart to Show God's Greatness
Malachi told Israel that God showed love by loving Jacob and hating Esau. He turned his mountains into a wasteland called The Wicked Land.  God continually demolished it to prove His greatness to Israel. They did not honor and respect God like a son to His father. The priests despised His name by sacrificing crippled or diseased animals on the altar they would not offer to their governor. God was displeased and found these useless fires unacceptable. They shamed and cheated Him by sacrificing blemished animals instead of offering acceptable males they vowed to give. Israel was to show nations that God was to be feared as a great king (Mal. 1:1-14). Surrender your heart to show God's greatness to unbelievers.

Teach Whole Bible to Create Desire for Instruction
If priests did not set their heart to listen or honor God, He sent a curse and cut off their descendants. He made a covenant of life and peace with Levi so they could reverence His name. True instruction was in his mouth as he walked in peace and uprightness turning many from sin. Priests should preserve knowledge so men would seek instruction from the messenger of the Lord Almighty. But they turned from the way, violated the covenant with Levi and their teaching caused many to stumble. God caused them to be despised and humiliated before everyone since they did not follow His ways showing partiality in matters of the law (Mal. 2:1-9). Teach whole Bible to turn people from sin and create desire for instruction.

Guard Your Spirit for Unified Marriage to Bear Godly Offspring
Judah broke faith with one another by marrying the daughter of a foreign god. God did not accept their offerings because they broke their marriage bond through divorce. He sought godly offspring from the one flesh relationship between husband and wife. Husbands who guarded their spirit prevented breaking faith with the wife of their youth since God hated divorce (Mal. 2:10-16). Guard your spirit for unified marriage to bear godly offspring.

Participate with God to Purify His People and Hate Oppression
They wearied Him saying those who did evil were pleasing to Him and questioning whether there was a God of justice. No one could stand the refiner's fire of God's coming as He purified the Levites like gold and silver. Judah's and Jerusalem's righteous offerings would be acceptable. God would judge sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers. He was against those who defrauded laborers of their wages, oppressed the widows and fatherless, and deprived aliens of justice without fearing God (Mal. 2:17-3:5). Participate with God to purify His people and hate oppression of others.

Give Financially to God's Kingdom and Reap His Blessing
His people should return to God and His word so He would return to them. He cursed Israel because they robbed Him of tithes and offerings. Bringing the whole tithe into the storehouse brought food into His house. By testing Him, they saw Him open the floodgates of heaven to pour out so much blessing that there was no room for it. He prevented pests from devouring crops and fruit from their  fields. All nations called them blessed in a delightful land (Mal. 3:6-12). Give financially to God's kingdom and reap His blessing.

Expect God to Write a Scroll of Remembrance By Fearing Him
Israel said it was futile to serve God since evildoers prospered and those who challenged God escaped. The Lord listened and wrote a scroll of remembrance for people who feared Him and talked with each other. He distinguished between those who served God as His treasured possession and those who did not (Mal. 3:13-18). Expect God to write a scroll of remembrance by fearing Him.

Release God's Healing for Closer Heart Relationships Between Fathers and Children
A day would come to burn the arrogant and every evildoer. For those who revered God's name, the sun of righteousness would rise with healing so they leaped like calves released from the stall. They trampled down the wicked like ashes under their feet. Malachi commanded Israel to remember the law God gave Moses at Horeb. He would send Elijah before the dreadful day of the Lord to turn the hearts of fathers to their children and hearts of children to their fathers or else curse the land (Mal. 4:1-6). Release God's healing for closer heart relationships between fathers and children.

To release God's healing for closer heart relationships between fathers and children:
1. Surrender your heart to teach whole Bible
2. Turn people from sin
3. Create desire for instruction
4. Guard your spirit for unified marriage
5. Bear godly children
6. Participate with God to purify His people
7. Hate oppression of others
8. Give financially to God's kingdom and reap His blessings
9. Expect God to write a scroll of remembrance

Implementing a Larger Vision of the Church (Insights in NT)

1/11/2013

Picture
Jesus used on-the-job training in equipping His disciples as they served in the world. This became a starting point for implementing a larger vision of the church studied earlier in Eph. 1-3. Eph. 4-6 instructs how to  implement the church's larger vision  by equipping believers for works of service and teaching the truth of Christ so believers are filled with the Holy Spirit to do God's will in their home, work and city realizing their spiritual battle against evil forces.

Equip Believers for Works of Service
Paul urged them to live a life worthy of their calling in humility, gentleness, patience, love and unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. God called them to one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who was over, through and in all. Christ gave grace gifts to fill the whole universe when He ascended on high and led captives in His train. He gave some as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers to equip God's people for works of service toward building up the church until all reached unity of faith,  knowledge and maturity in Christ. Reject crafty and deceitful teaching in order to speak the truth in love so everyone would grow up in all things through Christ, the Head. In Him, the whole body was joined and held together by every supporting ligament to build itself up in love as each part did its work (Eph. 4:1-16).  Equip believers for works of service toward Christ-centered maturity so everyone works together in love and unity.

Teach Truth of Christ
Futile thinking, darkened understanding and separation from the life of God due to ignorance because of hardness of heart led to sensuality, lust and impurity. Teaching the truth of Christ enabled people to put off the old self corrupted by deceitful desires. By renewing their minds, they put on the new self created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. They rejected falsehood and spoke truthfully as members of one body. They resolved anger daily to prevent the devil's foothold. Instead of stealing, they did manual work and shared with the needy. Rather than unwholesome talk, they spoke helpful things that met the listener's needs. They did not grieve the Holy Spirit who sealed them for the day of redemption. Instead of bitterness, rage, anger, slander and malice, they were kind, compassionate and forgiving just as Christ forgave them (Eph. 4:17-32). Teach the truth of Christ so believers renew their minds and practice truth, love and forgiveness.

Be Filled With Spirit
They imitated God through a loving lifestyle because of Christ's love and sacrifice for them. They rejected sexual immorality, impurity, greed, obscenity, foolish talk and coarse joking and embraced thanksgiving. Immoral, impure and greedy idolaters experienced God's wrath without inheritance in the kingdom of Christ. Living as children of light in goodness, righteousness and truth, they pleased the Lord and exposed the fruitless deeds of darkness. Christ shined on those who woke up spiritually from the dead. Through wisdom, they made the most of the opportunity, understood God's will and filled with the Spirit. The fruit was speaking to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs while making music in their hearts to God. They always gave thanks to God for everything in Christ's name and submitted to one another out of reverence for Him (Eph. 5:1-21).  Be filled with the Spirit to expose darkness, do God's will, give thanks and submit to one another.

Love and Lead Your Wife
Wives submitted to their husbands as to the Lord since husbands were head and Savior like Christ over the church. Wives submitted to their husbands in everything like the church submitted to Christ. Husbands loved their wives as Christ loved and gave Himself up for the church. He made her holy by washing her with water through the word. He presented her to Himself as a radiant, holy and blameless church without blemish. Likewise, husbands should love their wives as their own bodies by feeding and caring for it as Christ with the church. For this reason, a man left his father and mother and united with his wife so the two became one flesh. Husbands loved their wives as themselves and wives respected their husbands (Eph. 5:22-33). Love and lead your wife as she submits and respects her husband as a positive demonstration of Christ's relationship with the church.

Train Children and Serve Christ Wholeheartedly
Children obeyed and honored their parents in the Lord so it would go well in living longer. Fathers trained and instructed their children in the Lord instead of exasperating them. Slaves obeyed their earthly masters with respect, fear and sincerity of heart just as they obeyed Christ and doing God's will from their heart. They served the Lord wholeheartedly, not men, knowing God rewarded everyone for good they did. Masters treated their slaves similarly without threatening knowing their Master in heaven showed no favoritism (Eph. 6:1-9). Train children in the Lord and serve Christ wholeheartedly at work to earn His reward.

Put On God's Armor
They relied on God's mighty power by putting on His armor. They stood against the devil's schemes since their struggle was not against humans but against rulers, authorities, powers of this dark world and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. They stood firm with the belt of truth buckled around their waist and the breastplate of righteousness in place. They fitted their feet with readiness using the gospel of peace and took up the shield of faith to extinguish the evil one's flaming arrows. They took the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, God's word, to pray in the Spirit for all believers and their situations with all kinds of prayers and requests. Paul requested prayer for the right words in fearlessly making the gospel known as   an ambassador in chains. Tychicus told them his condition and activities to encourage them. He prayed that those who loved Christ  experience peace, love with faith and grace (Eph. 6:10-24). Put on God's armor using His word to pray in the Spirit so the gospel can go forth with boldness.

Pray through the following action points to see a larger vision of the church be implemented in your city:
1. Equip believers for works of service toward Christ-centered maturity so everyone works together in love and unity
2. Teach the truth of Christ so believers renew their minds and practice truth, love and forgiveness
3. Be filled with the Spirit to expose darkness, do God's will, give thanks and submit to one another
4.  Love and lead your wife as she submits and respects her husband as a positive demonstration of Christ's relationship with the church
5. Train children in the Lord and serve Christ wholeheartedly at work to earn His reward
6. Put on God's armor using His word to pray in the Spirit so the gospel can go forth with boldness

Necessity of Nurturing Love in Marriage (Insights in Psalms)

"There aren't any easy answers to the questions being raised today, and it may be too easy for me to remember Jesus saying, "Greater love has no man than to give up his life for his friend." Or wife, or children. Isn't staying with your family sometimes a real equivalent of giving up your own life? Cannot it sometimes be a blessing, especially if it is given with graciousness, not rigid rectitude? I believe that it can, because I know of families where this is what has happened. Sacrifice is no longer popular, but I think that sometimes it can lead to true joy. Even the simplest of unions does not come free. There is always sacrifice" (Madeleine L'Engle).

Love must be nurtured before it can be maintained in a marriage. It can easily lose vibrancy and contentment.

Friends asked where the lovers went. He browsed in the gardens. I am my lover's and my lover is mine. You are beautiful, my darling. Your hair is like a flock of goats and teeth like a flock of sheep. My dove, my perfect one, is unique. Maidens called her blessed and queens praised her. Who appeared like the dawn and majestic as the stars? Friends asked if they could gaze on her (Songs 6:1-13). Praise your wife to build a unified marriage.

Your graceful legs were like jewels, breasts like two fawns, neck like an ivory tower and head crowned you like Mount Carmel. How beautiful and pleasing are you with your delights. Your stature was like a palm and breasts like clusters of fruit .  I will climb the palm tree and take hold of its fruit. Your breasts were like clusters of the vine and mouth like the best wine. I belong to my lover and his desire is for me. Let us go to the countryside, spend the night in the villages and go to the vineyards to give you love (Songs 7:1-13). Create a positive atmosphere to nurture lovemaking.

His left arm was under my head and his right arm embraced me. Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desired. Place me like a seal over your heart for love was as strong as death and its jealousy burned like a mighty flame. Many waters could not quench or wash away love (Songs 8:1-7). Nurture love so it is not quenched in your marriage.

A young sister was not yet grown. If she was a wall, they build towers of silver on her. If she was a door, they enclosed her with panels of cedar (Songs 8:8-9). Maintain purity of young women until they are ready for marriage.

She was a wall and her breasts were like towers. She became in his eyes like one bringing contentment. Solomon's vineyard brought for its fruit 1000 shekels of silver. She gave her vineyard to Solomon for 1000 shekels and 200 for those who tended its fruit. Come away, my lover, like a young stag on the spice-laden mountains (Songs 8:10-14).
Satisfy your spouse to ensure vibrancy and contentment in your marriage.

How are you nurturing love in your marriage? Where do you need repentance to get back on track so you maintain vibrancy in your marriage?

How to Create a Loving and Intimate Marriage (Insights in Psalms)

11/21/2012

Picture
"The loving and much loved wife is satisfied with the love of her husband; his smile is her joy, she cares little for any other. So, if you have come to Christ, thy Maker is thine husband - His free love to you is all you need, and all you can care for - there is no cloud between you and God - there is no veil between you and the Father; you have access to Him who is the fountain of happiness - what have you to do any more with idols? Oh! if your heart swims in the rays of God's love, like a little mote swimming in the sunbeam, you will have no room in your heart for idols" (Robert Murray M'Cheyne).

Marriage was designed by God as a visual picture of how Christ as husband loves the church, His bride. Christ's love motivates each of us to spend time with Him and our spouses. Two people come into a marriage as imperfect people with deep wounds from childhood. It takes prayer and loving communication initiated by the husband for both of them to leave their mother and father emotionally, spiritually, mentally and physically to cleave to each other. Our loving and intimate marriage provide natural opportunities to share the gospel of Christ. Then we can follow Peter's exhortation to "always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have" (1 Pet. 3:15).

For his love was more delightful than wine and his name like perfume poured out. Let us hurry so you can take me away. The king has brought me into his chambers. We rejoice, delight in you and praise your love more than wine. Do not stare at me because I am dark. My mother's sons were angry with me so I had to care for vineyards. I neglected my own vineyard (Songs 1:1-7). Exalt in God's love so couples are motivated to spend time together.

Graze your young goats by the tents of the shepherds. I liken my darling to a mare harnessed to Pharaoh's chariot. Your cheeks are beautiful with earrings and neck with strings of jewels. My perfume spread its fragrance at the king's table. My lover is like a sachet of myrrh resting between my breasts and a cluster of henna blossoms from the vineyards of En Gedi. How beautiful you are, my darling. Your eyes are doves. How handsome and charming you are, my lover (Songs 1:8-17). Listen to God's love to find your wife beautiful.

My darling is like a lily among thorns among the maidens. My lover is like an apple tree among the trees of the forest among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade and his fruit is sweet to my taste. He has taken me to the banquet hall and his banner over me is love. Strengthen and refresh me for I am faint with love. She charged the daughters of Jerusalem to not arouse love until it so desires. My lover said to me, "Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, and come with me." Show me your lovely face and let me hear you sweet voice. Catch the little foxes that ruin the blooming vineyards. My lover is mine and I am his (Songs 2:1-17). Allow God's love to strengthen and refresh your relationship with Him and in marriage.

I looked for the one my heart loves all night long on my bed. I searched for him through the city streets and squares even asking the watchmen if they had seen him. I found and held him without letting him go until I brought him to my mother's house. Do not awaken love until it so desires. Look at Solomon's carriage escorted by 60 warriors wearing the sword experienced in battle and prepared for the terrors of the night. King Solomon made the carriage of wood from Lebanon, posts of silver, base of gold, seat upholstered with purple and interior lovingly inlaid by the daughters of Jerusalem. Come out you daughters of Zion and look at King Solomon wearing the crown that his mother crowned him on the day of his wedding (Songs 3:1-11). Pray together  to receive healing of childhood issues to you can cleave to one other in love, unity and intimacy.

How beautiful you are my darling as there is no flaw in you. Your veiled eyes are doves, hair like a flock of goats, teeth like a flock of sheep just shorn, lips like a scarlet ribbon, mouth is lovely, temples like the halves of a pomegranate, neck like the tower of David built with a 1,000 shields of warriors hanging on it and two breasts like two fawns browsing among the lilies. I will go to the mountain of myrrh and hill of incense. Come with me from Lebanon, lions's dens and mountain haunts of the leopards, my bride. You stole my heart with one glance of your eyes and one jewel of your necklace. Your love is more pleasing than wine and the fragrance of your perfume than any spice. Your lips drop sweetness as the honeycomb with milk and honey under your tongue. Your are a garden locked up, spring enclosed and sealed fountain. Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates with choice fruits, myrrh and all the finest spices. You are a garden fountain and well of flowing water streaming down from Lebanon. Blow on my garden that its fragrance may spread abroad. Let my lover come into his garden and taste its choice fruits (Songs 4:1-16). Communicate to your wife in visual language that she is beautiful without flaws so she can respond freely without reservations.

I came into my garden and gathered myrrh with spice, my sister and bride. Eat, O friends, and drink your fill, O lovers. I slept but my heart was awake listening for the knocking of my lover saying, "Open to me, my sister, my darling, my dove, my flawless one." My lover thrust his hand through the latch-opening. I arose to open it with my hands dripped with myrrh, but he was gone. As I looked for him, the watchmen of the walls beat and bruised me and took my cloak. She charged the daughters of Jerusalem to find and tell her lover that she is faint with love  (Songs 5:1-8). Seek God and tell others that you love Him because He protects you from danger.

They asked how her beloved was better than others, She responded that her lover is radiant and ruddy, outstanding among 10,000. His head is purest gold with wavy, black hair, eyes like doves by the water streams washed in milk mounted like jewels. His cheeks are like beds of spice yielding perfume, lips like lilies dripping with myrrh, arms are rods of gold set with chrysolite, body like polished ivory decorated with sapphires, legs are pillars of marble set on bases of pure gold, his appearance like Lebanon choice as its cedars and his mouth is sweetness and altogether lovely. This is my lover and friend, daughters of Jerusalem (Songs 5:9-16). Explain articulately and specifically why you love God when others ask about your hope.

Consider the following process in creating a loving and intimate marriage:
1. Couples exalt in God's love to motivate them to spend time together
2. Husbands listen to God's love so He finds his wife beautiful
3. Couples allow God's love to strengthen and refresh both their relationship with Him and marriage
4. Husbands lead in prayer so the couple receives healing from childhood issues and cleave to one other in love, unity and intimacy5. Husbands communicate in visual language to their wife that she is beautiful without flaws so she can respond freely without reservations
6. Seek God and tell others that you love Him because He protects you from danger
7. When others ask about your hope, explain articulately and specifically why you love God

Benefits of Holiness (Insights in Law)

11/10/2012

Picture
"I've discovered I cannot fight the demons of busyness directly. I cannot continuously say "No" to this or "No" to that, unless there is something ten times more attractive to choose. Saying "No" to my lust, my greed, my needs, and the world's powers takes an enormous amount of energy. The only hope is to find something so obviously real and attractive that I can devote all my energies to saying "Yes." In effect, I don't have time to pay any attention to the distractions"  (Henri J. M. Nouwen).

Holiness affects every part of your life to help you live skillfully. Other benefits of holiness include power to defeat spiritual enemies, gain God's blessings, prevent divorce, freed from bondage to sin, live long, forget bad memories and overcome weaknesses.

Defeat Spiritual Enemies
No one with his male organ cut off or a forbidden marriage, including descendants to the tenth generation, could enter the assembly of Lord. No Ammonite or Moabite could enter assembly of Lord to the tenth generation, because they did not meet Israel with food and water when they came out of Egypt, but hired Balaam to curse them. The Lord did not listen to Balaam, but turned his curse into blessing because of His love. They could not seek their peace or have good relations with them. Do not detest an Edomite or Egyptian since they were brothers and lived as aliens in their country. The sons of the third generation could enter the assembly of the Lord. Avoid evil things as Israel’s army faced its enemies. An unclean man went outside the camp and when evening came, he bathed and removed waste. Because God walked with them to defeat their enemies, they were holy and prevented indecency so He would not turn away from them (Deut. 23:1-14). Maintain physical and spiritual holiness so God’s power can defeat your spiritual enemies.

Gain God's Blessings
Do not mistreat a slave who escaped from his master, but let him live where he wanted. No children could be a cult prostitute or bring their wages into the house of the Lord to pay a vow. Do not charge brothers interest so God could bless them in the land they would possess. Pay vows made to the Lord and not be guilty of sin. They could eat grapes from a neighbor’s vineyard, but not carry them away (Deut. 23:15-25). Pursue sexual purity, fulfill verbal promises and treat people fairly in financial matters to gain God's blessings.

Prevent Divorce
If a man found his wife displeasing and then divorced her so she married someone else, the first husband could not take her as his wife since it was sinful. A man was exempt from military duty during his first year of marriage so he could stay home and bring happiness to his wife (Deut. 24:1-5). Spend extra time with your wife in the first year to build a strong marital foundation and prevent divorce.

Freed From Bondage to Sin
Refuse an upper millstone as pledge for a debt since it took a man’s livelihood as security. If a man kidnapped an Israelite who was treated as a slave or sold, the kidnapper must die to purge away evil. Follow carefully what Levitical priests instructed concerning leprous diseases while remembering what God did to Miriam coming out of Egypt. Show patience in collecting loans from a poor neighbor by allowing him to sleep in his cloak leading to thanks for this righteous act in God’s sight. Do not take advantage of a needy Israelite or alien servant, but pay his wages daily and not be guilty of sin. Fathers did not die for their sons nor sons for their fathers since each would die for their own sin. Leave some grain during harvest and do not deprive the alien, fatherless or widow by taking their cloak as pledge to remember how God redeemed them from slavery in Egypt (Deut. 24:6-22). Be financially kind to the needy and stress personal accountability since God freed you from the bondage of sin.

Live Long

Judges decided a dispute in court acquitting the innocent and condemning the wicked in proportion to his guilt. Do not muzzle an ox while he was threshing. The wife of a deceased brother living together would marry his brother to fulfill his duty and carry on the name of his dead brother. If a wife seized the private parts of a man struggling with her husband, cut off her hand and not show pity. Have accurate and honest weights or measures to live long in the land God gave since He hated dishonesty (Deut. 25:1-16). Use accurate and fair guidelines to decide court verdicts, set wages, show considerations toward extended family and determine pricing of goods and services to live long.

Forget Bad Memories and Overcome Weaknesses

Remember what Amalek did when they attacked the Israelites who lagged behind after leaving Egypt. Amalek showed they lacked the fear of God. After the Lord gave rest from their enemies, they blotted out the memory of the Amaleks (Deut. 25:17-19). Spiritual victory and strength enables you to forget bad memories and overcome weaknesses.

Which of the following benefits of holiness are most meaning to you right now: power to defeat spiritual enemies, gain God's blessings, prevent divorce, freed from bondage to sin, live long, forget bad memories and overcome weaknesses?

Principles in Staying Devoted to Jesus No Matter Your Marital Status (Insights in NT)

10/26/2012

Picture
"Unfaithfulness in the key relationships of life is a common failure for many people in contemporary society. This lack leads to so much misery. We who trust Christ must not allow the world to squeeze us into its mold. What wonderful blessings flow from faithfulness in keeping our vows. Examine your life. Is it characterized by faithfulness? God is faithful. He keeps his promises to us. Keep your promises to God and to those with whom you have entered into covenant" (Harry Buis).

No matter your marital status, God demands holiness and complete devotion to Jesus Christ to show the world that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. In 1 Cor. 5-7, Paul lists principles in staying devoted to Jesus Christ whether you are married or not. Loving church discipline serves a vital role.

Confront Sin in Believers’ Lives with Sincerity and Truth
Paul reported sexual immorality that did not occur among unbelievers when a man had his father's wife. Rather than being proud, grief should have motivated them to put out the man from their fellowship. Paul told them to hand the man over to Satan so his flesh would be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord. A little yeast worked through the whole batch of dough. Remove the old yeast of malice and wickedness and replace it with the bread of sincerity and truth because Christ was sacrificed as the Passover lamb (1 Cor. 5:1-8). Confront sin in believers' lives with sincerity and truth.

Disassociate with Sinning Believers But Let God Judge Unbelievers
Continue associating with the evil people of the world, but do not even eat with those who call themselves brothers who were sexually immoral, greedy, idolaters, slanderers, drunkards or swindlers. Judge those inside the church and God would judge those outside. Expel the wicked man from among you (1 Cor. 5:9-13). Disassociate with sinning believers, but let God judge unbelievers.

Suffer Unjustly to Show World Your Transformed Life Instead of Court Date with Believers
Do not let courts settle disputes between believers. If saints judged the world and angels, wise believers have competency to judge trivial cases. Having lawsuits proved they had been defeated already. It would be better to be wronged or cheated by a brother. The wicked would not inherit the kingdom of God. Some of those in the church had been sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexual offenders, thieves, greedy, drunkards, slanders and swindlers but now they were washed, sanctified and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:1-11). Suffer unjustly to show the world your transformed life instead of court date with believers.

Flee Sexual Immorality Because Your Body is Temple of the Holy Spirit
Everything was permissible but not everything was beneficial since it could master them. The body was designed for the Lord, not sexual immorality. God would raise them up like He raised Jesus from the dead. Because their bodies were members of Christ Himself, they could not unite themselves with a prostitute and become one flesh with her. He who united himself with the Lord became one with Him in spirit. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin people committed were outside their body but sexual sins were against their own body. One's body was a temple of the Holy Spirit who was in them and received from God. Since they were not their own and bought with a price, it was appropriate to honor God with their body (1 Cor. 6:12-20). Flee sexual immorality because your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Experience Marital Unity and Reject Passion Toward Someone Else Causing Divorce
Paul said it was good not to marry but because of immorality each man should have his own wife. A couple should fulfill their marital duty to one another since their bodies do not belong to them. Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent for the purpose of prayer. Come together to prevent temptation from Satan because of lacking self-control. Not everyone had the gift of celibacy like Paul. The unmarried and widows should stay unmarried, but being married was better than burning with passion. A spouse should not separate or divorce their partner. If they did, remain unmarried or be reconciled to their partner (1 Cor. 7:1-11). Experience marital unity and reject passion toward someone else causing divorce.

Pursue Marital Peace Knowing You Were Bought with Christ’s Blood
If a believer had an unbelieving spouse willing to stay married, do not divorce him or her. The unbelieving spouse was sanctified through the believing partner. The believing spouse was not bound if the unbelieving partner left because God called them to live in peace not knowing if the unbeliever would be saved. Remain in the situation of God's calling. A slave could gain freedom even though he or she would remain Christ's slave. You were bought with a price so do not become slaves of men (1 Cor. 7:12-24). Pursue marital peace knowing you were bought with Christ's blood.

Show Undivided Devotion to the Lord Regardless of Marital Status
Remain single or married because of the present crisis in the world. Those who get married face many troubles in this life. Live like being unmarried since the time is short. Be concerned only about pleasing the Lord. The married have divided interests in pleasing their spouse while the unmarried can have undivided devotion to the Lord. People have freedom to marry but those who had control over their own will did even better by not marrying. A person can marry another person in the Lord after their spouse died (1 Cor. 7:25-40).  Show undivided devotion to the Lord regardless of your marital status.

Here is a checklist of principles on how to stay devoted to Jesus whether you are married or unmarried:
1.  Confront sin in believers' lives with sincerity and truth

2. Disassociate with believers if they continue in sin, but let God judge unbelievers
3. Suffer unjustly to show the world your transformed life instead of going to court with unbelievers
4. Flee sexual immorality realizing your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit
5. Experience oneness in your marriage and reject passion toward someone else causing divorce
6. Pursue peace in your marriage realizing you were bought with Christ's shed blood
7. Show undivided devotion to the Lord regardless of your marital status

Characteristics of a Godly Wife (Insights in Psalms)

Too many women have too much leisure time for their own good. They have time for criticism, gossip, faultfinding, and complaining. They have time for idle games and lay too much attention to things of the flesh. There are other women who have too little time for the enduring things of life. They are too busy flitting about doing this and that. They have great activity and much doing, but they lack time for building Christian characters. Both kinds of women -- the too-idle and the too-busy need to take time for meditation and quiet repose in prayer to God. They need time to cultivate their souls that in turn they may cultivate their children's lives" (Billy Graham).
Proverbs 31 explains the characteristics of a godly wife in the home and community.

My son, do not spend your strength and vigor on women who ruin kings. If rulers drink wine and crave beer, they forget what the law says and deprive the oppressed of their rights. Speak up for those who are destitute, judge fairly and defend the rights of the poor and needy (Prov. 31:1-9). God-fearing leaders speak up and defend the rights of the poor and needy.

A wife of noble character is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her, lacking nothing of value. She brings him good everyday. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like merchant ships bringing her food from a distance. She gets up early and provides food for her family and servants (Prov. 31:10-15). Wives' good character save money on food and clothing as they prepare meals for their families.

She considers a field and buys it. She plants a vineyard out of her earnings. She works diligently on her tasks. She works late making sure her trading is profitable. She is generous and helps the needy. She clothes her household in scarlet so they are prepared in every season. She makes coverings for her bed and is clothed in fine linen and purple (Prov. 31:16-22). Wives' business sense and poise supply extra income for their families while helping the needy.

Her husband is respected in a city leadership position. She makes and sells linen garments while supplying sashes for merchants. She clothes herself with strength and dignity and can laugh about the future. She speaks with wisdom and provides faithful instruction. She watches and is never idle over the affairs of her household. Her children and husband praise and call her blessed (Prov. 31:23-28). Wives' creativity, strength, dignity, wisdom, instruction and diligence enhance their husbands' capabilities.

She surpasses all other women who do noble things. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised. Give her the reward she has earned and let her works bring praise among city leadership (Prov. 31:29-31). Wives who fear God and do not rely on charm and beauty will be praised by others.

As a wife or someone who will be married in the future, evaluate yourself on the following checklist:
1. Save money on food and clothing as you prepare meals for your family
2. Business sense and poise supply extra income for your family while helping the needy
3. Creativity, strength, dignity, wisdom, instruction and diligence enhance your husband's capabilities
4. Fear God and do not rely on charm and beauty to be praised by others

How to Protect the Institution of Marriage (Insights in Law)

Spiritually battle through prayer and  hearing God's word to do His will. Follow God and renew your thinking in Christ to prevent worldliness and idols.  Learn from the bad fruit of Israel's history when they did not follow the Lord. These spiritual disciplines equip you to do God's mission and discover your unique inheritance. Then you can exercise justice in the church and community to atone for bloodshed in the land, which will protect the institution of marriage.

Spiritually Battle
The Lord told Moses to take full vengeance on the Midianites using 1,000 men from each tribe along with Phinehas the priest who killed every male and five kings of Midian and Balaam.  Moses was angry they spared the women who followed Balaam as he caused them to sin against the Lord at Peor before the plague struck God’s people. He told them to kill every boy and women who had slept with a man along with purifying themselves, captives and clothes. Moses instructed them to count and divide the booty between the soldiers who fought the battle and the rest of the community. They levied a tax for the Lord from those who went out to battle, one in 500 persons and cattle as a half-share to give to Eleazar the priest as an offering to the Lord. They took one out of every 50 persons and cattle to give to the Levites who kept charge of the tabernacle. Moses and Eleazar took the gold articles to make atonement for themselves and brought it to the tent of meeting as a memorial for Israel before the Lord (Num. 31:1-54). All believers spiritually battle through prayer and hearing His word to do God's will.

Follow God
Reuben and Gad with large livestock herds asked Moses if they could possess Gilead on the east side of the Jordan. Moses asked why their brothers would go to war and be discouraged from crossing the Jordan into land the Lord gave them while they sat in Gilead. He accused them of following their fathers’ example of sinning in not following the Lord fully by taking the land and wandering 40 years in the wilderness. Reuben and Gad said they would build cities for their children and be armed and ready to cross the Jordan until Canaan was possessed. Moses said they would be free from obligation and gave Gad, Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh the land and cities of Sihon, king of the Amorites, kingdom of Og and king of Bashan. They drove out the Amorites who were in the land (Num. 32:1-42). Follow God fully to enable your family and congregation embrace His kingdom purpose.

Renew Thinking

Moses recorded the journeys of Israel coming out of Egypt by armies under his and Aaron’s leadership according to their starting places. Israel started out boldly and the Lord executed judgment on the Egyptian gods. After crossing the Jordan into Canaan, they drove out all the inhabitants of the land and destroyed the carved images and cast idols, and demolished all the high places to take possession and live in the land. They inherited it by lot according to their families with the larger ones getting more inheritance and smaller less. If they did not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those remaining became barbs in their eyes and thorns in their sides to give them trouble. Then God would do to Israel what He planned to do with them (Num. 33:1-56). Renew your thinking in Christ so you reject worldliness and  idols.

Do Mission

When they entered Canaan, the Lord through Moses gave specific boundaries for the land allotted to them as an inheritance. He assigned the land by lot as an inheritance to 9 ½ tribes because Reuben, Gad and half-tribe of Manasseh received theirs on the east side of the Jordan River. Eleazar the priest, Joshua and one leader from each tribe helped assign the land for an inheritance (Num. 34:1-29). Do God's mission and discover your unique inheritance.

Exercise Justice

Moses commanded Israel to give the Levites cities and pasture lands surrounding them to live in according to specific dimensions. Six cities of refuge (three on each side of the Jordan) were assigned so someone who killed a person accidentally could flee and 42 other towns were given to the Levites in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe. The cities of refuge would be places to protect someone accused of murder before he stood trial with the murderer put to death. The accused would stay in the city of refuge until the death of the high priest and then could return to his own property. Anyone killing a person would be put to death on the testimony of at least two witnesses. Bloodshed polluted the land and atonement could only be made for the land by shedding the blood of the one responsible. Do not defile the land where you live for God dwelled among the Israelites (Num. 35:1-34). Exercise justice in the church and community to atone for polluting the land with bloodshed.

Protect Marriage

The Lord commanded Moses to give land by lot to Israel as an inheritance and to give the inheritance of Zelophehad to his daughters. If they married sons from other tribes, their inheritance would be withdrawn and added to the inheritance of the tribe they married into. When the Year of Jubilee came, their inheritance would be added to the tribe into which they married and property taken from the tribal inheritance of their forefathers. They could marry anyone they pleased within the tribal clan of their father. No inheritance could be transferred from tribe to tribe, for every Israelite would keep the tribal land inherited from his forefathers. Zelophehad’s daughters married within the clans of the descendants of Manasseh and their inheritance remained in their father’s clan and tribe (Num. 36:1-13). Protect marriage as the basic building block for a stable society through laws, mentoring and economic incentives.

Ask God to accomplish the following in your life and city:
1. All believers engage in the spiritual battle
2. Follow God fully to enable your family and congregation to embrace His kingdom purpose
3. Renew your thinking in Christ so you reject worldliness and idols
4. Do God's mission and discover your unique inheritance
5. Exercise justice in the church and community to atone for polluting the land with bloodshed
6. Protect marriage as the basic building block for a stable society through laws, mentoring and economic incentives

Maintaining Purity in Marriage and Sex (Insights in Law)

Priscilla K. Coleman, Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Bowling Green University, controlled for demographic groups and prior history of mental health problems and found that women who had undergone an abortion had an 81 percent increased risk of mental health problems. Almost 10 percent of the incidence of mental health problems was attributable to abortion. The strongest correlation was to substance abuse and suicide - 110 percent more likely to abuse alcohol, 220 percent more likely to abuse marijuana and 155 percent more likely to commit suicide. In Lev. 20-21, we see the consequences when people stray from purity in marriage and sex.

Anyone who gave their offspring to Molech would be stoned to death since they defiled God’s sanctuary and profaned His holy name. By not putting the sinner to death, God would set His face against the person and family who failed to discipline them since they played the harlot after Molech. God would set His face against those who turned to mediums and spiritists to play the harlot. Consecrate and be holy for He is Lord; keep His statutes and practice them for He sanctified you (Lev. 20:1-8). Abortion and turning to the occult lead to separation from God and death.

If someone cursed their father or mother, committed immorality, adultery or homosexuality, he would be put to death and bloodguiltiness would be upon them (Lev. 20:9-16). Sexual sins lead to death, guilt and disgrace.

If a man uncovered a menstruous woman and exposed the flow of blood, both would be cut off from the people. Obey His statutes so the land would not spew you out. Don’t follow the customs of the nation that God would drive out before you since He abhorred these things. Possess the land flowing with milk and honey land that God gave since He separated you from the peoples. Make a distinction between the clean and unclean animal. Be holy and set apart from the peoples to be His possession. Medium or spiritists  would be put to death (Lev. 20:17-27). Following worldly customs in moral and sexual matters devastate a culture and prevent you from experiencing God’s favor in all areas of life.

No one should defile himself for a dead person except for his immediate family. Do not take a woman profaned by harlotry or divorcee to be profaned, but be holy to God. If a daughter of any priest profaned herself by harlotry, she profaned her father and would be burned with fire (Lev. 21:1-9). Keep marriage holy as God hates adultery and divorce.

A priest with anointing oil on his head would take a wife in her virginity. He would not take a widow, divorced woman or one profaned by harlotry so as to not profane his offspring for the Lord sanctified Him (Lev. 21:10-15). Since marriage is a picture of God's relationship with His bride, the church, He want you to marry a pure virgin.

No blind, lame, disfigured or injured man with physical defect could approach God to offer His offerings by fire or go into the veil (Lev. 21:16-24). Be holy, pure and without defect in approaching God through prayer.

If are not married, ask God to provide a marriage partner who is a virgin. If you are married, pray with your spouse and ask God to keep your marriage pure.

How To Find a Marriage Partner (insights in Law)

10/27/2010

Picture
Finding the right life partner in marriage involves both human and divine factors. On the divine side, I asked God to show me the right woman to be my wife after surrendering my right to a wife. On the human side, I joined a church and attended an after-church fellowship of young people where I met my future wife, Karen. If I hadn't prayed or decided to stay home, I wouldn't have met her. Understanding these principles are vital so you don't become a statistic where one out of two marriages end in divorce and the online dating industry is worth $4 billion worldwide. The following factors we observe in Gen. 24 alternate between divine and human as Abraham desired a wife for his son, Isaac.

Commitment to God's Plan
Abraham told his servant to find a wife for his son, Isaac, among his relatives and not from the Canaanites. When his servant expressed concern whether the woman would follow him, Abraham said, "Beware lest you take my son back there" (Gen. 24:1-6).  Cover all the bases to obtain God’s choice of a wife and don't settle for the world’s plan to be unequally yoked spiritually and emotionally.

Male Takes Initiative

Abraham demanded that his servant follow his directions completely on how to locate a wife for Isaac (Gen. 24:2b,9). Men take the initiative in finding a wife since the woman is the rib taken from him and God "brought her to the man" (Gen. 2:22).

Faith in Divine Oversight

Abraham believed God would send His angel to assure his servant would have successful journey in finding a wife for his son (Gen. 24:7b,40).  God fulfills His promises and sovereignly works to accomplish His will in choosing the right wife. He is more interested in your welfare, than you.

Preparation in Financial Matters

Abraham's servant took ten camels and material items on trip to city of Nahor. Lord greatly blessed Abraham with  flocks, herds, silver, gold and servants (position of honor). Servant gave precious things to Rebekah, her brother and mother (Gen. 24:10; 35-36,53).  A husband's sufficient financial preparation encourages his wife's family of a stable marriage for their daughter.

Prayer List of Character Qualities

The servant prayed for success and lovingkindness be shown toward Abraham in finding a wife for his son.  He was standing by the spring (fountain of water) where daughters of men of city were drawing water. He asked God to reveal the woman who said, “Please let down your jar so I may drink,” and who answered, “Drink, and I will water your camels also," to be the one whom God had appointed for Isaac. The one chosen, Rebekah, was very beautiful and a virgin. The servant glorified God by saying, “Blessed be Lord who has not forsaken His lovingkindness and truth as Lord has guided me" (Gen. 24:12-14,27). As you pray and search wisely, God will lead you to a godly, servant-hearted mate.

Be Available in Public
Isaac went out to meditate in the field at night, lifted up his eyes and saw the camels coming. Rebekah lifted up her eyes and saw Isaac. In answer to her question, the servant said Isaac was his master (Gen. 24:63-65). Be available to meet people in public and don't isolate yourself from potential mates.

How can you share these factors with someone in the dating phase? If you are already married, how can you apply these factors to make your marriage stronger?
