Spiritually battle through prayer and  hearing God's word to do His will. Follow God and renew your thinking in Christ to prevent worldliness and idols.  Learn from the bad fruit of Israel's history when they did not follow the Lord. These spiritual disciplines equip you to do God's mission and discover your unique inheritance. Then you can exercise justice in the church and community to atone for bloodshed in the land, which will protect the institution of marriage.

Spiritually Battle
The Lord told Moses to take full vengeance on the Midianites using 1,000 men from each tribe along with Phinehas the priest who killed every male and five kings of Midian and Balaam.  Moses was angry they spared the women who followed Balaam as he caused them to sin against the Lord at Peor before the plague struck God’s people. He told them to kill every boy and women who had slept with a man along with purifying themselves, captives and clothes. Moses instructed them to count and divide the booty between the soldiers who fought the battle and the rest of the community. They levied a tax for the Lord from those who went out to battle, one in 500 persons and cattle as a half-share to give to Eleazar the priest as an offering to the Lord. They took one out of every 50 persons and cattle to give to the Levites who kept charge of the tabernacle. Moses and Eleazar took the gold articles to make atonement for themselves and brought it to the tent of meeting as a memorial for Israel before the Lord (Num. 31:1-54). All believers spiritually battle through prayer and hearing His word to do God's will.

Follow God
Reuben and Gad with large livestock herds asked Moses if they could possess Gilead on the east side of the Jordan. Moses asked why their brothers would go to war and be discouraged from crossing the Jordan into land the Lord gave them while they sat in Gilead. He accused them of following their fathers’ example of sinning in not following the Lord fully by taking the land and wandering 40 years in the wilderness. Reuben and Gad said they would build cities for their children and be armed and ready to cross the Jordan until Canaan was possessed. Moses said they would be free from obligation and gave Gad, Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh the land and cities of Sihon, king of the Amorites, kingdom of Og and king of Bashan. They drove out the Amorites who were in the land (Num. 32:1-42). Follow God fully to enable your family and congregation embrace His kingdom purpose.

Renew Thinking

Moses recorded the journeys of Israel coming out of Egypt by armies under his and Aaron’s leadership according to their starting places. Israel started out boldly and the Lord executed judgment on the Egyptian gods. After crossing the Jordan into Canaan, they drove out all the inhabitants of the land and destroyed the carved images and cast idols, and demolished all the high places to take possession and live in the land. They inherited it by lot according to their families with the larger ones getting more inheritance and smaller less. If they did not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those remaining became barbs in their eyes and thorns in their sides to give them trouble. Then God would do to Israel what He planned to do with them (Num. 33:1-56). Renew your thinking in Christ so you reject worldliness and  idols.

Do Mission

When they entered Canaan, the Lord through Moses gave specific boundaries for the land allotted to them as an inheritance. He assigned the land by lot as an inheritance to 9 ½ tribes because Reuben, Gad and half-tribe of Manasseh received theirs on the east side of the Jordan River. Eleazar the priest, Joshua and one leader from each tribe helped assign the land for an inheritance (Num. 34:1-29). Do God's mission and discover your unique inheritance.

Exercise Justice

Moses commanded Israel to give the Levites cities and pasture lands surrounding them to live in according to specific dimensions. Six cities of refuge (three on each side of the Jordan) were assigned so someone who killed a person accidentally could flee and 42 other towns were given to the Levites in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe. The cities of refuge would be places to protect someone accused of murder before he stood trial with the murderer put to death. The accused would stay in the city of refuge until the death of the high priest and then could return to his own property. Anyone killing a person would be put to death on the testimony of at least two witnesses. Bloodshed polluted the land and atonement could only be made for the land by shedding the blood of the one responsible. Do not defile the land where you live for God dwelled among the Israelites (Num. 35:1-34). Exercise justice in the church and community to atone for polluting the land with bloodshed.

Protect Marriage

The Lord commanded Moses to give land by lot to Israel as an inheritance and to give the inheritance of Zelophehad to his daughters. If they married sons from other tribes, their inheritance would be withdrawn and added to the inheritance of the tribe they married into. When the Year of Jubilee came, their inheritance would be added to the tribe into which they married and property taken from the tribal inheritance of their forefathers. They could marry anyone they pleased within the tribal clan of their father. No inheritance could be transferred from tribe to tribe, for every Israelite would keep the tribal land inherited from his forefathers. Zelophehad’s daughters married within the clans of the descendants of Manasseh and their inheritance remained in their father’s clan and tribe (Num. 36:1-13). Protect marriage as the basic building block for a stable society through laws, mentoring and economic incentives.

Ask God to accomplish the following in your life and city:
1. All believers engage in the spiritual battle
2. Follow God fully to enable your family and congregation to embrace His kingdom purpose
3. Renew your thinking in Christ so you reject worldliness and idols
4. Do God's mission and discover your unique inheritance
5. Exercise justice in the church and community to atone for polluting the land with bloodshed
6. Protect marriage as the basic building block for a stable society through laws, mentoring and economic incentives

Risk Believing God (Insights in Law)

Maintaining the status quo and not believing God to defeat “giants” in the land lead to dying in the wilderness without experiencing His mission in the world. God chooses a particular mission for every believer in the world. He desires every person walk in that mission.  Fathers and leaders have responsibility to equip their physical and spiritual offspring so they can discover their mission in the world. Identifying the world’s lies and deceptions that compromise families is a vital first step. To experience God’s peace and well-being, spend sufficient time with God in vital spiritual disciplines. Numbers 25-30 provide a blueprint in believing God.

Motivation for Believing God
Israel indulged in sexual immorality with Moabite women and worshiped their gods including the Baal of Peor. The Lord told Moses to kill the leaders of the people in broad daylight to turn away God’s anger. Phinehas, son of Aaron, pierced an Israelite man and a Midianite woman through the body to stop the plague after 24,000 died while Moses and the congregation wept at the tent of meeting. The Lord told Moses that Phinehas' zealousness for God's honor turned away His wrath so He did not destroy Israel. He made God’s covenant of peace a lasting priesthood and atonement for the Israelites. The Lord said to kill the Midianites whose hostility and deception concerning Peor caused the plague (Num. 25:1-18). Zealousness for God’s glory motivates prayer to defeat the evil one’s lies and deceptions so you embrace the truth of God's word.

Environment for Believing God

God spoke to Moses and Eleazar to take a census of those 20 years and older in Israel by their fathers’ households who could go out to war. The earth swallowed up Dathan and Abiram and devoured 250 men by fire who followed Korah when they rebelled against Moses and Aaron as a warning.  The sons of families numbered according to the 12 tribes totaled 601,730. They divided the land as an inheritance in proportion to the number of names according to lot between the larger and smaller groups. Aaron’s sons died when they offered strange fire before the Lord. Only Joshua and Caleb survived in the wilderness (Num. 26:1-65). Obedient families create the environment for children to implement God's mission in the world.

Passion for Believing God
The daughters of Zelophehad stood before Moses, Eleazar and the leaders of Israel at the tent of meeting saying their father died for his own sin in the desert and was not among Korah’s followers who disobeyed the Lord. They asked why their father’s name was withdrawn because he had no son. After they asked for property among their father’s relatives, Moses brought the daughters’ case before God. The Lord told Moses that it was legal to give them property and turn their father’s inheritance over to them as his nearest relative (Num. 27:1-11). God exalts those who passionately seek Him in doing His mission.

Accountability for Believing God
The Lord said for Moses to go up the mountain and see the land He had given Israel since he would die like Aaron. The Lord reminded Moses that he rebelled against God by not treating Him  holy before Israel at the waters of Meribah in of Kadesh. Moses asked the Lord to appoint a man to lead Israel so they would not be like sheep without a shepherd. God instructed Moses to lay his hand on Joshua, commission and put some of his authority on him so the congregation would obey him. Joshua would stand before Eleazar who asked for the judgment of Urim before the Lord. At his command they would go out and come in (Num. 27:12-23). God appoints leaders who prayerfully lead the flock so every sheep has a shepherd.

Means for Believing God

The Lord through Moses commanded Israel to present two one-year-old male lambs without defect as a continual burnt offering daily in the morning and at twilight along with a grain offering mixed with oil. At the beginning of each month, present burnt and grain offering mixed with oil to the Lord. Present one male goat for a sin offering to make atonement. On the 14th day of the first mouth they observed the Lord’s Passover with unleavened bread eaten for seven days beginning the following day. On the first and seventh day, they did not work (Num. 28:1-31). God requires daily spiritual disciplines of surrender, confess sins, read His word  and prayer to live out His will.

Commitment for Believing God

In the seventh month of the first day, have a holy convocation to do no work. Offer burnt offerings as a pleasing  aroma to the Lord, grain offering mixed with oil and a sin offering to make atonement as an offering by fire to the Lord. On tenth day of the seventh month, have a holy convocation to humble yourselves and not do any work. Present a continual burnt, grain and sin offering. On the 15th day of the seventh month, have a holy convocation to do no work. Observe a feast to the Lord for seven days and present a continual burnt offering, grain offering mixed with oil and sin offering. On the eighth day, have a solemn assembly to do no work. Present these offerings to the Lord at the appointed times in the tabernacle where God reveals His will besides the vow, freewill, burnt, grain and peace offerings. Moses spoke to Israel what the Lord commanded (Num. 29:1-40). Spend sufficient time with the Lord daily so you discern His will and become a pleasing aroma to Him and others.

Integrity for Believing God
Moses told the heads of Israel's tribes to not break their word when they make a vow. A woman has a binding obligation when she makes a vow while living in her father's house. The Lord releases her from a vow when her father or husband nullifies the vow. If a husband nullifies them later after hearing about them, he is responsible for her guilt (Num. 30:1-16). Fulfill promises you make to God and others.

Ask for the power of the Holy Spirit as you risk believing God using the following blueprint:
1. Motivation: Zealousness for God’s glory motivates prayer to defeat the evil one’s lies and deceptions so you embrace the truth of God's word.
2. Environment: Obedient families create the environment for children to implement God's mission in the world.
3. Passion: God exalts those who passionately seek Him in doing His mission.
4. Accountability: God appoints leaders who prayerfully lead the flock so every sheep has a shepherd.
5. Means: God requires daily spiritual disciplines of surrender, confess sins, read His word  and prayer to live out His will.
6. Commitment: Spend sufficient time with the Lord daily so you discern His will and become a pleasing aroma to Him and others.
7. Integrity: Fulfill promises you make to God and others.

Adopting Biblical Values for Communication (Insights in Law)

8/7/2012

Picture
Because leaders of this world have particular agendas, people are offered payments or kickbacks to comply with them. God has a different plan for believers. Communication that adopts Biblical values furthers God’s purposes on earth.

When Balak, king of Moah, saw what Israel did to the Amorites, he feared them. Balak asked Balaam to curse Israel and hope Moab would overcome their power by defeating them. The elders of Moab and Midian brought fees for divination and repeated what Balak said to Balaam. God told Balaam not to curse Israel because they were blessed. When Balaam refused to see Balak, he sent leaders more distinguished than the former. Balaam said he could do nothing contrary to command of Lord. God said for him to go, but only to speak His word (Num. 22:1-20). Resist agenda of leaders that tempt you to disobey God.

God in His anger sent an angel of the Lord to block Balaam's path. Balaam beat his donkey to get her back on the road after she saw the angel. The donkey asked what she had done to be beaten three times. The Lord opened Balaam’s eyes and he saw the angel standing with a drawn sword in his hand. The angel asked why he struck the donkey three times. The angel opposed Balaam because of his recklessness. The angel said Balaam would have been killed if the donkey had not turned from the path. He was told to go with the men, but speak only what the angel would tell him. Balaam said to Balak, “Am I able to speak anything at all? The word that God puts in my mouth, that I shall speak.” (Num. 22:21-41). Trust God's creative ways to protect you from dishonoring Him.

Balaam told Balak to build seven altars and prepare seven bulls and seven rams. When Balaam offered up the sacrifices, the Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth to return to Balak where he would instructed what to say. Balaam  said he would not curse whom God had not cursed. His blessing of Moab’s enemies upset Balak. Balaam said he must be careful to speak what God put in his mouth (Num. 23:1-12). Speak what God desires instead of manipulating Him to do what you want.

Balaam said, “God is not a man that He should lie, nor a son of man that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do it and has He spoken and will He not make it good?” Balaam received a command to bless with no omen or any divination against Israel. Balak took Balaam to another place to see if he would curse Moab’s enemies from there (Num. 23:13-30). Apply truthfulness and integrity regardless of whether it benefits you.

When Balaam saw it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he did not seek omens again but set his face toward the wilderness. He spoke an oracle of one who heard God's words and saw a vision of the Almighty. Water would flow from his buckets and seed would be by many waters. His king would be higher than Agag and his kingdom would be exalted. He would devour nations who were adversaries. Blessed is everyone who blesses you and cursed are those who curse you (Num. 24:1-9). Fear God and listen to His words so you defeat spiritual enemies and build God’s kingdom.

Balak’s anger burned against Balaam when he cursed his enemies but continued to bless Israel three times. Balak would have honored Balaam greatly, but the Lord held him back from honor. Balaam said that if he received a house full of silver and gold, he could not do anything contrary to the Lord's command, either good or bad. A star would come forth from Jacob and scepter would rise from Israel and crush Moab. Edom would be a possession. Jacob would have dominion and destroy Amalek. No one can live except God has ordained it (Num, 24:10-24). Be faithful as His spokesman before leaders of this world rather than seek wealth or honor for yourself.

Is your communication truthful?
Are you listening to God's words?
Have you refused wealth and honor for yourself?

Is your motive to defeat spiritual enemies and build God's kingdom?

Progression to Possess Your Community with God's Glory (Insights in Law)

The preceding chapters in Numbers 17-19 show the first step toward community transformation begins with yourself. Pray for more passionate love for Christ personally and among other believers in your community. Follow God's leading so you embrace His calling for your life. Give generously to your local church and kingdom projects. Spend regular time in confessing sin. Encourage others to walk in holiness.  Then you are in position to rely completely on His power and surrender every provision for God's use.  God sends the power of the Holy Spirit for deliverance and healing when you look to Him in faith. Finally you can  pray in the power of the Holy Spirit. Numbers 20-21 explain this progression to possess your community with God's glory.

When Miriam died there and no water was found for the congregation, they quarreled against Moses and Aaron asking why they had been brought into the wilderness to die. God's glory appeared to Moses and Aaron when they came to the doorway of tent of meeting and fell on their faces. God told Moses to take the rod and speak to the rock before their eyes so it would yield water. Moses said, “Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?” He struck the rock twice with his rod and water came forth abundantly. Because Moses did not believe and treat God as holy in the sight of Israel, he could not bring them into the land. God proved Himself holy among them (Num. 20:1-13). Leaders must treat God as holy before others in obedience knowing the end does not justify the means.

The king of Edom refused to let Israel could pass through his land from Kadesh along the king’s highway. The Lord said that Aaron could not enter the land because he rebelled against His command. After his garments were put on his son Eleazar, Aaron died on the mountain top (Num. 20:14-29). Rely completely on the power of God instead of unbelief or trusting self to prevent spiritual and physical death.

The Canaanite king of Arad fought against Israel and took some of them captive. Israel vowed that if God delivered them into their hand, they would totally destroy their cities. The Lord listened and delivered up the Canaanites so they could destroy them (Num. 21:1-3). God demands total surrender of every provision for His use.

When they set out to go around Edom, the people became impatient because of the journey. People complained against Moses about no food or water and loathing "this miserable food.” The Lord sent fiery serpents and many people died from the bites. When the people admitted their sin, Moses interceded and made a bronze serpent set on a standard so everyone who was bitten could look at it and live (Num. 21:4-9). God delivers and heals when you look to Him in faith.

Assemble the people so God could give them water. Israel sang a song that exalted a well that the leaders dug and established with staffs (Num. 21:10-20). God sends the power of the Holy Spirit to provide for you.

Israel asked Sihon, king of the Amorites, if they could pass through his land and remain on the king’s highway without drinking water from their wells. When Sihon refused, Israel defeated and took possession of the land from the Arnon to the Jabbok. Israel took and lived in all the Amorite cities in Heshbon, which was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who formerly devoured Ar of Moab. Moses spied out Jazer and dispossessed the Amorites living there. The Lord said to Moses not to fear the king of Bashan. God would give him into his hand and possess their land (Num. 21:21-35). Use spiritual weapons of prayer to possess your community with God’s glory instead of relying on the world’s resources.

Ask God to lead you through the progression to possess your  community with God's glory:
1. Leaders must treat God as holy before others in obedience knowing the end does not justify the means
2. Rely completely on the power of God instead of unbelief or trusting self to prevent spiritual and physical death
3. God demands total surrender of every provision for His use

4. God delivers and heals when you look to Him in faith
5.  God sends the power of the Holy Spirit to provide for you
6. Use spiritual weapons of prayer to possess your community with God’s glory instead of relying on the world’s resources

What Passionate Love for Christ Produces (Insights in Law)

7/23/2012

Picture
I want passionate feelings to characterize my relationship with the Lord Jesus. Of course, I want to be perfectly obedient to the Lord, but I want the obedience to spring out of a passionate love for him. I want to obey Jesus not simply out of discipline of duty, or because of some reward or fear of punishment. I want to serve Him simply for the joy of being able to please the one I love so much. If discipline is what ultimately drives us in our pursuit of Jesus, eventually we will give up that pursuit. But a man in love, or a woman in love will never quit.... I want my life to be characterized by an unrestrained affection for the Son of God (Jack Deere).

In Numbers 17-19, as people respond in passionate love for God, they follow His leading into their callings, give generously and confess sin, which results in a transformed community as individuals walk in holiness.

God spoke to Moses to get a rod for each father’s household from all twelve leaders, wrote name on each rod and deposited them in the tent of meeting in front of testimony for Moses to meet with God.  The rod of man whom He chose would sprout to lessen from Himself the grumblings of Israel. The rod of Aaron from the house of Levi sprouted buds, produced blossoms and bore ripe almonds. Aaron’s rod before the testimony was kept as a sign against the rebels to put an end to grumblings against God so they would not die (Num. 17:1-13). God calls approved workers by showing signs of fruitfulness to end death and warn grumblers.

The tribe of Levi would be joined with Aaron to bear responsibility for the offenses against the sanctuary and the priesthood. If fellow Levites came near the furnishings of the sanctuary and altar, they would die and bring wrath on Israel. Aaron and his sons served in the priesthood for everything concerning the altar and inside the veil as a gift, but the stranger would die if he came near (Num. 18:1-7). God enables workers to follow His leadership into their unique callings so they do not experience His wrath.

The Lord spoke to Aaron saying He gave him a charge of His offerings as a portion and to his sons as a perpetual allotment as holy gifts, including the first fruits of oil, wine and grain given to the Lord. Every devoted thing in Israel, including the first-born of man or animal would be theirs. The tithe would be given to the Levites as an inheritance and compensation for serving at the tent of meeting. They gave a tithe of the tithe to Aaron the priest so they would not profane the sacred gifts of Israel and die (Num. 18:8-32). God gives people the opportunity to give financially to His work in response to His love for them.

The Lord said to Moses to bring an unblemished red heifer without defect and no yoke. It was brought to Eleazar the priest and slaughtered outside the camp. He took blood and sprinkled some of it toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times. The heifer would be burned in his sight, the priest washed his clothes, bathed his body in water and was unclean until evening. The cleansed man deposited the ashes outside the camp as purification from sin for Israel and the alien as a lasting ordinance (Num. 19:1-10). Spend regular time in confession of sin to remove spiritual impurity.

One who touched a corpse would be unclean for seven days. He purified himself from uncleanness with water on the third and seventh day to be clean. If he did not purify himself, he defiled the tabernacle of the Lord, cut off from the community and was unclean. A man ceremonially clean would take hyssop, dip in water and sprinkle the tent, furnishings and people who were there. Anything that an unclean person touched became unclean (Num. 19:11-22). The spiritual climate of a community changes for the good when God’s people live in holiness because of their passionate love for Him.

Ask God to move your community through the following progression beginning with yourself:
1. Pray for more passionate love for Christ personally and among other believers in your community
2. Follow God's leading so you embrace His calling for your life
3. Give generously to your local church and kingdom projects
4. Spend regular time in confessing sin
5. Encourage others to walk in holiness

Consequences of Rebelling Against Delegated Authority (Insights in Law)

7/8/2012

Picture
Vince Lombardi wrote, "Football is like life - it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority." Beware of the consequences of rebelling against delegated authority.

Korah, Dathan, Abriram and On with 250 renowned leaders assembled together against Moses and Aaron and said all the congregation were holy. They asked why Moses and Aaron exalted themselves above the assembly (Num. 16:1-3). Those who rebel against delegated authority exalt themselves.

When Moses heard these accusations, he fell on his face and said the Lord would bring the holy one near to Himself. Korah and his company would take censers, put fire in them and lay incense upon them in the presence of Lord. Moses told Korah that the Lord separated him to do service of the tabernacle and asked if he was also seeking the priesthood by grumbling against Aaron (Num. 16:4-11). Those who rebel against delegated authority are jealous of what God called others to do.

Dathan and Abiram said they would not assemble because Moses lord it over the nation. He did not bring them into a land flowing with milk and honey and did not give them an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Korah assembled the congregation against Moses and Aaron at the doorway of the tent of meeting and God’s glory appeared to all of them (Num. 16:12-19). Those who rebel against delegated authority have a false and negative view of reality.

The Lord said to separate themselves from the congregation that He may consume them instantly. Moses told the congregation to depart from the tents of the wicked men lest they be swept away in all their sin. If they died naturally, then the Lord did not send Moses to do these deeds. If the Lord opened the ground to swallow them alive into Sheol, it proved these men have spurned the Lord. The ground split open and the earth swallowed them and their households down alive to Sheol. Fire came forth from the Lord and consumed 250 men offering the incense (Num. 16:20-35). Those who rebel against delegated authority will be judged severely by God.

The censers were made into hammered sheets as a plating of the altar as a reminder that no layman who was not descendants of Aaron would come near to burn incense before Lord. This would prevent them from becoming like Korah and his company (Num. 16:36-40). Those who rebel against delegated authority create visual reminders to prevent others from following their example.

The congregation grumbled against Moses and Aaron saying they caused the death of the Lord’s people. Moses said to Aaron to take the censer, put in fire and make atonement for them because of God’s wrath in the plague. Aaron took his stand between dead and living so the plague was checked (Num.16:41-50). Those who rebel against delegated authority cast blame for the consequences they suffer.

Ask yourself the following questions:

1. Do you exalt yourself?
2. Are you jealous of what God calls others to do?
3. Do you have a false and negative view of reality?
4. Do you cast blame for the consequences you suffer?
God's wants to cover and forgive the sin of rebelling against delegated authority.

Cure for Grumbling, Unbelief, Self-Confidence and Sin (Insights in Law)

6/30/2012

Picture
Four great obstacles in your life is grumbling, unbelief, self-confidence and sin. Numbers 14-15 gives us cures for these four obstacles. The cure for grumbling is focusing on the possibilities that God provides. The cure for unbelief is fully following God. The cure for self-confidence is surrendering to God. The cure for sin is remembering our identity in Christ.

Grumbling
Because Israel wished they died in Egypt because of hardships, they grumbled against Moses and Aaron. They talked to each other about appointing a leader so they could return to Egypt (Num. 14:1-4). Hardships can cause grumbling as you remember "better" times.

Focus
In response to the grumbling, Moses and Aaron fell on their faces in the presence of the congregation. Joshua and Caleb tore their clothes saying the land they spied was an “exceedingly good land” flowing with milk and honey that God would give. By not rebelling against the Lord and not fearing the people of the land, their enemies would be devoured without His protection since the Lord was with Israel. When the congregation talked about stoning Moses and Aaron, God’s glory appeared in the tent of meeting (Num. 14:5-10). Focus on the possibilities He provides instead of being discouraged over obstacles.

Unbelief

Because of their unbelief, God smote them with pestilence and dispossessed them. Moses pleaded to God that He would pardon their iniquity and forgive according to the greatness of His lovingkindness (Num. 14:11-19). Unbelief causes plagues and destruction.

Follow

After the Lord pardoned them, He said that “all the earth will be filled with the glory of Lord.” He said these men put Him to the test ten times and since they did not listen to His voice, they would not see the land. Because Caleb followed God fully, he and his descendants would take possession of the land (Num. 14:20-25). Follow God fully to occupy your "promised land" so it's filled with His glory.

Self-Confidence

Those 20 years and older who grumbled against God except Joshua and Caleb would die in the wilderness. Their  children would enjoy the land, be shepherds for 40 years, but suffer for their fathers’ unfaithfulness. Those who brought the bad report after spying out the land died by a plague, but Joshua and Caleb lived. The people mourned, admitted their sin and were determined to go up to the place the Lord promised. Moses said they would be killed by their enemies because the Lord was not among them. The Amalekites and Canaanites defeated them when they went without the ark and without Moses (Num. 14:26-45). Grumbling, rebelling and presumptuous self-confidence remove God's protection causing defeat.

Surrender
When they entered the land God gave them, He commanded them to make a burnt or freewill offering in their appointed times along with a grain offering as a smoothing aroma to the Lord. There was one law and one ordinance for both the congregation and alien who sojourned with them. When they ate the food of the land, the Lord commanded an offering consisting of the first of their dough, cake or threshing floor to the Lord (Num. 15:1-21). Surrender yourself and give the first-fruits to Him w
hen God provides the "promised land."

Sin
When people unintentionally failed to observe these commandments without the knowledge of the congregation, they all would offer one bull for a burnt offering, grain offering and one male goat for a sin offering for both the native and alien. One who did anything defiantly would be cut off from the people because he despised and broke God’s word so that guilt would be upon him. Someone who broke the Sabbath by gathering wood was stoned to death by the congregation outside the camp (Num. 15:22-36). Intentional sin causes a broken relationship with God.

Remember

God commanded them to make tassels on the corners of their garments to remember all His commandments and not follow their heart and eyes to play the harlot so they could be holy to Him (Num. 15:37-41). Remember your identity in Christ with physical objects so you obey His commandments and not follow your heart or eyes in disobedience.

1. Focus on the possibilities that God provides instead of grumbling
2. Follow God fully instead of unbelief
3. Surrender to God instead of self-confidence
4. Remember your identity in Christ instead of sinning

Effective Leadership Combines Prayer With Wisdom (Insights in Law)

"Perhaps if there were more of that intense distress for souls that leads to tears, we should more frequently see the results we desire. Sometimes it may be that while we are complaining of the hardness of the hearts of those we are seeking to benefit, the hardness of our own hearts and our feeble apprehension of the solemn reality of eternal things may be the true cause of our want of success." (Hudson Taylor). Instead of complaining, pray! Effective leadership involves fervent prayer combined with practical wisdom as modeled in Num. 11-13.

Stop Complaining
When people complained of adversity in the hearing of the Lord, He kindled His anger and fire burned to consume some. People cried out to Moses who prayed and the fire died out. Foreigners had greedy desires and Israel wept, “Who will give us meat to eat?” They remembered the fish eatened free in Egypt along with cucumbers, melons, leeks, etc. They lost their appetite because they only looked at manna. People gathered, grind and beat the manna into mortar before boiling and making cakes with it. When dew fell on the camp at night, manna would fall with it. (Num. 11:1-9). God becomes angry when you complain about His provisions.

Ask God
The burden of the people was laid on Moses. He asked God to carry them in His bosom like a nurse carries a nursing infant. He did not know where to find meat for all the people. Moses asked God not to show his wretchedness if he found favor in His sight (Num. 11:10-15). Ask God to carry the burden so He can provide for those you are responsible.

Shared Leadership
The Lord said to gather 70 men from the elders of Israel who Moses knew so they could be brought to the tent of meeting with him. The Spirit would be placed on them to share the  burden of the people with Moses. Even though they were well-off in Egypt, they rejected the Lord, limited His power and unsure if His word would come true. Moses stationed elders around the tent and the Spirit was placed upon 70 of them, including Eldad and Medad who had not gone out to tent but prophesied also (Num. 11:16-30). God helps you carry the burden of responsibility through shared leadership who shepherd His people together.

Divine Provision

Wind from the Lord brought quail three feet deep. The Lord struck the people with a severe plague because they were greedy (Num. 11:31-35). God meets your needs supernaturally.

Humble Leadership

Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses questioning whether the Lord only spoke through him. Moses was more humble than any man on earth and faithful in God's household. Aaron acknowledged his sin and Miriam was shut up outside the camp for seven days (Num. 12:1-16). Top leaders must be very humble to face jealousy concerning their leadership.

Create Ownership

The Lord told Moses to send out leaders from each tribe to spy out Canaan. Moses sent spies from the wilderness of Paran at the Lord's command to Negev. The saw what the land was like, whether the people were strong or weak, few or many, good or bad land, open camps or fortifications in the cities, fat or lean land and whether trees grew in the land. They made an effort to get fruit of the land.  (Num. 13:1-22). Involving key leaders in understanding the mission field create ownership to build God’s kingdom.

Show Fruit

In the valley of Eshcol, they cut down branch of grapes, pomegranates and figs. They reported that the land certainly flowed with milk and honey and showed the fruit. People living in the land were strong with very large fortified cities, including the descendants of Anak. Amalek, Hittities, Jebusites, Amorites and Canaanites lived by the sea and by the Jordan. (Num. 13: 23-29). Showing fruit encourages people to sacrifice in building God's kingdom.

Communicate Victory
Caleb said they should take possession of the land as overcomers. Men accompanying Caleb said they were not able to go up against people stronger than them. As a result, they gave out a bad report of the spied-out land, which devoured its inhabitants. Comparing the large Nephilim made them look like grasshoppers in comparison (Num. 13:30-33). Communicating God's promises in spite of the odds encourages people to believe in His victory.

Here is a checklist for effective leaders in building God's kingdom:
1. Are you complaining about the problems? Don't!
2. Are you asking God to carry the burden?
3. Are you asking God for other leaders to share the burden with you?
4. Do you believe that God will provide supernaturally in answer to prayer?
5. Are you a humble leader?
6. Are you involving other leaders to understand the mission field so they gain ownership in the kingdom enterprise?
7. Are you showing leaders initial fruit in the ministry so they are encouraged to continue?
8. Are you communicating God's promises of victory in spite of the odds?

Prayerful Leaders Shape Discipleship to Change Lives (Insights in Law)

"We are too busy to pray, and so we are too busy to have power. We have a great deal of activity, but we accomplish little; many services but few conversions; much machinery but few results." (R.A. Torrey)  In Numbers 7-10, we learn that prayerful leaders shape discipleship to  change lives.

Moses set up, anointed and consecrated the tabernacle with all its furnishings, altar and utensils. The leaders of their fathers’ households  made an offering. They gave the Levites six covered carts and 12 oxen with a cart for every two leaders and an oxen for each one to Gershon and Merari. They did not give any to Kohath because they carried the holy objects on the shoulder. Each leader representing the twelve tribes offered fine flour mixed with oil for grain offering, incense, burnt offering, sin offering and peace offering, beginning with the tribe of Judah (Num. 7:1-83). If leaders dedicate their lives to God, then discipleship can extend to the whole body of Christ.

This was the dedication offering for the altar from Israel's leaders when it was anointed: twelve silver dishes, bowls and gold pans full of incense, all oxen for burnt offering, male lambs with their grain offering, male goats for sin offering and oxen for peace offerings (Num. 7:84-88). God reigns in leaders' hearts when they offer their time, talent and treasure to Him.

When Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with God, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat on the ark of testimony between two cherubim (Num. 7:89). Leaders hear God speak when they trust in Christ’s blood to forgive their sins and meditate on His word.

Seven lamps gave light in front of the lampstands, which were hammered works of gold according to the pattern the Lord showed Moses. Cleanse the Levites using a bull for a grain offering with fine flour mixed with oil and a second bull for a sin offering. Present the Levites before the tent of meeting and assemble the whole congregation. Levites laid hands on the bulls for a sin offering and burnt offering to make atonement for themselves. God took the Levites instead of every first-born to make atonement so no plague would come near the sanctuary. Moses, Aaron and all the congregation of Israel followed what God commanded Moses concerning the Levites. They purified themselves from sin, washed their clothes and Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord to qualify them to perform the service of the Lord (Num. 8:1-26). When the church confesses sins and dedicates itself to obey God’s word, it then becomes the light of the world.

The Lord told Moses to observe the Passover at the appointed time on the 14th day of the first month. Some unclean men because of a dead person could not observe the Passover so they came before Moses and Aaron. The Lord spoke to Moses after waiting to hear from Him. They should eat unleavened bread and bitter herbs while not leaving any until morning or breaking a bone. If a clean person did not observe the Passover, he would be cut off and bear his sin with one statute for the alien and native. A cloud covered the tabernacle continuously by day and fire by night. When the cloud was lifted from over the tent, Israel would set out. When the cloud settled down, Israel would camp and not set out. At the Lord's command, they camped and at His command, they set out to keep His charge (Num. 9:1-23). If the church listens to God's word by not moving ahead or behind the Lord's leading, it will know when and what to do.

When you go to war against the adversary who attacked you, sound an alarm, be remembered before the Lord and be saved from enemies. Gershon and Merari set out carrying the tabernacle after it was taken down. Kohathites carried holy objects. The Lord promised good concerning Israel. The father-in-law of Moses set out with him to the place the Lord would give them. The ark of the covenant journeyed in front of them for three days to seek out a resting place for them. The cloud of the Lord was over them by day. When the ark set out, Moses said, “Rise up, O Lord! And let Thine enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Thee flee before Thee" (Num. 10:1-36). The church gains victory over the world, flesh and devil by calling upon the Lord.

Is God reigning your life? Do you confess sin? Do you call upon God's name? Is prayer a major part of your life? Ask God to break your heart for a church and world that does not seek Him, and then pray as He leads you.

Gaining Internal and External Peace (Insights in Law)

Thomas Merton wrote, "Man is not at peace with his fellow man because he is not at peace with himself; he is not at peace with himself, because he is not at peace with God." Peace comes as men pray, live pure lives, help and encourage others,  confess and not hide from sin, bless and teach about God's protection and kindness.

Take a census of Kohath from Levi by families from 30 to 50 years old who served the tent of meeting and its most holy things. When the camp set out, Aaron and his sons took down the veil of screen and covered the ark of testimony and inserted poles, covered the bread of presence, lampstand for light, along with its lamps and utensils. The responsibility of Eleazar was an oil for light, fragrant incense, continual grain offering and anointing oil for all the tabernacle and its contents. Don’t let the Kohathities go in to see the holy objects lest they die. (Num. 4:1-20). Men transform families, churches and cities through prayer and living pure lives.

Take a census of the Gershonites by their families from 30 to 50 years old for carrying curtains of the tabernacle, tent of meeting’s covering and screen for its doorway,  hangings of the court and cords. Merarites were numbered by their families from 30 to 50 years old to serve the tent of meeting by carrying its boards of tabernacle, bars, pillars and sockets, pillars around court, sockets, pegs, cords and all their equipment assigned each man. Gershonites and Merarites  were under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. Moses, Aaron and leaders of congregation numbered Kohathites by families and fathers’ households as the Lord commanded (Num. 4:21-49). God assigns specific responsibilities to help and encourage each member of the body of Christ.

Send every leper away from the camp who had a discharge or unclean because of dead person so they would not defile it where God dwell in their midst. When man or woman committed any of sins of mankind by acting unfaithfully against the Lord, that person was guilty. He would confess his sins and made restitution in full for his wrong by adding one-fifth and giving it to him whom he wronged. If there was no relative to make restitution, then go to the Lord for the priest, besides offering a ram of atonement (Num. 5:1-10). Confess your sin and pay restitution for freedom from emotional turmoil since it defiles and spreads to others.

If any man’s wife hid her unfaithfulness from her husband and he became jealous, he would bring a grain offering of memorial as a reminder of iniquity. The hand of the priests became the water of bitterness to seek God’s judgment to make her stomach swell and thigh waste away if she was guilty. If she had not defiled herself, she would be free and bear children (Num. 5:11-31). Adultery causes jealousy and a physical curse when sin is hidden from a spouse.

When man or woman made a special vow of the Nazirite to dedicate himself to the Lord by abstaining from wine, strong drink and fresh or dried grapes while not cutting his hair going near a dead person. If he was near a dead person, the priest offered two turtledoves for a sin and burnt offering to make atonement to consecrate his head. He offered a one-year-old male lamb for guilt offering and ram for a peace offering. He offered unleavened cakes of fine flour mixed with oil along with grain offering with the priest presenting it before the Lord. The Nazirite took the dedicated hair of his head and put it on the fire under the peace offerings. The Lord bless you, keep you, make His face shine on you, be gracious to you, lift up His countenance on you and give you peace so they could invoke His name on the sons of Israel (Num. 6:1-27). Bless and teach people about God's protection, kindness and peace internally and externally.

Consider the following steps toward peace:
1. Pray
2. Live in purity
3. Help and encourage others
4. Confess and not hide from sin
5. Bless and teach about God's protection and kindness
