Biblical Convictions Derived from Discipleship

“I want freedom to do what I want! No one is going to tell me what to do,” Kerry said.

“What will your life be like if you follow that philosophy, Kerry?” Samuel said.

“If I make lots of money,” Kerry said, “I can help more people and not be under stress trying to make ends meet.”

“It makes sense for this life, but what about for eternity?” Samuel said, “Have you considered the eternal consequences of not centering your life around Christ?”

Most Christians live for this world, not for Christ. Because their lives aren't distinct from others, people avoid the church and Christianity. Luke 12 explains the Biblical convictions derived from discipleship.

1. Be authentic and transparent
Beware of hypocrisy because every secret will be revealed. Don't fear people, but fear the One with authority to cast you into hell. Because God loves you, confess Him before men so He can confess you before angels. Rejecting the Holy Spirit has an eternal impact determining heaven or hell. God will teach you what to say when sharing the gospel (Luke 12:1-12). Be authentic and transparent in leading people to Christ.

2. Lay up treasure in heaven
Be on guard against every form of greed because life doesn’t consist of possessions. Laying up goods on earth for comfort and pleasure is short-sighted because everyone gives an account to God. It's foolish to lay up treasure for yourself and not be rich toward God. (Luke 12:13-21). Lay up treasure in heaven by refusing materialism and greed.

3. Seek God’s kingdom first
Don't be anxious as God provides for birds who neither sow nor reap. Have faith in God and don't worry about food, clothing, and shelter because He knows you need these things. Seek first His kingdom and these things will be provided.  Don't be afraid because your Father has gladly given you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to those with real needs so you lay up treasure in heaven (Luke 12:22-34). Seek God's kingdom first by being generous and trusting Him to provide.

4. Live for Christ’s Second Coming
Be ready and alert for Christ's second coming to welcome Him with open arms. The head of the house will prepare and protect himself from thieves breaking into his house. The Son of Man is coming at an hour you don't expect (Luke 12:35-40). Live for Christ’s Second Coming by spiritual preparation.

5. Become a faithful steward
The faithful steward in charge of God's possessions won’t beat his slaves because of his master's delay. The unfaithful steward beats his slaves and the master assigns him a place with unbelievers. A slave who knew the master's will but disobeyed will receive many lashes. The one who didn’t know but committed deeds worthy of flogging will receive few lashes (Luke 12:41-48). Become a faithful steward of time, talent and treasure obeying Christ.

 6. Suffer persecution
Christ was distressed until His baptism since He brought division, not peace, to families. Three members will be against two, two against three, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, etc. (Luke 12:49-53). Suffer persecution in your family by identifying with Christ.

7. Consider eternal consequences
Hypocrites analyze the weather but not this present time. They don't judge what’s right. If you have a dispute, it's better to settle than risk having the authorities throw you into prison until the penalty is paid in full (Luke 12:54-59). Consider eternal consequences of your actions with proper judgment.

Action Steps: Ask God to develop the following four Biblical convictions derived from discipleship:
1. Consider the eternal consequences of heaven and hell. Does that motivate you share Christ?
2. Be spiritually prepared for Christ's Second Coming.
3. Maximize your time, talent and treasure for God's purposes.
4. Suffer persecution within your family by identifying with Christ.

Why Can You Exalt God's Word in Worship (Insights in NT)

Picture
The reasons you can exalt God's word in worship are:
1. Response to martyrs' victory over the antichrist
2. Know God's judgment amplifies His grace in the heavenly temple
3. Know God's physical, ecological and celestial judgments often harden peoples' hearts
4. Clothe yourself with Jesus during natural disasters to prepare for Christ's second coming
5. Celebrate man's destruction of idolatrous, religious system
6. Celebrate God's destruction of materialistic and deceptive political and commercial system that killed believers
7. Praise God's reign and church's righteous acts as preparation for wedding feast of the Lamb
8. Praise God's word from Jesus' mouth will defeat Satan so God rules on earth

Exalt God's Word in Worship as Response to Martyrs' Victory
Seven angels completed God's wrath with seven last plagues. John saw what looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire that were those victorious over the beast, image and number of his name. They held harps and sang the song of Moses and the Lamb about the Lord God Almighty's and King of the ages' great and marvelous deeds along with His just and true ways. Everyone should fear and bring glory to Him for He alone was holy. All nations would come and worship for His righteous acts were revealed (Rev. 15:1-4). Exalt God's word in worshiping His works and ways as response to the martyrs' victory over the antichrist.

Know God's Judgment Amplifies His Glory in the Heavenly Temple
John saw the tabernacle of Testimony open in heaven. Seven angels with their seven plagues came out of the temple dressed in clean, shining linen and wore golden sashes around their chests. One of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls filled with God's wrath. The temple was filled with smoke from His glory and power. No one could enter the temple until the seven plagues were completed (Rev. 15:5-8). Know God's judgment amplifies His glory in the heavenly temple.

Know God's Physical, Ecological and Celestial Judgments Often Harden Peoples' Hearts
The seven angels poured out seven bowls of God's wrath on the earth. The first angel sent ugly and painful sores on those with the mark of the beast who worshiped his image. The second angel turned the sea into blood so every living died in it. The third angel made the rivers and springs of water become blood because the Holy One judged truthfully and justly those who shed the blood of saints and prophets. The fourth angel gave the sun power to sear people by intense heat so they cursed God refusing to repent. The fifth angel plunged the beast's throne and kingdom into darkness so men gnawed their tongues in agony and cursed God refusing to repent what they did (Rev. 16:1-11). Know God's physical, ecological and celestial judgments often harden peoples' hearts.

Clothe Yourself with Jesus During Natural Disasters to Prepare for Christ's Second Coming
The sixth angel dried up the Euphrates River to prepare the way for the Eastern kings. John saw three evil spirits like frogs coming out of the dragon's, beast's and false prophet's mouth. They gathered kings together for the final battle of Armageddon. God told His people to stay awake and clothed so they would not be naked and shamefully exposed when He came back like a thief. The seventh angel sent flashes of lightning and a severe earthquake unlike any previously. Jerusalem split into three parts and other cities collapsed. God remembered Babylon the Great and filled her with His wrath. Every island and mountain were not found. Huge, 100 pound hailstones fell upon men so they cursed God (Rev. 16:12-21). Clothe yourself with Jesus during natural disasters to prepare for Christ's second coming.

Prepare for Idolatrous, Religious System to Be Destroyed by Men
One of the seven angels showed the punishment of the great prostitute that kings and inhabitants committed and intoxicated with her adulteries. John saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast covered with blasphemous names, seven heads and ten horns. She was filled with abominable things and adulteries with "Mystery, Babylon the Great" written on her forehead. She was drunk with the blood of the saints and those bearing testimony to Jesus. The beast she rode came out of the Abyss to go to his destruction. The seven heads were seven hills on which the woman sat. Five kings fell, one was and the other had not yet come. The beast was the eighth king. The ten horns had not received a kingdom but the kings and beast received authority. They gave their power and authority to the beast. All of them warred against the Lamb and His faithful followers. The Lord of lords and King of kings  overcame the kings and the beast. The woman was the great city that ruled over the kings of the earth (Rev. 17:1-18). Celebrate man's destruction of idolatrous, religious system.

Prepare for Materialistic Commercial System To Be Destroyed by God
Another angel said Babylon the Great fell and became the home for demons. All nations, kings and merchants drank her adulteries and grew rich from her excessive luxuries. A heavenly voice commanded God's people to come out and not share in her sins or plagues. Her sins piled up to heaven and He remembered her crimes. He gave her as much torture and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. She boasted of being a queen and never mourning. In one day her plagues of death, mourning and famine overtook her. Kings and merchants mourned when they saw the smoke of her burning ruining her power, riches and splendor so no one bought her cargoes. God judged her for the way she treated believers, apostles and prophets. Her merchants were the world's great men. Babylon led astray every nation by her magic spell. In her was found the blood of prophets and those killed on earth (Rev. 18:1-24). Celebrate God's destruction of materialistic and deceptive political and commercial system that killed believers.

Praise God's Reign and Church's Righteous Acts to Prepare for Wedding Feast of Lamb
A great multitude shouted that salvation, glory and power belonged to God since His judgments were true and just. He condemned the great prostitute whose adulteries corrupted the earth and avenged the blood of His servants. The 24 elders and four living creatures fell down and worshiped God seated on the throne crying, "Amen, Hallelujah." A voice from the throne said for His servants to praise God. A great multitude shouted that the Lord God Almighty reigned, the Lamb's wedding had come and His bride made herself ready with clean linen representing the saints' righteous acts. The angel told John how blessed were those invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb. The testimony of Jesus was the spirit of prophecy (Rev. 19:1-10). Praise God's reign and church's righteous acts to prepare for wedding feast of the Lamb.

Praise God's Word from Jesus' Mouth to Defeat Satan So God Rules on Earth
A white horse whose rider called Faithful and True judged and made war. His eyes were like blazing fire, head with many crowns and a name written that only He knew. His robe was dipped in blood and His name was the Word of God. Heaven's armies dressed in white linen followed Him riding on white horses. A sharp sword came out of His mouth to strike down the nations and rule them with an iron scepter. On His robe was written, "King of kings and Lord of lords." An angel said to gather for the great supper of God to eat the flesh of kings, mighty men and all people. The beast and earthly kings made war against the rider on the horse and His army, but they captured the beast and false prophet. They were thrown alive in the fiery lake of burning sulfur and killed the rest with the sword that came out of the rider's mouth on the horse (Rev. 19:11-21). Praise God's word from Jesus' mouth to defeat satan so God rules on earth.

Exalt God's word in worship because of the martyrs' victory over the antichrist, which used His word from Jesus' mouth to defeat Satan so God rules on earth.

Praise God's reign and church's righteous acts as preparation for wedding feast of Lamb knowing His judgment amplifies His grace in the heavenly temple.

Celebrate God's destruction of idolatrous, materialistic and deceptive religious, political and commercial system by clothing yourself with Jesus in preparation for His second coming.

Proclaim God's Truth for Joyful Fellowship (Insights in NT)

5/28/2013

Picture
The results of proclaiming God's truth for joyful fellowship include:
1. Walk like Jesus by loving God and others
2. Grow spiritually with forgiven sins, overcome evil one and know God so you don't love the world
3. Listen to the Holy Spirit's teaching ministry and prevent being led astray by lies
4. Fix your hope on Christ's coming to be purified from sin
5. Share material possessions with the needy to show love
6. Receive answered prayer by obeying His commands and pleasing Him through the Holy Spirit

Proclaim God's Truth for Joyful Fellowship

They proclaimed the Word of life that was from the beginning. They testified what was heard, seen and touched concerning eternal life. They wanted  others have the joy of fellowship with them and their Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. They declared that God was light without darkness. People lied by claiming to have fellowship with Him and not living by the truth. By walking in the light of God, they had fellowship with one another. The blood of Jesus, His Son, purified them from every sin. They deceived themselves and the truth was not in them by claiming to be without sin. If they confessed their sins, He was faithful and just to forgive their sins and purify them from all unrighteousness. They made Him a liar and His word had no place in their lives by claiming they had not sinned (1 John 1:1-10). Proclaim His truth for joyful fellowship with God and others.

Walk Like Jesus By Loving God and Others
John wrote these things so they would not sin. Jesus, the Righteous One and atoning sacrifice for their sins, was their advocate to the Father if they sinned. They knew Him and His love was made complete in them by obeying His commands. Those who walked as Jesus did knew they were in Him. If they claimed to be in the light and hated their brother, they were in darkness. Those who loved their brother lived in the light and nothing made them stumble. By hating their brother, they walked in darkness and were blind (1 John 2:1-11). Walk like Jesus by obeying His commands to love God and others.

Grow Spiritually with Forgiven Sins, Overcome Evil One and Know God
John wrote to his children because their sins were forgiven because of His name. He wrote to fathers because they knew Him who was from the beginning. He wrote to young men because they overcame the evil one. He wrote to his children because they knew the Father. He wrote to fathers because they knew Him who was from the beginning. He wrote to young men because they were strong, word of God lived in them and they overcame the evil one. Those who loved the world or anything in it did not have Father's love in them. The lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and boasting of what he had or did came not from the Father, but the world. The world and its desires passed away, but those who did God's will lived forever (1 John 2:12-17). Grow spiritually with forgiven sins, overcome evil one and know God so you don't love the world.

Listen to Holy Spirit's Teaching Ministry to Prevent Being Led Astray
Knowing that many antichrists went out from the church proved they were not true believers. The anointing from the Holy One enabled them to know the truth. The liar denied the Father, Son and that Jesus was the Christ. They remained in the Son and Father by making sure they remained in what they heard from the beginning. He promised eternal life. The anointing received from Him taught them all things to prevent being led astray (1 John 2:18-27). Listen to the Holy Spirit's teaching ministry to prevent being led astray by lies.

Fix Hope on Christ's Coming for Purification from Sin
Continuing in Christ allowed them to be confident without shame at His coming. The Father lavished His love to be called children of God. The world did not know them because it did not know Him. In the future when Christ appeared again, they would be like Him because they saw Him as He was. Even this hope purified everyone. Those who sinned broke the law. Christ who was without sin appeared to take away sin. People who saw, knew or lived in Him did not continue sinning being righteous like Him. Sinful folks were of the devil since they sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared to destroy the devil's work. Someone's new nature could not sin being born of God. Children of the devil sinned being unrighteousness and not loving their brothers (1 John 2:28-3:10). Fix your hope on Christ's coming to be purified from sin.

Share Material Possessions with Needy to Show Love
Cain belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother because his actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. The world hated true believers. Loving their brothers proved they passed from death to life. Those who hated their brothers were murderers without eternal life in Him. Laying down one's life for his brother followed Jesus' example who laid down his life for them. They showed love by sharing material possessions with their needy brother. Love meant actions and truth, not words or tongue (1 John 3:11-20). Share material possessions with the needy to show love.

Receive Answered Prayer Through Obedience
Those confident before God received anything they asked from Him because they obeyed His commands and did what pleased Him. They knew He lived in them by the Spirit He gave (1 John 3:21-24). Receive answered prayer by obeying His commands and pleasing Him through the Holy Spirit.

Answer the following questions that are results of proclaiming God's truth for joyful fellowship:
1. Are you walking like Jesus by loving God and others?
2. Are you growing spiritually by having your sins forgiven, evil one overcome and God known so you don't love the world?
3. Are you listening to the Holy Spirit's teaching ministry to prevent being led astray by lies?
4. Are you fixing your hope on Christ's coming to be purified from sin?
5. Are you sharing material possessions with the needy to show love?
6. Are you receiving answered prayer by obeying His commands and pleasing Him through the Holy Spirit?

Serve Others by Seeking Their Spiritual Welfare (Insights in Prophets)

3/30/2013

"A servant's job is to do all he can to make life better for others - to free them to be everything they can be. A servant's first interest is not in himself but others. Servanthood is a loving choice we make to minister to others" (Gayle Erwin).

You serve others by seeking their spiritual welfare through preparing for Christ's coming, humbling yourself before God, warning people to turn away from sin, practicing God's word, ministering with compassion to the needy, providing accurate and clear biblical teaching, and rescuing people from slavery to sin and false teaching.

Prepare for Christ's Coming Again

Ezekiel said the day of the Lord was near as a time of doom for the nations. Egypt's wealth was carried away and her foundations torn down. Her allies like Cush, Put, Lydia, Arabia and Libya fell in battle, their proud strength failed and were frightened out of complacency. God dried up the streams of the Nile, sold the land to evil men, laid waste the land and destroyed the idols. The cities went into captivity and God broke Pharaoh's strength. He scattered Egypt among the nations after strengthening the king of Babylon (Ezek. 30:1-26). Prepare for Christ's coming again when He breaks pride and complacency.

Humble Yourself Before God
Ezekiel asked Pharaoh king of Egypt if Assyria could be compared with him in majesty like a cedar in Lebanon. Great nations lived in the shade of its beautiful branches. No tree in the garden of God matched its beauty. The most ruthless nation defeated Egypt because of their pride. God cast his net over Egypt who was like a lion among the nations. He filled the ravines with their flesh and brought darkness over the land. God troubled the hearts of many people when Babylon shattered Egypt's pride. He slew Assyria, Elam, Meshech, Tubal and Sidon with armies lying around graves (Ezek. 31:1-32:32). Humble yourself before God when he breaks your pride.

Warn People to Turn Away from Sin
Ezekiel told Israel to choose a watchman to warn the people when the sword came against the land. Blood was on the people if they refused the warning, but were saved by listening. If the watchman saw the sword coming and did not blow the trumpet as a warning causing someone to be killed because of sin, God held the watchman accountable for his blood. He made Ezekiel a watchman for Israel to hear God's word and give warning for Him. If he warned the wicked man to turn from his ways and refused, he would die but Ezekiel saved himself. Israel's sins weighed and wasted them away. God took no pleasure in the death of the wicked but wanted them to turn from their ways and live. The righteous man could not trust in his righteousness for salvation if he disobeyed. If a wicked man turned from his wickedness by giving back what he took in pledge for a loan, returned what stole and followed commands that gave life, he lived.  None of his sins were remembered against him. Do not say that God's way was unjust (Ezek. 33:1-20). Warn people so they turn away from sin and live without trusting in their righteousness.

Practice God's Word
God told Ezekiel that because the people of Jerusalem ate meat with blood in it and looked to their idols, should they possess the land like Abraham? They relied on their sword, did evil things and defiled their neighbor's wife. God made them die of a plague and the land became a desolate waste ending their proud strength. People did not practice God's word through Ezekiel. Their mouth expressed devotion but their hearts were greedy for unjust gain. When this came true, they would know a prophet was among them (Ezek. 33:21-33). Practice God's word without lip service and seeking unjust gain.

Minister with Compassion to the Needy
Ezekiel prophesied against Israel's shepherds who took care of themselves instead of the flock. They ate the curds, clothed themselves with wool and slaughtered choice animals, but did not care for the flock. They failed to strengthen the weak, heal the sick, bind up the injured, bring back the strays or search for the lost. The shepherd's harsh and brutal rule scattered the sheep over the whole earth without a true shepherd to search or look for them. The sheep became food for all the wild animals. God spoke against the shepherds, held them accountable and removed them from tending the flock so shepherds would no longer feed themselves. God Himself searched for His sheep, looked after them and rescued them from all places where they were scattered. He brought them into their own land to be fed in a rich pasture. God searched for the lost, brought back the strays, bound up the injured and strengthened the weak, but destroyed the sleek and strong. He shepherded the flock with justice (Ezek. 34:1-16). Strengthen the weak, heal the sick, bind up the injured, bring back the strays and search for the lost so God's sheep can feed in a rich pasture.

Provide Accurate and Spirit-Inspired Bible Teaching
God judged between one sheep and another and between rams and goats. Ezekiel said to not trample the good pasture and muddy the clear water with their feet. God's flock must not eat trampled pasture or drink muddied water. He judged between the fat and lean sheep. False shepherds drove the weak sheep away, but God saved His flock from plunder. He judged between one sheep and another. God placed one shepherd, His servant David, to tend them (Ezek. 34:17-24).
Provide accurate and Spirit-inspired Bible teaching so believers can grow spiritually.

Rescue People from Slavery to Sin and False Teaching
God made a covenant of peace with His sheep and rid the land of wild beasts. He sent showers of blessing so trees and ground yielded fruit and crops. The people felt secure. He broke the bars of their yoke and rescued them from slavery. Nations no longer plundered or wild animals devoured them. They lived in safety without fear. He provided a land renowned for crops so they would no longer be victims of famine or bore the scorn of nations. They would know that God was with them and Israel was His people as the sheep of His pasture (Ezek. 34:25-31). Rescue people from slavery to sin and false teaching to bear spiritual fruit and live in safety.

To break pride, self-righteousness, seeking unjust gain, selfishness, false teaching and slavery to sin so you can serve others by seeking their spiritual welfare, do the following:
1. Prepare for Christ's coming again
2. Humble yourself before God
3. Warn people to turn away from sin
4. Practice God's word
5. Minister with compassion to the needy
6. Provide accurate and Spirit-inspired Bible teaching
7. Rescue people from slavery to sin and false teaching

How to Free People From Satan's Snares (Insights in NT)

3/24/2013

Picture
In order to free those ensnared by Satan through selfishness, pleasure and religion,  handle God's word accurately,  be empowered by the Holy Spirit and strong teamwork, preach the word in evangelism without shame, and equip faithful men in God's word to do good works.

Be Empowered By the Holy Spirit
Paul, an apostle of Christ, wrote to Timothy, his dear son, thanking God for constantly remembering him in prayer, longing to see him and being filled with joy. Paul reminded Timothy to fan into flame his faith passed down from his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice as God's gift. He did not give anyone a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, love and self-discipline (2 Tim. 1:1-7). Be empowered by the Holy Spirit in power, love and self-discipline.

Be Unashamed as You Proclaim the Gospel
Be unashamed about the Lord and His messengers. Join in suffering for the gospel who saved and called everyone to a holy life by God's own purpose and grace through Jesus Christ. He destroyed death and brought life and immortality through the gospel. God appointed Paul a herald, apostle and teacher to suffer unashamedly. He knew God and convinced that He was able to guard what he entrusted to Him for that day. Paul commanded Timothy to guard the deposit of sound teaching he heard with faith and love in Christ including the help of the Holy Spirit. Everyone in the province of Asia deserted Paul, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. He asked the Lord to show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, He refreshed, helped and unashamed of Paul's chains (2 Tim. 1:8-18). Be unashamed as you proclaim the gospel and serve His messengers.

Entrust God's Word to Faithful Men
Paul commanded Timothy to be strong in grace and entrust God's deposit to faithful men who could teach others. By enduring hardship as a good soldier of Christ and not involving himself in civilian affairs, he would please His commanding officer. By competing as an athlete and  following the rules, he would receive the victor's crown. As a hardworking farmer, he would be the first to share in the crops. By reflecting on these things, the Lord provided insight (2 Tim. 2:1-7). Entrust God's word to faithful men who teach others as you endure hardship, follow rules and work hard.

Handle God's Word Accurately
Remember Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David, so people suffer and endure everything for the gospel enabling others to obtain salvation for eternal glory. Die to live and endure to reign. By disowning Him, you disown yourself. God remained faithful in the midst of faithlessness since He cannot disown Himself. Remind people of these things and warn against quarreling about words to prevent ruin. Present self as an approved workman without shame correctly handing the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter that spread like gangrene leading to further ungodliness, wandering and destroying faith.  Everyone who confessed the Lord's name must turn away from wickedness (2 Tim. 2:8-19). Handle God's word accurately to reign with Christ and people obtain salvation.

Teach Gently and Lead Those Ensnared By Satan
A large house contained articles for honorable and dishonorable purposes. Be cleansed from dishonorable ones to become a holy instrument useful to the Master and prepared for any good work. Flee youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Refuse foolish and stupid arguments that produced quarrels but be kind and able to teach gently so God granted repentance leading to the knowledge of truth. They came to their senses and escaped from the devil's trap who took them captive to do his will (2 Tim. 2:20-26). Teach gently and lead those ensnared by Satan toward repentance and the knowledge of the truth.

Avoid Selfish, Pleasure-Seeking and Religious Men
In the last days, have nothing to do with men who love  themselves, love money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of good, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God and had a form of godliness but denied its power. They wormed their ways into homes and gained control over weak-willed women loaded down with sins and evil desires. Having depraved minds, they always learn but never able to acknowledge the truth (2 Tim. 3:1-9). Avoid selfish, pleasure-seeking and religious men who do not acknowledge the truth.

Use Your Life and God's Word to Equip in Good Works
Timothy knew about Paul's teaching, way of life, purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecution and sufferings.  God rescued him from persecutions in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra. Everyone who wanted to live godly was persecuted. Continue learning and being convinced knowing those from whom you learned it. From infancy Timothy knew the holy Scriptures making him wise for salvation through faith in Christ. All Scriptures were inspired by God and profitable for teaching, reproof, correction and training in righteousness so the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:10-17). Use your life and God's word to equip people in every good work.

Preach the Word Longing for Christ's Second Coming
In the presence of God, preach the Word in every season. Correct, rebuke and encourage with patience and careful instruction. A time would come when men did not endure sound doctrine but gathered many teachers to say what their itching ears wanted to hear. They rejected truth and followed myths. Paul commanded Timothy to endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist and discharge all duties of his ministry. Paul's sacrificial service proved he fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith. In the future the righteous Judge awarded him and others the crown of righteousness if they longed for His coming (2 Tim. 4:1-8). Preach the word and do evangelism as you long for Christ's Second Coming.

Develop Strong Teamwork to Fully Proclaim the Gospel
Paul asked Timothy to come quickly because Demas loved this world and deserted him along with two others except Luke. He asked Timothy to bring his cloak, scrolls and Mark as he was helpful in ministry. Paul warned Timothy to be guard since Alexander the metalworker strongly opposed his message. At Paul's first defense, everyone deserted him. God strengthened Paul to fully proclaim His message so all Gentiles might hear it. The Lord would rescue him from evil attack to be brought safely to His heavenly kingdom. Paul asked Timothy to greet Priscilla, Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus. Erastus stayed in Corinth and left Trophimus sick in Miletus. He asked Timothy to come before winter. Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers greeted him (2 Tim. 4:9-22). Develop strong teamwork to fully proclaim the gospel in the midst of desertion and opposition.

In order to free people from the devil's snares, do the following:
1. Handle God's word accurately
2. Be empowered by the Holy Spirit and strong teamwork
3. Preach the word in evangelism without shame
4. Equip faithful men in God's word to do good works

How to Live in the Last Days (Insights in NT)

8/5/2011

Picture
With many media outlets today, all of us have a heightened awareness of natural disasters striking across the globe. It causes anxiety, uncertainty and grief, especially for people directly affected. Scripture predicts natural disasters on earth and signs in the heavens before Christ's Second Coming. How should you live in the last days?

While the rich put in gifts out of their surplus, a poor widow gave out of her poverty, all she had to live on (Lk. 21:1-4). Sacrificial giving supports others during the last days.

In the future, every stone will be torn down in the temple. When many come in Christ's name, don't go after them. Don't be terrified of wars and disturbances because the end will come later (Lk. 21:5-9). Discernment and calmness prevent deception by false teachers.

Nation will rise against nation along with great earthquakes, plagues, famines and great signs from heaven. Before these things, persecution will deliver you to synagogues and prisons and bring you before kings as an opportunity for your testimony. Christ will give you the words and wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to refute. Family members will hate and put some of you to death but not a hair of your head will perish. By endurance, you will gain your lives (Lk. 21:10-19). Share your testimony of Christ as a witness during times of persecution in the last days.

When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize her desolation is at hand. These are days of vengeance, great distress and wrath to fulfill what was written. They will be killed, led captive into all the nations and trampled underfoot by the Gentiles (Lk. 21:20-24). Wrath and judgment prepare God's people as predicted by Scripture before Christ's Second Coming.

Signs in the heavens and on earth will dismay nations. Men faint from fear for the powers of the heavens will be shaken until they "see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory." When these things take place, pay attention because your redemption is near (Lk. 21:25-28). Total deliverance from sin occurs at Christ's Second Coming.

These signs are like seeing the leaves of fig trees, showing fruit coming on, and  knowing the kingdom of God is near. Heaven and earth will pass away but God's word will not pass away (Lk. 21:29-33). Watch for the signs and rely on God's word in the last days.

Be alert at all times so you aren't weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and worries of life so final day doesn't come on you suddenly like a trap. Pray so you have strength to escape all things that will take place and stand before the Son of Man (Lk. 21:34-36). Pray for everything so you have strength to stand before Christ.

Jesus taught in the temple during the day and spent nights on the Mount of Olives. Everyone got up early to listen to Him in the temple (Lk. 21:37-38). Pray with endurance and prioritize listening attentively to God's word.

The following list explains how you should live in the last days:
1. Give sacrificially to support others
2. Discern false teachers and remain calm
3. Share your testimony of Christ during persecution
4. Endure God's judgment as preparation for Christ's Second Coming
5. Wait for total deliverance of sin at Christ's Second Coming
6. Watch for the signs and rely on God's word in the last days
7. Pray for everything so you have strength to stand before Christ
8. Pray with endurance and prioritize listening attentively to God's word

Biblical Convictions Derived from Discipleship (Insights in NT)

Christian pollster George Barna said, "Faith makes very little difference in their [Christians] lives: believers do not train their children to think or act differently [from the world]. It's no wonder that they [Christian children] grow up to be just as involved in gambling, excessive drinking, and any other unbiblical behavior as everyone else." Most Christians live for this world. Because their lives aren't distinct from others, people aren't interested in what the church or Christianity has to offer. Luke 12 explains Biblical convictions derived from discipleship.

Beware of hypocrisy because every secret will be revealed. Don't fear people, but fear the One who has authority to cast into hell. Because God loves you, confess Him before men so He can confess you before angels. Rejecting the Holy Spirit has an eternal impact determining whether one goes to heaven or hell. God will teach you what to say when you have opportunity to share the gospel (Lk. 12:1-12). Be guided by the Holy Spirit in authenticity and transparency as you lead people to faith in Christ.

Be on guard against every form of greed because life does not consist of possessions. Laying up goods on earth so you can be comfortable and happy is short-sighted because everyone must give an account to God. It's foolishness to lay up treasure for yourself and not be rich toward God (Lk. 12:13-21). Lay up treasure in heaven by refusing materialism and greed.

Don't be anxious as God provides for you like He does for the birds who neither sow nor reap. Have faith in God and don't worry about food, clothing and shelter because He knows you need these things. Seek first His kingdom and these things will be added to you. Don't be afraid because your Father has gladly given you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to those with real needs so you lay up treasure in heaven (Lk. 12:22-34). Seek God's kingdom first by being generous and trusting Him to provide.

Be ready and alert for Christ's second coming so you can welcome Him with open arms. The head of the house prepares and protects himself if he knew a thief was coming to break into his house. The Son of Man is coming at an hour you don't expect (Lk. 12:35-40). Be spiritually prepared and not complacent for Christ's Second Coming.

The faithful  steward in charge of God's possessions will not beat the slaves because of his master's delay. In contrast, the unfaithful steward beats the slaves and the master assigns him a place with unbelievers. A slave who knew the master's will but disobeyed shall receive many lashes. The one who did not know it but committed deeds worthy of flogging will receive few lashes (Lk. 12:41-48). Those who have received much, more will be required.

Christ is distressed until His baptism is accomplished since He brings division, not peace, to families. Three members will be against two, two against three, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, etc. (Lk. 12:49-53). Identifying with Christ brings persecution within families.

Hypocrites analyze the weather but not this present time. They don't judge what is right. If you have a dispute, it's better to settle than risk having the authorities throw you into prison until the  penalty is paid in full (Lk. 12:54-59). Consider the eternal outcomes of your actions so you judge correctly.

Here are Biblical convictions derived from discipleship. Use a chiastic structure beginning with the first paragraph: A, B, C, D, C', B' A'. We group together the content in A & A', B & B', etc.

1. Consider the eternal outcomes of heaven and hell as you are guided by the Holy Spirit to share your faith with others.
2. Identify with Christ instead of career even though you suffer persecution within your family.
3. Maximize your time, talent and treasure for God's purposes.
4. Be spiritually prepared for Christ's Second Coming.
Discipleship will develop the above four convictions in your life. Ask Him to develop them.

Are You Ready for Christ's Second Coming? (Insights in NT)

Reading the newspaper headlines about natural disasters, terrorist attacks and relational unrest throughout the world have tendency to create fear. Remember these are birth pangs for Christ's Second Coming. Instead of being anxious, prepare yourself spiritually by putting your hope in Christ, not in things of this world. Christ comforts and encourages, while the world overwhelms and discourages. Since the disciples faced an uncertain future as persecution increased around Christ and themselves, He gave them the big picture surrounding His Second Coming.

As Jesus was going out of the temple, He told the disciples that every stone would be torn down from it. They asked when these things would take place and the sign for their fulfillment (Mark 13:1-4).

Jesus said the beginning of birth pangs would see many deceivers coming in His name, hear of wars and rumors of war, nations and kingdoms rising against each other and earthquakes & famines occurring in various places (Mark 13:5-8). Intense spiritual deception, natural disasters and political chaos are signals to prepare for Christ's Second Coming.

He exhorted the disciples to be on guard since they will be hated and many put to death on account of Christ. The Holy Spirit will tell them what to say as a testimony, especially when suffering persecution from religious leaders, family members and civil leaders since the gospel must first be preached to all nations (Mark 13:9-13). Severe persecution accelerates the spread of the gospel into all nations.

When you see the Abomination of Desolation standing where it should not be, flee to the mountains for great tribulation is coming. False Christs and prophets will show signs and wonders to even lead believers astray (Mark 13:14-23). Trusting in Christ and His provision protects you from evil political and spiritual authorities.

After the tribulation and immediately before Christ comes back in the clouds with great glory, the sun and moon will be darkened, stars will fall from heaven and powers in the heaven will be shakened. At His coming, the angels will gather believers together from the earth. When you see these things occurring, know Christ is coming soon. No one knows the exact time except God the Father. Be on the alert for His sudden appearing since His words won't pass away (Mark 13:24-37). Be alert for natural signs and spiritually prepared in readiness for Christ's Second Coming.

Rate yourself on a scale (1 being lowest and 10 highest) concerning your alertness (opposite of apathy) on the following principles that were underlined above:

1. Intense spiritual deception, natural disasters and political chaos are signals to prepare for Christ's Second Coming.
2. Severe persecution accelerates the spread of the gospel into all nations.
3. Trusting in Christ and His provision protects you from evil political and spiritual authorities.
4. Be alert for natural signs and spiritually prepared in readiness for Christ's Second Coming (blog on Mark 12 explains how to be spiritually prepared)

Are You Ready? (insights in New Testament)

I remember the sinking feeling taking tests in schools when I hadn't studied sufficiently. Not being prepared gets us in trouble. Most experts agree the federal government wasn’t prepared to help the multitudes of hungry, thirsty and desperate victims of Hurricane Katrina. It scrimped on storm spending and shifted its attention from dealing with natural disasters to fighting terrorism. Many residents never received promised help. The FEMA Director had no disaster experience before being appointed to his job. Federal flood control spending was also decreased before Katrina. In 2004, the Army Corps of Engineers stopped major work on the now-breached levee system that had protected New Orleans from flooding. Will we be prepared for an even greater event, the Second Coming of Christ?

A time of national crises throughout the world including war, natural disasters and famine will occur during the time between Christ’s death and His Second Coming (Matt. 24:4-8)[i].

Perseverance will be at a premium because of persecution, apostasy, shallow faith, false prophets and coldness in one’s faith (Matt. 24:9-13).

The Gospel of the Kingdom will be widely preached throughout the world (Matt. 24:14).

Christ answered the disciples’ first question about signs for the temple’s destruction, which occurred in AD 70 (Matt. 24:15-20)[ii].

The time of more intense tribulation will occur immediately prior to Christ’s Second Coming (Matt. 24:21-28). Rev. 7:14 indicates a period of intensified horrors before the Second Coming [iii].

Christ will return after this ‘tribulation’ period as King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Matt. 24:30-31; Rev. 19:11-16)[iv].

Why are you unprepared for Christ’s coming?
It could be apathy, busyness, distraction, worldliness or deception.

Confess why you are unprepared for Christ's Second Coming. Meditate on 2 Tim. 4:8 that gives a reward for those who love Christ's coming.
