How are you inspired to preach the gospel of the kingdom? Rev. 6-8 explains the need to prepare for end time events knowing Satan's plan, recognize God's sovereignty in death and martyr of believers, expect cosmic disruption, embrace Christ as shepherd, let devastating events lead you to fervent prayer and recognize God's judgment in disrupting comfort.

Prepare for End Time Events Knowing Satan's Plan
When John watched the Lamb open the first of seven seals, he saw a white horse whose rider held a bow, given a crown and rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest. When the Lamb opened the second seal, a fiery red horse came out whose rider was given power and a large sword to take peace from the earth and make men kill others. When the Lamb opened the third seal, a black horse came out whose rider held a pair of scales in his hand. John heard a voice from four living creatures saying a quart of wheat and three quarts of barley for a day's wages without damaging the oil and wine (Rev. 6:1-6). Prepare for end time events knowing Satan inspires the antichrist to unleash devastating wars, famine and calamities on earth.

Recognize God's Sovereignty in Death and Martyr of Believers
When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, a pale horse had a rider named Death and Hades followed close behind. They were given power over 25 percent of the earth to kill by sword, famine, plague and wild beasts. After opening the fifth seal, John saw under the altar the souls of those slain because of the word of God and their testimony. They asked in a loud voice how long until the Sovereign Lord would judge and avenge their blood. Each was given a white robe and told to wait a little longer until their fellow servants and brothers were killed (Rev. 6:7-11). Recognize God's sovereignty in the death and martyr of believers during the great tribulation because of God's word and their testimony.

Expect Cosmic Disruption in Heaven and Earth
After opening the sixth seal, a great earthquake occurred, the sun turned black, moon turned blood red and the stars fell to the earth. The sky receded like a scroll and every mountain and island were removed from its place. Everyone, including the powerful elite, hid in caves and mountains. They called on them to fall and hide them from the one who sat on the throne and from the great wrath of the Lamb (Rev. 6:12-17). Expect cosmic disruption in heaven and on earth as sign of God's wrath.

Inspire Preaching of the Gospel of the Kingdom Before the End
An angel with God's seal told the four angels not to harm the land, sea or trees until they sealed 144,000 Israelites. A great multitude from every nation, tribe, people and language stood before the throne in front of the Lamb. They wore white robes and held palm branches crying out that salvation belonged to God who sat on the throne and to the Lamb (Rev. 7:1-10; Matt. 24:14). Inspire the preaching of the gospel of the kingdom in the whole world before the end comes.

Embrace Christ as Shepherd to Lead You to Springs of Living Water
The angels fell down before the throne and worshiped God saying praise, glory, wisdom, thanks, honor, power and strength to Him forever. Those in white robes came out of the great tribulation. They washed their robes, made them white in the blood of the Lamb and served Him day and night in His temple before God's throne. He who sat on the throne spread His tent so they never hungered, thirsted and experienced scorching heat. The Lamb at the center of the throne was their shepherd and led them to springs of living water. God wiped every tear from their eyes (Rev. 7:11-17). Embrace Christ as shepherd to lead you to springs of living water including wisdom, power and strength.

Let Devastating Events Lead You to Fervent Prayer
When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about 30 minutes. An angel with a golden censer offered much incense with prayers of all believers on the golden altar before the throne. The incense smoke and believers' prayers went up before God. The angel filled the censer with fire from the altar and hurled it on the earth (Rev. 8:1-5). Let devastating events lead you to fervent prayer in hastening Jesus' return.

Recognize God's Judgment in Disrupting Comfort
The first angel sounded his trumpet so hail and fire mixed with blood were hurled upon the earth. A third of the earth and trees were burned up, including the green grass. The second angel sounded his trumpet and something like a huge mountain was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died and a third of the ships were destroyed. The third angel sounded his trumpet and a great star fell from the sky so a third of the rivers and springs of water turned bitter with many people dying. The fourth angel sounded his trumpet and a third of the sun, moon, stars, day and night turned dark. An eagle said woe to the inhabitants of the earth because of the trumpet blasts by the other three angels (Rev. 8:6-13). Recognize God's judgment in disrupting the ordinary means of comfort and created order.

Inspire yourself and others to preach the gospel of the kingdom by preparing for end time events knowing Satan's plan and God's judgment to disrupt comfort, allow God's sovereignty in the death and martyr of believers to lead you to fervent prayer and let future cosmic disruption cause you to embrace Christ as shepherd.

Steps In Rescuing Prodigals (Insights in Prophets)

God is active in rescuing prodigals  beginning with His sovereignty that spurs Him to action.  God's holiness protects prodigals from wrath, His love destroys those who harm them, His righteousness leads to godly lifestyle, His truth purifies their lips to call on Him and His power rescues them so they can walk with God.

The proper response of those who desire to rescue prodigals from sin is to reject complacency and idolatry, seek God in humility and righteousness, receive His inheritance, avoid a carefree lifestyle, wait on Him in truth without fear, and take delight in mighty God who empowers prodigals to walk with Him.

God's Sovereignty Spurs Him to Action
God said to Zephaniah during Josiah's reign that He would sweep everything from the earth. He would stretch His hand against those in Judah and Jerusalem who worshiped Baal and Molech without seeking God. He would punish those who filled the temple of their gods with violence and deceit along with the complacent who thought God was inactive. He plundered their wealth and demolished their houses. They would build houses and not live in them and plant vineyards and not drink the wine (Zeph. 1:1-13). Know God hates complacency, idolatry, violence and deceit.

God's Holiness Protects You From Wrath
The day of the Lord brought wrath, distress, anguish, trouble, ruin and gloom. People would walk like blind men because of sin. Their money could not save them. God's jealousy consumed and ended the whole world. The humble  who did what He commanded sought the Lord. They should seek righteousness and humility to gain shelter during the day of the Lord's anger (Zeph. 1:14-2:3). Seek God in humility and righteousness for protection from His wrath.

God's Love Destroys Those Who Harm You
God would destroy the Philistines so the remnant of Judah would dwell in the houses of Ashkelon. He cared and restored their fortunes. Moab and Ammon insulted and made threats against God's people who would inherit their land. After He destroyed all the gods of the land, every nation would worship Him (Zeph. 2:4-12). Receive His inheritance after He destroys every god that insults and threatens you.

God's Righteousness Leads to Godly Lifestyle
God would destroy Assyria and leave Nineveh desolate. This was a carefree city that lived in safety. Nineveh said that there was none besides her. Nineveh became a ruin with everyone scoffing at her (Zeph. 2:13-15). Avoid a carefree lifestyle that leads to ruin and scoffing.

God's Truth Purifies Your Lips
Zephaniah said Jerusalem was rebellious, accepted no correction and did not draw near to the Lord. Her officials were roaring lions, priests did violence to the law and  prophets were angry. God was righteous, dispensed justice and never failed. He demolished strongholds and destroyed cities. People acted corrupted and did not accept correction from God. They waited on Him for purified lips to call on His name. He removed those who rejoiced in pride only leaving the humble who trusted in God's name. Israel's remnant spoke no lies or deceit and no one made them afraid (Zeph. 3:1-13). Wait on God in truth without fear so purified lips can call on His name.

God's Power Rescues Prodigals
God turned back the enemy so Jerusalem did not fear. He was mighty to save and took great delight in them. He quieted them with His love and rejoiced over them with singing. God dealt with all who oppressed them, rescued the lame, gathered the scattered and gave them praise and honor in every land. He brought them home and  restored their fortunes before their eyes (Zeph. 3:14-20). Take delight in mighty God who rescues prodigals so they walk with Him.

Ask God to empower you in the following ways by rescuing prodigals from sin:
1. Reject complacency and idolatry
2. Seek God in humility and righteousness
3. Receive His inheritance
4. Avoid a carefree lifestyle
5. Wait on Him in truth without fear so you can call on Him
6. Delight in mighty God who rescues prodigals so they walk with Him

Return to God Through Hardships (Insights in Prophets)

Lack of love and disobedience prompt God's judgment. He reveals His plans to stop injustice and destroy materialism. These things lead people to seek God by telling the truth, practicing justice, deny complacency to grieve over sin and hate pride.

Understand God's Wrath When People Lack Love Toward Others
Amos, a shepherd of Tekoa, said the Lord roared from Zion drying up pastures. He sent wrath against the surrounding nations of Israel like Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon and Moab who sinned grossly. God destroyed kings, broke gates, consumed fortresses and exiled people and their kings because they took captive whole communities selling them to other nations while stifling compassion. Ammon ripped open Gilead's pregnant women to extend his borders  (Amos 1:1-2:3). Understand God's wrath when people lack love toward others.

Understand God's Judgment Over Disobedience, False Gods, Injustice and Stifling Prophesy
God sent wrath against Judah because they rejected without obeying His law, led astray by false gods their ancestors followed and consumed Jerusalem's fortresses. He sent wrath against Israel because they sold the righteous for silver and needy for a pair of sandals, trampled the poor, denied justice to the oppressed, profaned His holy name by father and son using the same girl and gained money unjustly. God brought them out of Egypt, led them 40 years in the desert, gave them the Amorites' land and raised  Nazarites as prophets from their young men. They made the Nazirites drink wine and commanded them not to prophesy. God crushed the swift, strong and warriors (Amos 2:4-16). Understand God's judgment when His people disobey His word, follow false gods, deny justice to the needy and stifling prophesy.

Understand that God Reveals Plans To Stop Injustice and Destroy Materialism
God punished Israel for their sins because they were the only ones He chose from all families of the earth. Two walk together only if they agreed to do so. People trembled when a trumpet sounded in the city. God caused disaster to come into a city. The Sovereign Lord did nothing without revealing His plan to His prophets. They  prophesied when God spoke. Proclaim to Ashdod's and Egypt's fortresses that they saw the great unrest and oppression among her people. They did not know how to do right. God said an enemy pulled down their strongholds and plundered their fortresses. He punished Israel for their sins, destroyed Bethel's altars and destroyed the winter and summer mansions adorned with ivory (Amos 3:1-15). Understand God reveals plans to stop injustice and destroy materialism.

Return to God Through Famine, Economic Hardships and Plagues
God told women who oppressed the poor and asked for drinks from their husbands that He would take them away with fishhooks. When Israelites boasted about their religious sacrifices, God gave them empty stomachs, yet still did not return to Him. He withheld rain when the harvest was three months away giving rain to nearby fields, yet still did not return to Him. God struck their vineyards with blight, mildew and locusts, yet still did not return to Him. He sent plagues and killed their young men, yet still did not return to Him. He overthrew some like Sodom and Gomorrah similar to a burning stick snatched from the fire, yet still did not return to Him. God said, "Prepare to meet your God, O Israel."  He formed the mountains, created the wind, revealed His thoughts to man, turned dawn to darkness and tread the earth's high places (Amos 4:1-13). Return to God when He speaks through famine, economic hardships and plagues.

Seek God By Telling the Truth and Practicing Justice
Only one of ten people marched in Israel's cities. In seeking God, they lived, but Gilgal would go into exile and Bethel reduced to nothing. They despised him who told the truth and forced the poor to give them grain. Their stone mansions remained empty and not drink wine from their lush vineyards. They oppressed the righteous, took bribes and deprived the poor of justice in the courts. The prudent man kept quiet in evil times. By seeking good and not evil, they lived and the Lord God Almighty was with them. If they hated evil, loved good and maintained justice in the courts, He showed mercy to the remnant. The day of the Lord would be darkness, not light. God despised their religious feasts and assemblies while not regarding their offerings. Let justice roll like a river and righteousness like a never-failing stream (Amos 5:1-27). Seek God by telling the truth and practicing justice like a ever-flowing river.

Deny Complacency, Consumerism and Comfort To Grieve Over Sin
God hated the complacent and secure among prominent people who owned ivory-inlaid beds, feasted on choice lambs and lounged on couches. They strummed harps, drank much wine and used the finest lotions. Because they did not grieve over the ruin of Joseph, they were among the first to go into exile (Amos 6:1-7). Deny complacency, consumerism and comfort to grieve over sin.

Hate Pride, Silence Speaking About God and Unrighteousness Causing Oppression and Death
Because God hated pride and fortresses, He delivered up the city. People died and told not to mention God's name. He smashed every house into pieces. They turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness. They rejoiced in futile conquests trusting in their own strength. God stirred a nation to oppressed Israel (Amos 6:8-14). Hate pride, silence speaking about God, injustice and unrighteousness causing oppression and death.

The following encourage people to return to God:
1. Lack of love toward others brings God's wrath
2. Disobedience, false gods, injustice and stifling prophesy bring God's judgment
3. Revelation of God's plans to stop injustice and destroy materialism
The following assist people to return to God:
1. Seek God by telling the truth and practicing justice
2. Deny complacency, consumerism and comfort to grieve over sin
3. Hate pride, silence speaking about God and unrighteousness causing oppression and death

Ministry Actions to Change Culture (Insights in Prophets)

Brian Walsh and J. Richard Middleton in their book, The Transforming Vision: Shaping a Christian World View,  wrote that “we must abandon our idols, recognize the multi-dimensionality of life, respond in obedience to God's norms for his creatures and begin to live in community with one another in a renewed way."

When you do justice, defend the needy, equip shepherds, communicate God's word, plant His word in receptive disciples, stop following false gods and warn people of God's judgment, you turn from evil ways to stop God's judgment and wrath along with ruin in cultural spheres. In contrast, you prove personal knowledge of God by living securely and bearing spiritual fruit (Jer. 21-25).

Do Justice By Rescuing the Oppressed
King Zedekiah asked Jeremiah to inquire of the Lord because Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon attacked Judah. God said He would fight against Judah by killing men and animals with a great plague and take Zedekiah captive. People who stayed in Jerusalem would die by the sword, famine or plague but those who surrendered to the Babylonians would live. God determined to harm Jerusalem by having Babylon destroy it with fire because of their evil. The Lord said to administer justice and rescue the robbed victim from his oppressor to stop His wrath (Jer. 21:1-14). Do justice by rescuing the oppressed to stop God's wrath.

Defend the Poor and Needy
God told Judah's king to not wrong or do violence to the alien, fatherless or widow nor shed innocent blood. Otherwise, God would make them like a desert and destroy the palace. Many nations asked why the Lord did such a thing to Jerusalem. The answer was they forsook God's covenant by worshiping and serving other gods. Woe to him who built his extravagant palace by unrighteousness and injustice without paying the workers. Everything went well for Josiah because he did what was right.  Those who knew God experienced well-being because they defended the cause of the poor and needy. In contrast, focusing on dishonest gain, shedding innocent blood, oppression and extortion caused an untimely death for Josiah's son, Jehoiakim. Security and disobedience triggered exile for their shepherds and allies, disgrace, no prosperity and no offspring ruling on the throne of David (Jer. 22:1-30). Defend the cause of the poor and needy to prove you know God.

Equip Shepherds to Care and Teach God's Word
Woe to shepherds who destroyed and scattered the sheep of God's pasture by not caring for them. God gathered the remnant out of all countries so they could be fruitful and multiply. He placed shepherds to tend them so none would fear or be missing. In the future, God raised up a righteous Branch and King called the Lord Our Righteousness from David's line to do the right thing in the land, which saved Judah and caused Israel to live in safety. Unfortunately, adultery caused parched land and withered pastures. Godless prophets and priests followed an evil course and used their power unjustly. The Samaria's prophet prophesied by Baal and led God's people astray. Jerusalem's prophets committed adultery, lived a lie and strengthened evildoers like Sodom and Gomorrah so no one turned from his wickedness (Jer. 23:1-14). Equip shepherds to care and teach God's word so His people live securely.

Communicate Power of God's Word
Jerusalem's prophets spread ungodliness in the land by offering false hope. They spoke visions from their own minds, taught peace to those who despised God and said no harm would come to those with stubborn hearts. Not one of them stood in the council of the Lord to see or hear His word. God never sent or spoke to these prophets. Those standing in His council proclaimed His word to turn His people from their evil ways. God filled heaven and earth so no one could hide from Him. The one with His word should speak it faithfully. His word was like fire and hammer to break a rock in pieces. God was against prophets who stole words from one another that were supposedly from Him. They led His people astray with reckless lies. They received no benefit from these words. Do not mention 'the oracle of the Lord' again because every man's own word became his oracle that distorted the words of the living and Almighty God. Therefore, He cast Jerusalem out of His presence bringing eternal disgrace and unforgettable shame (Jer. 23:15-40). Communicate the fire and hammer of God's word to turn people from their evil ways.

Plant His Word in Receptive Disciples
After Judah's leaders were carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, Jeremiah placed one basket of early-ripened figs that and a basket of spoiled figs in front of the temple. The good figs represented the exiles sent to Babylon. God brought them back to Judah to build up and not tear down, to plant and not uproot. He gave them a heart to know Him as His people. The poor figs represented Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials and survivors from Jerusalem who remained in the land or lived in Egypt, They were an an offense, reproach and object of ridicule to every earthly kingdom. God sent sword, famine and plague to destroy them from the land (Jer. 24:1-10). Plant His word in those pursuing a heart relationship to God so they can bear spiritual fruit.

Stop Following False Gods
Jeremiah spoke God's word to Judah for 23 years but they did not pay attention. The Lord sent His prophets repeatedly but they followed other gods and provoked God in what they made. Judah and the surrounding nations became a desolate wasteland and served the king of Babylon. After 70 years, God punished Babylon for their guilt to make it desolate forever as written and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations. Babylon was enslaved by many nations and great kings. God repaid them according to their deeds and the work of their hands (Jer. 25:1-14). Stop following false gods that cause ruin in various cultural spheres.

Warn People of God's Judgment
God told Jeremiah to make all nations drink the cup filled with the wine of God's wrath. After drinking it, Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials became ruined and an object of horror and scorn as they were today. Every kingdom on earth, including Babylon, drank the cup of God's wrath. The Lord Almighty called down a sword upon every person on earth and even brought disaster upon Jerusalem that bore His Name. God told Jeremiah to say these words: The Lord shouted against all who lived on the earth. He brought charges against the nations, judged all mankind and put the wicked to the sword. The disaster of those slain by the Lord spread from nation to nation. He called shepherds as leaders of the flock to weep and wail since they would be shattered like fine pottery with no place to escape. The Lord destroyed their pasture and laid waste their peaceful meadows because of the oppressor's sword and the Lord's fierce anger (Jer. 25:15-38). Warn people of God's judgment beginning with the church and spreading to all nations.

Confess your sin, help someone in need, study and communicate God's word to a friend.

God's Operation of Grace in Salvation and Evangelism (Insights in NT)

8/30/2012

Picture
"If the church would only awaken to her responsibility of intercession, we could well evangelize the world in a short time. It is not God's plan that the world be merely evangelized ultimately. It should be evangelized in every generation. There should be a constant gospel witness in every corner of the world so that no sinner need close his eyes in death without hearing the gospel, the good news of salvation through Christ" (T. S. Hegre).

Apostle Paul had this kind of heart for Israel and explained God's operation of grace in salvation and evangelism.

God Chooses His Children Based on Grace, Not Works
Paul had great sorrow in his heart for Israel who were cut off from Christ  even though they received divine glory, covenants, law, temple worship, the promises and patriarchs that traced Christ's lineage. Natural children were not descended from Israel or regarded as Abraham's children, but children of the promise became God's children. The word of promise states a specific time for Sarah to have a son and Rebekah conceiving twins through Isaac. Before the twins had done anything good or bad so God's purpose and choice might stand, not because of works but because of His calling, Scripture said, "The older will serve the younger." It was written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated" (Rom. 9:1-13). God chooses who becomes His children based on grace according to His purpose, not based upon works.

God Shows Mercy to Display His Power and Proclaim His Name in the World
God is not unjust and said to Moses that He would have mercy and compassion on whom He desired, not dependent on man's desire or effort. Moses as revealed in Scripture said to Pharaoh that God raised him up to display His power so His name would be proclaimed in all the earth. God shows mercy and hardens whom He desires (Rom. 9:14-18). God shows mercy and hardens whom He desires to display His power and proclaim His name in the world.

God Prepares Objects of Mercy As Sons to Experience His Rich Glory
Why does God still cast blame since no one can resist His will? The reason is that no one can talk back to God. He made us like a potter with one vessel for noble purposes and others for common use. God demonstrated His wrath and made His power known by enduring patiently with objects of wrath prepared for destruction. Then the riches of His glory could be made known to objects of His mercy prepared in advance for glory like us whom He called from among the Jews and Gentiles. In Hosea He called those "who were not My people, My people, and her who was not beloved, 'beloved."' Those not His people would be called the sons of the living God. Isaiah said only the remnant would be saved among the vast number of Israelites. The Lord would execute His word thoroughly and quickly upon the earth so we would not be like Sodom and Gomorrah (Rom. 9:19-29). God prepares objects of mercy as sons to experience rich glory and objects of wrath to experience destruction.

People Attain Righteousness without Shame by Believing in Christ
Gentiles attained righteousness through faith even though they did not pursue it. Israel pursued a law of righteousness by works but did not attain it. They stumbled over Christ, the stumbling stone, which causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. He who believes in Him will be unashamed (Rom. 9:30-33). People attain righteousness without shame by believing in Christ.

People Experience Lordship of Christ and Freedom from Law by Calling upon the Lord
Paul prayed earnestly for Israel's salvation realizing their zeal for God without knowledge. They tried to establish their own righteousness without submitting to God's righteousness. Christ ends the law so everyone who believes may have righteousness. He who practices righteousness by the law lives by that righteousness. Obtaining righteousness by faith means the word is in your mouth and heart, namely the word of faith we proclaimed. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. You are justified by believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth so you can be saved. Anyone who believes in Him will be unashamed. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. To call upon the Lord, you must first believe. To believe, you must hear. To hear, you must have someone preaching the word to you. Someone must send the preacher as Isaiah says, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" (Rom. 10:1-15). People experience the Lordship of Christ and freedom from the law by believing and calling upon the name of the Lord.

God Sends His Word to the Whole World so People Hear and Believe Christ
Not all the Israelites believed the good news. Faith comes from hearing the message of God's word. The word went out to the whole world so no one could say they had not heard. Moses said Israel would be made jealous by a nation without understanding. Isaiah said those who did not seek Christ found Him and God revealed Himself to those who did not ask for Him. He told Israel that He was available to a disobedient and obstinate people (Rom. 10:16-21). God sends His word to the whole world so people can hear and believe in Christ.

Review the following truths on God's operation of grace in salvation and evangelism from Rom. 9-10:

1.   God chooses you to be His child, not based upon works

2.   God shows mercy to display His power and proclamation

3.   God prepares objects of mercy as sons to experience the riches of His glory

4. People attain righteousness without shame by believing in Christ

5.   People experience the Lordship of Christ and freedom from the law by believing and calling upon the name of the Lord

6. God sends His word to the whole world so people can hear and believe in Christ

How do these truths encourage you? What difference do they make in understanding grace versus works? How do they affect your attitude about evangelism?
