A Decision to Enter the Narrow Way Versus Broad Way

1/4/2020

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way if easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Matthew 7:13-14).

The ways of the world consist of human effort leading to the broad road of destruction. God's kingdom consists of obedience leading to narrow road of life. The currency of the world is money, but for God's kingdom, it’s obedience to God.

I faced a decision to enter the narrow way versus the broad way. In my early 30s, I taught a noon-time Bible study. My boss said, “One of your friends invited me to your Bible study. I don’t want you teaching it.”

Later, my boss made me responsible for sealed bids on electronic components. “What is the lowest price you have for this contract?” my boss asked, “I want my friend to know so he can beat that price.”

“That’s unethical!” I said. Later, my boss fired me because I wouldn’t compromise my integrity.

1. Seek the lost
Zaccheus, a rich chief tax-gatherer who was small in stature, climbed in a sycamore tree to see Jesus in a crowd. He looked up and told Zaccheus to come down, as He must stay in his house. People grumbled that a sinner entertained Jesus. Zaccheus said he would give half of his possessions to the poor and give back four times as much to those he defrauded. Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:1-10). Seek the lost by being open to opportunities.

I needed to wait on God’s timing for job and career changes. I learned that it’s better to train others than do all the work myself. People need follow-up to fulfill their commitments.  Submission to authorities opens ministry opportunities and God’s blessings. Material things don’t matter since everything belongs to God.

2. Steward God’s resources
Jesus told a parable about a nobleman who gave ten minas to his ten slaves so they could do business until he returned. After the nobleman returned, he called his slaves to learn what business they did. The first said his ten minas made ten minas more. The nobleman (master) commended the slave over his faithfulness and gave him authority over ten cities. The second slave made five minas and given authority over five cities. The third hid his mina in a handkerchief and buried it in the ground because he was afraid. The master said to take away the mina and give it to the one with ten minas and collect from a bank (Luke 19:11-27). Steward God’s resources (money, time, spiritual gifts, and bodies) for greater authority and responsibility.

After leaving Cedar Rapids, Iowa, I took a job as an Industrial Engineering consultant in Omaha, Nebraska. When business slowed, I was laid off. An elder at our church told me, “Mark, there’s a guy in Lincoln, Nebraska, that you might want to meet as a potential ministry partner. His name is Dean Hatfield.” Two ladies in the church nursery told Karen, “Dean Hatfield led our husbands to Christ while students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Mark should meet him.” God spoke through circumstances and people to maximize my gifts.

3. Listen to God
Jesus told two disciples to bring an unused colt, simply saying “The Lord has need of it,” if asked for an explanation. With Jesus on the colt, a multitude of disciples praised God saying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" When the Pharisees said He should rebuke His disciples, Jesus responded, "if these become silent, the stones will cry out!" (Luke 19:28-40).  Listen to God so Christ can enter your city and your circumstances.

These early years of my career taught me to pray and rely on Christ as Lord of my life. In 1986, we moved to Lincoln with my family to partner with Dean, becoming a college missionary. In 1989, I witnessed first-hand the Biblical illiteracy and confusion that arose after the tele-evangelist scandals. College students were asking me in the dorms, “Why are there so many denominations? Why are people trying to get rich through religion?”

4. Share Jesus’ concerns
Jesus wept over Jerusalem because they rejected the peace He offered. He was hidden from their eyes. In the future, enemies would destroy their families because they didn't recognize His coming. (Luke 19:41-44).
Share Jesus’ concerns for His presence and peace.

In prayer, God said I needed to do something about Biblical illiteracy. A journalism student said, “Mark, take these two journalism courses to help in your ministry.” My wife met the wife of the Dean of the Journalism College in Bible Study Fellowship. The dean, who became a mentor, recommended I pursue a Master’s in Journalism to develop my writing skills for ministry (God may lead you to further training). Over the next 33 years, we experienced God’s provision and faithfulness in answer to prayer.

5. Pursue prayer over riches
Jesus entered the temple and cast out those who were selling, saying His house shall be a house of prayer, but they made it a robbers' den
(Luke 19:45-46). Pursue prayer over riches.

In 1998, a friend invited me to attend a four-day prayer summit in Seattle to build biblical unity within the city. I desired similar interdenominational prayer in Lincoln. God opened the door in 2004 to initiate weekly pastor’s prayer groups in Lincoln along with a yearly prayer summit that still occurs. During these years, I learned that regular prayer and study of God’s Word with others pays dividends and opens doors.

6. Feast daily on God’s word
Jesus taught daily in the temple, but religious and influential men tried to destroy Him. In contrast, all the people were hanging upon His words. As part of the body of Christ we need one another for accountability
(Luke 19:47-48).  Feast daily on God’s word with others.

For further thought: Thank God for how He is writing your life story. Thank Him for making you alert to opportunities to show His love and tell His message. Ask Him for a friend or friends to meet regularly for prayer and fellowship.

Spiritual Benefits of Mentoring (Insights in Prophets)

Mentors have the ability to transform individuals and even a city. Here are studies that have been done concerning the benefits of mentoring:

•      75% of executives point to mentoring as playing a key role in their careers (Jeff Barbarian, “The Road Best Traveled,” Training, May 2002).

•      The more mentors a woman had, the faster she moved up the corporate ladder (“Catalyst Finds Women Of Color Are Taking Charge Of Their Careers and Moving Up the Corporate Ladder” Catalyst Press Release, July 16, 2002).

•      Managerial productivity increased by 88% when mentoring was involved, versus only a 24%
increase with training alone (Barbarian, 2002).

•      95% of mentoring participants said the experience motivated them to do their very best (Ed Michaels, Helen Handfield-Jones, and Beth Axelrod, The War for Talent, Harvard Business School Press, 2001).

•      Professionals who have had mentors earn between $5,610 and $22,450 more annually than those
who have not (Kathryn Tyler, “Mentoring Programs Link Employees and Experienced Execs,” HR Magazine, Apr, 98).

Elijah illustrates the positive spiritual benefits of mentoring in his relationship with Elisha in 2 Kings 1-2.

When Ahaziah, king of Israel, sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to learn whether he would recover from sickness. Elijah asked if the king's messengers inquired of Baal-zebub because there was no god in Israel, saying the king would not recover. The king sent two captains with fifty men each and asked Elijah to come down. Twice Elijah asked fire to come down from heaven to consume the captains and their fifty men. The captain of the third fifty begged him to save their lives. The angel of the Lord told Elijah to go down and not be afraid. He told the captain that because the king inquired of Baal-zebub and not God, he would die, which he did (2 Kings 1:1-18). God causes death when you trust in false god or idols.

When the Lord was about to take Elijah by a whirlwind to heaven, Elisha went with him to Bethel. Twice Elisha said he would not leave Elijah. The sons of the prophets at Bethel and Jericho both asked Elisha if he knew that the Lord was taking away his master. When Elijah told Elisha to stay, he said he would not leave (2 Kings 2:1-6). God causes life and increased opportunities for ministry when you develop a close relationship with a mentor.

Elijah folded his mantle and struck the waters to divide it so the two of them crossed over on dry land. Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah's spirit. As they were talking, there appeared a chariot of fire and Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven. Elisha took Elijah's mantle, stood by the bank of the Jordan and struck the waters saying, "Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?" The waters divided and Elisha crossed over (2 Kings 2:7-14). God increases your spiritual appetite when you follow the example of a mentor in seeking God.

The sons of the prophets in Jericho said that the spirit of Elijah rested on Elisha. Fifty men searched for Elijah for three days and did not find him (2 Kings 2:15-18). God transforms your heart through a godly mentor.

The men of the city told Elisha that the water was bad and the land unfruitful. He told them to bring a new jar and put salt in it. Elisha threw salt in the spring of water and the Lord said He purified the waters so no death or unfruitfulness would occur to this day (2 Kings. 2:19-22). God transforms physical and social aspects of your city because of mentoring relationships.

When young lads from Bethel mocked Elisha saying, "Go up, you baldhead," he cursed them in the name of the Lord. Then two female bears tore up 42 lads before he returned to Samaria (2 Kings 2:23-25). God protects you from persecution and mocking in the fulfillment of your mission.

Consider the following checklist do determine if you are experiencing the benefits of mentoring:
1. Are you trusting in the true God instead of false gods or idols?
2. Are you developing a close relationship with a mentor to experience life and increased opportunities for ministry?
3. Are you following the example of your mentor in seeking God to increase your spiritual appetite?
4. Is God transforming your heart through your mentor?
5. Is God transforming physical and social aspects of your city because of your mentoring relationship?
6. Are you seeing divine protection from persecution?
Answering yes to these questions shows you are benefiting from mentoring relationships.

How Not to Waste Your Life (Insights in Psalms)

7/17/2011

Many people waste their life on earth. They don't make the most of their time. John Piper wrote, "Fight for us, O God, that we not drift numb and blind and foolish into vain and empty excitements. Life is too short, too precious, too painful to waste on worldly bubbles that burst. Heaven is too great, hell is too horrible, eternity is too long that we should putter around on the porch of eternity." Psalm 90 brings these truths to the forefront on how not to waste your life.

God has been our dwelling place in all generations. He has existed forever. Man's life is short since a 1000 years is like yesterday when it passes by or like grass that sprouts anew and fades in the evening (Ps. 90:1-6). Life is short and God is eternal.

God places our iniquities and secret sins in the light of His presence. Our days last 70 years and up to 80 years due to strength. They are filled with pride, labor and sorrow. It will soon be gone.  Teach us to number our days so we may gain a heart a wisdom (Ps. 90:7-12). Wisdom buys up opportunities on earth so you don't waste your life.

Ask God to satisfy us in the morning with His lovingkindness so we can be joyful in the midst of evil. Give permanence to our work as we see His blessing and favor (Ps. 90:13-17). Participate with God in His work so you have the satisfaction of eternal impact.

Each morning before you begin your day, go through the following process:
1. Praise God for His love to you
2. Ask God for wisdom on how you should spend your time
3. Where do you see God at work?
4. Write down on a do-list how you can join God in His work
5. Prioritize by doing the most important item(s) first
6. Move uncompleted items to the top of next day's list and begin this process again

How to Maximize Business and Service Opportunities (Insights in Law)

3/25/2011

With budget cuts, how will peoples' needs be met? The days of relying on the government are gone. The church will need to step up. Incentives in promoting personal responsibility along with private and public partnerships must be forged so people can live successfully, with dignity and fulfillment. How can we maximize business and service opportunities? Let's follow Joseph's wisdom in learning these lessons.

Joseph told Pharaoh that his father and brothers had arrived in Goshen from Canaan. Pharaoh asked five of Joseph’s brothers their occupation. They answered that they were shepherds and wanted to live in Goshen. Pharaoh asked if they knew any capable men who could be in charge of his livestock. Joseph presented his brothers and Jacob to Pharaoh. Jacob told Pharaoh his life had been unpleasant and hadn’t attained the years of his fathers. Pharaoh ordered Jacob and his sons to take possession of Egypt’s best in the land of Rameses.  Joseph provided his father, brothers and household with food according to their little ones (Gen. 47:1-12). Create financial partnerships between the church, government and other sectors to further the goals of each.

Egypt and Canaan languished because of famine. Joseph presented money to Pharaoh from all the grain purchased by Egyptian and Canaanite citizens. Egyptians begged Joseph asking for food after they spent all their money. He exchanged their livestock for food. After their livestock was exhausted, they offered their land to be purchased so they could be slaves to Pharaoh. They also requested seed so they could live and the land not be desolate (Gen. 47:13-19). Government and other entities can provide incentives to reward diligence so people can lead productive and healthy lives.

Joseph purchased all of Egypt’s land so it became Pharaoh’s. Everyone moved to the cities except the priests who lived on an allotment of land. After buying their land, Joseph gave seed so people could sow and harvest the land. They gave 20% to Pharaoh and kept 80% as seed and for food to sustain their families. The people credited Joseph for saving their lives and were willing to be Pharaoh’s slaves. Joseph made a statute that Pharaoh should have 20% and priests maintain ownership of their land (Gen. 47:20-26).  Seed money enables people to start businesses, which boost self-esteem and the economy.

Israel acquired property in Goshen and were fruitful. After Jacob asked that Joseph bury him in Canaan where his father was buried, Israel bowed in worship (Gen. 47:27-31). Never forget God’s promises and your eternal hope in heaven as you meet temporal needs.

Consider these questions:
1. In your work or ministry, how can you partner with others to fulfill the goals of each in time, talent and treasure?

2. How can you offer incentives so people take responsibility for their lives?
3. How can you use investment dollars to help businesses and ministries maximize their impact?
4. What can you do to increase your spiritual disciplines so God is the one who is glorified?

Making the Most of Every Opportunity (Insights in NT)

An example of being a fisher of men are four men who took a paralytic (representing an unbeliever dead in sin), removed all obstacles (removed roof above them, dug an opening (found common ground through relationships) and let down the pallet on which paralytic was lying (customize presentation for the situation). Jesus honored their faith by saying his sins were forgiven (Mark 2:1-5).

The paralytic ability to walk represents a transformed life:  from dead in transgressions to alive with Christ in resurrection power. The doubting scribes responded, "We have never seen anything like this." The former paralytic who became a new man in Christ was teaching all the multitude as they were coming to him (Mark 2:6-13).

Some people like the paralytic have obvious needs like those in poverty. Others like Levi, the tax-gatherer, have a stable occupation, but everyone needs Christ. Unfortunately, when one becomes a Christian, he or she often loses all contact with unbelievers. Jesus and His disciples were different. They ate with tax-gatherers and sinners while developing relationships with those despised by society. His mission and by extension, your mission, is to heal the sick through the power of Christ (Mark 2:14-17).

Peoples' needs vary in every situation and era. One must adapt their methods to contain (fresh wineskins) the gospel (new wine) so it ministers to the need (not burst the old wineskins). Jesus applied this advice in eating with sinners instead of fasting along with healing on the Sabbath. The latter came into being to benefit and heal humankind, not following legalistic Sabbath rules (Mark 2:18-28).

Paul's advice in Col. 4:2-6 (Message Translation) summarizes the principles taught in this passage:
Pray diligently. Stay alert, with your eyes wide open in gratitude.
Don't forget to pray for us, that God will open doors for telling the
mystery of Christ, even while I'm locked up in this jail. Pray that
every time I open my mouth I'll be able to make Christ plain as
day to them. Use your heads as you live and work among
outsiders. Don't miss a trick. Make the most of every opportunity.
Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in
others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out.

Here are the key points for application:
1. Stay alert to present realities as you pray for wisdom
2. Get outside the box (your personal "jail") in your thinking
3. Consider this question: What makes Christ most plain and understandable to your target audience?
4. Do research to determine the most effective method of ministry so you don't miss a trick
5. Execute your strategy learned from research to make the most of every opportunity
6. Gather continual input to adjust your strategy on the fly so it brings out the best in your target audience

Ask God how He wants you to apply these six points to your ministry situation.
