Trusting God during temptations, crisis and stress reap benefits. By committing to purity, you reap greater learning and competence in your work. By asking God for wisdom and communicating with humility during a crisis, you reap promotion, provision and influence. By refusing to worship idols and trusting God during stressful circumstances, you see unbelievers praise God.

Commit to Purity and Reap Greater Competence
King Nebuchadnezzar carried off articles from God's temple to the temple of his god in Babylon. He brought young Israelites without defect showing aptitude for every kind so they could learn the language and literature of the Babylonians and be qualified to serve the king's palace after three years. Daniel resolved not to defile himself with royal food and wine. God caused the official to show favor, but was afraid he would look worse than other young men his age. After a ten-day test of vegetables and water, Daniel looked healthier and better nourished than the others who ate the royal food. God gave Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning before entering the king's service. The king found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in every matter of wisdom and understanding. Daniel also understood visions and dreams. He remained there until the first year of King Cyrus (Dan. 1:1-21). Commit to purity and reap greater learning and competence in your work.

Ask God for Wisdom During Crisis
Nebuchadnezzar threatened to kill the magicians and astrologers if they were unable to tell what he dreamt. After they said it was too difficult, Daniel spoke to Arioch, commander of the king's guard, with wisdom and tact asking why the king issued a harsh decree. Daniel went to the king and asked for time to interpret the dream. After Daniel explained the matter to his three friends, they prayed to God for mercy. During the night the mystery was revealed. Daniel praised God for His wisdom and power in setting up kings, removing them, giving wisdom to the wise, knowledge to the discerning, revealing deep and hidden things and knowing what lies in darkness. He praised Him for giving wisdom, power and making known the king's dream (Dan. 2:1-23). Ask God for wisdom and power during times of crisis.

Communicate God's Revelation with Humility to Unbelievers
Daniel told Arioch not to execute Babylon's wise men as he would interpret the dream to the king. Daniel said to the king that no wise man could explain the mystery except the God in heaven who revealed mysteries and future events to Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel did not take credit but said God wanted the king to know the dream's interpretation. The gold head was Nebuchadnezzar who ruled over all mankind and animals. After him, an inferior kingdom would
arise, next a bronze kingdom to rule over the earth and finally a fourth strong as iron to crush the others. The feet and toes consisted of baked clay and iron representing a divided kingdom with strong and brittle elements that would not remain united. God would set up a kingdom to crush and end all others, but would endure forever itself. It  represented the rock cut out of a mountain without human hands that broke to pieces the iron, bronze, clay, silver and gold (Dan. 2:24-45a). Communicate God's revelation with boldness, wisdom and humility to unbelievers.

Credit God for Wisdom Leading to Influence
After Daniel said the great God showed the king future events with a trustworthy interpretation, Nebuchadnezzar fell prostate before him, paid honor and ordered an offering and incense presented to Daniel. The king said that Daniel's god was God of gods, Lord of kings and revealer of mysteries. He placed Daniel in a high position, lavished many gifts, made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of the wise men. At Daniel's request, the king appointed his three friends adminstrators over the Babylon while he remained in the royal court (Dan. 2:45b-49). Credit God for wisdom and power leading to promotion, provision and influence.

Refuse Idol Worship While Trusting God During Stress
Nebuchadnezzar made a 90-foot-high gold image for everyone to worship, otherwise people were thrown into a blazing furnace. Some astrologers noticed Daniel's three friends not serving their gods or worshiping the gold image. Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego told the king they would not defend themselves as God could rescue them while inside the blazing furnace. Even if He did not, they would not serve Babylon's gods  or worship the gold image. The king was furious, ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter, commanded the three men to be tied and thrown in the furnace. The fire killed the men who carried them. The king saw four men walking in the fire unbound and unharmed with the fourth looking like the son of gods. The three men came out unharmed with no singing or scorching on their heads or robes and without smell of fire on them (Dan. 3:1-27). Refuse worshiping idols and trust God during stressful circumstances.

Watch Unbelievers Praise God Because of Believers' Sacrifice and Miracles
Nebuchadnezzar praised their God who sent His angel and rescued His servants. They trusted in Him, defied the king's command and were willing to die rather than serve or worship any god except their own. The king decreed that anyone who said anything against their God would be killed since no other god could save in this way. The king promoted Shadrach, Meshacha and Abednego in Babylon (Dan. 3:28-30). Watch unbelievers praise God because of believers' sacrifice and related miracles.

How have you trusted God during a temptation, crisis or stressful circumstances? What was the benefit?

Encouragements To Trusting and Obeying God (Insights in Prophets)

2/23/2013

"All God's revelations are sealed to us until they are opened to us by obedience. You will never get them open by philosophy or thinking. Immediately you obey, a flash of light comes. Let God's truth work in you by soaking in it, not by worrying into it. Obey God in the thing He is at present showing you, and instantly the next thing is opened up. We read tomes on the work of the Holy Spirit when...five minutes of drastic obedience would make things clear as a sunbeam. We say, I suppose I shall understand these things some day. You can understand them now: it is not study that does it, but obedience. The tiniest fragment of obedience, and heaven opens up and the profoundest truths of God are yours straight away. God will never reveal more truth about Himself till you obey what you know already. Beware of being wise and prudent" (Oswald Chambers).

God encourages you to trust and obey Him by binding yourself to His covenant, rest in Him who defends your cause, trust in His power and wisdom, remember how He defends your cause and beware of consequences in disobeying God.

Bind Yourself to God's Covenant
Jeremiah said Babylon would be captured, Bel and her images shamed and Marduk and her idols filled with terror. Nations from the north attacked and laid waste her land. Israel and Judah had tears as they sought the Lord, asked the way to Zion and bound themselves in an eternal covenant. Shepherds led God's people astray, devoured by their enemies and sinned against the Lord. All who passed Babylon were horrified because of her wounds. Israel was a scattered flock devoured by the king of Assyria and Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. God punished Babylon and Assyria because in arrogance they opposed and defied Him (Jer. 50:1-32). Bind yourself to God's covenant to prevent shame, wounds and defeat.

Rest in God Who Defends Your Cause
The Redeemer and Lord Almighty vigorously defended Israel's and Judah's cause. He brought rest to their land and unrest to Babylon. A sword went against her false prophets and they became fools. Warriors became filled with terror while horses, chariots and foreigners became like women. Their treasures became plundered and their idols went mad with terror. No one lived in the land. Anguished gripped the Babylonian king. No one could challenge God and no shepherd could stand against Him (Jer. 50:33-46). Rest in God who defends your cause and defeats spiritual enemies.

Trust in God's Power and Wisdom
God stirred up the spirit of a destroyer against Babylon to give everything over to the Lord. He did not forsake Israel and Judah even though they were full of guilt. Babylon made the whole earth drunk as nations drank her wine and went mad. Babylon could not be healed as her judgment reached to the skies. The Lord stirred up the kings of the Medes because His purpose was to destroy Babylon. God made and founded the earth by His power and wisdom. He stretched out the heavens by His understanding. Every man was senseless, without knowledge and shamed by his idols. His images were worthless. God's people were His weapon for battle to shatter nations and destroy kingdoms including every inhabitant. God repaid Babylon for all the wrong they did in Zion since His purposes stood. He exhausted the strength of Babylon's warriors (Jer. 51:1-32). Trust in God's power and wisdom to destroy Satanic kingdoms.

Remember How God Defends Your Cause
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon threw God's people into confusion,  swallowed them like a serpent and spewed them out. God defended the cause of His people. Babylon became a heap of ruins and an object of horror where no one lived. God's people were to remember the Lord and think on Jerusalem as they were disgraced, insulted and shamed because foreigners entered the holy places of the Lord's house. God made Babylon's officials, wise men, governors, officers and warriors drunk and they all died. The Lord Almighty leveled Babylon's thick wall and set her high gates on fire. The peoples exhausted themselves for nothing. Their labor was fuel for the flames. Jeremiah told Seraiah to read aloud the disasters predicted for Babylon, tie a stone to the scroll and throw it into the Euphrates. It represented how Babylon would sink and rise no more (Jer. 51:33-64). Remember how God defends your cause so you don't exhaust your strength.

Beware of Consequences in Disobeying God
Zedekiah's evil in rebelling against the king of Babylon thrusted him from God's presence. Babylon kept Jerusalem under siege for two years resulting in famine and the city wall broken. Babylon captured Zedekiah and his army, killed his sons, blinded Zedekiah's eyes and put him in prison until he died. They burned the temple, royal palace and every house in Jerusalem. Babylon broke down all the walls around Jerusalem and carried most of the people into exile. They took the bronze in the temple along with gold and silver articles used in the temple service. The Babylonian king executed key leaders like Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the priest next in rank, three doorkeepers, officer over the fighting men, seven royal advisors, chief officer and 60 of his men (Jer. 52:1-34). Beware of consequences in disobeying God resulting in spiritual and physical death.

Which of the following items most encourage you to trust and obey God?
1. Bind yourself to God's covenant to prevent shame, wounds and defeat
2. Rest in God who defends your cause and defeats spiritual enemies
3. Trust in God's power and wisdom to destroy Satanic kingdoms
4. Remember how God defends your cause so you don't exhaust your strength
5. Beware of consequences in disobeying God resulting in spiritual and physical death.

Would You Like To See God Do the Miraculous? (Insights in Psalms)

11/8/2012

Picture
"When God is going to do something wonderful, He begins with a difficulty.... When He is going to do something miraculous, He begins with an impossibility" (Charles Inwood).

Would you like to see God do the miraculous in your life? Just observe nature through the rain, clouds and lightning. God commands the powerful lightning to strike at the exact spot where He directed. He causes floods to punish and rain to provide. God does this to get our attention so we stop our labor and get to know His work instead.

Listen with Wisdom
The three men stopped answering Job because he was righteous in his own eyes and justified himself. Elihu became very angry with his three friends who condemned Job without refuting him. Elihu was the youngest and said a man's spirit gave understanding. He waited and listened to their reasoning, but none proved Job wrong or answered his arguments. Elihu was like bottled-up wine and spoke to find relief without flattery (Job 32:1-22). Listen with wisdom when someone justifies himself.

Pray for Purity
Elihu told Job that his words came from an upright heart. He heard Job say that he was pure without sin but God found fault with him. God spoke in dreams and visions while men slept to prevent pride and being killed in battle. A man may find constant distress as his flesh wasted away to nothing. If an angel acted graciously as a mediator, then his flesh was renewed like a child's. He prayed to God, found favor, shouted for joy and was restored to his righteous state. He told men that he sinned and God redeemed his soul from the pit to enjoy the light. Elihu wanted Job to be cleared  as he taught him wisdom (Job 33:1-33). Pray for purity so you are restored to righteousness.

Trust God's Fairness
Elihu asked the other wise men to discern and learn together what was right and good. Job said he was innocent but God denied him justice and inflicted an incurable wound. Elihu said God would not do evil but repaid a man what his conduct deserved. God sustained the life of everyone and showed no partiality to princes and did not favor the rich over the poor. He saw men's ways, punished wickedness and heard the cries of the needy. God kept the godless man from ruling and laying snares on the people. Elihu said Job should be tested for answering like a wicked man since he rebelled against God by multiplying words against Him (Job 34:1-37). Trust God's fairness to punish wickedness and not favor the rich.

Pray for Wisdom and Relief
Elihu questioned Job's thinking that there was no gain in not sinning since it affected himself. Men cried under oppression but did not acknowledge God their Maker who gave songs in the night and taught wisdom. He would not answer men cries because of their arrogance. Elihu questioned Job's assertions that God did not punish or notice wickedness (Job 35:1-16). Pray for wisdom and relief from wickedness.

Repent of Evil

Elihu said God was just and mighty in His purpose and did not despise men. He gave the afflicted their rights, kept His eyes on the righteous, enthroned them with kings and exalted them forever. If men were bound with chains and held fast by cords of affliction, He commanded them to repent of their evil. If they obeyed and served God, they experienced prosperity and contentment. By not listening, they died without knowledge (Job 36:1-12). Repent of evil and obey God to experience freedom, prosperity and contentment.

Exalt God's Greatness
The godless of heart harbored resentment and did not cry for help. God was wooing Job from the jaws of distress to a spacious place free from restriction in the comfort of a table laden with choice food. Be careful not to be enticed with riches or a large bribe instead of affliction. Because God exalted Himself in His power, glorify His greatness and His works. Just as He spread out the clouds, scattered His lightning and commanded it to strike its mark, God governed the nations and provided food in abundance (Job 36:13-33). Exalt God's greatness and power as you look to Him for abundance and provision.

Stop Your Labor
Listen to the roar of God's voice when He unleashed His lightning and thundered with His majestic voice to hold nothing back. He did great things beyond understanding by telling the snow to fall on the earth and the rain shower to be a mighty downpour. He did this so all men would stop their labor and know His work. The breath of God produced ice, loaded the clouds with moisture and scattered His lightning through them. They swirled around at His direction and command to punish men or water His earth to show His love (Job 37:1-13). Stop your labor by reflecting on God's power in nature to punish men or show His love.

Revere God's Attributes
Elihu told Job to stop and consider God's wonders in hanging the clouds and making His lightning flash in perfect knowledge. Since humankind cannot do these things, what right do they have to tell Him what to do. Because God Almighty was beyond reach and exalted in power with justice and great righteousness, He did not oppress. Therefore, men revere Him as He regarded the wise in heart (Job 37:14-24). Revere God's attributes and do not tell Him what to do.

How to see the miraculous occur in your life:
1. Listen with wisdom
2. Pray for purity
3. Trust God's fairness
4. Pray for wisdom and relief
5. Repent of evil
6. Exalt God's greatness
7. Stop your labor
8. Revere God's attributes

How to Live Life Rightly (Insights in Prophets)

10/8/2012

Picture
"When I find myself racing around, trying to fill a day with mindless tasks or petty entertainment, this is usually the time that God whispers to my heart to draw away with Him and to silence my heart as He wishes to speak" (Katherine Walden).

Slow down your life as you trust, long, pray, feed, return and listen to God so you can live life rightly.

Trust God for Perfect Peace and Salvation
In the strong city, God set up walls for salvation. Open the gates that the righteous nation and faithful may enter. He keeps the steadfast mind in perfect peace who trust in God. Trust Him forever, an eternal rock, who humbles those who dwell on high with the feet of the oppressed and the poor (Is. 26:1-6). Trust in God as your anchor for perfect peace and salvation.

Long for God’s Name and Obey Heartily His Laws
God makes the path of the righteous is smooth. We wait for Him while walking in the way of His laws. God's name and renown are the desire of our hearts. Our soul longs for You in the morning and night. People of the world learn righteousness when His judgments come upon the earth. The wicked do not learn righteousness or regard God's majesty when grace is shown to them (Is. 26:7-10). Long for God's majestic name and obey heartily His laws.

Allow God to Do His Works for Extension of His Glory
The wicked were shamed when they saw God's zeal for His people. God established peace and accomplished all our works. We honor His name above any human that He brought to ruin. God increased and gained glory for Himself by extending the borders of the land. They could barely pray during His discipline as they sought Him in distress. They gave birth to wind and did not bring salvation to the earth. The dead will live and their bodies will rise to shout for joy. God will punish people for their sins (Is. 26:11-21). Allow God to do His works for the extension of His glory.

Pray and Feed on God’s Word for Protection from Spiritual Enemies
God punished with His sword and killed Leviathan, the serpent who lives in the sea. Sing about a fruitful vineyard that the Lord watered and guarded continually so no one could harm it. They relied on God's protection and made peace with Him. Jacob took root and Israel blossomed to fill the whole world with fruit (Is. 27:1-6). Pray and feed on God's word for protection from spiritual enemies.

Pray Against Idolatry and False Gods to Prepare for Corporate Worship of God
Prayer and spiritual warfare demolishes idolatry and false gods. Because cities were desolate and its people had no understanding, their Creator would not show compassion and grace to them. The Lord would thresh from the Euphrates to the brook of Egypt. He blew a great trumpet  to gather the exiles from Assyria and Egypt to worship the Lord in the holy mountain of Jerusalem (Is. 27:7-13). Pray against idolatry and false gods to prepare for corporate worship of God.

Return to God as Source of Strength for Stability and Discernment
Woe to the fading beauty in Ephraim at the head of a fertile valley caused by pride and drunkedness. God judged them with a hailstorm, destructive wind and flooding. In that day, the Lord Almighty would be a glorious crown, beautiful wreath, spirit of justice and source of strength for the remnant of His people who return to God. Wine caused confusion and stumbling among the priests and prophets (Is. 28:1-8). Return to God as source of strength  for internal stability and discernment.

Trust in Christ as Precious Cornerstone for Rest, Justice, Righteousness and Truth
God taught and explained His knowledge to those weaned from milk. He told Israel through foreign lips and strange lips to give rest to the weary. Because of not listening, they would be broken, snared and taken captive. God spoke to scoffers ruling in Jerusalem that their covenant with evil enabled lies and falsehood to became their refuge. God laid a tested and precious cornerstone in Zion as a sure foundation so anyone who trusts in it would not be in a hurry. He made justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line so hail would sweep away lies and end their covenant with death and evil. Stop mocking or chains would become heavier since the Lord Almighty told Isaiah of destruction decreed against the land (Is. 28:9-22). Trust in Christ as  tested and precious cornerstone for rest, justice, righteousness and truth.

Listen to God’s Word for Wisdom and Counsel in Right Living
A farmer does not plow continually to break up the soil. After leveling the surface, he sows caraway, scatters cummin and plants wheat, barley and spelt in the proper places. God instructs and teaches him the right way. Caraway is not threshed with a sledge nor a cartwheel rolled over cummin. You beat caraway with a rod, cummin with a stick and ground grain to make bread but not thresh it forever. He drives the wheels of his threshing cart over it but his horses do not grind it. The Lord makes His counsel wonderful and His wisdom great (Is. 28:23-29). Listen to God's word for wisdom and counsel in right living.

Review the underlined summaries to draw near to God, His word and Christ, the cornerstone, so  you can live rightly.

Ingredients Required to Grow Through Trials (Insights in Psalms)

9/24/2012

Picture
"I am not a theologian or a scholar, but I am very aware of the fact that pain is necessary to all of us. In my own life, I think I can honestly say that out of the deepest pain has come the strongest conviction of the presence of God and the love of God" (Elisabeth Elliot).

Job's great trial in losing his children and health allowed him to experience the presence and love of God. He placed His confidence in God knowing he was not pure. He trusted God to do great things like healing and vindicating him. Job sought the encouragement of friends when he suffered great pain. His last great need was to get considerate feedback and engage in dialogue with friends. Job 4-6 explains the ingredients required to grow through trials.

Eliphaz asked Job if he would be impatient because of being compelled to speak to him. He knew that Job instructed and supported many who stumbled and strengthened the weak. Now Job himself was discouraged because of trouble. Should he not be confident in the fear of God and place hope in his integrity? (Job 4:1-6). Place confidence in the fear of God, not your integrity, during trials.

Consider that God does not destroy the upright. Those who sow evil reap it and come to an end. God gave Eliphaz a vision wondering if anyone can be pure before God. If He charged His angels with error, how can people who live in houses of clay without wisdom not die? (Job 4:7-21). No one is pure before God during trials.

Was there anyone who could answer Job's concerns?Resentment and anger killed a fool and the simple. People devoured one's harvest and people sought his wealth. Man is born for trouble as the sparks fly upward. Eliphaz said he would seek God and place Job's cause before Him because He does great and unsearchable things. He gives rain, exalts the lowly, frustrates the crafty and thwarts the advice of the cunning. God saves the poor from the hand of the mighty to give them hope (Job 5:1-16). Trust God to do great things during trials.

Job should not despise God's discipline since He would heal him eventually. God would redeem him in famine,  protect him from an evil tongue, allow him to endure violence, be confident in many children and have strength in old age (Job 5:17-27). God heals and vindicates His children during trials.

Job wondered if his misery would outweigh the sands of the sea. His words were rash because of the poison and terror of the Almighty's arrows against him. Job rejoiced that in his great pain he had not denied the Holy One's words even though he was powerless to deliver himself (Job 6:1-13). People experience great pain during trials.

Job said a despairing man should have kindness from his friends so he would not forsake the fear of the Almighty. His brothers acted deceitfully like brooks that vanished before travelers could drink from them. Job's friends proved to be no help because they feared the dreadful things he experienced. Job never asked for money or to be delivered from his enemies (Job 6:14-23). People need encouragement from friends during trials.

Job said he would be quiet and listen if Eliphaz taught him where he went wrong. Since Eliphaz was his friend and Job was honest, he asked for consideration to not cast his words aside like wind. Job's integrity was at stake in believing there was no wickedness in his speech (Job 6:24-30). People need helpful feedback and dialogue with friends during trials.

If you are going through a trial, place your confidence in God. Trust God to do great things like healing and vindicating you during trials. Seek encouragement and helpful feedback as you dialogue with friends during trials.

Trust God Fully for Your Ministry and Destiny (Insights in Law)

"In radio or TV terms we are receivers. If we do occasionally transmit signals, we transmit only what we have first received. Everything has been given to us from life in the womb to life in the Spirit. We are beneficiaries, totally blessed because totally loved by God. Sanctity after all is only letting the love of God loose, letting him rampage through our lives" (Cyril Brooks). In accomplishing your ministry and destiny, trust in God fully to gie you partners, guidance, power, provision, confidence and victory.

Partners
In the fortieth year after Moses defeated Sihon of Amorites and Og king of Bashan, he explained the law. Israel was supposed to go to the Amorites and Canaanites as far as Euphrates and possess land that the Lord swore to Abraham and their descendants. Moses said he was not able to bear the burden of a multitude of people by himself. God would bless him as He promised by choosing wise, discerning and experienced men from his tribes. They were appointed to be heads over him as leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties and of tens, and officers for his tribes (Deut. 1:1-15). Choose wise, discerning and experienced men who share the load of ministry.

Guidance
God charged the judges to hear cases and judge righteously without partiality between men, fellow countryman or alien. They were not to fear man since judgment was God’s. Any difficult case was brought to God to hear. He commanded all things they should do (Deut. 1:16-18). Listen to God’s impartial judgment to decide difficult issues.

Power
At Kadesh Barnea, God told them to go up and take the land without fear or discouragement. They sent out 12 spies saying it was a good land that God was giving them. The people were unwilling to go up, but rebelled against God’s command and grumbled. They said the Lord brought them out of Egypt for destruction because God hated them. People were bigger and taller, while the cities were large and fortified. The Lord said not to fear as He went before them to fight on their behalf just as He did in Egypt before their eyes. Only Caleb and Joshua trusted God because they followed the Lord fully. Everyone else acted presumptuously. As a result, the Amorites crushed them as the Lord did not listen to their prayers (Deut. 1:19-46). Trust the Lord fully who fights for you and do not fear obstacles.

Provision

The Lord commanded the people to pass through the territory of Esau’s and Lot’s sons. They must be careful not to provoke them as He gave Mt. Seir to Esau as a possession. They were to buy food and water from them. The Lord blessed them in all they did through 40 years in the wilderness not lacking anything (Deut. 2:1-7). Follow God’s direction as He provides every need.

Confidence

They passed through Seir where descendants of Esau lived. The Lord told them to not provoke the Moabites to war since God would not give them any part of their land. After they left Kadesh Barnea, 38 years passed until that generation of fighting men perished since the Lord was against them. They were not to provoke the Ammonites to war since God gave the land to the descendants of Lot. God told them to defeat Sihon the Amorite and take possession of their land by engaging in battle. He put fear upon every nation as they trembled because of them (Deut. 2:8-25). Embrace your mission in life confidently because God defeats evil powers.

Victory
Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let them pass through their land for the Lord hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate. The Lord delivered him over to them so they captured all his cities and completely destroyed everyone. Not one city was too strong for them. According to the Lord’s command, they did not encroach on any of the Ammonites’ land (Deut. 2:26-37). Enter into your unique destiny relying on God's victory, but do not covet others' ministry.

To accomplish your ministry and destiny, ask God daily to give you partners, guidance, power, provision, confidence and victory.

Preparation Required to Equip the Next Generation (Insights in Prophets)

7/17/2012

Picture
Hezekiah was a godly leader, but failed to equip the next generation. Instead of being concerned about his legacy, his sole focus was enjoying the final years of his life. He did not prepare his son, Manasseh, who succeeded him as king. As a result, Israel struggled without good spiritual leadership to face the Babylonian captivity that came after Hezekiah died.

Hezekiah's servants came to Isaiah during "a day of distress, rebuke, and rejection" with no strength to deliver. Isaiah said not to fear Assyria's blasphemy of God since they would hear a rumor, return to their land and be killed by the sword. Sennacherib said that Assyria destroyed gods in various nations and it was futile to trust in "your" God (2 Kings 19:1-13). Trust in God and don't fear in times of distress, rebuke and rejection.

Hezekiah spread out the letter and prayed before the Lord God of Israel enthroned over all the kingdoms of the earth who made heaven and earth. He asked God to listen to Sennacherib's reproach of the living God who destroyed nations that worshiped gods made by human hands. Hezekiah asked for deliverance so the earth would know that God is Lord (2 Kings 19:14-19). Ask for God's deliverance as you acknowledge His Lordship over heaven and earth.

God answered through Isaiah that Sennacherib was despised and mocked because of his pride against God and his trust in many chariots. God planned that he would "turn fortified cities into ruinous heaps," but defeat him by putting His hook in his nose and bridling his lips (2 Kings 19:20-28). Rest in God's sovereignty and power to defeat evil forces.

In the third year, they would sow, plant vineyards and eat its fruit with the surviving remnant from Judah taking root downward and bearing fruit upward. The zeal of the Lord would perform this. God would defend Jerusalem and save it for His own and David's sake. The angel of the Lord killed 185,000 Assyrians. Sennacherib was killed while worshiping in the house of Nisroch, his god (2 Kings 19:29-37). Meditate on God's word to bear spiritual fruit and rely on God's protection to overcome evil.

When Hezekiah realized he was near death, he prayed to God. He acknowledged walking in truth with a whole heart and doing good in His sight. God healed, added 15 years to his life and delivered Jerusalem from Assyria for His sake. Hezekiah laid a cake of figs on his boil and he recovered. The Lord brought the shadow on the stairway backward ten steps as a sign that he would be healed (2 Kings 20:1-11). Ask God for good health to walk in truth wholeheartedly and do good in His sight instead of selfishly pursuing your own pleasure.

Hezekiah showed the king of Babylon all the treasures in his house. Isaiah predicted that everything in his house would be carried to Babylon along with descendants who would become officials in the palace of Babylon's king. Hezekiah was reassured that peace and truth would remain during his days. Manasseh his son became king in his place (2 Kings 20:12-21). Use your insights and resources to spiritually equip the next generation to meet future challenges.

How to prepare yourself to equip the next generation:
1. Trust in God and don't fear in times of distress, rebuke and rejection
2. Ask for God's deliverance as you acknowledge His Lordship over heaven and earth
3.   Rest in God's sovereignty and power to defeat evil forces
4.  Meditate on God's word to bear spiritual fruit and rely on God's protection to overcome evil
5. Ask God for good health to walk in truth wholeheartedly and do good in His sight instead of selfishly pursuing your own pleasure

Trusting in the Tangible Instead of God (Insights in Prophets)

It's so easy to place our trust in something tangible like wealth, beauty, strength and talent instead of God and His promises. The challenge of living by faith is we can't see God's kingdom at work in the natural. We pin our hopes on human resources or pursue our pleasure by relying on them. It gives rise to sinful motives and acts. Having to take a large financial loss on our dream house because we moved to another state caused me to consider whether I was trusting in money or God. King David had a crisis of faith when he trusted in a census to determine his military strength instead of trusting in God.

The Lord's anger burned against Israel and incited David to number Israel and Judah. Joab questioned why he would "delight in this thing." He and his commanders numbered 800,000 valiant men in Israel and 500,000 men in Judah who drew the sword (2 Sam. 24:1-9). Trust in human resources instead of God angers Him.

When David's heart troubled him after numbering the people, he told the Lord that he sinned greatly. He asked God to take away his iniquity for he acted foolishly. God instructed the prophet Gad to give David three consequences for his sin: seven years of famine in his land, flee three months before his foes pursued him or three days of pestilence. David's distress caused him to ask for the Lord's great mercies instead of falling into men's hands (2 Sam. 24:10-14). Confession of sin leads to Gods' mercy.

The Lord sent pestilence and 70,000 men died from Dan to Beersheba. The angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem but the Lord stopped the calamity. David said to the Lord that he had sinned and done wrong (2 Sam. 24:15-17). Take responsibility for your sin stops further consequences.

After Gad told David to construct an altar to the Lord, he wanted to buy the threshing floor of Araunah to build it so the plague would stop. Araunah offered up free oxen so David could do a burnt offering. He bought the threshing floor and oxen for 50 shekels of silver as he did not want to offer a burnt offering for nothing. David built an altar to the Lord and offered burnt and peace offerings. The Lord was moved by entreaty for the land and the plague stopped (2 Sam. 24:18-25). Costly obedience and intercession causes God to act.

Is there something that God wants you to surrender to Him at a cost because you are not seeking Him first (Matt. 6:33; Is. 55:1).

Plan to Fight Idolatry (Insights in Psalms)

Tim Keller says the following about idolatry:
1. Anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God,
2. Anything you seek to give you what only God can give you.
3. A counterfeit god is anything so central and essential to your life that, should you lose it, your life would feel hardly worth living
4. An idol is whatever you look to and say, in your heart of hearts, “If I have that, then I’ll feel my life has meaning, then I’ll know I have value, then I’ll feel significant and secure.”Psalm 115-117 explains how to make God Lord instead of idols

Glory in God's Love and Truth

Give glory to God's name because of His lovingkindness and truth so the nations can see Him. God does whatever He pleases from the heavens. Idols of silver and gold are the work of man's hands, which can't speak, see, hear, smell, feel or walk. People become like the idols they trust (Ps. 115:1-8). Glory in God's love and truth instead of idols made by men.

Trust and Fear the Lord
The Psalmist calls on Israel to trust in and fear the Lord as their help and shield. He blesses everyone equally and gives increase to your family as maker of heaven and earth (Ps. 115:9-15). Trust and fear the Lord because He is the only one who offers help and protection.

Bless and Praise the Lord
God gives the earth to men so they can bless and praise the Lord forever (Ps. 115:16-18). Bless and praise the Lord as your prime purpose in life.

Call Upon the Lord
I love and call upon the Lord because He hears my prayers. I found distress and sorrow when death and evil surrounded me. I called upon the Lord's name to save my life (Ps. 116:1-4). Call upon the Lord for deliverance when facing distress, sorrow, death and evil.

Admit Your Brokenness
God's graciousness, righteousness and compassion preserve and save me. My soul rested as the Lord dealt bountifully and rescued me from death, tears and stumbling. Acknowledging my affliction led to believing God and recognizing the lies of men (Ps. 116:5-11). Admit your brokenness and trust in God's grace, righteousness and compassion instead of men's lies.

Embrace Your Freedom in Christ
In response to the Lord's benefits, I lift up the cup of salvation, call upon the Lord and pay my vows to Him in the presence of others. As God's servant who loosened my bonds, I offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving and call upon His name in the Lord's courts (Ps. 116:12-19). Embrace your freedom in Christ so you can thank and call upon God in the presence of others.

Praise God for Love and Truth
All nations should praise God because of His great lovingkindness and eternal truth (Ps. 117:1-2). Never forget to praise God because He's the one who offers love and truth.

Consider this plan to fight idolatry:
1.  Spend time glorying in God's love and truth
2. Take action in trust, fear, bless, praise and calling upon Him
3. Admit your brokenness
4. Embrace your freedom in Christ
5. Praise God for His love and truth

Key to Well-Being (Insights in Psalms)

8/3/2011

Picture
You discovered the key to happiness as moment-by-moment trust, security, protection and satisfaction in God (Ps. 91). Martin Seligman, one of the founders of positive psychology, has written in his new book, Flourish, that the goal of well-being has five elements:
  • Positive emotion (of which happiness and life satisfaction are all aspects)
  • Engagement
  • Relationships
  • Meaning
  • Achievement
Seligman defines what it means to “flourish” by asking what it is that enables you to cultivate your talents, build deep, lasting relationships with others, feel pleasure, and contribute meaningfully to the world. However, God defines well-being and flourishing as praise of, submit to and trust in God's attributes (Ps. 92-94).

Praise God's Love, Faithfulness and Purpose
It's good to thank and sing praises with instruments to the Most High God because of His lovingkindness and faithfulness (Ps. 92:1-4). Sing praise to God's attributes of love and faithfulness.

His great works make me glad. His purposes are deep and misunderstood by stupid men. God ultimately destroys the wicked and scatters our enemies (Ps. 92:5-9). Be glad in God's works and deep purposes.

His fresh oil exalts me over my foes. I flourish like the palm tree in the courts of my God. Righteous men still thrive in old age. They declare that the Lord is upright as their rock (Ps. 92:10-15). You thrive and are exalted when God becomes your rock.

Submit to God's Reign, Strength and Holiness
The Lord reigns and is clothed with majesty and strength. The world and His throne are firmly established eternally (Ps. 93:1-2). The Lord reigns eternally with majesty and strength.

The floods exalt God so people understand He is mighty and holy (Ps. 93:3-5). Creation exalts the mighty and holy God.

Trust in God's Judgment, Advocacy and Peace
God judges the earth and pays back the proud who boast, speak arrogantly and afflict His people. They kill widows, immigrants and orphans thinking that God doesn't see (Ps. 94:1-7). God judges the proud who afflict marginalized people.

God hears, sees, chastens and rebukes wickedness. He teaches humankind knowledge since He knows their their thoughts (Ps. 94:8-11). God sees and rebukes wickedness.

Blessed are those He corrects and teaches out of His law. God grants them relief from adversity. He won't abandon or forsake His people. Who will be my advocate against evildoers? (Ps. 94:12-16). God advocates, corrects and teaches His people so they can experience relief from adversity.

Ultimately, only the Lord's lovingkindness will help and hold me up. When anxious thoughts multiply within me, His consolations delight my soul. The Lord is my stronghold against evil plots. He is the rock of refuge and destroys evil (Ps. 94:17-23). God's love provides psychological relief from anxiety.

To experience sense of flourishing and well-being, do the following:
1.  Praise God's love, faithfulness and purpose
2. Submit to God's reign, strength and holiness
3. Trust in God's judgment, advocacy and peace

My goal is to ignite the hearts of people by explaining God's word in the Law, Prophets, Psalms and New Testament consecutively, much like the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:32,44). I have been a missionary in Lincoln, NE, for 13 years with Christ For the City Int. and Sync with God.

Sync with God is a highly versatile web app that hosts on-demand, virtual small groups. Sync is designed to connect young seekers in the faith and scripturally-trained mentors, even globally. It offers a safe, engaging interface for Millennials/Gen. Z and is readily adaptable to technical advances well into the future.
