How to Know Your Labor in Christ Gains Rest and Significance (Insights in NT)

In order to know your labor in Christ gains rest and significance; remember Israel birthed Jesus how rules and protects; overcome Satan's accusations by Lamb's blood, word of testimony and lose life for His sake, endure patiently and faithfully by resisting the devil and antichrist; resist deception and compromise in the great tribulation;  achieve victory in Christ through purity and faithfulness; and escape eternal torment in hell.

Remember Israel Birthed Jesus Who Rules and Protects
A pregnant woman cried out in pain just before she gave birth. A large red dragon with seven heads, ten horns and seven crown appeared as another sign in heaven. His tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky. The dragon stood in front of the woman to devour her child. She gave birth to a male child who would rule all the nations with an iron scepter. Her child was snatched up to God and to His throne. The woman fled in the desert and where she was protected for 1,260 days (Rev. 12:1-6). Remember Israel birthed Jesus who rules the nations and protects His people during the great tribulation.

Overcome Satan's Accusations by Lamb's Blood, Word of Testimony and Lose Life for His Sake
After Michael and his angels fought the dragon (serpent, devil, Satan) and his angels, he was hurled to earth and led the world astray. Salvation, power and kingdom of God along with the authority of His Christ came. The accuser of brothers who accused them before God day and night was hurled down. Believers overcame him by the Lamb's blood, word of their testimony and willingness to die. Being filled with fury, the devil knew his time was short and pursued the woman who gave birth to the male child. The woman was cared for in the desert for 1,260 days. The serpent spewed water like a river to overtake the woman but the earth swallowed the river. The dragon was enraged and made war against those who obeyed God's commandments and held to Jesus' testimony (Rev. 12:7-17). Overcome Satan's accusations by Lamb's blood, word of testimony and lose your life for His sake.

Endure Patiently and Faithfully By Resisting Devil and Antichrist
A beast (antichrist) came out of the sea with ten horns, seven heads and a mouth like a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power, throne and great authority. The whole world followed the beast who uttered proud words, blasphemies and exercised his authority for 42 months over every tribe, people, language and nation. Men worshiped the dragon because he gave authority to the beast who warred and conquered the saints. Those who names were not written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb worshiped the beast. Because God determined who would go into captivity or killed, saints must patiently endure with faithfulness (Rev. 13:1-10). Endure patiently and faithfully by resisting the devil and antichrist.

Resist Deception and Compromise in Great Tribulation
Another beast (false prophet) came out of the earth with two horns like a lamb who spoke like a dragon. He exercised his authority on behalf of the first beast (antichrist). He made everyone worship the antichrist whose fatal wound was healed. His miraculous signs like fire coming down from heaven deceived men. He ordered an image be set up in honor of the antichrist. He was given power so the image had breath, spoke and killed anyone who refused to worship it. He forced everyone to receive a mark on his right hand or forehead to buy or sell with the beast's number: 666 (Rev. 13:11-18). Resist deception and compromise by not taking a mark to buy or sell from the antichrist,

Achieve Victory in Christ Through Purity and Truthfulness
The Lamb stood on Mount Zion with 144,000 who had His Father's name written on their foreheads. John heard a loud sound like harpists playing their harps singing a new song before the throne, four living creatures and elders. Only the 144,000 redeemed from the earth who stayed pure with women and followed the Lamb wherever He went could learn the song. They were purchased from among men and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb. No lie was found in their mouths (Rev. 14:1-5). Achieve victory in Christ through purity and truthfulness so God hears your new song.

Escape Eternal Torment in Hell Knowing Labor in Christ Gains Rest and Significance
Another angel had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those on earth. He said to fear, worship and give the Creator God glory because the time of judgment was coming. A second angel said Babylon the Great fell, which made the nations drink the wine of her adulteries. A third angel said if anyone worshiped the beast, his image and received his mark, he would drink the cup of God's wrath. He would be tormented forever with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and the Lamb. This called for patient endurance for saints who obeyed God's commandments and remained faithful to Jesus. Those who died in the Lord from that point on were blessed since they rested from labor and their deeds followed them (Rev. 14:6-13). Escape eternal torment in hell knowing your labor in Christ gains rest and significance.

Realize Timeliness of God's Wrath in Final Battle of Armageddon
Someone like a son of man was seated on a white cloud with a crown of gold on his head and sharp sickle in his hand. Another angel said to take the sickle and reap because the earth's harvest was ripe. Another angel with charge of the fire called out to an angel to use its sharp sickle to gather clusters of ripe grapes from the earth's vine. It threw them into the great winepress of God's wrath. They were trampled in the winepress outside the city where blood flowed as high as horses' bridles for 180 miles (Rev. 14:14-20). Realize timeliness of God's wrath in final battle of Armageddon.

Know your labor in Christ gains rest and significance by remembering Israel birthed Jesus who rules and protects to escape eternal torment in hell, overcome Satan's accusations by the Lamb's blood, word of testimony and lose life for His sake to achieve victory in Christ though purity and faithfulness, and resist deception and compromise in the great tribulation by enduring patiently and faithfully.

Proclaiming God's Truth to Extend the Gospel (Insights in NT)

Picture
Proclaiming God's truth to extend the gospel is seen by testing the spirits to distinguish truth from falsehood, love God and others through the Holy Spirit, pray for sinning brothers to be kept safe from the evil one and idols, walk in Christ's teaching without welcoming false teachers, and support gospel workers with hospitality and finances.

Test Spirits to Distinguish Truth from Falsehood
They should test the spirits because of many false prophets in the world. God's Spirit overcame the spirit of the antichrist and acknowledged that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. Those from God listened to truth and the world to falsehood, which distinguished the the Spirit of truth from the spirit of falsehood (1 John 4:1-6). Test spirits to distinguish truth from falsehood whether they say Jesus Christ came in the flesh.

Love One Another Through the Holy Spirit
They could love one another because love came from God. Only those born of God and knew Him could love because He was love. He showed His love by sending His only Son into the world as an atoning sacrifice for their sin so they might live through Him. By loving God, they made His love complete and showed He lived in them. He gave His Spirit to show they lived in Him and He in them.  They saw and testified that the Father sent Jesus to be the world's Savior. By acknowledging Jesus as the Son of God, He lived in them and they in Him. They knew and relied on His love because God was love (1 John 4:7-16). Love one another through the Holy Spirit because God sent His Son as a sacrifice for sin.

Love God and Others Without Fear Because He First Loved You
By living in love, they became like God and confident in the day of judgment. Love contained no fear. Those with fear were not made perfect in love because love drove out the fear of punishment. They loved because God first loved them. Those who said they loved Him and hated their brothers lied.  People who did not love their brother whom they saw could not love God whom they did not see. He commanded those who loved Him to love their brothers (1 John 4:17-21). Love God and others without fear because He first loved you.

Obey His Commands Believing in Jesus as the Son of God
Those believing that Jesus was the Christ were born of God loving both the Father and His Son. Those who loved God and carried out His commands proved they loved His children. Loving God meant obeying His commands, which were not burdensome, since everyone born of Him overcame the world. Faith was the victory to overcome the world--believing in Jesus as the Son of God. Jesus came by water and blood with the Spirit of truth testifying in agreement. Believers in the Son of God had this testimony in their heart, but unbelievers made Him out as a liar. The testimony was that God gave them eternal life through His Son. He who had the Son had life and he who did not have the Son of God did not have life (1 John 5:1-12). Obey His commands believing in Jesus as the Son of God to overcome the world and gain eternal life.

The basis for obedience is Jesus coming in the flesh as a sacrifice for sin demonstrating God's love for you. You obey His commands by believing in Jesus as the Son of God to overcome the world and gain eternal life.

Pray Confidently for Sinning Brothers to Be Kept Safe from Evil One
John wrote these things to those who believed in the Son of God so they would know they had eternal life. They could be confident of answered prayer if they asked anything according to His will knowing that God heard them. Those who saw his brother commit sin not leading to death should pray knowing God would give him life. All wrong doing was sin and there was sin not leading to death. Those born of God did not continue in sin, but were kept safe so the evil one could not harm them. Children of God knew the world was under the control of the evil one. The Son of God came and gave them understanding to know the true God and eternal life so they could be kept from idols (1 John 5:13-21). Pray confidently for sinning brothers to be kept safe from the evil one and idols.

Walk in Christ's Teaching for Full Reward Without Welcoming False Teachers
John wrote to those with children who lived in truth and love through Jesus Christ. He had great joy to find some children walking in truth as the Father commanded. John reminded them that love was walking in obedience to His commands. Many deceivers and antichrists in the world did not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. John warned them to not lose what they worked for so they could be rewarded fully. Those not continuing in Christ's teaching did not have God, but those continuing in it had both the Father and Son. Anyone welcoming someone without this teaching shared in their wicked work. Instead of writing additional details, John hoped to talk in person so his joy would be complete (2 John). Walk in Christ' teaching for full reward without welcoming false teachers.

Support Gospel Workers with Hospitality and Finances
John prayed that his friend Gaius would enjoy good health and for his soul to prosper. He had no greater joy than his children walking in truth continually. Gaius showed love to strangers by sending them on their way worthy of God. They went out for His Name without help from unbelievers. By showing hospitality to strangers, they worked together for the truth, unlike Diotrephes who loved to be first. If John came, he would call attention to his malicious gossiping, refusing to welcome the brothers, stopping and putting those out of the church who did. People who did good were from God and those doing evil had not seen God. Demetrius was well spoken by everyone because he followed truth (3 John). Support gospel workers with hospitality and finances for physical and spiritual prosperity.

Answer the following questions about proclaiming God's truth to extend the gospel:
1. Are you testing the spirits to distinguish truth from falsehood?
2. Do you love God and others through the Holy Spirit?
3. Are you praying for sinning brothers to be kept safe from the evil one and idols
4. Are you walking in Christ's teaching and not welcoming false teachers?
5. Do you support gospel workers with hospitality and finances?

Steps In Rescuing Prodigals (Insights in Prophets)

God is active in rescuing prodigals  beginning with His sovereignty that spurs Him to action.  God's holiness protects prodigals from wrath, His love destroys those who harm them, His righteousness leads to godly lifestyle, His truth purifies their lips to call on Him and His power rescues them so they can walk with God.

The proper response of those who desire to rescue prodigals from sin is to reject complacency and idolatry, seek God in humility and righteousness, receive His inheritance, avoid a carefree lifestyle, wait on Him in truth without fear, and take delight in mighty God who empowers prodigals to walk with Him.

God's Sovereignty Spurs Him to Action
God said to Zephaniah during Josiah's reign that He would sweep everything from the earth. He would stretch His hand against those in Judah and Jerusalem who worshiped Baal and Molech without seeking God. He would punish those who filled the temple of their gods with violence and deceit along with the complacent who thought God was inactive. He plundered their wealth and demolished their houses. They would build houses and not live in them and plant vineyards and not drink the wine (Zeph. 1:1-13). Know God hates complacency, idolatry, violence and deceit.

God's Holiness Protects You From Wrath
The day of the Lord brought wrath, distress, anguish, trouble, ruin and gloom. People would walk like blind men because of sin. Their money could not save them. God's jealousy consumed and ended the whole world. The humble  who did what He commanded sought the Lord. They should seek righteousness and humility to gain shelter during the day of the Lord's anger (Zeph. 1:14-2:3). Seek God in humility and righteousness for protection from His wrath.

God's Love Destroys Those Who Harm You
God would destroy the Philistines so the remnant of Judah would dwell in the houses of Ashkelon. He cared and restored their fortunes. Moab and Ammon insulted and made threats against God's people who would inherit their land. After He destroyed all the gods of the land, every nation would worship Him (Zeph. 2:4-12). Receive His inheritance after He destroys every god that insults and threatens you.

God's Righteousness Leads to Godly Lifestyle
God would destroy Assyria and leave Nineveh desolate. This was a carefree city that lived in safety. Nineveh said that there was none besides her. Nineveh became a ruin with everyone scoffing at her (Zeph. 2:13-15). Avoid a carefree lifestyle that leads to ruin and scoffing.

God's Truth Purifies Your Lips
Zephaniah said Jerusalem was rebellious, accepted no correction and did not draw near to the Lord. Her officials were roaring lions, priests did violence to the law and  prophets were angry. God was righteous, dispensed justice and never failed. He demolished strongholds and destroyed cities. People acted corrupted and did not accept correction from God. They waited on Him for purified lips to call on His name. He removed those who rejoiced in pride only leaving the humble who trusted in God's name. Israel's remnant spoke no lies or deceit and no one made them afraid (Zeph. 3:1-13). Wait on God in truth without fear so purified lips can call on His name.

God's Power Rescues Prodigals
God turned back the enemy so Jerusalem did not fear. He was mighty to save and took great delight in them. He quieted them with His love and rejoiced over them with singing. God dealt with all who oppressed them, rescued the lame, gathered the scattered and gave them praise and honor in every land. He brought them home and  restored their fortunes before their eyes (Zeph. 3:14-20). Take delight in mighty God who rescues prodigals so they walk with Him.

Ask God to empower you in the following ways by rescuing prodigals from sin:
1. Reject complacency and idolatry
2. Seek God in humility and righteousness
3. Receive His inheritance
4. Avoid a carefree lifestyle
5. Wait on Him in truth without fear so you can call on Him
6. Delight in mighty God who rescues prodigals so they walk with Him

How to Pray To See Your Wounds Healed (Insights in Prophets)

4/22/2013

Picture
In the preceding book of Micah, you learned how to gain spiritual maturity in order to pray confidently so sin is defeated. Nahum explains how to pray in order to see your wounds healed. By praying God's attributes of goodness, sovereignty, power and truth, your wounds will be healed, especially the lust for control and materialism.

Trust God's Goodness Who Cares
Nahum said the Lord was a jealous God who poured out His wrath like fire against His enemies. He was slow to anger, great in power and did not leave the guilty unpunished. God dried up the sea, withered Bashan and Carmel and trembled the earth. No one withstood His indignation. The Lord was good and a refuge in times of trouble. He cared for those who trusted in Him. He made an end of Nineveh with an overwhelming flood and pursued His foes into darkness (Nahum 1:1-8). Trust God's goodness as a refuge who cares for you in times of trouble.

Trust God's Sovereignty to Bring Good News
God ended plots against Him. Nineveh would be cut down and not afflict Judah any more. God broke their yoke and tore shackles away. He commanded that Nineveh would have no descendants. God destroyed the carved images and cast idols in the temple of their gods. On the mountains was the feet who brought good news and proclaimed peace. Judah celebrated their festivals knowing the wicked would not invade them (Nahum 1:9-15). Trust God's sovereignty to bring the right people to proclaim good news and peace to break the yoke of sin.

Trust God's Power to Restore Health
The Lord would restore Israel's splendor even though the destroyers ruined their vines. Nineveh's troops stumbled and the palace collapsed. It was decreed that the city be exiled like a pool with water draining away. Her wealth was plundered and their hearts melted. God burnt their chariots in smoke and the sword devoured their young lions. The voices of their messengers were no longer heard (Nahum 2:1-13). Trust God's power to restore health and defeat spiritual enemies.

Trust God's Truth to Defeat Lust for Control
Nahum pronounced woe on the city of blood full of lies, plunder and victims because she had lust of a harlot and sorceries. Nineveh enslaved nations by prostitution and witchcraft. God was against her and showed nations her nakedness and shame. All who saw Nineveh said she was ruined and wondered if anyone could comfort her. She was no better than Thebes with Cush, Egypt, Put and Libya as allies and her strength. Thebes was also taken captive, exiled, infants killed and great men chained (Nahum 3:1-11). Trust God's truth to defeat lust for control.

Strengthen Your Spiritual Defenses to Defeat Materialism
Nineveh's fortresses were like fig trees when the first ripe fruit was shaken into the mouth of the eater. The gates of their land were wide open to their enemies with women as troops. They should have strengthened their defenses by repairing the brickwork since fire devoured them. They increased the number of merchants more than the stars who were like locusts that stripped the land. Their guards and officials were like swarms of locusts that flew away when the sun appeared (Nahum 3:12-17). Strengthen your spiritual defenses through prayer to defeat materialism.

Pray God's Attributes to Heal Your Wounds
Their shepherds slumbered, nobles lied down to rest and the people scattered on the mountains. Nothing could heal their wound since their injury was fatal. Everyone who heard news about them celebrated because they felt their endless cruelty (Nahum 3:18-19). Pray God's goodness, sovereignty, power and truth to heal your wounds.

The following explains how to pray in order to see your wounds healed:
1. Trust God's goodness who cares in times of trouble
2. Trust God's sovereignty to bring the right people who proclaim truth and peace
3. Trust God's power to restore health and defeat spiritual enemies
4. Trust God's truth to defeat lust for control
5. Strengthen your spiritual defenses through prayer to defeat materialism
6. Pray God's goodness, sovereignty, power and truth to heal your wounds

Return to God Through Hardships (Insights in Prophets)

Lack of love and disobedience prompt God's judgment. He reveals His plans to stop injustice and destroy materialism. These things lead people to seek God by telling the truth, practicing justice, deny complacency to grieve over sin and hate pride.

Understand God's Wrath When People Lack Love Toward Others
Amos, a shepherd of Tekoa, said the Lord roared from Zion drying up pastures. He sent wrath against the surrounding nations of Israel like Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon and Moab who sinned grossly. God destroyed kings, broke gates, consumed fortresses and exiled people and their kings because they took captive whole communities selling them to other nations while stifling compassion. Ammon ripped open Gilead's pregnant women to extend his borders  (Amos 1:1-2:3). Understand God's wrath when people lack love toward others.

Understand God's Judgment Over Disobedience, False Gods, Injustice and Stifling Prophesy
God sent wrath against Judah because they rejected without obeying His law, led astray by false gods their ancestors followed and consumed Jerusalem's fortresses. He sent wrath against Israel because they sold the righteous for silver and needy for a pair of sandals, trampled the poor, denied justice to the oppressed, profaned His holy name by father and son using the same girl and gained money unjustly. God brought them out of Egypt, led them 40 years in the desert, gave them the Amorites' land and raised  Nazarites as prophets from their young men. They made the Nazirites drink wine and commanded them not to prophesy. God crushed the swift, strong and warriors (Amos 2:4-16). Understand God's judgment when His people disobey His word, follow false gods, deny justice to the needy and stifling prophesy.

Understand that God Reveals Plans To Stop Injustice and Destroy Materialism
God punished Israel for their sins because they were the only ones He chose from all families of the earth. Two walk together only if they agreed to do so. People trembled when a trumpet sounded in the city. God caused disaster to come into a city. The Sovereign Lord did nothing without revealing His plan to His prophets. They  prophesied when God spoke. Proclaim to Ashdod's and Egypt's fortresses that they saw the great unrest and oppression among her people. They did not know how to do right. God said an enemy pulled down their strongholds and plundered their fortresses. He punished Israel for their sins, destroyed Bethel's altars and destroyed the winter and summer mansions adorned with ivory (Amos 3:1-15). Understand God reveals plans to stop injustice and destroy materialism.

Return to God Through Famine, Economic Hardships and Plagues
God told women who oppressed the poor and asked for drinks from their husbands that He would take them away with fishhooks. When Israelites boasted about their religious sacrifices, God gave them empty stomachs, yet still did not return to Him. He withheld rain when the harvest was three months away giving rain to nearby fields, yet still did not return to Him. God struck their vineyards with blight, mildew and locusts, yet still did not return to Him. He sent plagues and killed their young men, yet still did not return to Him. He overthrew some like Sodom and Gomorrah similar to a burning stick snatched from the fire, yet still did not return to Him. God said, "Prepare to meet your God, O Israel."  He formed the mountains, created the wind, revealed His thoughts to man, turned dawn to darkness and tread the earth's high places (Amos 4:1-13). Return to God when He speaks through famine, economic hardships and plagues.

Seek God By Telling the Truth and Practicing Justice
Only one of ten people marched in Israel's cities. In seeking God, they lived, but Gilgal would go into exile and Bethel reduced to nothing. They despised him who told the truth and forced the poor to give them grain. Their stone mansions remained empty and not drink wine from their lush vineyards. They oppressed the righteous, took bribes and deprived the poor of justice in the courts. The prudent man kept quiet in evil times. By seeking good and not evil, they lived and the Lord God Almighty was with them. If they hated evil, loved good and maintained justice in the courts, He showed mercy to the remnant. The day of the Lord would be darkness, not light. God despised their religious feasts and assemblies while not regarding their offerings. Let justice roll like a river and righteousness like a never-failing stream (Amos 5:1-27). Seek God by telling the truth and practicing justice like a ever-flowing river.

Deny Complacency, Consumerism and Comfort To Grieve Over Sin
God hated the complacent and secure among prominent people who owned ivory-inlaid beds, feasted on choice lambs and lounged on couches. They strummed harps, drank much wine and used the finest lotions. Because they did not grieve over the ruin of Joseph, they were among the first to go into exile (Amos 6:1-7). Deny complacency, consumerism and comfort to grieve over sin.

Hate Pride, Silence Speaking About God and Unrighteousness Causing Oppression and Death
Because God hated pride and fortresses, He delivered up the city. People died and told not to mention God's name. He smashed every house into pieces. They turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness. They rejoiced in futile conquests trusting in their own strength. God stirred a nation to oppressed Israel (Amos 6:8-14). Hate pride, silence speaking about God, injustice and unrighteousness causing oppression and death.

The following encourage people to return to God:
1. Lack of love toward others brings God's wrath
2. Disobedience, false gods, injustice and stifling prophesy bring God's judgment
3. Revelation of God's plans to stop injustice and destroy materialism
The following assist people to return to God:
1. Seek God by telling the truth and practicing justice
2. Deny complacency, consumerism and comfort to grieve over sin
3. Hate pride, silence speaking about God and unrighteousness causing oppression and death

Church Designed to Rebuild Cities (Insights in Prophets)

1/12/2013

Picture
The church is God's plan for building healthy cities. Instead of taking personal responsibility, God's people often rely on government and non-profit organizations to solve problems in the city whether it is housing, jobs, violence or social opportunities. Jeremiah encouraged an expanded role for the church in the city by speaking the whole truth of what God commands from Genesis to Revelation in order to seek its peace and prosperity. Only a healthy and obedient church motivated by God's love and repentance bring healing to a city effectively. The law written on the hearts of believers through the New Covenant empowers people to rebuild the city's ruins.

Speak Everything God Commands
God instructed Jeremiah to tell Judah everything He commanded so they would listen and turn from their evil way. If they did not listen to the prophets, He would make Jerusalem an object of cursing among all nations like Shiloh. Everyone including priests and prophets said Jeremiah must die after he prophesied desolation for Jerusalem.  He told the officials to reform their ways and actions by obeying God so He would not bring disaster upon them. By killing Jeremiah, they would bring innocent blood upon themselves. Some elders cited Hezekiah who feared and sought the Lord's favor by not killing Micah who warned Jerusalem like Jeremiah (Jer. 26:1-24). Speak everything God commands so the church obeys Him.

Speak Truth Without Lying
God told Jeremiah to put a yoke on his neck. He warned the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre and Sidon that their countries would either serve Babylon or be destroyed if they did not submit to his yoke. Their prophets communicated lies saying they should not serve Babylon, which would result in ruin instead of life. The prophet Hananiah's told Judah to break the yoke of Babylon since God would bring back the articles of the Lord's house and exiles within two years. Jeremiah said prophets who prophesied peace were recognized as sent by the Lord if his prediction came true. After Hananiah broke the yoke off of Jeremiah's neck, he said God would replace it with a iron yoke on all these nations to make them serve king Nebuchadnezzar of  Babylon. Jeremiah told Hananiah that God did not send him even though he persuaded Judah to trust in lies. He died that year because he preached rebellion against God (Jer. 27:1-28:17).  Speak truth without lying to obey God even when it is not politically correct.

Seek the Peace and Prosperity of the City
Jeremiah sent letter to exiles in Babylon exhorting them to build houses, plant gardens, marry and have children. They prayed and sought the peace of the city. Their prosperity was tied to the city's. After 70 years in Babylon, God fulfilled His promise to bring them back to Jerusalem. He planned to prosper and not harm them for hope and a future. They prayed so He would listen. They found Him and restored their fortunes when they sought Him with all their heart. The exiles and people in Jerusalem did not listen to God's words. Those who prophesied lies were put to death by Babylon (Jer. 29:1-32). Seek the peace and prosperity of the city where you live knowing God has a hopeful future.

Rebuild Your City As God Makes the Church Healthy
God told Jeremiah to write in a book every word He spoke concerning a time of trouble when He broke Jacob's yoke to serve the Lord. They should not fear since Jacob would have peace, security and salvation. God disciplined them with justice. Their wound was incurable with no one to plead or care for their cause. They had many sins and great guilt, but God restored them to health and healed their wounds being called an outcast. The city was rebuilt on her ruins and their community established before God with thanksgiving. A ruler arose from among them to be close to God. They were His people as He fully accomplished His purposes via His wrath  (Jer. 30:1-24).  Rebuild your city as God heals wounds and restores the church to health.

Allow God's Love and Repentance Bring Healing of the City
God gave Israel rest as they found favor in the desert. He loved Israel with an eternal love and drew them with lovingkindness. The watchman made their praises heard and asked God to save them. He gathered the blind, lame and expectant mothers from the ends of the earth. They came with weeping and prayer as God led them beside streams of water on a level path. He watched over His flock like a shepherd and redeemed them from those stronger than they. He satisfied the priests with abundance and filled His people with bounty. They went from weeping for children to having their work rewarded. God provided hope for their future as children returned to their land. Their repentance brought compassion from God (Jer. 31:1-20). Allow God's love and repentance of sin motivate the church in healing various parts of your city to bring hope, favor and abundance.

Rely On God's Law Written On Your Heart
When Israel returned to their towns, the Lord created a new thing when a woman surrounded a man. After God restored Judah from captivity, they said the Lord blessed the righteous dwelling as they lived together, refreshed the weary and satisfied the faint. He uprooted, tore down, overthrew, destroyed and brought disaster before building and planting. Everyone was responsible for their own sin. In the future, God made a new covenant with Israel and Judah different than the Mosaic covenant. He put His law in their minds and wrote it on their hearts as their God and His people. Everyone knew the Lord without teaching as God forgave without remembering their sin. Like the sun rising daily, He promised that Israel's descendants continue as a nation. God never rejected Israel's descendants again because of their works. Jerusalem would be rebuilt and holy to the Lord from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate never to be uprooted and demolished (Jer. 31:21-40).  Rely on God's law written on your heart and mind through the New Covenant.

How will your small group rebuild ruins in the city? Let God speak to you about a simple and realistic project that your group could accomplish trusting Him to empower you.

Implementing a Larger Vision of the Church (Insights in NT)

1/11/2013

Picture
Jesus used on-the-job training in equipping His disciples as they served in the world. This became a starting point for implementing a larger vision of the church studied earlier in Eph. 1-3. Eph. 4-6 instructs how to  implement the church's larger vision  by equipping believers for works of service and teaching the truth of Christ so believers are filled with the Holy Spirit to do God's will in their home, work and city realizing their spiritual battle against evil forces.

Equip Believers for Works of Service
Paul urged them to live a life worthy of their calling in humility, gentleness, patience, love and unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. God called them to one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who was over, through and in all. Christ gave grace gifts to fill the whole universe when He ascended on high and led captives in His train. He gave some as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers to equip God's people for works of service toward building up the church until all reached unity of faith,  knowledge and maturity in Christ. Reject crafty and deceitful teaching in order to speak the truth in love so everyone would grow up in all things through Christ, the Head. In Him, the whole body was joined and held together by every supporting ligament to build itself up in love as each part did its work (Eph. 4:1-16).  Equip believers for works of service toward Christ-centered maturity so everyone works together in love and unity.

Teach Truth of Christ
Futile thinking, darkened understanding and separation from the life of God due to ignorance because of hardness of heart led to sensuality, lust and impurity. Teaching the truth of Christ enabled people to put off the old self corrupted by deceitful desires. By renewing their minds, they put on the new self created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. They rejected falsehood and spoke truthfully as members of one body. They resolved anger daily to prevent the devil's foothold. Instead of stealing, they did manual work and shared with the needy. Rather than unwholesome talk, they spoke helpful things that met the listener's needs. They did not grieve the Holy Spirit who sealed them for the day of redemption. Instead of bitterness, rage, anger, slander and malice, they were kind, compassionate and forgiving just as Christ forgave them (Eph. 4:17-32). Teach the truth of Christ so believers renew their minds and practice truth, love and forgiveness.

Be Filled With Spirit
They imitated God through a loving lifestyle because of Christ's love and sacrifice for them. They rejected sexual immorality, impurity, greed, obscenity, foolish talk and coarse joking and embraced thanksgiving. Immoral, impure and greedy idolaters experienced God's wrath without inheritance in the kingdom of Christ. Living as children of light in goodness, righteousness and truth, they pleased the Lord and exposed the fruitless deeds of darkness. Christ shined on those who woke up spiritually from the dead. Through wisdom, they made the most of the opportunity, understood God's will and filled with the Spirit. The fruit was speaking to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs while making music in their hearts to God. They always gave thanks to God for everything in Christ's name and submitted to one another out of reverence for Him (Eph. 5:1-21).  Be filled with the Spirit to expose darkness, do God's will, give thanks and submit to one another.

Love and Lead Your Wife
Wives submitted to their husbands as to the Lord since husbands were head and Savior like Christ over the church. Wives submitted to their husbands in everything like the church submitted to Christ. Husbands loved their wives as Christ loved and gave Himself up for the church. He made her holy by washing her with water through the word. He presented her to Himself as a radiant, holy and blameless church without blemish. Likewise, husbands should love their wives as their own bodies by feeding and caring for it as Christ with the church. For this reason, a man left his father and mother and united with his wife so the two became one flesh. Husbands loved their wives as themselves and wives respected their husbands (Eph. 5:22-33). Love and lead your wife as she submits and respects her husband as a positive demonstration of Christ's relationship with the church.

Train Children and Serve Christ Wholeheartedly
Children obeyed and honored their parents in the Lord so it would go well in living longer. Fathers trained and instructed their children in the Lord instead of exasperating them. Slaves obeyed their earthly masters with respect, fear and sincerity of heart just as they obeyed Christ and doing God's will from their heart. They served the Lord wholeheartedly, not men, knowing God rewarded everyone for good they did. Masters treated their slaves similarly without threatening knowing their Master in heaven showed no favoritism (Eph. 6:1-9). Train children in the Lord and serve Christ wholeheartedly at work to earn His reward.

Put On God's Armor
They relied on God's mighty power by putting on His armor. They stood against the devil's schemes since their struggle was not against humans but against rulers, authorities, powers of this dark world and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. They stood firm with the belt of truth buckled around their waist and the breastplate of righteousness in place. They fitted their feet with readiness using the gospel of peace and took up the shield of faith to extinguish the evil one's flaming arrows. They took the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, God's word, to pray in the Spirit for all believers and their situations with all kinds of prayers and requests. Paul requested prayer for the right words in fearlessly making the gospel known as   an ambassador in chains. Tychicus told them his condition and activities to encourage them. He prayed that those who loved Christ  experience peace, love with faith and grace (Eph. 6:10-24). Put on God's armor using His word to pray in the Spirit so the gospel can go forth with boldness.

Pray through the following action points to see a larger vision of the church be implemented in your city:
1. Equip believers for works of service toward Christ-centered maturity so everyone works together in love and unity
2. Teach the truth of Christ so believers renew their minds and practice truth, love and forgiveness
3. Be filled with the Spirit to expose darkness, do God's will, give thanks and submit to one another
4.  Love and lead your wife as she submits and respects her husband as a positive demonstration of Christ's relationship with the church
5. Train children in the Lord and serve Christ wholeheartedly at work to earn His reward
6. Put on God's armor using His word to pray in the Spirit so the gospel can go forth with boldness

How to Become a Peacemaker (Insights in Law)

"Empower me to be a bold participant, rather than a timid saint in waiting; to exercise authority of honesty, rather than to defer to power or deceive to get it; to influence someone for justice, rather than impress anyone for gain; and by grace, to find treasures of joy, of friendship, of peace hidden in the fields you give me daily to plow" (Ted Loder).

In Deut. 19-22, you discover how men and women walk closely with God so they can be a peacemaker in settling disputes and controversies between people. They protect the innocent, discipline evildoers, discover truth through the testimony of two or three witnesses, penalize false witnesses, pursue simplicity in their relationship with Christ, communicate grace and truth, value others and choose sexual purity.

Matt. 5:9 says, "Blesses are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God." It is one of the Beatitudes in the Sermon On The Mount.

Protect Innocent
When the Lord destroyed nations, drove them out and settled in the land He gave, they set aside three cities centrally located. Anyone who killed a man unintentionally went there for protection from revenge so innocent blood would not be shed to prevent bloodguiltiness. If a man hated and killed his neighbor, the elders would hand him over to the avengers of blood to die. They purged the guilt of shedding innocent blood so it would go well with them (Deut. 19:1-13). Protect innocent parties and discipline evildoers to purge the guilt of shedding innocent blood.

Discover Truth
Do not move a neighbor’s boundary stone that ancestors set. A single witness was not enough to convict a man accused of any crime. The matter was established by two or three witnesses. They penalized a false witness by doing what the judge intended to do to his brother. This would purge evil so other people would hear and be afraid. They showed no pity but life for a life, eye for a eye, tooth for a tooth (Deut. 19:14-21). Discover truth through testimony of two or three witnesses and penalize false witnesses to deter future crimes.

Pursue Simplicity

God commanded Israel to not fear when they fought  enemies and saw horses, chariots and an army greater than them. The Lord was with them when He brought them out Egypt to fight against their enemies and give them victory. If a man built a new house, planted a vineyard without enjoying it, pledged to marry a woman, they should go home to prevent dying in battle. If any men was afraid or fainthearted, they were sent home so their brothers would not be disheartened. If people accepted terms of peace after being attacked, they subjected everyone to forced labor. If they refused to make peace, they killed the men and took the women, children and livestock as plunder. They destroyed idolatrous people to stop teaching in worshiping their gods causing sin. When they laid siege to a city for a long time, they saved the trees for food. Non-fruit trees were cut down to build siege works until it fell (Deut. 20:1-20).  Reject fear, avoid distractions, destroy idolatry and use assets when praying against evil forces that have greater resources.

Communicate Grace and Truth

When the killer was unknown, the elders in the nearest town broke an unworked heifer's neck and washed their hands over the animal saying they had not shed blood or saw it done. They forgave Israel whom God redeemed without holding His people guilty of the innocent man's blood to purge the guilt of shedding innocent blood. A woman from the spoils of victory could be taken as a wife after she mourned her father and mother for a month. If a husband was displeased with her, she could leave and not be  treated as a slave. An unloved wife's firstborn son received a double share. All the men of a city stoned a rebellious son to death to remove evil so Israel would hear and be afraid. Anyone who hung on a tree for capital offense was under God’s curse. His body was buried the same day to not desecrate the land God gave as an inheritance (Deut. 21:10-23). Communicate grace and truth to remove evil and guilt so God's people fear and obey Him.

Value Others
A brother’s animal was taken back to its owner if it strayed. Women and men did not wear the opposite gender’s clothes since it was an abomination to God. A mother was not taken from a bird’s nest but the young could be taken so it would go well for them in prolonging their days. They made a parapet for the roof of a house to stop the guilt of bloodshed if someone fell from it. They did not plant two kinds of seed in a vineyard since it would defile its fruit. They did not  plow with an ox and donkey yoked together and wear clothes of wool and linen woven together (Deut. 22:1-12). Value others by protecting their property, maintaining gender distinctions, initiating safety and promoting productivity.

Choose Sexual Purity

The elders fined a husband 100 shekels of silver and gave it to the wife’s father for falsely accusing his wife of not being a virgin. If the charge was true and the girl was not a virgin, then men of the city stoned her to death since she was promiscuous in order to purge evil from among them. If a man slept with a married woman, then both died to purge evil from Israel. If an engaged woman did not cry out when a man slept with her, then both were stoned to death to purge evil from among  them. A man died if he raped a girl pledged to be married. He paid the girl's father 50 shekels if he raped a virgin not pledged to be married (Deut. 22:13-30). Choose sexual purity in relationships and punish false charges that harm reputations to purge evil from your midst.

Ask God to develop the following characteristics in your life to equip you in becoming a peacemaker:
1. Protect innocent parties and discipline evildoers to purge the guilt of shedding innocent blood
2. Discover truth through testimony of two or three witnesses and penalize false witnesses to deter future crimes

3. Reject fear, avoid distractions, destroy idolatry and use assets when praying against evil forces that have greater resources
4. Communicate grace and truth to remove evil and guilt so God's people fear and obey Him
5. Value others by protecting their property, maintaining gender distinctions, initiating safety and promoting productivity
6. Choose sexual purity in relationships and punish false charges that harm reputations to purge evil from your midst

Loving Him More Than Other Things (Insights in NT)

Author John Piper wrote, “We weren’t meant to be somebody–we were meant to know Somebody.” Making a name for yourself should not be your goal. Peter and the other disciples' goal was to be successful fisherman. When they caught nothing, it seemed like failure. Christ taught them that success is a by-product of knowing and obeying Christ.

Jesus showed Himself to His disciples who joined Peter and caught nothing while going fishing. They did not know it was Jesus when He asked if they had any fish.  After telling the disciples to cast on the right side of the boat, they caught many fish. When John identified the person as Jesus, Peter put on his outer garment and threw himself into the sea. The other disciples dragged the net containing 153 large fish to the land. Jesus urged them to have breakfast and gave them bread and fish. This was the third time he showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead (John 21:1-14). Success is a by-product of knowing and obeying Christ.

Jesus asked Peter is He loved Him more than fish. Peter said he loved Him as a friend. Jesus said to "tend My lambs." Jesus asked Peter a second time if he loved Him unselfishly to the point of being willing to sacrifice. Peter said that he loved Him as a friend. Jesus to "shepherd My sheep." Jesus asked Peter  a third time if he loved Him as a friend. Peter was grieved that Jesus said the third time if he loved Him as a friend. Peter said, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love (friend) You." Jesus said to "tend My sheep." He said that Peter used to go wherever he wanted but when he got older, someone would crucify him. Jesus signified the kind of death by which he would glorify God. He told Peter to follow Him and not concern himself about John who would live until He came (John 21:15-23). Jesus tests you until you love Him more than earthly things.

John bore witness and wrote these things. We know his witness was true. Many other things Jesus did that if they were written in detail, the world could not contain all the books (John 21:24-25). Jesus bears witness to truth.

What do you love more than Christ? Repent of your sin and ask the Holy Spirit to deepen your love for Christ so He becomes the most important thing in your life. Jesus bears witness to reality and truth!

Making the World Stand Up and Take Notice (Insights in NT)

1/14/2012

One of the prime reasons why the world does not believe in Christ is the division they see in the church. Marketing the church won't work. When I served in college ministry, many students said the multitude of denominations confused them. It prevented them from seeing Christ. In John 17, Jesus prayed that believers would be unified so the world would believe in Him. In this way, the world will stand up and take notice.

Jesus asked the Father to glorify His Son so He could glorify Him and accomplish the work God gave Him to do. God's authority enabled Jesus to chose those to know Him for eternal life. Jesus revealed His name to ones He took out of the world who kept His word. God was glorified when they believed His words and that He sent Jesus. Jesus prayed the Father would guard and protect them in His name so they could be one like the Son and God (John 17:1-12). God glorified His Son so He could glorify believers to be one like them.

Jesus spoke these things in the world so they could have full joy through His word. The world hates believers because they are not of the world like Jesus. Staying in the world, they will be protected from Satan's power by being sanctified in truth through God's word. God sent both Jesus and believers into the world. He prayed that every believer and those believing in Him through their word would be sanctified in truth and become one. The Father, Son and believers are one so the world may believe that God sent Jesus (John 17:13-21). God sanctifies believers through His word so the world could believe in Him.

Jesus gave God's glory to them so they could be perfected in unity as the Father and Son are one. In this way, the world  could experience His love, behold His glory and be filled with God (John 17:22-26). God perfects unity in believers so the world could experience His love and glory.

We ought "with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing forbearance to one another in love, be diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" since their is one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism and one God and Father of all (Eph. 4:2-6).
